Antimicrobial activities of acetone and methanol extract of 26 esculent plants were investigated for the screening of natural antimicrobial components. By agar diffusion method, the extracts were tested on their microbial inhibition against 5 microorganisms. Acetone extract(Platycodon grandiflorum, Allium fistulosum, Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, Allium monanthum) and methanol extract(Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense, Mallotus japonicus, Saururus chinensis) showed strong inhibitory effects against tested microorganisms. Acetone and methanol extract showed potent inhibitory effects on the growth of Staph. aureus and B. subtilis, respectively. Acetone and methanol extract showed a similar trend of antibacterial activity against E. coli and Pseu. aeruginosa. Ethylacetate fraction of Cedrela sinensis and Artemisia princeps var. orientalis also showed a microbial inhibition against most of the bacteria.
