Vol.40 No.2
The purpose of this study is to examine representation for migrant workers depicted in a Korean TV documentary series titled ‘Finding My Daddy’ from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. Specifically, this study analyzed formation of discourses by overlexicalization strategy based on transcribed materials for interviews with migrant workers and narrations in the program. Through the interviews, the program overemphasized migrant workers have been kept working to remit almost all the salary to their family suffering from financial hardship although being in ill health caused by physically demanding job and they have been supported by Korean supervisors. It led to a discourse considering migrant workers as objects of pity. On the other hand, through the narrations, the program overstressed Korean supervisors have positively assessed migrant workers and the workers have been successfully assimilated into Korean culture. However as for the supervisors’ statements, they lavished praises on the workers for obeying their commands. It produced a discourse regarding migrant workers as the lower class and acculturated others. The results revealed that this program categorized migrant workers as the social weak and the other in the negative framework.

The purpose of this study is to apply the study in Korean education by analyzing conversation among migrant workers in Korea. In this study, how to take place and allocate turn taking is studied based on transcribed materials of the discussion of migrant workers. Furthermore, the aspect of occurrence of turn taking is also studied. In the study, some notable features of obstructing smooth proceeding is shown - interrupting discourse, reacting only as audience, failure in using proper words by the person who is taking, for example. Besides, mutual effort to make a smooth discourse is also shown, which is considered that migrant workers intend to understand their insufficient skill of Korean speaking and make up for each other. It is another outstanding feature that migrant workers perform a long speech in one turn, and each has few turn taking compared with clause.

The CDA compares how the Chosun Ilbo and Kyunghyang Shinmun represent undocumented migrant workers. While both use nominalization and passive voice to obscure agency, their ideological framing diverges. The Chosun associates workers with crime and job scarcity, foregrounding the administrative perspective. Conversely, the Kyunghyang centers on workers' voices and structural issues, viewing them as economic resources, although occasionally prone to overinterpretation. The findings demonstrate that both newspapers strategically deploy linguistic resources, from lexical metaphors to structural foregrounding, to align them with their specific discursive purposes and ideological standpoints.

This paper aims to consider how social discourses on migrant workers/foreign workers are formed, based on representations of migrant workers/foreign workers described in recent five-year articles of Dong-A Ilbo and Kyunghyang Shinmun. Representation refers to a depiction of social doer, situation, and event. As one of studies on a relation between language and ideology, this study is also an attempt to see whether or not the emotion of aversion to and ostracism at outsiders (especially, migrant workers/foreign workers) is produced, distributed, and spread by the media. Aversion to and ostracism at outsiders is one of our social issues along with conflicts between genders and between generations. Besides, discourses of the media are socially formed and form the society, at the same time. Therefore, it is considered that it is meaningful to discuss how outsiders are represented in the media. In addition, it is known that Dong-A Ilbo and Kyunghyang Shinmun have different political stances. It is anticipated that it would be possible to find out two different views of our society by analyzing representations of migrant workers/foreign workers.
Vol.39 No.1
The present study ethnographically investigated three medical institutions by critically focusing on migrant worker-domestic doctor interactions and critiquing the findings and implications of previous studies. First, it started with a small free-of-charge hospital (Hospital C), which was the most similar to those in previous studies. Then, it turned to a free-of-charge medical center for migrants (Center B). Finally, it explored a large fee-for-service general hospital (Hospital A). Despite their similarities as free-of-charge institutions, the patients at Hospital C and Center B were dramatically different in terms of their professional training levels, countries of origin, languages, ages, and types of their health conditions. The differences between Hospital A and the other two institutions were even more significant in all the five areas. Thus, the in-depth and close analysis of the three institutions illustrated that the finding of the previous studies which argued that the patients at free-of-charge clinics were mostly unskilled laborers from a limited number of countries were only partly true. The present study proposes a more critical applied linguistic study of migrant patient-domestic doctor consultations.
