This study aims to formulate design principles and guidelines for elementary school teachers involved in crafting and implementing math lessons through artificial intelligence (AI) tutoring systems. Given the hierarchical and systematic nature of mathematics, the subject lends itself well to adaptive learning tailored to individual students. With recent advancements in AI technology, the capability to assess current learner levels and predict future learning has emerged as a novel approach to adaptive learning. However, the effectiveness of teaching and learning is not guaranteed by sophisticated technology alone; hence, specific design directions and guidelines are imperative for educators utilizing AI in mathematics lessons. Employing the design and development research method, this study identified lesson components, design principles, and detailed guidelines. The outcome included 15 design principles and 52 guidelines grounded in seven components. A usability evaluation, targeting lesson planners, highlighted two strengths, namely, “flexible lesson design based on learner data” and “a comprehensive and systematic approach to designing individual and unit lessons using AI technology.” Suggestions for improvement include “simplifying lesson design preparation and enhancing the designer’s personal understanding of AI technology.”
