Since Moniz began his clinical investigation, almost a century has passed.
Cycles of acceptance and rejection of this theory have been its hallmark-more so than for any other method of treatment.
The introduction of psychotropic medications reduced the need for psychiatric surgery but did not eliminate it. In the 1970s there was great agitation over the possibility that psychosurgery would be used. It is essential, however, to be ever mindful that these neurosurgical attempts to benefit the psychiatrically disabled do have the potential to alter human behavior in the general population.
This review aimed at giving a compact and systemized account of the clinical guidelines in the management of patients with psychiatric disorder.
