This article focuses on the changes in major funerary rituals during the Bronze Age in the Liaodong region. It examines the characteristics of regional cultural types and the interactions and implications among local communities that practiced them. In particular, the study delves into the formal characteristics of Bronze Age funerary rituals in the Liaodong Peninsula. It also explores the causes of certain differences in their distribution areas, addressing the issue of locality in particular, in conjunction with the cultural background of each funerary ritual.
Communal cemeteries, a combination of different types of cemeteries within a single site, emerged as part of a belief system associated with funerary rituals and ritual activities utilizing megalithic covers (dolmens). This study briefly reviews the historical background of these practices, emphasizing the strengthening of group cohesion through common ancestors. The core of the rituals in such cemeteries likely centered on table-type dolmens, considering their external specificity and the landscape effect on the surrounding area.
This phenomenon may be a consequence of the presence of localized giant dolmens in the Biliu River Basin of the Liaodong Peninsula and the extension of their ritual and ceremonial functions to the northern Liaodong region. These motivators led to the cohesion of indigenous groups sharing a substrate culture amidst the expansion of the Shiertaiyingzi Culture of the Liaoxi region. This cohesion fostered a group identity that emphasized regional and kinship bases by sharing or emphasizing funerary rituals based on a megalithic cover of dolmens.
In conclusion, this study can be linked to the process of formation of indigenous groups in the Yoha basin, historically represented as Ye (穢), Maek (貊), or Yemaek (濊貊). It also relates to the establishment process of Gojoseon or Buyeo as the earliest states in Korean history.
