자살 보도가 잠재적 자살자에게 미치는 영향 = The Impact of Media Coverage of Suicide on Suicidal People in Korea

This study aimed to determine whether the media coverage of attempted or completed suicides is associated with an increase in professional suicide counselling for suicidal people at the highest risk of attempting suicide. Data were available on 2,548 suicide-related items appearing in Korean newspapers and on television news between July 2006 and December 2008. The media includes three major Korean newspapers-Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo and Donga Ilbo-and eight other national dailies and three major television networks-KBS, MBC and SBS. These data were combined with 3,412 suicide prevention counselling by Korean Association for Suicide Prevention(KASP) during the same period. To analyze the causal relationship between media reports of suicide and suicide counseling, the Granger causality tests were performed by using the monthly number of suicide-related news stories in the media and the number of counseling for suicidal people as variables. The results revealed that the number of suicide-related news by three major newspapers and eight other dailies is a Granger-cause of the number of suicide counseling, but the number of suicide reports by three major television news is not considered as a Granger-cause of the number of suicide counseling. This menas that a rise in suicide reports by newspapers is followed by an increase in requests for suicide counselling. The content analysis of 3,412 professional suicide counselling also indicates that suicide stories in news media does have an impact on suicidal people and the key factors affecting them are methods, causes and places of suicides reported by the media. Further research on this topic is required, but there is a need to remain vigilant about how the incidence of suicide is reported by the news media in order to prevent copycat effect.
