영어 대화에서의 말차례 완결점을 투사하는 쉼간격의 담화 조직적 자질 분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 대화분석의 시각에서 말차례단위의 완결점을 투사하는 쉼간격의 담화조직적 자질을 대화참여자의 시각에서 분석하고자 하였다. 말차례 단위의 완결점 가까이에서 조성되는 이러한 쉼간격은 현 말차례 단위뿐만 아니라 현재 담화 전체를 조율하는 특성이 있음을 제시하였는데, 이는 그러한 쉼간걱이 현 말차례 단위의 완결점을 넘어서 다음 말차례 단위가 계속 발화될 것임을 예비적으로 투사한다는 점에서 보여진다. 이는 대화에 참여하는 화자와 청자의 상호작용 패턴의 분석을 통해 관찰되는데, 화자는 쉼간격 후에 말차례 단위를 마친 후에도 and나 but 같은 접속사를 발화하여 새로운 말차례 단위가 따라 나올 것임을 보이고, 청자도 쉼간격 후에 완결되는 말차례 단위 자체에 대해서는 빠르고 간단한 '중간단계의' 협조적 반응만을 보이고, 그 다음에 따라 나오는 새로운 말차례 단위에 대해서는 보다 본격적으로 반응을 하는 뚜렷한 경향이 있음을 제시하였다. 또한 이와 같이 뒤이어 나오는 새로운 말차례 단위가 현 담화의 요점을 구성하는 경우가 많다는 점에서, 말차례 단위의 완결점을 투사하는 쉼간격은 현 담화의 요점이 곧 발화될 것임을 청자로 하여금 미리 예측하게 하는 담화조직적 자질이 있음을 제시하였다. 이러한 담화조성 과정에서 쉼간격 주변에 상대방의 동의를 전제하는 you know와 같은 담화표지가 많이 발견되고, 또한 쉼간격 후에 상대방이나 제삼자의 체면을 위협할 소지가 있는 '예민한' 표현이 발화되는 경향이 많고 이를 완화시키는 장치로서 and so forth 등과 같은 완화표현이 오는 경향이 있음을 보임으로써, 청자로부터 '중간단계의' 협조적 반응만을 이끌어 내고 곧장 다음 말차례 단위로 나아가고는 하는 화자의 전략적 측면과 쉼관격이 관련이 있음을 보였다. 이러한 쉼간격의 특성은 이야기 맥락에서도 관찰되었는데, 화자가 이야기의 주요 부분으로 나아가기 이전에, 이야기의 배경적 정보나 등장 인물을 소개하는 지점에서도 쉼간격이 관찰되고, 이 지점에서 청자는 다음에 나올 주 이야기 부분을 이해하는데 기초가 되는 제반 사항에 대한 이해확인이나 수정 등을 시도할 수 있다. 전체적으로 이러한 이야기 맥락에서도 말차례 단위의 완결점을 투사하는 쉼간격은 현 말차례 단위의 완결점뿐만 아니라 앞으로 나올 이야기의 주요 부분까지도 투사하는 담화조직적 자질이 있음을 제시하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

From a conversation-analytic perspective, this paper examines the interactional import of pauses before TCU completion (hereafter PBTCs) as an object of analysis that is demonstrably oriented to by the participants in conversation. PBTCs have interactional implications not only for the construction of the TCU in which they are found but also for shaping the turn (and discourse) by way of projecting an additional TCU (or sets of TCUs). PBTCs project not only the TCU-final component, which is formulated as a 'mid-point' designed to solicit only a mildly collaborative uptake, but also an additional TCU (or a set of TCUs), which is produced as a more upshot-relevant unit that warrants an upgraded, more fully collaborative (or confrontational) uptake by the recipient. It is proposed that this interactionally motivated structural feature of PBTCs furnishes the speakers with the resource for using them as a place where they can plant an expression with delicate or face-threatening content and present it as something that is designedly to be taken up only briefly in passing by the recipient. It is shown that the discourse-organizational pattern involving PBTCs, with the TCU-final component serving as a mid-point in the turn being unfolded, is also relevant to story-telling contexts where TCUs containing a PBTC are oriented to by the story-recipient as a place furnishing a pre-upshot stage in which such actions as repair or clarification can be relevantly initiated and pursued before the speaker moves on to the main segment of the story.
