The goal of this study is to explore the therapeutically possibility of using the game experience by clarifying that the game experience is an experience of epic of literary work, which can affect one's self-epic.
The game is a narrative medium that allows users to experience narratives through interaction with the players and increases immersion through mechanisms of effort and reward. The characteristics of game allow players to find coordination between their self-epic and their epic of literary work in the process of playing the game. This suggests the possibility that the game is a text of literary value.
Especially for the N generation, who grew up playing games from an early age, the game experience is not just a life experience, but a part of their lives and a major component of their identity. Therefore, the study aims to reveal the correlation between their game experience and self-epic by comprehensively analyzing the self-epic and game experiences of early adults in the N generation.
The study analyzed participants' game experiences through semi-structured interviews. Four works were selected to analyze the participants' self-epic, and the participants were allowed to rewrite them at their will. A total of four works were used for rewriting, and were selected as works on the efforts and achievements of early adults.
Participant A had a strong desire to win, but he had a self-epic that was obsessed with inferiority due to a series of frustrating experiences in reality. This turned out to be an extreme avoidance of competition with others in player A's game experience.
Participant B grew up in a broken family being abused by his father, who was obsessed with fair rules and expressed his desire to overcome others by achieving strong abilities through his own efforts. This desire was shown by participant B's steady play of "Stone Age," which he played with his father as a child, winning other players in the game and voluntarily contributing to the game's operation.
Participant C grew up experiencing constant conflict with his father, who was overly enthusiastic about education and disliked games. Participant C has come to suppress his desire to show off his abilities. Instead, participant C seems to have indirectly satisfied his desire to show off with his actions, such as escaping from the world in the game and steadily uploading videos of himself playing the game.
As such, the game experience seems to have influenced the current lives and self-epic of participants in common. It was also confirmed that their self-written stories influenced the way they enjoyed the game. Through this, This confirmed that one's game experience and self-epic have an influence to each other.
Through this study, we could confirm the meaning of game experience similar to the experience of reading an epic of literary work. Therefore, the study is meaningful in showing that games have a literary-therapeutic value as narrative text.
