This Study is based on the criticism about the design applicability of Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) research and aimed to improve that design applicability of POE. It is researchers who evaluate buildings and show the results, but it is designers who apply those results into the design. Therefore the design applicability problem of POE might more or less come from the perception difference between researchers and designers. it would be desirable that the approach to solving the problem begins with understanding differences between researchers and designers, especially their perception about various design informations. I made a survey of researchers' and designers' perception on evaluation items; the analysis of the findings obtained from the survey is as follows. First, in comparison between existing evaluation items and design informations, they have not only common things but different things. Designers think some of evaluation items used in POE are directly applicable 'design informations' but others are not. When we present the result of POE to the designers, researchers had better not to forget it must be 'relevant to design works'. Next, more than half of respondents (both of researchers and designers) answered that the evaluation items presented in survey would be useful to design. At the same time most of them answered that they got design informations from existing plan of similar cases. After all, designers take POE results positively but tend not to use as design informations actually. Also it means that POE results researchers present are not applicable enough. It is why researchers require to supply more easily applicable POE results for designers. Third, details of findings by items are as follows; the items on the plan system of a house show the highest degree at both importance and applicability in two groups, the items on the maintenance, occupants' behavioral characteristics and economic values show the lowest degree. It is the items on conditions of location, quality of construction, occupants' behavioral characteristics, maintenance and economic values that have sharp differences between their importance and applicability; most of respondents appeared that they considered those items' importance high but applicability low. Also there are some items that their importance and applicability have distinctive differences between researchers and designers. The above is the findings from comparative study on evaluation items in POE between researchers and designers. They have some similarities and some differences. We could see that there exist different perception and understanding each other between researchers who perform POE research and designers who accept those results from this study. Hereafter, more profound analysis of perceptual differences between groups and more directly connecting study to improvement of POE's design applicability are expected to be performed.

The Korean semiconductor equipment industry faces dual pressures from global leading firms and rapidly emerging Chinese competitors, increasing the need for the strategic allocation of limited public R&D resources. However, conventional R&D planning has largely relied on qualitative expert judgment, fragmented patent indicators such as patent counts, citations, and IPC classifications, and non-standardized planning procedures. In addition, insufficient linkage between technology analysis and policy decision-making has limited the effectiveness of evidence-based public R&D investment planning. To address these challenges, this study designs and evaluates a data-driven R&D technology planning process that integrates patent-data analysis, Large Language Model (LLM)-based semantic analysis, and expert validation. Methodologically, the study adopts Design Science Research (DSR) and develops the technology planning process as a methodological artifact. The proposed process consists of eight stages: selection of the analysis target, collection of patent data, identification of core patents, LLM-based semantic analysis, derivation of technology issues, expert validation through a Modified Delphi method, derivation of government R&D support technologies, and development of Requests for Proposals (RFPs). The empirical analysis was conducted across eight semiconductor process equipment domains, including six front-end and two back-end process areas. A total of 38,475 published patents from 30 global leading and major domestic firms during the period 2020–2024 were collected and analyzed. Through a three-stage filtering procedure, 1,677 core patents suitable for technology planning were identified. LLM-based semantic analysis generated 28 technology clusters, which were validated by an 18-expert panel using a Modified Delphi method. The validated technology clusters were translated into strategic technology issues and government R&D support technologies and were ultimately transformed into 21 RFPs consistent with the planning format of government R&D programs. Expert evaluation further confirmed that the proposed process secured utility, validity, and applicability, thereby satisfying the evaluation requirements of Design Science Research. The results demonstrate that strategic technology issues can be systematically identified from patent data and transformed into policy decision-making outputs at the level of government R&D support technologies and RFPs. Repeated application of the same process across all eight semiconductor equipment domains confirmed its reproducibility and scalability within the semiconductor equipment industry; transfer to other industries is framed as a condition-based analytic generalization rather than as an empirical claim. Furthermore, the proposed process bridges the interpretation gap between technology analysis and policy decision-making by providing an Endto-End technology planning framework that links patent intelligence directly to government R&D investment planning outputs. The study thereby demonstrates that a reproducible technology planning process can be developed to transform patent intelligence into government R&D support technologies and RFPs for strategic technology investment decisions. The academic and practical contributions of this study are fourfold. First, it designs and evaluates a standardized End-to-End R&D technology planning process that connects data analysis, technology issue identification, expert validation, support technology derivation, and RFP design. Second, it proposes a human–AI collaborative technology planning methodology that combines LLM-based semantic analysis with expert validation, enabling patents to be interpreted through the technical functions and problem–solution relationships embedded in patent specifications rather than through quantitative indicators alone. Third, it establishes a systematic framework for transforming technology intelligence into policy-level R&D support technologies and RFPs, thereby enhancing the objectivity, explainability, and reproducibility of public R&D investment decision- making. Fourth, it redefines the Modified Delphi method — traditionally a forecasting instrument — as a validation mechanism that screens LLM-generated analysis for hallucination, overinterpretation, and misplaced policy conversion, thereby establishing a formal human-in-theloop quality-control layer for AI-assisted technology planning. The proposed process is expected to serve as a practical decision-support tool for establishing R&D investment priorities and advancing technology planning systems in national strategic technology domains. While acknowledging limitations associated with patent data coverage and the use of LLMs, this study demonstrates the feasibility of a methodological artifact that integrates patent intelligence, AI-based semantic analysis, and expert validation to support strategic R&D investment decision-making. In doing so, it offers a new paradigm for data-driven technology planning and contributes to bridging the gap between technology analysis and policy decision- making.

Design for complex social issues often needs to address sensitive topics such as mental health. However, effectively eliciting rich and nuanced information on these topics through traditional user research methods can be challenging, as they often require extensive experience and practice. This challenge in user research hinders designers’ ability to empathize and collaborate with users, thereby hindering meaningful solutions for societal change. This lack of suitable methods for sensitive topics creates a critical gap in design research. This research aims to bridge this gap by investigating a critical research question: How can designers overcome limitations in user disclosure on sensitive topics during user research to elicit user needs and foster empathic understanding? The purpose is to empower users and designers to collaborate in tackling challenging social issues by developing practical user research tools that enhance communication between users and designers. A multi-phased approach was used to address these challenges. The first phase focused on understanding challenges and developing the Empathic Facilitation (EF) model through a literature review, identifying difficulties and strategies to encourage user disclosure. This knowledge informed the development of the EF model, which emphasizes the medium used to provide Expression Support and Interpretation Support. The potential of dolls as a medium for fostering empathy was also explored in this phase. The second phase focused on designing and evaluating tailored user research methods, the Self-Reflection Doll (SRD) method, as a novel user research method informed by the proposed EF model. Three empirical studies investigated user research on mental health topics (burnout, student adaptation, youth well-being) with young adults. Studies 1 and 2 compared the SRD method to traditional approaches. Study 1 compared the SRD method to focus group and cultural probe, analyzing strengths and weaknesses. Study 2 compared the SRD method with persona creation, photo diaries, and focus groups to isolate the doll's impact on empathy. Study 3 applied a modified SRD method in a real-world design project, assessing the method’s practicality. The third phase involved refining the model and developing practical guides based on thematic analysis across all studies. They explored key connections between the EF model and established user research concepts, discussing the role of a medium in design, narratives, and self-reflection. This analysis solidified the model’s theoretical foundation and highlighted its unique contributions to eliciting disclosure in user research on sensitive topics. Based on research findings, the improved EF model and practical guides for adopting the EF model in user research are proposed. Lastly, the final phase explored the broader contribution of the EF model to the field of empathic design in the context of design research on sensitive topics, particularly regarding methods for eliciting user needs and fostering empathic understanding. Overall, the key contributions of this research are twofold. First, it introduces the Self-Reflection Doll (SRD) method as a practical user research method within empathic design techniques. Second, it proposes the Empathic Facilitation (EF) model, offering generalizable principles applicable to various user research methods for sensitive topics. This approach of design research empowers users, particularly vulnerable populations, by providing them with expression support to share their emotional experiences from a comfortable distance and provide interpretation support to foster empathetic understanding in designers. Ultimately, it promotes active participation in the design process and fosters empathy among participating stakeholders, leading to more inclusive and intimate collaborations in participatory design.
Objective Design Fixation Analysis as a Basis for AI-Designer Teaming in Constrained Design
Hunter, Jacob G Purdue University ProQuest Dissertations & Theses 2025 해외박사(DDOD)
For more than three decades, design fixation has been investigated by the design research community, mainly in the context of open-ended design tasks. Much of the work has focused on mitigating design fixation so that engineers and designers can fully explore a design space. Previous work subjectivity evaluates the similarity of designers' solutions to example solutions and proposes myriad methods to mitigate fixation. However, not every design problem is open-ended, and engineering designers often face already well-defined problems. They also frequently use computer-based design software that constrains their design process. Therefore, open-ended design techniques to study and mitigate fixation, as they currently stand, are not well-suited to constrained design problems. Fortunately, constrained design problems lend themselves to the use of objective and quantitative metrics for detecting fixation, which in turn could enable the use of artificial intelligence (AI) based agents to guide designers during the design process. In addition, prior work has shown that neurocognitive signals measured using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) have the potential to reveal designers' cognitive processes in a way that could be interpreted by an AI agent. However, this would require characterizing the relationship between those signals and objective fixation metrics. To address these challenges, this work presents a methodology to study and quantify design fixation in computer-based constrained design scenarios. The methodology is demonstrated using an adapted version of the HyForm Experimental Research Platform. Objective design fixation data and brain activation signals are collected and analyzed using quantitative metrics to understand how well participants explore the solution space. This research provides new tools for studying design fixation in iterative, constrained design tasks and paves the way for future development of online AI agents to assist designers.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the core concepts of expressive color ability and introduce experiential teaching theory into expressive color courses through teaching experiments. The study aims to design effective teaching plans targeting the components of expressive color ability, thereby enhancing students' capabilities in this area. By analyzing the impact of experiential teaching theory on the expressive color abilities of Chinese university students, this research ultimately offers feasible suggestions and empirical references for applying experiential teaching in expressive color courses within the context of higher education in China. This paper primarily employs literature research, content analysis, and mathematical statistical methods to conduct a study on improving university students' expressive color abilities based on experiential teaching theory. Based on prior research on expressive color abilities, the study first categorizes these abilities into four dimensions: observational, analytical, creative, and expressive abilities. Subsequently, scales specific to expressive color abilities were developed to enrich the tools for measuring student engagement. Most existing scales measuring university students' expressive color abilities in China are localized adaptations of classic scales from Western countries. There are fewer original scales developed specifically for Chinese university students that fit the Chinese educational context, and their applicability and reliability across different academic disciplines still require validation. This study has developed four scales based on relevant theories and prior research, which can be used as tools to measure the engagement of art and design students in general undergraduate institutions. Finally, the study designed teaching experiments that emphasize practical thinking and rely on practical problems for creative solutions. These experiments introduce experiential teaching theory, which focuses on practical thinking and practical creative problem-solving, into expressive courses, aiming to enhance students' expressive color abilities. In the teaching experiments of expressive color, the situational function of experiential teaching was applied to color sketching and color analysis, while the experiential function and situational interactive function were applied to the construction and expression of color, ultimately achieving the effect of improving students' expressive color abilities and grades. Therefore, experiential teaching theory fills the gaps in previous research on expressive color abilities. The research conclusion indicates that experiential teaching has a significant positive impact on students' expressive color abilities. The functions and characteristics of experiential teaching, the dimensions of expressive color abilities, and the relationship between the two clarify the internal mechanism of applying experiential teaching theory to expressive color courses. This understanding further clarifies the application model of experiential teaching theory in expressive color courses, providing references for subsequent research. By validating the effectiveness of this theory through teaching experiments, the study offers guidance and reference for university art and design teachers to conduct research and practice in teaching expressive color courses based on experiential teaching theory. To some extent, this can promote the enhancement of university students' expressive color abilities and further improve the effectiveness of expressive color teaching. Key words: Experiential Teaching, Expressive Color Ability, Teaching Plan Design, Experimental Research.
This dissertation explores the multidimensional phenomenon of K-pop through the lens of hyperobjects, emphasizing its relevance to design and frames a new perspective on designing for music culture. K-pop, originating from South Korea, has evolved into a global music and entertainment industry, captivating a diverse international audience and transcending traditional boundaries. However, comprehending the complexity and impact of K-pop necessitates a fresh perspective that acknowledges its hyperobject-like nature. Drawing upon Timothy Morton's concept of hyperobjects, this study employs a multidimensional analytical framework to examine the interconnected aspects of K-pop within the context of design. By conceptualizing K-pop as a hyperobject with qualities of nonlocality, temporal scale, and vastness, this research endeavors to shed light on its elusive nature and the multifaceted forces at play within the industry. The dissertation adopts a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative analyses, design research, media theory, and philosophy to emphasize the relevance of design in understanding and interpreting K-pop as a hyperobject. The literature review encompasses an exploration of theories, such as object-oriented ontology, Actor Network Theory, superflat, and Benjamin Bratton’s concept of ‘the Stack’, to establish a theoretical foundation for understanding the role of design in the creation and dissemination of K-pop's narratives and cultural significance. Additionally, it examines existing research on hyperobjects, popular culture, and globalization to situate this study within the broader academic discourse. Qualitative methods employed in this research include in-depth interviews with K-pop fans to better understand K-pop material culture. Through content analysis of music videos, fan interactions, and social media discourse, the study delves into the visual, symbolic, and subtextual elements that contribute to K-pop's hyperobject-like nature and its implications for design. The research reveals that a perspective of K-pop as hyperobject creates a new paradigm away from the Holism of Modernism, and the cynicism Moreover, this research investigates the transnational spread of K-pop and how network interactions between fans and idols are successfully designed by official agencies. By examining the intricate relationships between fandom, technology, and globalization, the study explores how K-pop functions as a hyperobject that transcends physical borders, blurring the boundaries between virtual and physical realities, and influencing design practices and cultural phenomena on a global scale. By unraveling the multidimensional narratives and cultural significance embedded within K-pop, this dissertation contributes to the academic discourse, particularly in the field of design, by providing insights into the role of design in shaping and communicating hyperobjects. It offers a deeper understanding of K-pop's global impact and its implications for design processes, visual communication strategies, and cultural analysis. Ultimately, this research highlights the broader relevance of studying popular culture, media, and globalization to better frame the objectives of designing for music culture.
Journal of Art & Design Education, Journal of Design History, Design Issues, Journal of Architecture, Journal of Architectural and Planning Research 등의 다섯 종류였으며, 국제 전문매체는 The Architectural Review, Architectural Record, Architectural Digest 등의 세 종류였다. As we progress into the 21^(st) century, culture has become a global issue, and has risen as an alternate centerpiece concept in the environmental design. Although the concept of culture has been emphasized, it still remains to be ambiguous. Therefore, this study is aimed to get an opportunity to review the overall cultural phenomenon in the environmental design, and give a systematic viewpoint of the cultural phenomenon and structuralize it. Since this study began with classification process of the phenomenon related with 'culture' in the field of environmental design overall, the classifying process did not adopt the approach to preselect the criteria but adopted the phenomenological inductive approach and content analysis method. As objects of analysis, the international journals were "Journal of Art & Design Education", "Journal of Design History", "Design Issues", "Journal of Architecture" and "Journal of Architectural and Planning Research", and the international magazines were "The Architectural Review", "Architectural Record" and "Architectural Digest." These materials used in this analysis were published in the time period of 12 years ranging from 1990 to 2001. An analysis was drawn up for each paper and article, and a key word was selected from the original document according to the researcher's main concern. The viewpoints to be introduced through this study were synthesized in both research and practical aspects as shown in the followings. First, in the research aspects, three viewpoints were drawn: the trend of using the word 'culture'; the area in which the study of culture is being performed; the phase of approaching culture. Second, in the practical aspects, four viewpoints were drawn: the trend of using the word 'culture'; the standpoint of cultural criticism in the time axes; the form of environmental design; the design concept of environmental design. Based on the point of view above, this study was organized in the following three fields: research on culture, cultural criticism, and cultural design work. In order to compare three different fields, the trend of using the word 'culture' was used as a common point of view. The synthetic structure was proposed to understand to what extent the domain of culture was found in the field of environmental design. Followings were drawn as conclusions. First, the structure of cultural research was synthesized from the following factors: hierarchy system ranging from micro to macro, the approach phase of an observer ranging from passive to active. From this structure, the following discoveries were made. In an indoor environment where the culture is easily applied to, only investigative researches were performed, presenting the possibility of thriving research in the times to come. Meanwhile more weight was put on corresponding research in urban environment presenting a study that emphasizes political measures against cultural phenomena. In the case of architectural environment, researches in their application phases were prominent, which led to profound researches. Second, the cultural criticism was formed in the time axes. This revealed that the frequency of cultural criticism has gotten lower as time went by. Therefore, nothing conclusive can be said about the future without observing past and present. Third, cultural design work was synthesized with three types: institutional, residential and commercial environment, and six concepts: traditionality, modernity, eclecticity, nature-pursuit, human- pursuit, and technology- pursuit that derive from two factors, uniqueness and ideality. Traditionality, modernity, and eclecticity are derived from uniqueness and nature-pursuit, human- pursuit, and technology- pursuit are derived from ideality. This cultural design showed the following facts. The institutional environment generally pursued ideality and sometimes sought uniqueness from the modernity resulting in visually innovative design. Meanwhile, the residential environment has a strong tendency to pursue uniqueness from eclecticity. The commercial environment did not have a strong cultural character. Fourth, in order to see the difference between the practical field and the theoretical field, the usage of the word 'culture' was analyzed. According to the analysis, rather than culture of oneself, cultures of others were brought up more frequently thus showing that the interest in cultures of others had been increasing. In addition, value of culture was strongly considered. The word 'multicultural' was mentioned frequently and the word 'history' was generally referred to with 'culture'. Fifth, based on the facts above, culture formed throughout environmental design was integrated into a synthesized structure. The synthetic structure showed the followings. In environmental design, culture was generally expressed in the past and the present of the time axes, and was found with more emphasis in the application phase of the architectural environment. Meanwhile, cultural policies were considered important in urban environment and cultural design was implemented in architectural environment. In addition, in the indoor environment, the study of material culture found in traditional interior item was an important culture-related field. In architectural environment, there was a tendency to discuss the culture of the past and the present through criticism. The structures above was systemized by the phenomenon itself and presented as the outline to see in overall the aspects related with culture. The structures mentioned can be the objective and absolute framework of cultural area, and will show the present phase and suggest the way to go forward for the area of culture in the field of environmental design.

Design has been considered a practical way to solving wicked problems—malicious, vicious, and more than simply bad, indicating complexities that an individual, a group, or an organization cannot address and solve easily alone—and an area that has considerable feasibility of cross-, multi-, inter-, and trans-disciplinary research. The scope, methods, and objectives of design are not fixed. Design is conceptualized in various ways from various perspectives. Given this variety in approaches to design, design research may have philosophical disparities (chiefly, difference in viewpoints on design) and communicative difficulties (chiefly, difference in meanings of design). Little research has delved into the two formidable barriers (philosophical disparities and communicative difficulties) to making design research more interdisciplinary. A relevant empirical study needs to fill in the dearth with relevant evidence. With this research background, the dissertation aims to characterize design research in other disciplines, through connecting between design research types and design meanings used in each type, and to suggest a framework to map the characteristics of design research. The framework-applied mapping helps visualize the patterns of characterizing design research. This dissertation employed both quantitative and qualitative methodologies for data collection. A quantitative study at the initial stage, through a frequency analysis of articles and journal titles (journals accredited by Korea Citation Index), constrained the scope of other disciplines to social sciences. In this process, journal titles were categorized into specific disciplines. Then, a pilot test using qualitative coding of journal articles published in 2014 and interviews with design researchers confirmed the reliability of research methods. Afterwards the main study involved in analyzing the data made from qualitative coding by the content analysis. The results of the main study were interpreted through the framework. When the framework-applied illustration portrays an overall complete form of a flower with all petals, the result indicates that design research ranges in various types of research and various meanings of design. Among social sciences, the study of business administration had a more complete flower, compared with other social science disciplines. By contrast, design research makes a concentration on specific sides when a flower and petals look incomplete. Among social sciences, design research in the study of law was chiefly characterized as philosophical and basic research on aesthetics of objects. Applied research turned out a dominant type of design research across social sciences. This type of research takes a mainstream in social science design research. In the meantime, disciplines in the social science field tend to use the meanings of design terms in various ways. This serves as compelling evidence of the difference in research perspectives across disciplines even within the social science field. Despite differences in cross-disciplinary recognition and usage of design terms, a generic trend shows that design research in social science disciplines reflects the characteristics of praxiology, which refers to the study of efficient action. The proposed framework has more merits in exploring the characteristics underlying design research in other disciplines than design researchers’ previous studies that focused internally on design communities. This comparison confirmed the rising attention to, academic interests in, and practical performance of design research in other disciplines. Design research goes well in social science disciplines. However, this dissertation took a step forward, beyond the confirmation. The study explored how different and even disparate characteristics and traits of design research are across disciplines within the social science field, thereby deeply discussing possibilities of interdisciplinary research related to design. This discussion helps identify and address philosophical and communicative barriers to design-centered, design-applied, or design-used research across disciplines. The dissertation can contribute to gaining and further developing a sense of interdisciplinary potentials that the term “design” owns.
