Microbial cellulose has many potential applications due to its excellent physical properties. The production of cellulose from A. xylinum in submerged culture is, however, beset with numerous problems. The most difficult one has been the appearance of spontaneous mutants deficient of cellulose producing ability under shaking culture conditions. Due to the genetic instability of Acetobacter xylinum under shaking culture conditions, developing a stable mutant has become a major research interest in recent years. In this research, different configurations of production systems were designed, prepared, and tested to find a proper type of bioreactor for the production of microbial cellulose under shaking culture conditions. Among tested, a reactor system with planar type impellar and bottom sparging system was found to produce microbial cellulose without generating cellulose minus mutants.
