본국으로 귀환한 아프리카 이주 노동자의 사회·문화적 적응과 정체성에 관한 연구: 가나와 나이지리아 노동자를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 아프리카 이주노동자들의 국내 체류경험과 본국으로 귀환한 후 이들의 적응과정을 분석함으로써 이주노동자의 삶과 정체성을 이해하는 새로운 시각을 제공한다. 아프리카 이주노동자는 국내의 다른 아시아권 이주노동자와는 다른 배경에서 이주를 결행하고 있다. 임금수입을 목적으로 하기 보다는 한국과의 무역상품을 개발해서 본국으로 귀국한 후 무역상이나 기존의 사업을 확장하려는 목적에서 한국을 선택하며, 실제 한국에서 노동자로 사는 기간에도 적극적으로 무역이나 상품개발, 수출에 관여하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이들은 본국으로 귀환한 후, 애초에 의도한 목적을 이루지 못하거나, 미국이나 유럽국가로의 이주를 위한 중간단계로서 한국으로 이주했던 사람들은 다시 제3국으로의 이주를 결행하기도 한다. 본국에 정착하는 이주노동자들은 한국에서의 노동경험을 통해 관리자, 사업가로서 자신의 정체성을 강화하거나, 다른 아프리카인들과 차별적인 정체성을 형성하기도 한다.
본 연구는 이러한 분석을 통해 한국과 아프리카가 전지구화의 흐름에서 어떤 수준과 방식으로 연결되고 있는지를 제시하고 있다.

This research focuses on the African migrant workers' experience in Korea and their home country. It develops new perspective to consider African migrant workers as individual agents who decides rational choice and practice their agency. African migrant workers choose Korea for their labor migration based on their economic opportunities in Korea and their home country. They construct their identity as 'traders' or 'businessmen' instead of migrant workers in Korea. They react to the Korean society which represent them as "poor refugees escaping from famine and hunger," "socio-cultural and medical origin of disease" with their 'traders' and 'businessmen' identity.
This paper also try to illuminate the context of relationship between Korea and African countries in the era of globalization; how they are connected through migrant workers migration process.
