Goryeo Sogga is lyric of folk music that was created in Goryeo dynasty and inherited to Joseon dynasty, when the music was used as royal movement. Main context in Goryeo Sogga is the pain of love and separation due to agony of ordinary lives experienced by the people in Goryeo era but the literary expression is refined by the intellectual class in Joseon era. Therefore, Goryeo Sogga is handed down as the best among any other literary works in the history.
The aim of this thesis is to discuss about the propensity of consciousness of writers and readers of the Goryeo Sogga, based on the results of characterizing some selected works in view of time and space consciousness of the teller in each work. A set of Goryeo Sogga that contains sentiment of parting is selected for the purpose of this study, which consists of six parting poems such as <Gasiri>, <Seogyeong Byeolgog>, <Manjeonchun Byeolsa>, <Dongdong>, <Isanggog>, and <Jeongseogga>.
In the selected parting poems, space consciousness is expressed as either a closed space which denies severance, or an open space which points towards transcendental state. The space recognized by tellers in the parting poems is closed because the parting is not determined by the teller's mind but caused by the lover's change of mind or social / historical reason. With these causes, the teller is not able to change the status of parting whatsoever he / she tries to prevent severance. An open space that transcend reality is desired in the case that the teller has to accept parting which is caused by agony of real life.
Time consciousness shows either the denial of parting at present time or desire to psychologic time that points towards eternal future. Same as in the case of space consciousness, this is because the parting is caused by the tragic social and historical reality of the period.
Therefore, the characteristics of Goryeo Sogga viewed from time and space consciousness of parting poems could be summarized as passive acceptance of tragic reality and the overcome of reality by hoping to reach transcendental world. From this characterization, the meaning of time and space consciousness of Goryeo Sogga can be summarized as follows.
First, the time and space consciousness of parting poems shows a secular view to the world which tries to disentangle conflicts arising in ordinary human lives. Such view is contrary to the view to the world after death shown in Hyangga although fundamental ideology of both Goryeo and Silla dynasty is the same Buddhism. In the case of Gyeonggichega that is a genre of literary works written by contemporary but higher class writers, the teller's desire is to get better material amenities which is different from parting poems.
Second, conflicts of parting is caused not by the teller but by the lovers of the teller, and the teller has no chance but to passively accept the state. This is due to the political environment of the Goryeo dynasty where unwanted separation is enforced so often. The same passiveness to unwanted separation can be found in Gisaeng Sijo in Joseon dynasty, but different from the case of parting poems, the reason is due to the writers' social class.
Third, time and space consciousness of parting poems is correlated with the desire of the writers and also with the omnipresent hopes of contemporary people who enjoyed and transferred the poems. Contrary to the case of Hyangga, the teller and lover in Goryeo Sogga are not specifically exposed in the works because the desires expressed in the works are publically owned by the people of the era.
As a conclusion, this thesis confirms the proposition that every literary work should have relationship with the social and historical background of the time when it is created and read, from the study of time and space consciousness of six parting poems of Goryeo Sogga.
