Almost all of 56 races in China tend to emphasize ornaments. As for women from Jang(藏) nationality, Mongol(蒙古) nationality, Myo(苗) nationality, and Yi(彝) nationality and others, the ornaments of being put on the head or the body are having higher value rather than costume. Especially, the women's headdress of Yi nationality is an important part that is indispensible out of costume. The headdress of Yi nationality is a symbol of proceeding with continuing civilization of Yi nationality as well as a mark of distinguishing race and internal branch. Therefore, a study on the women's headdress of Yi nationality is not a simple research on costume, but is a deep research on the direction of history and culture as a whole.
Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to examine the distribution region, geographical environment, and worship, and culture of Yi nationality, and to figure out characteristics of headdress such as color, material, form, and symbol as for the women's headdress of Yi nationality.
In terms of Yi nationality, the worship for the heavenly gods is an important cause for forming culture of headdress. In culture of Yi nationality, the head is recognized as the most important part. What a person's head is directly toward the heavens is thought to be non-respect. Thus, covering the head is to express a respect for the heavenly gods.
Yi nationality is broad in geographical distribution range and is being distributed mainly in some of China's Sichuan Sheng(四川省), Yunnan Sheng(云南省), Guizhou Sheng(貴州省), and Gwangsijangjok autonomous district(廣西壯族自治區). To research into the costume of Yi nationality more in detail, the scholars classified the region-based costume of Yi nationality into 6 types of Daesoryangsanhyeong(大小凉山型), Jeondongnamhyeong(滇东南型), Jeonseohyeong(滇西型), Jeon- dongbukhyeong(滇东北型), Jeonjunghyeong(滇中型) and Geomseobuk- hyeong(黔西北型). Even this study researched into the women's headdress focusing on 6 types such as Yi nationality in Ryangsan out of Daesoryangsanhyeong(大小凉山型), Yi nationality in Hongha(紅河) out of Jeondongnamhyeong(滇东南型), Yi nationality in Oesan(巍山) out of Jeonseohyeong(滇西型), Yi nationality in Sotong(昭通) and Gokjeong(曲靖) regions out of Jeondongbukhyeong(滇东北型), Yi nationality in regions of Choung(楚雄), Gonmyeong(昆明), and Okgye(玉溪) out of Jeonjunghyeong(滇中型), and Yi nationality in Piljeol(筆節) and Ryukbansu(六盤水) out of Geomseobukhyeong(黔西北型).
A basic type of the women's headdress of Yi nationality includes Dupa(頭帕), hempen hood(頭巾), and hat. As Dupa(頭帕) is what is worn in Daesoryangsanhyeong(大小凉山型), it is worn by unmarried women in Daesoryangsan region and isn't shown in other regions. Also, seeing the women's headdress of Yi nationality, the marital status, the child appearance, and age group can be divided.
A material of headdress is mainly used cotton fabrics and is more used wool and rug in region with a distinct change in tem- perature. Color of headdress can be divided into a cold color system and a warm color system. Headdress color in Daesoryangsan- hyeong(大小凉山型), some part of Jeonseohyeong(滇西型), Jeondong- bukhyeong(滇东北型), and Geomseobukhyeong(黔西北型) is primarily used black and blue in a cold color system. Other than it, red, pink and yellow in a warm color system are mainly used. Personal ornaments are decorated mainly on Dupa, hempen hood, and hat and are used diverse materials such as a bead made of silver, pearl, coral bead, flower made of woolen yarn, and artificial flower.
Myth or legend on the origin of headdress have great influence upon color and shape. Also, people every region have different object of worship. Thus, diverse forms of headdress were being shown. Yi nationality makes and wears headdress by imitating an article available for protecting a person, which was shown in a mythological story. Also, it could be known to make and wear special pattern in order to be in memory of people who had devoted their life for keeping love out of legend.
As this study is the one that examined characteristics of the women's headdress of Yi nationality focusing on 6 types of Daesoryangsanhyeong(大小凉山型), Jeondongnamhyeong(滇东南型), Jeon- seohyeong(滇西型), Jeondongbukhyeong(滇东北型), Jeonjunghyeong(滇中型) and Geomseobukhyeong(黔西北型) in southwestern China, it cannot be said to be the whole women's headdress of Yi nationality. Also, even Yi nationality is being changed the living culture by receiving influence of modern civilization. According to it, the headdress or costume culture is changing. Thus, a multi-dimensional research of headdress is needed henceforth. This study is desired to be basic data of letting the culture of headdress in Yi nationality informed and of inquiring into costume culture of Yi nationality. Also, it is expected to be likely conducive to a research on costume of a minority race in China in addition to a research on costume of Yi nationality, which is progressed even in China as well as South Korea hereafter.
