본 연구는 학습자의 원활한 의사소통 능력 신장과 발화 자신감 도모를 위해 기존의 표준발음 중심 교육에서 벗어나 현실 언어생활에서 널리 쓰이는 비표준적 통용 발음의 교육 필요성을 강조하며, 통용 발음 교육 전후의 학습자 발화를 녹음하고 발화의 자연성을 평가하는 실험을 실시하여 통용 발음이 학습자의 발화를 자연스럽게 만드는 데 효과가 있다는 것을 밝혔다. This study emphasizes the necessity of teaching ‘non-standard commonly used pronunciation’ widely utilized in daily life to enhance Korean language learners' communicative competence and speech naturalness, and aims to verify its effectiveness. To this end, non-standard pronunciation was categorized into three distinct tiers: actual pronunciation, commonly used pronunciation, and dialectal pronunciation. Subsequently, the speech naturalness of 34 advanced Korean learners was evaluated before and after instruction in using commonly used pronunciation. The results demonstrated a significant increase in naturalness scores across all speech units following the instruction: dialogue (7.7 to 9.2), sentence (7.0 to 8.7), and vocabulary (8.1 to 8.9). By item, word-initial fortition, syllable contraction, and /ㅓ/ vowel raising contributed substantially to enhancing speech naturalness. In contrast, certain vowel variations and final consonant weakening exhibited stagnant or slightly lower scores. These findings confirm the need for a selective instructional approach rather than teaching all commonly used pronunciations indiscriminately: items with verified effectiveness should be taught for ‘production purposes’ to encourage active speech, whereas other items should be differentiated for ‘comprehension purposes.’

다문화 시대의 한국어 의사소통 - 발음 변이에 대한 용인성을 중심으로 -

Korea is faced with the process of rapidly transitioning into a multi-cultural society. Hence, a new type of communication has appeared in the context of everyday language use. Korean used by people who are not native speakers is increasing, along with many government policies for developing a multi-cultural society. Communication problems have arisen as the small number of non-native Korean users attempt to adapt to the language of the majority. In this article, I look at the problem of communication and pronunciation. As shown in the example of the English, the social evaluation of pronunciation, rather than the pronunciation itself, can become the major factor in a communication situation. Therefore, I think that there is a need to enhance the acceptability of non-standard pronunciation of Korean, and to prepare policies to help increase the total amount of communication between individuals. 한국 사회는 급격한 다문화 사회로의 이행 과정에 놓여 있다. 한국어 모어 화자가 아닌 사람들이 사용하는 한국어를 일상적 의사소통 상황에서 많이 접하게 되는 새로운 의사소통 상황이 발생하였고, 다문화 사회에 대비하기 위한 여러 가지 정책이 시행되고 있다. 다문화 사회의 의사소통 문제는 다수의 언어인 한국어에 대한 소수 비모어 한국어 사용자의 적응 과정이라고 볼 수 있다. 이 글에서는 발음과 의사소통 문제를 살펴보았는데 영어의 예에서 보듯 발음 자체보다는 발음에 대한 사회적 평가가 의사소통 상황에 더 큰 영향을 준다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 한국어 발음에 대해서도 비표준적 발음에 대한 용인성을 높여서 의사소통의 총량을 증대시키는 방향으로 정책을 마련할 필요가 있다고 본다.

이 연구에서는 한국어 TTS 시스템의 외래어 발음 처리 현황을 점검하여, 그것의 문제점을 지적하고, 그에 대한 개선안을 국어학적 관점에서 모색하였다. 우선, 한국어 TTS 시스템의 발음 처리와 관련이 있는 선행 연구를 개관하고 특히 외래어 발음 처리에서 문제가 될 수 있는 항목을 추출하였다. 그 결과 어두경음화, /ㄴㄹ/ 연쇄의 유음화와 비음화, 모음의 발음 등이 문제 항목으로 선정되었다. 이에 이 연구에서는 각 항목에 관한 사례를 네이버와 구글의 TTS 시스템에 입력하여 발음 처리 현황을 살피고, 문제가 되는 항목에 대해 발음 처리 개선을 위한 방안을 제시하였다. 이러한 연구는 표준 발음이 정해져 있지 않은 외래어를 TTS 시스템이 처리할 때 참고할 수 있는 발음 처리 매뉴얼을 제공할 수 있다는 데 의미가 있다. 또한, 이런 논의는 현재까지 표준 발음의 외부 영역으로 놓여 있는 한국어 외래어의 표준 발음을 제정하는 데 참고가 될 것으로 기대한다. This study investigated whether the pronunciation of loanwords is well produced in the Korean TTS system, drew up its problems, and proposed ways to improve the problem from a Korean linguistics perspective. First, previous studies related to pronunciation processing of the Korean TTS system were reviewed, and items that could be problematic in the pronunciation processing of loanwords were extracted. As a result, word-initial tensification, lateralization and nasalization of /n-l(ㄴ-ㄹ)/ sequence, and vowel pronunciation were selected as problem items. Therefore, in this study, examples of each item were entered into the TTS system of Naver Papago and Google Translate to examine the pronunciation processing status, and a plan to improve pronunciation processing for the problematic item from the perspective of the Korean language was proposed. This study is meaningful in that it can provide a pronunciation processing manual that can be referred to when the TTS system processes loanwords for which the standard pronunciation is not determined. In addition, this discussion is expected to serve as a reference for establishing the standard pronunciation of Korean loanwords that have been placed as an external area of standard pronunciation until now.
