사회복지 실천에서의 임파워먼트 접근에 대한 구성주의적 이해와 적용

국문 초록 (Abstract)

임파워먼트 접근은 최근 사회복지 실천에서 많은 관심을 끌고 있다. 임파워먼트는 실천 지향이나 가치, 모델과 같은 거시적 의미로부터 과정, 개입, 기술과 같은 미시적 실천 방법에 이르기까지 다양한 의미와 방식으로 사용되고 있다. 또한 임파워먼트 실천은 시대의 흐름에 따라 다양한 관점에서 제기되고 있다. 이 논문은 구성주의적 관점에서 어떻게 임파워먼트를 이해하고 또한 실천에 적용할 것인가를 주제로 연구한 것이다.
이 글은 구성주의적 관점을 실천하고자 하는 사회복지사들에게 임파워먼트를 실현시키는 가장 중요한 열쇠로 언어 사용에 대해 주목하도록 하였다. 구성주의적 이론에 근거하여 언어가 세계를 묘사하는 데 그치는 것이 아니라 세계를 직접 창조하는 수행적 힘을 지니고 있음을 밝히고, 이를 임파워먼트 실현에 적용하도록 하였다. 결론적으로 사회복지사와 내담자는 대화로 새로운 현실을 창조할 수 있으며, 이 때 사회복지사는 임파워먼트를 새로 구성한 현실에 포함시키는 언어와 가정을 사용하도록 권유하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Empowerment is a term widely used in recent social work literature. It covers a spectrum of meanings which are from macro perspective such as a practice orientation, value and model to a micro process such as skills solving clients’ problems. Enhancing client’s empowerment is a trend and the requirement of our times as well as it fits well with the value of the social work practice. However, there are few suggestions how social workers specifically enhance empowerment of their clients.
This article emphasizes the social workers’ use of language for empowerment of client from the constructivist perspective. The constructivist posits language does not provide only a mirrored representation of experience but creates the world by shaping one’s thoughts, perceptions and interpretations of that experience. Social workers should pay close attention to their use of language in co-constructing the more empowered world with clients. They should be aware of reflexivity in the use of language to facilitate clients’achievement of greater empowerment.
