Ji Yo˘ng-hi's chulp'ungnyu has been handed down in the Haegu˘m textbook in Seoul Traditional Art High School since 1969, but it has not been found where his tunes came from and how they were changed and played. Because Ji Yo˘ng-hi learned how to play the Haegu˘m along with Ji Yong-gu from Kim to˘k-jin, we intend to find out about the transmission and musical characteristics shown in Ji Yo˘ng-hi's chulp'ungnyu through the musical comparison with the 1930's records played by the Victor-choso˘nakdan, choso˘njo˘ngakdan and choso˘njo˘ngakjo˘nsu˘pso, respectively in which they had played.
As the first item, the number title, separation by the chapter and the appeared notes of Ji Yo˘ng-hi'schulp'ungnyu were checked. Ji Yo˘ng-hi's chulp'ungnyu is divided into p'onp'ungnyu, chatp'ungnyu, and duitp'ungnyu. And these three categories are classified again as follows: First, the category of the p'onp'ungnyu includes dasru˘m, p'onnyo˘ngsan and chungnnyo˘nsan; next, the category of the chatp'ungnyu covers from channyo˘nsan to kunak; and thirdly, the category of the duitp'ungnyu includes kyemyo˘ngarakdodu˘ri, yangch'o˘ngdodu˘ri, ujograkdodu˘ri and p'ungnyugutgo˘ri. The appeared notes and roles by the number title are divided into 5 categories.
In the second item, Ji YOng-hi's chulp'ungnyu, Victor-choso˘nakdan, choso˘njongakdan and choso˘njo˘ngakjo˘nsu˘pso were muslcally compared mainly with the Seryo˘ngsan, Sanghyo˘ndodu˘ri, t'aryo˘ng, and kunak on the frame tunes, kyo˘ngwau˘m and rhythm kkol etc. In the result of the comparison, the frame tunes were similarly processed in the order of choso˘njo˘ngakdan - Victor-choso˘nakdan - choso˘njo˘ngakjo˘nsu˘pso. The kyo˘ngwau˘m was mostly shown in Ji Yo˘ng-hi's play in splendid way and the rhythm kkol was also most diversely shown in Ji Yo˘ng-hi's tunes.
In the third item, the correlation between the Ji Yo˘ng-hi's chulp'ungnyu, music and other p'ungnyu musical groups during the Japanese colonization period. In 1920~1940, there were a lot of p'ungnyu musical groups including the Victor-choso˘nakdan, choso˘njo˘ngakdan and choso˘njo˘ngakjo˘nsu˘pso in Seoul and even in other provinces. As Ji Yong-gu and Kim to˘k-jin were the players in Seoul and Kyo˘nggi Province, it seems Ji YOng-hi learned the p'ungnyu of Seoul and Kyo˘nggi Province out of various p'ungnyu at that time.
Ji YOng-hi's chulp'ungnyu entirely shows the similar development in his play with the p'ungnyu tunes of Ji Yong-gu or Kim to˘k-jin, and more similar to those of Ji Yong-gu than those of Kim to˘k-jin. As far as the kyo˘ngwau˘m and rhythm kkol, He commands more diversified and splendid tunes than those of Kim to˘k-jin or Ji Yong-gu. In the environment of various p'ungnyu tunes In 1920~1940, it seems Ji YOng-hi did not hesitate to create more colorful and splendid tunes, showing the flexibility of p'ungnyu music's own. It was that Ji Yo˘ng-hi's chulp'ungnyu that had created own unique music from the original tune forms in Japanese colonization period. Therefore, Ji YOng-hi's chulp'ungnyu may be considered as one of the legends created in the formation process of the chulp'ungnyu. The diversity of the play methods of the chulp'ungnyu was found through such process of the passing down and development.
