This Study is based on the criticism about the design applicability of Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) research and aimed to improve that design applicability of POE. It is researchers who evaluate buildings and show the results, but it is designers who apply those results into the design. Therefore the design applicability problem of POE might more or less come from the perception difference between researchers and designers. it would be desirable that the approach to solving the problem begins with understanding differences between researchers and designers, especially their perception about various design informations. I made a survey of researchers' and designers' perception on evaluation items; the analysis of the findings obtained from the survey is as follows. First, in comparison between existing evaluation items and design informations, they have not only common things but different things. Designers think some of evaluation items used in POE are directly applicable 'design informations' but others are not. When we present the result of POE to the designers, researchers had better not to forget it must be 'relevant to design works'. Next, more than half of respondents (both of researchers and designers) answered that the evaluation items presented in survey would be useful to design. At the same time most of them answered that they got design informations from existing plan of similar cases. After all, designers take POE results positively but tend not to use as design informations actually. Also it means that POE results researchers present are not applicable enough. It is why researchers require to supply more easily applicable POE results for designers. Third, details of findings by items are as follows; the items on the plan system of a house show the highest degree at both importance and applicability in two groups, the items on the maintenance, occupants' behavioral characteristics and economic values show the lowest degree. It is the items on conditions of location, quality of construction, occupants' behavioral characteristics, maintenance and economic values that have sharp differences between their importance and applicability; most of respondents appeared that they considered those items' importance high but applicability low. Also there are some items that their importance and applicability have distinctive differences between researchers and designers. The above is the findings from comparative study on evaluation items in POE between researchers and designers. They have some similarities and some differences. We could see that there exist different perception and understanding each other between researchers who perform POE research and designers who accept those results from this study. Hereafter, more profound analysis of perceptual differences between groups and more directly connecting study to improvement of POE's design applicability are expected to be performed.
Integration of AIGC and Design: Theoretical and Practical Research
Integration of AIGC and Design: Theoretical and Practical Research Artificial intelligence generated content (AIGC) marks the arrival of the era of artificial intelligence 2.0. The continuous integration of key technologies such as GAN, CLIP, Transformers, Diffusion, etc. has triggered the explosive growth of AIGC, realizing the leap from computational intelligence to perceptual intelligence and cognitive intelligence, which has brought profound impacts to society. Through the learning of large- scale data, AIGC can solve tasks across fields and adapt to various real-life scenarios with minimal adjustments. The significance of AIGC lies not only in changing production tools in the short term, but also in changing social production relations in the medium term, changing productivity in the long term, placing data value at the core of resources, and accelerating the rapid advancement of social digital transformation. AIGC technology has brought revolutionary changes to the field of art and design. A series of AI tools have enabled art design to change from the traditional creation mode centered on personal inspiration to the creation mode driven by AI large models. A large number of students and practitioners in the field of design have begun to use AIGC tools to assist in completing design tasks. AIGC tools simplify the design process by implementing dynamic visualization and rapid prototyping, enabling designers to quickly and effectively experiment with different concepts, thereby reducing the time and cost associated with traditional design iterations. Although AIGC has demonstrated the potential to break through traditional design patterns, both academia and industry have dual views on this emerging technology, with praise and doubt, support and strong opposition. The focus of the debate mainly revolves around three aspects: technology, application, and ethics. First, in terms of technology, AIGC's powerful multimodal generation capabilities have met basic creative needs, but for a professional and complex field like design, it is necessary to comprehensively consider multiple factors such as creative motivation, user needs, and design costs. How can AIGC be effectively combined with the design process to produce high-value application models? Secondly, in terms of application, AIGC is considered by many to be a terrible tool because its high degree of automation can replace the work of many designers. How should the relationship between AIGC and designers be defined? Is it a simple replacement or an auxiliary symbiosis? Third, in terms of ethics, the essence of AIGC is to train and learn based on a large amount of existing data in reality. Imprecise training strategies may cause the model to reproduce the data used in the training process. When applied to design, an indirect business-oriented activity, it will inevitably cause concerns about similarity and plagiarism warnings and may cause harm. How to avoid ethical issues needs to be solved at the technical level. Specifically, designers need to master a series of AIGC theoretical foundations to avoid commercial problems caused by insufficient training strategies in personalized applications. In summary, the application form, technical dependence and research theory of AIGC in the field of design still lack clear explanations. The relationship between AIGC and design still needs to be systematically explored theoretically, and the specific application process of AIGC in personalized design creation also needs to be summarized. Therefore, this study starts from the two perspectives of theoretical research and application practice. First, through a systematic literature review method, it explores the research trends of AIGC in the field of design and the specific application methods and corresponding contributions at each stage of design, establishes a theoretical framework for the application of AIGC in the field of design, promotes the integration of design thinking and computational thinking, and lays the foundation for further application. Secondly, the application methods of AIGC in personalized design are summarized through key application links such as building personalized data sets, training generation models, and evaluating model effects. Specifically, the third and fourth chapters are theoretical research parts. Chapter 3 first uses the PRISRM system literature analysis method to deeply analyze the technical foundation on which AIGC technology relies, and shows the research trends and main results of AIGC in the field of design. The research trends of AIGC in the field of design are discussed in detail, and research insights are summarized for relevant practitioners. The results show that the existing research on AIGC in the field of design is mainly concentrated in three aspects: development of new algorithm models, practical applications in different design fields, and theoretical discussions. At the same time, the application research trend of AIGC in the field of design is also manifested in three directions: from point-to-point target generation to controlled design space; from simple parametric target generation to integrated design cognitive generation; from holistic design generation to modular closed- loop design system development. Chapter 4 further analyzes the specific application cases and corresponding contributions of AIGC in the entire design stage (creative generation, design generation, auxiliary suggestions and evaluation feedback). It discusses in detail how to use AIGC to create visual and semantic stimuli, extract design insights according to user needs, and generate innovative designs. At the same time, it also explores how AIGC participates in human-computer collaboration as a design assistant and its application in design evaluation and feedback. Through theoretical research from the shallow to the deep, the specific application angle and application method of AIGC in the field of design are established. In the Chapter 5, taking the design generation, the most widely used link, as an example, by improving the traditional fine-tuning generation model method, a creative texture generation method based on the stable diffusion model of LoRA is proposed, and a variety of personalized texture image application scenarios are established by combining the conditional control neural network. Specifically, firstly, a dataset containing 3K creative texture images and corresponding text descriptions is constructed, and the existing state- of-the-art diffusion model is further fine-tuned so that it can generate creative texture images. Finally, by combining the conditional control neural network, we apply the generated patterns to interior, clothing and product packaging design. The results show that compared with other mainstream large models, the creative texture patterns generated by the proposed method have achieved better performance in multiple evaluation indicators. In addition, excellent results have been achieved in multiple applications. Through the actual application process, we provide detailed application guidance for relevant practitioners. Looking forward to the future, design innovation will be increasingly influenced by AIGC, and the application of AIGC in various stages of design innovation is expected to be more complex and integrated. By integrating AIGC, designers can achieve a higher level of personalization, enhance user engagement and accelerate the innovation cycle.

This thesis introduces magneto-rheological (MR) fluid actuators including brake, valve, and damper. Especially, the detailed arguments on the electromagnetic design methodology proposed to improve performances of these actuators are achieved. In order to improve the performances of the MR fluid actuator, external magnetic fields should be applied to the MR fluid effectively. Therefore, it is important that the magnetic circuit built in the actuator is well designed with the electromagnetic viewpoint. Here, the magnetic circuit is composed with the MR fluid, the electromagnetic coil, and the ferromagnetic yoke for forming the magnetic flux path. For this purpose, two effective approaches are proposed. One is to shorten the magnetic flux path by removing unnecessary bulk of the yoke for the magnetic circuit, in order to improve the static characteristic of the actuator. The other is to increase the magnetic reluctance of the magnetic circuit itself by minimizing its cross-sectional area through which the magnetic flux passes while avoiding the magnetic saturation, in order to improve both dynamic and hysteretic characteristics. After designing and manufacturing the conventional type actuators and the proposed type ones, it is verified through the magnetic field analysis and basic experiments that the proposed MR fluid actuators are superior to the counterparts. From these results, it is expected that the proposed design methodology can be usefully used as a fundamental design material for expanding application fields of the MR fluid actuators. MR fluid actuators are promising for further improving performances and functions of conventional control systems. Recently, the attempts to employ MR fluid actuators in engineering fields have been more and more increased by numerous researchers. In this part, several control systems featuring the proposed actuators are introduced to investigate their feasibility and applicability. First of all, the applicability of the MR damper to aircraft landing gear system for attenuating undesired shocks and vibrations during the landing phase is verified through a series of simulation analyses. It is notable that the characteristic time constant of the MR damper is one important factor determining the vibration control performances of the landing gear system and it plays a role similar to the weighting factor employed in the hybrid controller combining the functions of the skyhook and groundhook controllers. Next, a 1-DOF hybrid haptic device employing an MR brake and a DC motor is presented. With the help of the proposed hybrid actuation, the improved transparency in free motion and the widen output range in constrained motion are achieved simultaneously. It is remarkable that friction forces in haptic systems should be compensated with both qualitative and quantitative viewpoints, unlike conventional control systems. Finally, for the purpose to display force feedback to the fingertip of the human user interacting with any virtual objects in virtual environment, a novel haptic hand master is proposed; ‘Smart Glove’. It is shown that their interface safety and haptic stability can be improved by the use of the MR fluid actuator. Especially, an outstanding contribution lies in that the miniaturization of the MR fluid actuator shows the possibility for further various applications.
Design and Implementation of Application-Specific Fourier Ptychographic Microscopes
Lee, Kyungwon
Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) is a computational imaging framework that significantly enhances spatial resolution and enables quantitative phase retrieval by stitching multiple low-resolution images taken under angularly varying illuminations. By decoupling optical resolution from the limitations of a physical objective lens, FPM offers a cost-effective and scalable pathway to achieve gigapixel-scale imaging and quantitative phase sensitivity. However, despite its computational elegance, the transition of FPM from benchtop demonstrations to real-world deployment remains limited due to a series of unresolved practical challenges, including system bulkiness, restricted illumination flexibility, alignment sensitivity, and incompatibility with specific sample types or constrained environments. This dissertation aims to bridge that gap by presenting a design-oriented and application-aware framework for implementing FPM systems that meet the functional requirements of real-world settings without sacrificing imaging quality. The core philosophy of this work lies in the co-design of optical hardware and reconstruction algorithms, tailoring both to reflect the constraints and opportunities posed by specific imaging scenarios. Rather than building a single all-purpose microscope, we propose a platform approach: a collection of specialized FPM implementations, each optimized for a particular set of environmental, structural, or operational constraints. The proposed systems address four key application domains: (1) incubator-compatible live-cell imaging, (2) portable microscopy via smartphones, (3) programmable illumination using OLED displays, and (4) reflective-mode imaging with polarization-sensitive detection for opaque and metallic samples. These are not treated as isolated case studies, but as instantiations of a generalized design framework rooted in constraint-aware optimization. From a hardware perspective, we explored illumination geometry optimization by adjusting LED pitch and distance to preserve angular coverage while minimizing the physical footprint. In the smartphone-integrated system, pupil-matching optics and folded paths were employed to maximize the usable field of view and minimize aberrations. In the OLED-based system, the spatial and spectral coherence characteristics of micrometer-scale emitters were rigorously modeled to meet FPM requirements at reduced working distances, and multiplexed illumination strategies were devised to reduce acquisition overhead while preserving Fourier domain coverage. We developed a comprehensive polarization-sensitive reflective FPM system for reflective samples that fundamentally reconfigures the optical architecture for non-transmissive specimens. This system employs oblique illumination through an LED array, incorporates beam splitters for reflection-mode operation, and integrates controllable polarization states in illumination and detection paths. A key innovation is the integration of polarization-resolved detection using rotatable analyzers, enabling simultaneous acquisition of both quantitative phase topography and polarization contrast maps. On the algorithmic front, we adapt reconstruction methods to accommodate system-specific factors such as region-of-interest segmentation, coherence constraints, angular sampling irregularities, and polarization-enhanced contrast mechanisms. The polarization-sensitive reflective FPM system required the development of specialized algorithms for a comprehensive polarization analysis, extracting Stokes parameters, Jones matrices, and material-specific optical characteristics. GPU-based parallelization was also leveraged to accelerate patch-wise recovery and enable time-lapse imaging of dynamic biological processes in live-cell experiments. The experimental validation spans a wide range of biological and industrial specimens, including HeLa cell cultures, blood smear slides, stained tissue samples, silicon microstructures, and various reflective materials with known polarization properties. Across all implementations, we demonstrate resolution improvements of up to 4× over native optics, robust phase recovery with <8\% error relative to reference measurements, and practical acquisition times. For example, on the live cell platform, we achieved stable imaging for 48 hours with minimal motion artifacts. In the OLED system, we demonstrated phase reconstruction by multiplexed illumination acquisition. Most significantly, the polarization-sensitive capabilities enabled detection of birefringence patterns and subwavelength defects in patterned wafers that remained completely invisible under conventional amplitude or phase-only imaging, demonstrating the critical advantage of multimodal contrast mechanisms for industrial inspection applications. Through these efforts, this dissertation demonstrates the feasibility of FPM implementation in constrained environments while establishing a generalizable framework for constraint-driven computational microscopy design. The integration of engineering considerations within algorithmic development and, conversely, the incorporation of computational requirements into hardware design, establishes foundational principles for the next generation of portable, modular, and application-specific quantitative imaging platforms. These findings have direct implications for diverse fields, including point-of-care diagnostics, lab-on-chip systems, embedded microscopy applications, semiconductor metrology, and advanced materials characterization requiring integrated topographical and polarimetric analysis capabilities.

Every human being has a desire to express what they think or emotion with music. However, it is quite impossible to describe something with music unless you have basic musical concepts formed with you. Among many musical concepts, the rhythm is regarded as the most fundamental, key factor. However, the public education cannot satisfy every single demand of a learner and for those who cannot afford private education as personal tutoring, it is hard to have a chance to express their musical desires properly. Hence, the study designed a tablet PC-based application so that any students can learn rhythm to describe their musical ideas. Recently, the tablet PC has been in the spotlight in the educational field and by working on the tablet-PC application, the study aims to search ways for the application to be used in the music instruction The actual development and research in the study was carried out in two sections which were designing and developing of an application. In the designing section, the study analyzed a commercialized music instruction application and examined a music textbook of sixth graders so that the study could find any proper information to be used in the music instruction. In the end, the study came up with rhythm factors and music pieces from the textbook analysis. In addition, by developing an application model for a concept learning theory and applying screen and storyboard designing principles, the study determined a concrete frame for the development. For the application development section, the study established an application development environment and development processes to propose a practical execution program. The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, regarding the musical concept learning, teaching and learning method of the music instruction can be achieved even by the general concept learning methods in the education field. Second, the music educational materials should be designed in consideration of educational curriculums so that the learners will have an interest in music. Third, not only will the smart education realize efficient learning effects but it will also work as a medium that would connect general musical knowledge acquisition and the educational musical ability improvement of the learners. Fourth, in order to develop a music instruction application, a developer will need to have general knowledge about music, curriculums, teaching-learning models, screen designing theories, storyboard-making theories, teaching strategies and application developing tools. Fifth, the study successfully proved that information technology can be used in the music instruction at school. The study has understood that encouraging the learners to voluntarily join music instruction is the most important factor in designing the educational application screen. As a result, the study came up with a learner-centered screen. With the application developed in the study, the learners will experience music more often at school and home. In addition, the application will help the learners have more interests in music. There are not many smart educational applications developed in the market and we definitely need to work on the development of those applications more actively. Considering how fast the technology is being developed now, in the near future, we will see ourselves using many of the smart educational applications at school and home.
According to statistics from the Korea Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of diabetes patients in their 30s stood at 121,568 as of 2020, up 25.5% from four years ago. In particular, the prevalence of young diabetes patients in their 20s increased by 47% from 23,798 in 2016 to 35,005 in 2020. (Song Eun-ju, Nam Won-seok, 2024) Over the past five years, the growth rate of young diabetes patients has been increasing noticeably among people in their 20s and 30s. The number of patients diagnosed with PRE-DIABETES, which is lower than the diabetes diagnosis standard level, but higher than the normal level, is one in four adults over the age of 30, or 24.6% (about 6.6 million). (Lee Jae-sun, Roh Ji-hyun, Koo Ha-young, Park In-hye, 2021) Diabetes has been considered a disease in people in their 40s and older in the past, but it has become an inevitable disease for young people in their 20s and 30s, including changes in eating habits and changes in the scope of activities. In the case of diabetes patients in their 40s or older, there are many cohabitants who have a family or live together, but young people in their 20s and 30s have a large number of single-person households, so there are no cohabitants or family members to take care of them. Although the interest of diabetes is expected to increase as the number of diabetes patients increases, the diabetes recognition rate was 66.6% and the treatment rate was 62.4% from 2019 to 2021, and the recognition rate and treatment rate were not much different from 2013 to 2015. Based on the total diabetes patients, the data showed that the prevalence of patients increased, but did not affect the cognitive rate. (National Health Statistics Plus, 2021) Especially for young diabetes patients, if managed, the recovery rate was higher than that of diabetes patients in their 40s and older, but there was a lack of management unlike diabetes patients in their 40s and older. Young diabetics who are in this situation need a way to manage diabetes. Diabetes applications are used as an aid in managing diabetes. In the case of existing diabetes applications, designs such as large letters were used to make it easier for diabetes patients in their 40s and older to use, and they had relatively solid images, and they often ended up simply measuring blood sugar and making data rather than helping them manage them, and it was difficult to present the information to hospitals that treat them. In the case of hospital treatment due to diabetes, it was necessary to use the hospital's application to see the test results, and the user had to access the application directly to enter the information in the diabetes application. Solving this problem required changes in the function and design frequently accessible to young diabetics, and the resulting tests require the activation of public health data. Domestic public health data is still in the research stage, and private companies have studied diabetes application design guidelines that reflect health care and medical data activation so that young diabetes patients can easily manage it before or in the future. Two types of applications and health care applications used by people in their 20s and 30s, and diabetes applications were analyzed based on six types of 'arrangement', 'color', 'icon,' typography', 'graph' and 'fun elements', and five diabetes applications were compared to specify the components of the diabetes application. 1:1 We have completed the final application design guidelines reflecting the modifications and supplements of the applications identified through the usability test interview. The study conducted research on applications as a means for young diabetics to maintain healthier lives, and aims to study design guidelines that utilize applications to help health care, not just for records.
This study attempts to solve the problems of traditional architectural design methods by implementing Augmented Reality technology during the initial stages in architectural design. Current methods used during the initial stage of architectural design pose many difficulties in creating and managing 3D structures. Architects must first draw on paper, build models and make them into 3D through CAD(Computer-Aided Design) program in order to realize their imagination. This process not only takes time but also hinders smooth and active communication and understanding in tight schedules, both of which are required in the architectural environment. As a result, unclear 3D models are generated that bring further confusion. This also is the direct reason for impetuous decisions, lead to inevitable situations that can be costly. Augmented reality can be the key to such issues in architectural design. Users can not only see the 3D models from any view and size in the virtual reality, but also can make simple adjustments rather than to fix the actual 3D models in reality. Hence, users no longer need to develop models through actual drawings, but virtually through AR technology. Nevertheless, this is not the complete solution to the fundamental issues in architectural design. Another key would be to simplify the process in creating and modifying the virtual 3D models in augmented reality environments. Architects should be able to bring their imagination into reality, by easily creating 3D models right in front of their eyes. Thus, recent studies have been actively focusing on 3D user interaction to generate virtual 3D models in the augmented reality environment. This study chose three specific factors that should be considered for the use of 3D user interaction in the augmented reality environment when working on architectural designs. First, the user must be able to generate the exact 3D model as he or she intended. Existing 3D user interaction had the users to draw lines in the air or to select where the model’s vertices would be. Such methods may distort the original intention of the users if they wish to see the models from a different point of view and from different directions. Secondly, modeling must be done rapidly. Many ideas and prototypes should be checked and produced during the initial phase of architectural designs, and hence the use must be able generate models quickly. Lastly, while most 3D user interaction adopts Air-gesture methods, this leads to fatigue when users work for long hours. Therefore, users should be able to use for a long time but should be fatigue-efficient. This paper seeks to provide architectural design application in augmented reality environment that delivers virtual 3D models rapidly and exactly as the user intended, by adding 3D user interaction that is fatigue efficient, which can eventually expedite initial architectural design process. To do so, the combination of table touch interaction and hand posture recognition interaction were used in the system. Table touch interaction uses an actual table as a touch screen that identifies the moment the user touches the surfaces with fingers. Hand posture recognition activates functions related to each hand postures when the user forms hands in designated forms. In other words, hand postures act as short keys. By combining the two interaction types, the user can benefit in three ways. First, the user can generate accurate models by using ‘extrude’ that is commonly used in CAD after drawing 2D models through table touch interaction for 3D models. Second, the user can be more efficient with time by designating frequently used functions to specific hand postures when working on 3D models. Last, the user can work fatigue-efficiently as table touch and hand posture recognition interaction allows users to place their hands on the table, compared to traditional methods.

Back-related health issues have become one of the most serious and widespread health issues. Specifically, because increasingly more people tend to work in a sitting position at their work places, which can lead to pain in the upper or lower back, the risk of developing back problems is increasing rapidly. It is quite obvious that individuals need to avoid situations in which bad posture could become a serious disease, such as scoliosis or kyphosis, by adopting good sitting posture. To solve these issues, and with IT-related technologies, such as IoT, wearable sensors, and UX design being rapidly developed, various solutions are appearing from various areas. Our aim in this paper is to build an enhanced multi-platform with various and novel approaches for solutions that cover back-related health problems with the following three research questions: “How can we track the posture of the user?”, “What kind of feedback would be suitable for the user?”, and “What application can we use to motivate people to be a longterm users of the system?” Thus, according to each consideration, this paper comprises of three phases covering back problem-related topics, such as posture tracking, a feedback system, and a motivationdriver, and each phase has its own related work, personal solution, prototyping, and evaluation session. Then, we conducted an overall user study for further discussion and comparison using the prototypes made in each phase. As a result, we could suggest the multi-platform system, which is made up of a wearable sensor, a physical ambient avatar, and a game-like designed application. In the posture-sensing phase, we devised a wearable sensing prototype that can be attached to the user’s back. In the ambient feedback phase, we designed a physical ambient feedback system with a flower-shaped avatar that bends its stem according to the data derived from the wearable sensor. The physical avatar changes the color of its stem and gives detailed feedback on modalities, including visual, audio, and physical cues. In the last phase of the game-like designed application, we implemented the prototype of the application, which has richer game dynamics that the previous applications did not have. In our application, there is a digital avatar that visually functions like the physical avatar; the digital avatar changes its state according to the data from the wearable sensor, but can also be raised by the data. That is, the user can foster and customize the digital avatar in the application by adopting good posture. Two contributions are made by this paper. Firstly, it explores the solutions for each phase related to back healthcare and develops prototypes with slightly enhanced methods. Secondly, beyond the single prototypes of the phases, the paper showed the possibility of building a multi-platform system that is comprised of a sensing part, feedback part, and motivation-driving part, which have not been implemented in previous research to the best of my knowledge.
