A sense of alienation has appeared in modern society as a universal phenomenon. Modern excessive materialism and mechanical civilization have not made man experience himself as the center of his world and the creator of his own acts. O'Neill was much interested in this matter, which was treated. on his plays. This subject among the important themes expressed in O'Neill's plays is the conflict between the reality and dream of life. It is, namely, man's loss of the true self between reality and dream. In this point, O'Neill tries to confront the reality of life in Long Day's Journey into Night - his autobiographical work O'Neill said this work a play of old sorrow, written in tears and blood in his dedication of Long Day's Journey into Night to Carlotta. This play shows the new posture of compassion and understanding which leads toward reconciliation with the unseen forces, which had led him to bewilderment and pain in the early plays. In the first place in Long Day's Journey into Night, O'Neill endowed four persons with tragic characters resulted from the sense of alienation. Throughout his work, the character are depicted as an isolated and lonely being. Especially Mary, one of the Tyrones, felt the loss of a sense of belonging and isolation for homelessness. Modern critics insist it should be the American tragedy, which means the rootlessness of modern man. That is the root of the external and internal alienation of the Tyrones, too. But she, in the end, chooses the retrogressive solution of morphine addiction. Therefore she gives up her life. While, Men of the Tyrones get over the pain from the isolation and the loss of self through the progressive solution of dialogue. O'Neill suggests some possibilities to overcome the consciousness of alienation through Edmund in it. Although Mary withdraws herself from the rest of her family, they shows that man can be alive in all desperate situation by his own humanism and strong kinship. It is through his understanding, his compassion, and his pity that Edmund can transcend the tragic situation with his family. It is certain that their lack of understanding among the members of the family was responsible for their isolated and uncommunicative situation. Though a consciousness of alienation may seem to be inevitable in every human existence, he was capable of overcoming it with his own love and his strong kinship. I believe he is great, for he never abandon himself in spite of any desperate and hopeless situation, and he can eventually come to a hopeful life. Namely, As Edmund confronts the reality, he leads to his life 'Journey beyond night' toward dawn from 'Journey into night' toward death.

      • 애증의 문제 : Long day's journey into night을 중심으로

Eugene O'Neill wrote a tragedy, Long Day's Journey Into Night with the intention of forgetting and erasing his unhappy family life. He had too much difficulty in and was not relieved of the mental and physical sufferings by his miserable family life and the strife among family members. Due to this unhappy situation, he did not also behave himself well in his home and in society. The emotions of alienation and love and hatred of his family members (his father was a miser and his mother a drug addict) caused him to create the darma. In Long Day's Journey Into Night, O'Neill expressed the reconciliation and harmony with his family members as well as the conflicts from the disharmony among them. Focusing on and expressing basically his small family life, O'Neill sought to find where people had to proceed in their wasteful realities. By doing so, O'Neill enhanced the tragedy. Indeed, Long Day's Journey Into Night is a masterpiece that contains and expresses profoundly the emotion of Love and Hatred from his real life and sublimates these emotion in positive perspectives.

      • O'Neill의 悲劇에 관한 硏究 : Long Day's Journey into Night와 A Moon for the Misbegotten을 중심으로 하여

Eugene O'Neill was the greatest playwright in the America of the 1920's but his life was also like a tragic drama. He keenly quested after man psychie as well as man's agony by reflecting his own image in almost all his works. In his late plays, representative autobiographical works are Long Day's Journey into Night and A Moon for the Misbegotten. These plays are overly descriptive of himself and his domestic tragedies. The aim of this thesis is to analyse O'Neill's tragedies, and through them O'Neill, using the Tyrones and how they, in both of his major works, overcome their own personal agony. The Tyrones' tragedy in Long Day's Journey into Night and A Moon for the Misbegotten starts from their agony that occurrenced on account of the influences of the environment and fate. The Tyrones are sunk in the depths of despair due to their alienation from society beeing Irish Immigrants, the rupture and isolation of the individual, guilt and loss; discord and spiritual loss are shown by way of Edmund and Jamie's Oedipus Complex. Still, the important thing is that they are by no means only tragic because , even if the action is dark, O'Neill makes them go on with their tragic struggle by giving them the characteristic powers of Dionysus and thus they can't quit life. O'Neill's 'hopless hope' and 'survival' philosophy helped him to achive world wide fame. This philosophy was merely a way to overcome an agony that on the surface, appears to be darkness, constant quarreling and escapism into a state of illusions moreover, O'Neill enlarges his vision of the blessing by using man's sacrifice and love, amibilities and forgiveness through which he creates Josie who has all of the attributes of women and the Earth Mother and thus he gives his family and himself consulation and peace.

For the systematic structural analysis of O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night, I have tried to analyse the structural patterns of Scene, Act, Characters and four major pairs of imagery. At scene lebel, the patterns based on twelve episodes provide a foundation for the almost complete analysis of the play. It reveals the way in which the play is composed of a series of dramatic episodes and five phases of dialogue. At act level, the pattern not only deals with the dominant thread of the play-Mary's addiction-but also embraces the entire play, again demonstrating the tightness and unity of the play's organizational structure. Act lebel pattern also shows that the play keeps three unities and good plot organization. For the deeper analysis of the characters in the play, I've studied the Tyrones' background and their influence on Edmund, Jamie and one another. This analysis tells us that the tragedy of the play was chiefly caused by the very different background of the Tyrones. A survey of the play's images reveals four major images based on opposition-day and night, sunshine and fog, sobriety and drugs (or alcohol) and future and past. This sense of opposition contained in the image pairs is paralleled to the opposition and conflict expressed in the argumentative mode of the play. In short, these image pairs help the play progress from hope to despair. This play is O'Neill's autobiographical work, this play will be very helpful. Because in his relation with his parents and one sibling is to be found the fountain head of his passion and power, as well as much of subject matter.

Eugene Gladstone O'Neill(1888-1953) was one of the greatest playwrights in American history. Through his experimental and emotionally probing dramas, he addressed the difficulties of human society with a deep psychological complexity. In Long Day's Journey into Night, widely regarded as his last and greatest true masterpiece, Eugene O'Neill gambles with his skill as an objective playwright by drawing potentially explosive material from his own life. Long Day's Journey into Night is describing the painful conflicts among the four members of the Tyrone family in the family. In this work deals with the serious personal issues of four family members as they unsuccessfully grapple with their individual failings and collective deterioration. Although external agents have introduced corruption into the Tyrone family, O'Neill uses his characters to show that withholding mutual support and efforts to understand one another in times of crisis brings sorrow and further familial decay. Although they sincerely love each other, the characters in O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night isolate themselves from each other and the reality of their problems, and consequently they are unable to counter the corrupting influence of their personal demons. In this play of old sorrow, written in tears and blood, O'Neill surely came to understand his own family better, and by basing the play on his own life, O'Neill ensures that the story does not end with the fall of the curtain, and there is hope that the long night will not last forever.

      • Eugene O´Neil의 가족극에 나타난 갈등과 극복 : Desire under the Elms와 Long Day's Journey Into Night을 중심으로

        RANK : 236429

O'Neill has long been a subject of respect by producing a unique artistic line of American plays. His plays contain so various and many problems that we must examine not only his own explanations for his intentions accompanying the problems of interpretation in his plays but also new considerations based on his biography in many aspects. The purpose of this thesis is to study the tragic vision revealed in O'Neill's plays, focusing on father-son relationship in Desire Under the Elms, and Long Days Journey Into Night. O'Neill tried to seize this tragic situation in a family and thought that the reconciliation of a family can come from the self knowledge of each other. Eugene home life was painful: His father was domineering, his mother a morphin addict, his brother on alcoholic. Without doubt, O'Neill was deeply influenced by his family. In the two plays the conflict between father and son is depicted as derived from the conflict between materialism and will. In the two plays such as Eben Cabot and Edmund Tyrone are all characterized as man of feeling and father all as man of strong will. In Desire Under the Elms, they come to be separated mutually because of their egoistic possessiveness for the farm. In the play, Eben and Abbie break out of their mutual individuation by giving up their former possessiveness. In Long Day's Journey Into Night the author deals with the parent-child conflict which not only begins but also ends in the continuous suffering and agony of the characters such as Tyrone, Mary, Jamie and Edmund. Especially Mary's complete immersion into addiction forms the helpless isolation between her and the others. This isolation makes the other's struggles meaningless, even though they have endeavoured to keep their family's kinship. Here, we can feel the pessimistic sense. These characters blame and counter blame each other for being the author of his or her failure in life. O'Neill's protagonist is the life's meaning, hope and the most valuable thing because he believes 'hope in hopelessness' that reveals life in a vivid and exciting experience worth enduring the pain until the true end even though man is bound in a tragic fate. In this point we can find the tragic sense in O'Neill's Tragedies.

Most studies of drama in Korea have been limited to close looks at the chracters involved without regard to the whole effect o f the drama. But it is considered that the approach to drama has to take into account the whole effect including acting, directing, sound, lighting, scenery, custumes, properties, and the whole theatrical space. The purpose of this thesis is to study three aspects of symbols in O'Neill's Long Day's Jouney into Night and analyze various symbols in relation to the subject in the following order. A. Symbols in setting. B. Symbols in action. C. Symbols in words. Long Day's Jouney into Night is a record of the conflict of the illusion o f happy past and the reality o f bitter present of Mr.and Mrs. Tyron-that of their family-symbolically that of the whole country of Western industrial society. In their feeling of spiritual homelessness, the Tyrones recognized that they share the common source of their tragedy. In fact, man has lost the self and his spiritual home in modern industrial society. It can be said that O'Neill represent in this play the vision of human skinship which is the great legacy of his last plays. The characters reject the retreat from life. This play seems to express primarily human islation, mostly through Mary, and to show the way how human being can recover his lost soul through mutural understanding and love.

      • Eugene O'Neill의 Long Day's Journey into Night

(Long Day's Journey into Night)의 극적 상징들을 통하여 주인공들의 현실 도피의 모습을 분석하는 데 있다.

I have been accused of unmitigated gloom. Is this pessimistic view of life? I do not think so. There is a skin deep optimism and another higher optimism, not skin deep, which is usually confounded with pessimism. To me, the tragic alone has that significant beauty which is truth. It is the meaning of life and the hope. ··· a man in his love choice, is strongly temped to win the woman who best corresponds to his own unconscious femininity - a woman, in short, who can unhesitantly receive the projection of his soul.
