Computer -Mediated Communication (CMC) among interactive technologies has provided promises of remote interactions, time/ space independence, effective and efficient information retrieval, and so on. CMC is a system which connect computer s each other into computer networks, a personal computer with a modem via a telephone system to another computer, or a terminal hard- wired into a network, or a connection into a mainframe computer directly. The advantages of using CMC for instruct ion include opportunities for two- way interactive communication with time and space independence, rapid exchange of information, collaborative learning and social and psychological network format ion. Because of these advantages, CMC is thought as a very useful tool in the context for higher distanced education. Some of the distance teaching institutes over the world have tried to incorporate computer - mediated communication system with their existing instructional mechanism based on positive educational, economical and social effect s of CMC proved by related studies (Christensen, 1990 ; Mason, 1990 ; Kaye, 1990 ; Bang & Moller, 1990 ; Soby, 1990). Most of the institutes find that the CMC system is very effective in promoting interact ion between student s and tutor s or among student s themselves. Non- real time interact ion of CMC suit s very well with the distance mode of the institutes. Active information and idea exchange and collaborative learning have occur red during the period of CMC usages in the distance education set tings. This report analyses several cases of using CMC for their distance teaching system with regard to characteristics of each CMC system, usage pat terns, limitations and possibilities of CMC in distance education for adult s. Cases of Denmark Jutland Open Univerisity, University of Air in Japan, Norway``s NKS college, Open University of UK, and Korea Air and Correspondence University were included in the analysis. Based on the analysis of the selected ca ses, several important suggest ions for more advanced development and use of CMC in distance education were provided.
