불경간접번역과 교육적 함의: ‘금강경’번역을 중심으로 = Sutra indirect translation and its educational implication: with focus on Diamond Sutra

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to examine the indirect translation of Chinese Buddhist Sutra into Korean translation, and to find out its linguistic influence on Korean language. Chinese Buddhist Sutra has a special position in the translation in that it exemplifies successful cultural integration of new and the existing culture, and that Chinese translation of Buddhist Sutra has been a default text for Buddhist sutra studies until recently. The conservative Korean Buddhism authorized the Chinese translation of Buddhist Sutra as a norm for the formalized rituals and chanting for more than 1,000 years. This study assumed that the longer exposure of Chinese translation of Buddhist Sutra affects the formation of the Korean Buddhism as well as Korean language, and researched the comparative study of Buddhist translations (Sanskrit original, English, Chinese, Korean indirect, and Korean direct translation). The result shows that the indirect Korean translation of Buddhist Sutra has been strongly affected by the Chinese translation not only in the vocabulary but also the sentence formation and the world view. Indirect Sutra translation in Korea is inevitable historical outputs caused by the physical, cultural and linguistic distances. Thus, it is necessary to recognize its realistic value in the translation education and to find a way to induce direct translation.
