The purpose of this study is to examine the diction of Korean modern poetry. Lee Kwang-su(李光洙), Kim, Uk(金億), Ju, Yo-han(朱耀翰), Kim, So-wul(金素月) were selected as models and their literature was also divided into the starting, the groping, and the muturing phase. The diction of each phase were examined from three angles.
Lee, Kwang-su, in the starting phase, wrote his works in a literary style by that time and didn't have the modern conception of language. Kin Uk and Ju, Yo-han, in the groping phase, had the modernc onception of language and got the use of common language and the purely Korean language expanded, but their attempt was flat. Ideology and statement also remained still in their works. Kim, So-wul, in the muturing phase, overcame these phases and wrote his poem in a colloquail, common language and used newlycoined words. It was not until his works that real modernization of the Korea language in poetry was achieved and category of language was largely expanded.
