『워더링 하이츠』와 레비나스의 에로스 = Wuthering Heights : Levinas's Eros

The purpose of this paper is to examine love－one of the dominant themes that run through Wuthering Heights－using Emmanuel Levinas’s theories of Eros and alterity. He insists that true love neither exists as a state of “confusion,” nor merely as a form of mutual identification. While the two may be capable of the closest and deepest intimacy, nothing can transcend the barrier of “proximity”; two beings can never become one. The narcissistic tendencies of Heathcliff and Catherine should be recognized as a refutation of Eros. Their bonding and identification are actually nothing more than flawed, reciprocated passion. Levinas argues that one’s denial of another’s alterity is borne out of a desire to dominate or subordinate the Other, which will always culminate in a vicious spiral of conflict, violence or war. Heathcliff’s obsession to identify with Catherine, which eventually leads him to exact cruel revenge on her and the others, can be explained clearly through Levinas’s view on Eros.
