    • Design of ion-conducting polymer and utilization of anode for next-generation secondary batteries

      RANK : 232287

Ion-conducting polymers are high-performance polymer materials that contain functional groups with polarity and charge, facilitating the conduction of ions through the polymer matrix. This functional polymer has been utilized in battery applications as the polymeric electrolyte, electrode, and binder material because of its thermal, mechanical, and chemical stability. Recent advancements in energy storage, conversion systems, and environmental protection have increased the demand for high energy density and long-life batteries. Consequently, it is essential to address issues such as dendrite formation and volume expansion during charge and discharge at the metal anode. To overcome these limitations, the necessity for flexible and easily processable materials has prompted the focus on the development of ion-conducting polymers. First, ion-conducting polyimide containing PEO units was synthesized by condensation polymerization and used as anode protective film for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The polyimide coating layer contains polar functional groups, such as ether (-O-) and carbonyl (-C=O-), which provide ionic pathways for zinc ions to move within the polymer. We demonstrate that cycle stability and performance depend on polyimide ionic conductivity and chemical structure and discuss design factors required to create high performance protective coating layers. Second, a 3D crosslinked network was synthesized by introducing an aromatic diamine as a crosslinking agent into the PVA-g-PAA (PgP). The PgP was synthesized through radical polymerization, using water as an eco-friendly solvent. The formation of amide bonds within the rigid molecular structure provides increased mechanical stability and improved binding forces, resulting in a 3D crosslinked network. We demonstrate that the functional group of the crosslinked agent affects the chemical and physical interactions of the binder, which in turn affects battery performance. This work shows a multifaceted approach to the design of balanced 3D crosslinked network binders for secondary batteries. By doing so, we present the synthesis and characterization of ion-conducting polymers for implementation in next-generation secondary batteries. Additionally, we believe this approach is essential to designing ion-conducting polymers.

    • Ion conduction and ionic speciation of Li-ion battery (LIB) electrolytes

A highly conductive electrolyte is an essential requirement for state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries. However, the delicate interplay between ionic conduction and the microscopic solution structure of battery electrolytes remains elusive. For this, it is imperative to understand the ion–ion and ion–solvent interactions governing the ion transport behavior of the electrolyte solutions to enhance the performance limit of electro-chemical devices. To meet the expectation of the advanced battery systems, it is mandatory to develop in-novative functional electrolytes ensuring stable, fast operation of LIBs. The rate capability of LIBs heavily depends on the mass transport rate in the electrolytes, which is largely dependent on ion-ion and ion-solvent interactions. Nevertheless, our understanding of the solution structure and its relation to ion transport behav-ior still remains at a premature stage. Therefore, solution structures and their ion conduction behaviors have been studied in this work. Firstly, the most widely used carbonate-based electrolytes were investigated. Despite similar physico-chemical properties of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC), the ionic conductivity of their Li-salt solutions displays large disparity, of which origin remains elusive. We herein investigate the corre-lation of the conduction behavior with the solution structure of DMC and DEC electrolytes and their ethylene carbonate (EC) mixtures of 0.1–3.0 M LiPF6 using Raman spectroscopy, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS), and pulsed-field gradient NMR (PFG-NMR) spectroscopy. We reveal that polar DMC conformer is formed more readily than DEC conformer, leading to enhanced Li-salt dissociation and thus high ionic con-ductivity in DMC solutions. It is also confirmed that the conformational isomerism is facilitated the most in DMC/EC electrolytes. Secondly, the ionic speciation and conduction behavior in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) electrolytes of 0.1–2.0 M LiPF6 and LiBF4 were examined using Raman spectroscopy, DRS, and PFG-NMR spectroscopy. This study elucidated the impact of solvent characteristics on ionic conductivity. Notably, LiPF6-DMSO, which had the highest dissociation in DMSO solvent, showed the lowest conductivity, but LiBF4-DMSO exhib-ited higher ionic conductivity with low salt dissociation. A DMSO, a solvent with a large donor number (DN), ion motilities become a dominant factor in ion conductivity than the salt dissociation. In addition, in most of the cases, lithium ions were transported by the vehicular mode, only except for the highly concentrated LiBF4-DMSO. These results provide insight into the solution structure and the interaction of the salt/solvent. Lastly, hopping conduction was intentionally induced by engineering the solution structure. High power performance becomes important for LIBs, so the fast Li-ion transport in electrolytes is in urgent need. To date, the ionic conduction in non-aqueous electrolytes has been described by the vehicle-type migration mechanism. However, recent studies suggest that ion-hopping can emerge in highly concentrated solutions. The adequate solvents having multiple coordinating sites, which establishes the so-called solvent-bridge struc-ture, have been one of the necessities for hopping conduction. However, this study reports the presence of Li-ion hopping conduction even in dilute solutions with monodentate acetonitrile (AN). We investigate the con-duction behavior and ionic speciation of AN solutions of 0.1 – 6.0 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (LiFSI) and lithium trifluoroacetate (LiTFA), representative dissociative and associative salts, using PFG-NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and DRS. PFG-NMR measurements show that the self-diffusion coefficient of Li-ion is faster than that of the anion in LiTFA-AN, whereas the opposite trend is observed in LiFSI-AN. Ra-man and DRS analysis elucidates that the faster Li-ion diffusion in LiTFA-AN is attributed to the Li-ion hop-ping conduction. Li-ion hop-ping is enabled by the unique anion-bridge structure driven by the highly associa-tive nature of LiTFA. The implication of the hopping conduction is demonstrated for LiFePO4 symmetric cells. The 4 M LiTFA-AN exhibits better rate performance than the 1 M LiTFA-AN despite lower ionic con-ductivity and high viscosity. This study challenges the conventional wisdom that associative Li-salts are un-suitable for battery electrolytes, and encourages to revisit numerous Li-salts unexploited so far due to their associative nature. A solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) membrane based on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has been designed to replace the conventional liquid electrolyte because of its feasible ion conduction and high chemical, thermal, mechanical, dimensional stability, interfacial compatibility, various functionalization, and simple fabrication process. PEG is applied for ion-conduction material to modify with other flexible polymers such as poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) under grafting copolymer and semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) for SPE application in lithium metal battery via constructing (i) copolymer electrolyte membrane based on poly(arylene ether sulfone)-grafting-poly(ethylene glycol) (PAES-g-PEG) with various functional end groups; (ii) semi-IPN structured electrolyte membrane based on poly(vinyl alcohol)/ poly(ethylene glycol) (PVA/PEG); and (iii) in-situ polymerized electrolyte membrane based on poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(vinyl ethylene carbonate) (PVA/PEG-PVEC); and (iv) composite electrolyte membrane based on semi-IPN structured PVA/PEG matrix and halloysite nanoclay systems. Firstly, the copolymer electrolyte membranes were prepared by grafting 2000 molecular weight PEG with various functional end groups into the PAES backbone. Among them, the nitrile (-CN) end group modified PAES-g-PEG showed the highest ion conductivity and enhanced thermal, mechanical, and chemical stability. The semi-IPN structured electrolyte membrane synthesized by crosslinking poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) in the presence of PVA exhibited an enhancement in both lithium ion conductivity and mechanical and thermal stability. Besides, the in-situ polymerized electrolyte membrane prepared from PVA/PEG-PVEC showed a high lithium ion transfer number, improved lithium ion conductivity, and optimized interface contact between the cathode and SPE. Additionally, the composite electrolyte membranes combined both superiorities of SPE and inorganic electrolyte, showed excellent Li+ conducting capability and promising potential for the application of lithium metal batteries. Kim, Ilhwan Sungkyunkwan university 2021 국내박사

      RANK : 232270

In this study, the possibility of improving ion transport and electrochemical performance through 3D nano-structuring of electrolyte and anode materials of lithium-ion batteries was studied. Through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the three-dimensional nanostructure of the prepared material was analyzed. In addition, various electrochemical analyzes were performed to confirm the electrochemical change of the material related to the structure. In this study, first, a study on the porous separator / gel electrolyte was conducted. An ion conductive polymer (polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropene; PVDF-co-HFP) material was electrospinning to fabricate a porous, representative-area polymer membrane. A cross-linked structure between polymer fibers was created by controlling the electrospinning conditions, and the electrochemical performance characteristics were improved through high wettability. Through the porous cross-linked structure between the electrolyte and the separator, it was possible to confirm the possibility of improving ion movement and improving battery performance. Next, the possibility of improving battery electrode performance was conducted by structuring the negative electrode into a three-dimensional nanorod. Three-dimensional nanorod carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coated with crystalline silicon were fabricated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and sputtering. The crystallization coating layer through laser heat treatment served as a buffer to prevent volume expansion during the ion reaction of the electrode. Through this, the stability of the electrode could be improved and stable battery capacity characteristics could be obtained. Finally, we conducted a study on aligned graphite electrodes through magnetic fields. Pyrolytic graphite with magnetism was aligned using a rotating magnetic field. Electrochemical performance was improved by optimally arranging the side plane of graphite where ions enter and exit. This study suggests the possibility that 3D nanostructure materials can be applied for the purpose of improving the performance of ion batteries.

    • Irreversible Electronic Time-Temperature Indicators Enabled by Phase-Transition-Triggered Resistance Switching in Ion-Conducting Poly(urethane-urea)s

      RANK : 232268

Reliable monitoring of temperature abuse in frozen cold chains requires indicator materials that can convert transient thermal exposure into stable, high-contrast signals that can be easily digitized at the packaging level. In this study, we developed an irreversible ion-conducting polyurethane-urea (PUU) platform for highly reliable Time-Temperature indicators (TTIs) targeting frozen cold chain monitoring. The sensor exploits the phase transition of poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMG) segments as a threshold-triggering event, converting thermally induced amorphization and enhanced electrode-polymer interfacial contact into a drastic decrease in electrical resistance of more than 99%. Raman and FT-IR spectroscopic analyses revealed an unusual ion-dissociation behavior, where urea and urethane groups strongly solvate lithium ions and promote charge-carrier generation even under high-salt conditions. Furthermore, the crosslinked PUU network suppresses chain rearrangement during re-cooling, thereby preserving the low-resistance state and enabling irreversible recording of thermal history. By optimizing the salt concentration and crosslinking density, the composition with [O]:[Li] = 32:1 and 30% crosslinking degree achieved a balanced combination of sensitivity, stability, and reproducibility. This work presents a polymer-electrolyte engineering strategy for materials-based electronic TTIs and offers a promising route toward irreversible smart packaging sensors for cold chain applications. • Enhancement of Li-Ion Conductivity in Oxide Solid Electrolytes via LiClO4 Addition and Pressure-Assisted Sintering

Jeongwoo Jang

      RANK : 232268

This study focuses on improving the ionic conductivity of oxide-based solid electrolytes for application in multilayer ceramic all-solid-state lithium batteries (MLCBs), with an emphasis on a low-temperature pressure-assisted sintering process for glass-ceramic electrolytes. Oxide-based solid electrolytes have attracted considerable attention as promising materials for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) due to their high volumetric energy density and enhanced Li-ion conductivity. However, high-temperature co-sintering in multilayer ceramic architectures often leads to volatilization of graphite anode active materials and the formation of secondary interfacial phases between the active material and the electrolyte. To overcome these challenges, a low-temperature pressure-assisted sintering process was applied to a Li2O-B2O3-Al2O3 (LBA) electrolyte with LiClO4 addition. Crystalline phase growth at 500 °C and the incorporation of LiClO4 improved the glass network structure and enhanced Li-ion conductivity. The LiClO4-added LBA exhibited a highly densified microstructure through pressure-assisted sintering, achieving an ionic conductivity of approximately 3.57 × 10-5 S·cm-1 and an activation energy (Ea) of 0.25 eV. These results demonstrate an effective strategy for improving the electrochemical performance of oxide-based electrolytes while enabling their application in next-generation multilayer all-solid-state batteries, providing a promising approach for the future development of solid electrolyte materials for lithium-based all-solid-state batteries.

A semi-interpenetrating network was built through the crosslinking of PEGDA to optimize the polymer morphology for Li-ion conduction. Further, LATP, a NASICON-type Li-ion conductor, was added to enhance the single Li-ion conductivity and mechanical properties. The synthesized HSE membrane of PAN:PEGDA (60:40) containing 30 wt% of organic solvents and 12 wt% of LATP showed outstanding Li+ conductivity of 1.06 × 10-3 S cm-1 and the lithium transference number of 0.64 at room temperature with good flexibility along with the tensile strength of 1.76 MPa in a wide electrochemical window up to 4.8 V vs. Li+/Li, maintaining the long-term stability with Li metal over 1000 cycles. Owing to these superior properties of composite membranes, the LiFePO4|HSE|Li cell exhibited an excellent discharge capacity of 164 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C-rate, maintaining the coulombic efficiency of 99% after 50 cycles at room temperature.

In the field of hydrogen fuel cell technologies, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are employed due to their superior thermomechanical-chemical stability and ion conduction property. Nevertheless, there are obstacles to PEMFC commercialization, such as lower durability in crossover and acidic conditions and cost issues because of the requirement for platinum catalysts. Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), that work in alkaline environments, are drawing interest as a solution to these problems. Even though AEMFCs are less expensive than non-precious metal catalysts, there are still problems, such as poor ionic mobility because of the small size of the OH- ions and problems with chemical resistance owing to the degradation of polymer structures in alkaline environments. These are being investigated using a variety of methods, such as mixing, coating, composite production, functional group modification, and polymer structure design. In this study, to enhance the ion conductivity and physical properties of AEM, quaternized poly(phenylene oxide) (QPPO) was synthesized using poly(phenylene oxide)-based polymers as starting materials via polymer bromination and the Menshutkin reaction. Commercially available anion exchange membrane material Fumion was blended to produce FAQP-x membranes with varying contents (5, 10, 15, 20 wt%), and the blending effect was verified by comparison with the QPPO membrane. The structure of the synthesized polymers was confirmed via ¹H-NMR and FT-IR analysis, verifying the successful benzylic bromination of BrPPO and the quaternization reaction of QPPO. The membrane surface structure was observed using FE-SEM and AFM, and the potential for ion transport channel formation was confirmed via microphase separation. Thermal stability was evaluated through TGA analysis. The evaluation of membrane properties (water absorption rate, swelling rate, IEC) showed that IEC improved with increasing Fumion content, with FAQP-15% exhibiting the highest IEC (2.12 meq g⁻¹). Ion conductivity measurements also showed FAQP-15% exhibited the highest conductivity at 58 mS cm⁻¹ at 90°C, a value significantly improved compared to FAA3. Furthermore, in the alkaline stability evaluation, FAQP-15% demonstrated the ability to maintain conductivity under long-term conditions, suggesting it maintains structural stability even in highly alkaline environments. These results demonstrate that blending Fumion into PPO-based polymer systems is an effective strategy for enhancing the conductivity and properties of AEMs. FAQP-15% holds sufficient potential as a candidate anion exchange membrane for AEMFCs.
