천막을 넓혀라: 교회 보편성 실현을 위한 배제 극복 = Enlarge Your Tent: Overcoming the Exclusions for Realizing the Catholicity of the Church

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is motivated by the phenomenon of exclusion and the demand for overcoming it by God’s people. This study is found in the Working Document for the Continental Stage of the Synod process and in the Report of Synod by the Catholic Church in Korea. Among the three types of exclusions according to Miroslav Volf, namely the exclusions of elimination, domination and abandonment, the exclusions of domination and of the abandonment are evident in these two documents. Since the distinction between ‘I’ and ‘other’ for identity is necessary, Volf distinguishes the boundary for establishing identity, using the word ‘differentiation’ from the exclusive exclusion considered as evil. On the other hand, some exclusions can be found in the Bible. For example, the exclusion such as selection and the expulsion from the community. However, these types of exclusion are not the exclusive exclusion. Selection by God is the guarantee of God’s universal salvation, and is at the same time is the mission, that is, the calling to be the instrument of God’s universal salvation. And the expulsion aims at the eschatological salvation of sinners, and has the meaning of a medicinal remedy. Based on these understandings of exclusion, this study has sought to deepen the meaning of inclusion, as manifested in the expression ‘enlarge the space of your tent.’ This metaphor contains the extension and openness of the Church as the place of communion. It goes out into the new worlds and environments. It is welcoming and inclusive of others and otherness of others. The firmness of faith is also the center that makes the identity of the Church stand firm. This research has shown that such inclusion is not only to respond to the request of God’s people on inclusion, but precisely it is the necessary requirement for the realization of the Catholicity of the Church. Catholicity, the gift and task of the Church, is the fullness of Christ’s salvation that is to be realized in all times and all cultures. It can be achieved through the inclusion of diversity in unity. Therefore, differences are not to be excluded but are the source of richness for the realization of Catholicity. Moreover, this process of inclusion is also the path of the synodal Church.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 제16차 세계주교시노드(2023-2024)를 향한 여정 중에, 2021-2022년 전 세계 각 지역 교회의 시노드 의견서를 종합하여 작성된 󰡔대륙별 단계 작업 문서󰡕와 󰡔한국 교회 종합 의견서󰡕에 나타난 교회 내 배제 현상에 대한 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 이 문서에서 배제에 대한 미로슬라브 볼프의 구분, 곧 제거와 지배 그리고 유기에 의한 배제 현상이 뚜렷하게 나타난다. 개인이나 공동체의 정체성을 위하여 타자와의 구별은 필요하지만, 악한 것으로서의 배타적 배제는 극복되어야 한다. 한편 성경 안에 나타난 선택으로서의 배제와 공동체로부터 추방이라는 형태는 배타적 배제로 볼 수 없다. 성경에서 선택은 분리되고 분열된 사회에서 배제된 이들이 하느님에 의해 선택됨으로써, 이들이 하느님의 연대의 표징이요 보증이 되게 할 뿐 아니라 보편적 구원을 위한 도구라는 사명을 받게 한다. 또한, 죄인을 공동체로부터 추방하는 것은 처벌보다는 궁극적 구원을 위한 치료의 의미가 크다. 본고는 이로부터 󰡔대륙별 단계 작업 문서󰡕가 ‘천막 터를 넓혀라’라는 은유를 통해 제안한 포용의 메커니즘에 대한 이해로 나아간다. 이 은유는 친교의 장인 교회의 확장과 개방성, 새로운 환경과 세상으로 나아감, 타자와 타자성에 대한 환대와 포용의 의미를 담고 있으며, 이러한 포용이 교회 정체성의 해체가 되지 않게 하는 중심으로서 신앙의 견고함을 말하고 있다. 본고는 시노달리타스 실현을 위해 배제를 넘어 포용으로 가는 이 메커니즘이 단순히 현재 하느님 백성의 요구에 응답하기 위해서가 아니라 교회의 본질적 특성인 ‘보편성’ 실현의 근본적 요청임을 드러냈다. 교회에 주어진 선물이자 과제인 보편성은 모든 시대와 문화 안에서 이루어지는 구원의 충만함이며, 이러한 충만함은 일치 안에서 다양성의 포용을 통해 도달된다. 그러므로 교회 안에서 정당한 ‘다름’이란 배제의 대상이 아니라 오히려 보편성 실현을 위한 풍요로움의 원천이다. 다름의 포용 과정은 보편성의 실현이요 시노달리타스를 살아가는 교회의 여정이다.
