    • Pedagogy for Latino/a Newcomer Students: A Study of Four Secondary Social Studies Teachers in New York City Urban Newcomer Schools

      Taylor, Ashley M Columbia University 2013 해외박사(DDOD)

      RANK : 2943

This dissertation study examined how teachers in four newcomer schools conceptualized and implemented social studies education for newcomer Latino/a youth. I designed this multi-site, collective case study to examine the perspectives and decision making of four social studies teachers' enacted pedagogy for Latino/a newcomer students. I documented how social studies teachers (U.S. History and Global History) were teaching Latino/a newcomer youth within urban newcomer high schools through the research question: how do four secondary teachers conceptualize and implement social studies education for newcomer Latino/a youth? As evidenced in their culturally and linguistically relevant pedagogy, teachers in this study provided constant support, encouragement, and opportunity for Latino/a newcomer students to succeed academically, and encouraged active civic engagement by using students' cultural, linguistic, and civic knowledge and experiences as central to their pedagogy. I analyzed the findings within and across four case studies to develop an emerging grounded theory of culturally and linguistically relevant citizenship education. This developing grounded theory analyzed the intersections of culturally relevant pedagogy, linguistically responsive teaching, and active and engaged citizenship. These intersections and cross-case analysis of the four teachers' social studies pedagogy for newcomer Latino/a students developed five principles of culturally and linguistically relevant citizenship education. These principles included: pedagogy of community, pedagogy of success, pedagogy of making cross-cultural connections, pedagogy of building a language of social studies, and pedagogy of community-based, participatory citizenship. This study has the potential to add to and expand on the discourse regarding social studies pedagogy for culturally and linguistically diverse students (Ladson-Billings, 1995b; Lucas & Villegas, 2011), newcomer schools (Short & Boyson, 2000), English Language Learners (Cruz & Thornton, 2009), and citizenship education for newcomer youth (Salinas, 2006). Possibilities for future research might include examining how Latino/a immigrant students' cultural and linguistic experiences influence their perceptions of social studies and how they conceptualize citizenship. Furthermore, additional research might also explore how the findings in this study may be used to develop a more culturally and linguistically responsive teacher education program, create professional development opportunities for in-service teachers, and examine how elementary teachers and teachers in rural/suburban contexts conceptualize their social studies pedagogy for immigrant youth.

The purpose of the present paper is 1) to clarify the concept of critical pedagogy within EFL classrooms, based on the directions and issues of critical pedagogy in general as well as 2) to define the meaning of Korean high school English teachers and students' experience of the critical pedagogy within EFL classrooms, 3) to identify its structure, 4) to devise its educational intervention by applying an educational ethnographic approach which is based upon a qualitative research method, and 5) to suggest practical ways to apply critical pedagogy within EFL class as well as educational interventions to implement it.The sampling for this study has been carried on November, 2005 with a sample of 12- 6 local high school English teachers and 6 high school English learners.Data were collected by face-to-face in-depth interviews. In addition, to prevent material omission, this study used a recorder with the permission of informants. The analyses of collected data were mainly based on Spradley(1980)'s research method. The results analyzed as domain, taxonomy and component were as follows:The first domain found was 「learning of critical thinking」; the taxonomies included “logical assessment skills', 'factual assessment skills' and 'comparison and assessment skills of the viewpoints'. In particular, the sub-taxonomies under 'logical assessment' included 'clarifying the concepts in the statements', 'confirming the coherence or the contradiction among the statements', 'finding the premises and composing them in the shape of the reasoning' and 'searching for the logical errors'. In addition, the sub-taxonomies under 'factual assessment skills' included 'clarifying the meaning of the statements', 'distinguishing the facts from the opinions', 'deciding the reliability of the information sources' and 'conforming the check of the statements'. Finally, the sub-taxnomies under 'comparison and assessment skills of the viewpoints' included 'understanding the hidden assumptions or the premises', 'confirming the proprietiness of the principles in reasoning', 'deciding the applicable range of the principles', 'considering the other principles' and 'deciding the results'. This results showed that most of the critical thinking skills which Lee, Myeong-Ah(1993) had categorized in the previous study could be applicable to this new field of critical pedagogy within EFL classrooms. The second domain found was 「learning of critical disposition」; the only taxonomy was also 'learning of critical disposition.'The third domain found was 「learning of other educational skills」; the taxonomies included 'learning cooperative skill', 'content-summary skill' and 'creativity‘.Based on the above results, it was confirmed that the three theoretical models such as 「learning of critical thinking」, 「learning of critical disposition」 and 「learning of other educational skills」, mutually interact, and closely link with the others. This result was reconfirmed by the second analysis which the same researcher conducted in half a year, on May, 2006.It conveyed significant insights and the need for educational interventions in current Korean high school EFL education as follows.First, there is a demand for including the goal of critical pedagogy as a more concrete goal in the new English national curriculum.Second, there is a demand for encouraging teachers to educate the importance of critical disposition as a main component of critical pedagogy to promote its effectiveness in EFL class.Third, there is a demand for developing well-designed teaching and learning activities to enhance other desirable educational skills such as cooperative skill, content-summary skill and creativity in EFL class implementing the critical pedagogy.Fourth, there is a demand for assisting EFL teachers in terms of teacher training programs as well as other educational administration which may affect the incorporation of critical pedagogy in class.Fifth, there is a demand for providing a web database in which EFL teachers can share their experiences and information regarding their success or failure of implementing critical pedagogy.Based on these results, the present paper suggests practical ideas to apply critical pedagogy to the areas of English subject such as reading, writing, speaking, listening, culture, grammar and vocabulary in more integrated ways.

In Search of Instruction Method based on Bruner's Folk Pedagogy* Instruction is made up of interactions between teachers and students, and between students and students. For active interaction with students in instruction, the teacher's role is important. When knowing how students understand what a teacher teaches and knowing what students think about the class, a teacher can teach with best instruction methods, which students can understand. In instruction and learning environments, it is important for students to understand what a teacher says; for the teacher, it is critical to understand what students are thinking about. Understanding mutual mind between teacher and students is related to intersubjectivity, which is the way human beings get to know others' mind. Human can construct a meaning by himself by internalizing culture through language use. Learners become intersubjective by sharing meanings with others through interaction with teachers and their classmates. The teacher's instruction method should facilitate interaction between teacher and students, and help learners construct their own meaning. Therefore, this thesis explored instruction methods which innovate pre-existing school instruction by overcoming its problem based on Bruner's idea, folk pedagogy. Folk pedagogy is what applies folk psychology in education. Folk psychology is an exploration of the human mind through human's intentional language and behavior. In the perspective of folk psychology, human behavior's tendencies are affected by cultural belief internalized in the human mind. Bruner's folk pedagogy is based on folk psychology, which pays attention to how the mind acts here and now, how children's mind learn, and what develops children's mind. Human belief reflects culture and folk pedagogy is what applies folk psychology, which explores the human mind through those human's intentional language and behavior. In the perspective of folk pedagogy, teacher's instruction method and educational tendency are affected by his thought and belief about learner in mind, and they appear in instruction and learning environments. As teacher's belief and thought about learners reflect culture and they affect instruction method formation, it is necessary for the teacher to have a most useful theory about the learner's mind. In consequence of analysis of pre-existing instruction's problem, there were top-down communication in instruction and learning environment and students' low participation because of teacher's one-way knowledge teaching by rote. Moreover, there is a tendency for the teacher to focus on instruction method and strategy rather than instruction contents, and communication confined to the textbook's contents and methods appear as problematic. To innovate those pre-existing instruction's method's problem, this paper explored alternative instruction methods and their relatedness to folk pedagogy based on four models about the learner's mind. First model views a learner as an imitator. A learner acquires methodological knowledge through expert's modeling and it makes cultural transfer between generation. However, it is just an imitation, so it cannot be applied to another situation and learners cannot learn function flexibly; therefore, it is more appropriate to traditional society. Second model view children as learning from didactic exposure. The learner's mind is ‘Tabula rasa' and he can acquire new propositional knowledge from mental ability's help in didactic situation. Third model sees children as thinkers. From this perspective, children can think logically and speak rationally through discourse with others. Also, through meta-cognition which think and reflect children's own thought, they can correct their own idea or concepts. This perspective enables learners to facilitate understanding and construct knowledge through discussion and cooperation, and the role of education is to help children understand well. Fourth model views children as knowledgeable learners. Children living the present acquire and interpret knowledge by sharing discourse with people in the past, who are related to knowledge known culturally through the long term. In this way, they can acquire more than that. The teacher should help children grasp the distinction between personal knowledge and what is taken to be known by the culture. Children must not only grasp the distinction, but also understand its basis, as it were, in the history of knowledge. The four perspectives about the learner's mind make teacher's instruction methods and assessment methods differently in accordance with each type. Rather than understanding in the light of their partialness, they should be thought of as parts of a broader continent. It is both important for the children to know their own thinking process and for the teacher to help them become meta-cognitive. This paper suggested instruction method based on folk pedagogy with narrative. Accordingly, instruction contents should be set as one which can develop learner's ego, imagination, and creativity. Also, the contents should be constructed as narrative structure which can construct meaning through interaction between teachers and students, and between students and students. Moreover, students acquire problem-solving ability based on culture by suggesting them the unexpected situation, which is related to daily life as well. This research constructed narrative-based instructional model based on Egan's story form framework as instruction strategy. For example, elementary school's social studies(history) subject class was planned; in the same way, science subject class is constructed of narrative-based discovery learning model. To improve pre-existing teacher's one-way communication, which is the problem of instruction method, teacher should use divergent questions, reflect which type among four views he or she used when interacting with students, and utilize that reflection to future instruction plan. In social studies subject, this research designed instruction applying cooperative learning model which can draw intersubjective interaction between teachers and students, and between students and students. In this type of instruction, I-R-F interaction between teacher and students can actively happen. Next, this paper suggested that instruction and assessment should be executed in four perspectives. First, in social and cultural context, process-based performance assessment should be increased. Second, in narrative-based instruction, assessment should be developed in a practical context by reflecting the problem situation in daily life. Assessment using narrative enables for the teacher to grasp which verbal interaction students with narrative ability share and how they participate in culture with narrative discourse. Third, mutual feedback-based assessment is one which evaluates interaction among learners who share meaning and become intersubjective. In case of the procedure of verbal interaction during the instruction, both teacher and classmate can evaluate by using the feedback. By providing students with feedback by active interaction, teacher can grasp student's performance in activity and support students' meaning making procedure. Fourth, it can evaluate students' narrative competency. Through student's class diary, teacher can evaluate students' improvement in class per an hour, per a week, per a month, and per a semester. By analyzing pre-existing instruction methods and exploring instruction direction in the whole context based on Bruner's folk pedagogy's basic views, four models about learner's mind, and narrative thinking, this paper suggested idea about instruction method's innovation in the stage of instruction contents, instructional strategy, and instruction assessment. In the school context, it is necessary to improve instruction and method in a way of meaning making through verbal interaction in culture by proving intersubjectivity, which understands teacher and students' both mind.

    • Teachers’ beliefs and pedagogy on economic justice education

This study examined the relationship between social studies teachers’ beliefs about economic justice education and their pedagogy on economic justice. Prior to the actual empirical research, I discussed what I have called the ‘mainstream Subject-oriented approach’ to economic justice and the alternative ‘Others-oriented approach’ to construct a theoretical framework through which the study could explore teachers’ beliefs and pedagogy. In doing so, this study suggested an economic justice education to respond to the vocation of the Others, and citizenship education to attend to the alterity of the Others. To determine the relationship between teachers’ beliefs and pedagogy, an ‘explanatory-convergent’ design of mixed methods research was employed. The first stage of quantitative research identified six clusters based on cluster analysis, and the analysis of variance showed that social studies teachers’ beliefs on economic justice education differ according to the clusters. For the second stage of qualitative research, three particular clusters were selected: an Average-group, a Subject-oriented group, and an Others-oriented group. Three teachers (one from each cluster) were sampled from the three clusters to represent each, and a multiple case study was conducted with them. The qualitative examination of three teachers’ worlds revealed diverse but complicated relationships between beliefs and pedagogy. However, with all the quantitative and qualitative explorations and the detailed research findings, I could not convince myself that the findings fully explored the research question, and I had to return to square one to address the question of what the deeper relationship between teachers’ beliefs and pedagogy is. This question pushed me towards an ontological exploration. Deleuzian ontology was an essential lens to re-interpret the collected data. From the Deleuzian perspective, teaching is an event, an event of surge. Potential changes which have been unnoticed suddenly soar up into the classroom. This surge is the actualization of what was subsisting/insisting at the level of virtuality. As we understand the ontology of teaching as an aleatory point, empty place, singularity, and an event of surge, we can eventually reimagine the relationship between teachers’ beliefs and pedagogy as ‘event of surge.’ As teachings arise into the classroom, a teacher’s beliefs also surge into his/her teaching. In the springing up events of teachings, beliefs reveal and expose themselves tearing off the ontological rigidity. This ontological understanding of teachers’ beliefs and pedagogy presented the significance of teachers’ beliefs: they keep pedagogy active and alive. The moment teachers’ beliefs stop moving around and being alive, pedagogy remains virtual and fossilized. The importance of teachers’ beliefs in pedagogy and the significance of an ‘event of surge’ is that without it, pedagogy is no better than dead. But the empty place cannot remain ‘empty’ for long. As Levinas (1969) reminds us, the metaphysical desire for the Other awakened by the face of the other should be situated in the aleatory points and empty places that will move around the structure. The reconciliation of soaring up events of teachers’ beliefs and pedagogy with Others-oriented approach to economic justice education occurs here. The pedagogy to respond to the vocation of the others, and to attend to the alterity of the Others, can gain a life when the beings and beliefs of teachers soar up and permeate the classroom, and thereby affect students, and therefore hopefully, change the world.

    • Examining Principals' Perceptions of Their Support and Facilitation of Teachers' Implementation of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy to Help Black Male Students in English Language Arts

The academic outcomes of Black male students, specifically as it relates to English Language Arts, have been a cause for concern for quite some time. Data consistently shows that Black male’ performance lags behind the performance of their White counterparts. Proponents of culturally relevant pedagogy, like Ladson-Billings, believed it is an effective practice to address the failings of an education system that historically has underserved culturally diverse students. This qualitative study explored the perceptions of New York City Department of Education principals relating to their facilitation and support of teacher implementation of culturally relevant pedagogy to help Black males in English Language Arts. This research focused on the school leaders’ facilitation of culturally relevant pedagogy as described by the culturally relevant pedagogy framework. It also examined the extent to which principals received professional development on culturally relevant pedagogy from their supervisors and how the principals engaged their teachers in professional development relative to culturally relevant pedagogy. This grounded theory study targeted New York City Department of Education high school principals employed within schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Twelve randomly selected principals responded to 14 semi-structured interview questions. An interview protocol was used and all interviewees were advised that they could withdraw from the study at any time. The researcher followed all recommended Institutional Review Board protocols, which were used consistently with all the participants. The findings indicate that the principals did not have a definition of culturally relevant pedagogy that matches Ladson-Billings’s framework, and most of them did not foster a shared definition of culturally relevant pedagogy. In addition, all of the principals, except one, were not receiving any professional development focused on culturally relevant pedagogy. More than half of the participants had attempted to provide professional development on culturally relevant pedagogy to their teachers, but the district’s prioritized professional development focused on improving test results. Finally, all of the principals were not facilitating culturally relevant pedagogy in any way or in the manner described by the culturally relevant pedagogy framework. The researcher concludes the following: (a) the participants were not familiar enough with culturally relevant pedagogy to expertly facilitate it, (b) the district-level school leaders had not prioritized and mandated culturally relevant pedagogy, (c) the principals perceived that culturally relevant pedagogy would be beneficial to their Black male students, and (f) New York State English Language Arts data were limited.

Percussion instruments are written in history as the oldest form of instrument and exists as an indispensable element in almost all music. As music and technology developed, percussion instruments also transformed from its ancient form of percussive bones to modern drum kit, and then further to electronic drum set with reduced noise designed to be played even in homes. Nowadays, efforts are being made to emphasize drums’ presence and accessibility through mass media. As people start to recognize drum beats in familiar songs or see images of drummers and celebrities playing drums in the media, demand for drum lessons is rising. To meet this demand, drum lesson studios, music academies, leisure centers and school clubs are offering programs and drum education industry is growing in size. However, there are a few problems that are commonly found in drum lessons. Standardized curriculum is nonexistent and each institution has different courses of learning which makes it difficult for students to switch institutions. Also, rather than offering sufficient opportunities to apply the techniques learned, classes invest more time in providing information and instructions. This in turn reduces demand for drum lessons and damages people’s perception of drums. This journal intends to address such problems with a new pedagogy using flipped learning(from now on referred to as ‘flipped learning drum pedagogy’) consisting of 10-week curriculum and four learning objectives. The flipped learning drum pedagogy was constructed by combining flipped classroom―a pedagogy which has been gaining influence in Korea―with six cognitive levels of B.Bloom’s taxonomy. To apply this pedagogy in real life, 50 students have been sampled across various age groups based on whether they had pervious experience in receiving drum lesson and all 50 students successfully completed the curriculum. Afterwards a survey was conducted with questions assessing the pedagogy’s use of pre-class learning―the main trait of flipped learning drum pedagogy—and four learning objectives as well as questions comparing the flipped learning drum pedagogy to education offered by other institutions. Participants were also asked to provide their views on advantages and disadvantages of the flipped learning drum pedagogy. According to the survey, all students except for 2%(1 person) replied they would like to take more lessons and the students who had taken drum classes in other institutions all responded that the new pedagogy had positive effects on their learning. Students who learned how to play drums for the first time also gave highly positive responses to learning through the new pedagogy. The result of the study shows that as the society and the generations change, drum pedagogy also requires transformation. This study and the newly developed flipped learning drum pedagogy aims to provide new directions to drum pedagogy and contribute to future studies.

    • Multilingual Multiliteracies Pedagogy in Two-Way Immersion Classrooms: Towards Collaborative (Trans)Languaging Space

This ethnographic case study explores how implementing multilingual multiliteracies pedagogy can (re)structure classroom language space and impact the teaching and learning practices of teachers and students in K-2 Spanish/English two-way immersion classrooms. As linguistic and cultural diversity is becoming ever more important in schools as a result of globalization, increase in cross-border connections, and increased student mobility, bi/multilingualism continues to gain ground. Despite these growingly documented bi/multilingual practices, many educational spaces continue to be dominated by monolingual ideologies and practices (Piccardo, 2018; Lin, 2020). Strict language separation policies in two-way immersion programs have come into question by scholars as it reflects ideologies of double monolingualism (Jorgensen, 2008) and fail to recognize the sociolinguistic realities of bilingual students (Heller, 1995; Garcia & Lin, 2017). In response to the need to develop multilingual spaces where the dynamic nature of bilingualism can be recognized, this dissertation study addresses the potential and possibility of incorporating multilingual multiliteracies pedagogy to create and foster a flexible educational space in a two-way immersion context that affirms and leverages bi/multilingual students’ full linguistic and cultural repertoires as resources in learning. This research focused on the following research questions: (1) What does multilingual multiliteracies pedagogy informed by a critical multilingual language awareness (CMLA) framework look like in two-way immersion classrooms? How can multilingual multiliteracies projects impact classroom languaging and students’ do(ing) being bilingual? (2) How do educators in two-way immersion classrooms structure classroom language space while implementing multilingual multiliteracies pedagogy? How do educators make sense of their own and students’ language practices through their engagement in multilingual multiliteracies projects? Teachers and students engaged in multilingual multiliteracies pedagogy project over two years that included multilingual multimodal activities and collaborative bookmaking. Critical discourse analysis and thematic analysis of the classroom data reveal how teachers exercised agency and used translanguaging pedagogy and multiliteracies pedagogy to create an inclusive learning space, and how these facilitated students’ language learning. Additionally, the case findings point to how engaging in a multilingual multiliteracy pedagogy project can create opportunities for students to develop critical multilingual language awareness and positive bi/multilingual identity. This study provides theoretical, methodological, and pedagogical insights that will help researchers and practitioners to create more equitable and integrated learning spaces for all learners in two-way immersion contexts.

    • Teaching with Translanguaging as a Critical Literacy Pedagogy in Elementary Dual-Language Immersion Education

Donley, Kevin Gerard ProQuest Dissertations & Theses University of Oreg 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

Translanguaging is a theory and pedagogy of language that understands multilingualism to be an inherently fluid, flexible, and dynamic practice (Garcia, 2009). As a pedagogy, a translanguaging stance aims to empower multilingual learners to draw on the entirety of their communicative repertoires to disrupt and transform classroom language borders and what counts as academic language (Otheguy, Garcia & Reid, 2015). In elementary dual-language immersion (DLI) contexts, where bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism are developed in two languages of instruction, the purpose of translanguaging pedagogy should be both biliteracy development and social transformation. Therefore, this study explores how teachers engage translanguaging for biliteracy and social transformation in elementary DLI contexts. There are two purposes that frame this research: to gain a global understanding of the purposes and tensions of a strong translanguaging stance, and to highlight local examples of how elementary DLI teachers think, plan, and teach with translanguaging as a critical literacy pedagogy. It is guided by the following research questions: a) What are the purposes and tensions of a strong translanguaging stance for elementary DLI teachers?b) How do elementary DLI teachers negotiate these tensions to design critical translanguaging literacy lessons? c)How do elementary DLI teachers critically and creatively shift their translanguaging pedagogy while teaching such lessons? Methodologically, this study is framed and operationalized via Garcia, Johnson, and Seltzer’s (2017) translanguaging pedagogy framework of Stance/Design/Shifts. It draws on semi-structured interviews with elementary DLI teachers to explore the global purposes and tensions of a strong translanguaging stance. It further draws on multiple case studies, including interviews, lesson plans, and classroom observations, to analyze local examples of teachers’ stances, designs, and shifts in practice. It concludes that, globally, teachers engage translanguaging pedagogy for the purposes of teaching for more than biliteracy/biculturalism, teaching as a co-learner, and teaching to disrupt raciolinguistic ideologies while navigating tensions related to resisting English hegemony, negotiating weak and strong translanguaging, and valuing teacher expertise. It further offers evidence of how teachers locally engage these purposes and tensions to teach with translanguaging as a critical literacy pedagogy.

    • (A) qualitative investigation of critical pedagogy implementation in a Korean university English course

      RANK : 2926

The present study is a qualitative study which attempts to illustrate a case in which critical pedagogy was implemented in an English as a foreign language (EFL) context through an intermediate English course at a Korean university. Three components of critical pedagogy—negotiated syllabus, dialogue, and action orientation—as suggested by Crookes (2013), was applied to the course. The learners selected topics for critical dialogue, watched a movie, read newspaper and weekly journal articles all selected by themselves and participated in classroom dialogue. The students, furthermore, made an effort to provide solutions or action plans for the issues that arose from the topics or from the classroom discussions. The data analyzed in the present study includes students’ surveys, interviews with students, students’ presentation materials, audio recordings of classroom discussions, students’ essays, and the instructor/researcher’s field notes. Utilizing these data, the study identifies how critical pedagogy was prepared, processed and manifested according to Crookes’s three components. Results show that the students were able to proactively participate in syllabus negotiation, engage in renegotiation, participate in class critical dialogue by employing a variety of critical thinking skills, and present the possibilities of bringing about changes in their thoughts and actions. Contrary to the pervasive belief that Korean students are passive in the classroom, the students in the current study actively voiced their opinions, made attempts to participate in class dialogue, and accepted and reported transformations in their thoughts and behaviors. The study suggests that by implementing the three components—negotiated syllabus, dialogue, and action orientation—critical pedagogy in the EFL classroom can be promoted to enhance the learning of English. Lastly, some challenges in adopting classroom critical dialogue in EFL contexts and action orientation are discussed and possible implications are provided.
