For high speed data transmission on the telephone line, it is necessary to have a rapid convergence of equalizer parameters to the appropriate steady state values.
In order to improve the convergence speed of an ADFE for 8-level data, the influence of step size variation in training mode was investigated by computer simulation. About 20% improvement of convergence speed was accomplished by step-wise reduction of the step size parameter in training mode and efficient fixed step size in decision directed mode.
