Abstract: The Effect of Bee Venom Acupuncture on Patient with Herniation of Nucleus Pulposus of Lumbar SpineBackground and Purpose :Although Bee Venom Acupuncture(BVA) has been used for painful inflammatory musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis andrheumatoid arthritis of knee joint, but there are poor reports about uses for herniation of intervertebral disc(HIVD). In this study, we tried to examine the therapeutic effectiveness on HIVD.Subjects : 45 outpatients and inpatients with HIVD visiting Kyung-Hee medical center Dept. of oriental rehabilitation medicine and East-West Spine Center were divided into two groups : 24 samples and 21 controls. Methods : Control group took usual acupuncture therapies for 4 weeks, while sample group took the same treatments and BVA therapies in addition. We applied BVA in the forms of subcutaneous bee venom injection referring to immunotheraphy for bee venom allergies. Outcome Mesures : Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) for pain(total 7 times), Oswestry Disability Index(ODI) for disability and range of movement were checked for assessments. Results : BVA group was significantly more effective in decreasing VAS scores after the 2nd treatment than the control group(p<0.01). Noncontained type HIVD patient with BVA theraphy show significantly better results than those without BVA theraphy after 4th treatment(p<0.01). The duration of pain was not significant statistically. ROM and ODI was significantly improved(p<0.05).Conclusions : In this clinical study, BVA was more effective in improving pain, disability of daily life and limited range of movement caused by HIVD than simple acupuncture therapy.
