Vol.23 No.1

While AI offers benefits to education and society, it also presents ethical and social challenges such as information bias, algorithmic opacity, and privacy infringement. Consequently, there is a growing demand for students to cultivate digital citizenship and unification citizenship beyond mere technical proficiency. Particularly within the unique context of the division of the Korean Peninsula, unification education must prioritize integrating democratic and global citizenship values to peacefully navigate the division and foster practical competencies for unification preparation. This study proposes an education model that integrates digital literacy, AI literacy, digital citizenship, and unification citizenship, aiming to foster students’ competencies as unification and global citizens. AI-based education enables critical thinking about misinformation, algorithmic bias, and hate speech, beyond simple information access. Furthermore, it contributes to cultivating citizens who seek inter-Korean communication and coexistence within digital spaces while practicing community responsibility and the value of peace. To this end, this study proposes unification education strategies suitable for the AI era by combining educational theories and instructional models. Specifically, this study examines the following three research questions: First, what are the complementary linkages between UNESCO’s AI competency framework (including AI literacy) and the goals of unification education? Second, how can the concept of unification citizenship be theoretically expanded and reconstructed when incorporating digital literacy and digital citizenship? Third, what are the specific educational strategies and practical teaching models for integrally fostering digital citizenship and unification citizenship in the AI era?

Vol.30 No.2

Purpose: AI and big data have transformed customer behaviors and marketing strategies, with businesses using customer data for personalized services that improve efficiency and reduce workload. For customers, AI enhances convenience by automating tasks. Post-COVID, AI adoption accelerated, with 42% of businesses using chatbots that leverage natural language processing and machine learning. In banking, 51.4% of representatives acknowledge chatbots’ effectiveness, while retail implementation has increased 31% since 2021, now reaching 73% of global companies. Current research limitations include focus on functional rather than intelligent features, limited empirical research on personalization and psychological responses, insufficient research on empathy’s influence, minimal privacy concern research, and poor understanding of interaction factors. This study examines chatbot personalization’s impact on perceived empathy, how empathy affects customer citizenship behavior, and privacy concerns’ moderating effect. The research draws on CASA theory, AI Job Replacement Theory, AI Device Use Adoption model, and Information Boundary Theory. Based on this theoretical background, the study developed the following hypotheses: [H1] Perceived personalization of AI chatbot services will increase customer citizenship behavior. [H2] Perceived empathy will mediate the effect of perceived personalization of AI chatbot services on customer citizenship behavior. [H3] Privacy concerns will moderate the mediating pathway where perceived personalization of AI chatbot services affects customer citizenship behavior through perceived empathy. Research design, data and methodology: This study surveyed Korean adults who had used AI chatbots, following Hair et al.’s (2010) guidelines recommending 5–15 responses per observed variable for structural equation modeling. With 14 variables, they targeted 140–210 responses. The online survey ran February 1–15, 2024, through a domestic panel agency, screening for those who had used AI chatbot customer service within the past year. From 234 participants, 24 were excluded for short response times or irrelevant answers, leaving 210 respondents. The sample was 64% male with an average age of 32.1 years, distributed across age groups: 30s (39%), 20s (31%), 40s (23%), and 50s (7%). For chatbot service frequency, 41.1% reported “less than 10 times,” 21.9% “20+ times,” 19.4% “less than 5 times,” 10.6% “less than 15 times,” and 7.0% “less than 20 times.” With 81.6% having used chatbots at least 5 times, the sample confirmed their widespread use. Measurement items used a 5-point scale, with perceived personalization measured by four items, perceived empathy by three items, customer citizenship behavior by four items, and privacy concerns by three items. Results: Using Hayes’ PROCESS MACRO Model 4, the total effect of perceived personalization on perceived empathy was significant (b=0.671, p<0.001), supporting Hypothesis 1. Bootstrapping analysis (n=1,000) showed a significant indirect effect of perceived empathy (0.273, 95% CI=[0.186, 0.371]) and significant direct effect (95% CI=[0.282, 0.514]), confirming perceived empathy partially mediates the influence of perceived personalization on customer citizenship behavior, supporting Hypothesis 2 (show <Table 1>). To verify whether privacy concerns moderate the indirect effect of perceived personalization of AI chatbot services on customer citizenship behavior through perceived empathy, Hayes' PROCESS MACRO Model 7 was used. The analysis showed a statistically significant interaction effect between perceived personalization and privacy concerns on perceived empathy (b=–0.160, p<0.001). This confirms that the influence of perceived personalization on perceived empathy varies depending on the level of privacy concerns (see <Table 2>). A conditional effect analysis examined the moderating effect of privacy concerns, which were classi...

Vol.0 No.67

최근까지 인공지능에 대한 윤리인증에서 중요한 기준으로 제시되고 있는 것을 살펴보면, 책임성(Responsibility/Accountability), 투명성(Transparency), 최소편향성(Minimum Algorithmic Bias) 이 있지만, 이외에도 제어 가능성(Controllability), 안전성(Safety), 보안성(Security), 인권존중(Respect for Human Right), 공동선(Common Good)을 들 -수 있다. AI citizenship education, unlike digital citizenship education, requires three competencies. First, the ability to manage systems and operations so that human dignity and autonomy are respected under AI systems is emphasized in future societies. Second, in order to prevent the harm that AI systems can cause to humans in advance, and afterwards to hold and realize the responsibility for the development, production, management, and use of such AI systems, the ability to establish appropriate procedures and standards to systematically guarantee the transparency or explainability of AI systems is needed. Finally, the emphasis is on the ability of fairness to address the problems of bias and the inequality that can arise from the recent bias of big data. Factors that have been suggested as important criteria in ethics certification for AI until recently are Responsibility / Accoutability, Transparency and Minimum Algorithmic Bias. In addition, controllability, safety, security, respect for human rights, and common good are emphasized in the ethical guidelines. This should be added as an important part of AI citizenship. As these issues are now emphasized in Europe's reliable AI, China's responsible AI as well as in explainable AI, the rights and responsibilities that can be derived from these factors should be included in AI citizenship education.

Vol.3 No.2

This study aims to develop a core competency framework for AI digital citizenship from a digital inclusion perspective and to provide implications for supporting diverse learners. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to define AI digital citizenship and its core competency domains, followed by two rounds of Delphi surveys to validate and refine the framework. As a result, the core competencies of AI digital citizenship were organized into three overarching domains—Foundational Understanding, Practice and Collaboration, and Reflection and Growth—each comprising two core competencies. The Foundational Understanding domain includes competencies in data understanding and utilization as well as AI digital literacy. The Practice and Collaboration domain encompasses competencies related to AI-enabled collaboration and communication, along with ethical, safe, responsible, and trustworthy use of AI. The Reflection and Growth domain consists of competencies in creating public and social value through AI and in continuous learning and growth in AI-driven digital environments. The proposed framework is significant in that it systematically conceptualizes AI digital citizenship competencies through a cyclical structure of understanding, practice, and reflection from a digital inclusion perspective, thereby enabling the expansion of civic competencies in AI-mediated environments. The framework is expected to serve as a foundational reference for public education systems, educational institutions, policymakers, and other stakeholders engaged in digital inclusion education, supporting the design of strategies and practical approaches for developing AI digital citizenship competencies

Vol.64 No.3

This study explores the need to reconceptualize citizenship education in the AI era, where the traditional notion of global citizenship alone is insufficient to address emerging challenges. While prior research has typically treated digital citizenship as a supplementary dimension of global citizenship, the current technological and social transformations call for their fundamental fusion. Drawing on an analysis of integration discourses in existing studies, this research identifies the direction of such fusion and redefines the concept of AI-era digital global citizenship based on the shared premise of human-centeredness. The study proposes four core principles and six key elements, which extend beyond conventional values and behaviors by incorporating AI ethics, data justice, critical technology understanding, empathy, and solidarity. These findings highlight the necessity of a paradigm shift in social studies citizenship education—from emphasizing technical skills toward fostering proactive and ethical agency in AI-driven societies. Moreover, the study suggests concrete strategies for teacher education, curriculum development, and classroom practice that reflect this integrative approach, thereby offering pathways to cultivate holistic global citizenship in the digital age.

Vol.61 No.2

The purpose of this study was to identify the phenomenon, meaning, and cause of AI bias in the digital network era to derive the qualities of a citizen in preparation for the AI era. AI, deeply embedded in the lives of citizens, is rapidly spreading in the digital network society. The causes of AI bias are the result of data bias as intrinsic and extrinsic attributions such as algorithms. This can be said to be inevitable, like human bias. But the continuous use of certain AI services can solidify the bias of citizens. The qualifications of citizens to prepare for such AI bias are as follow. First, education to cultivate flexible bias is necessary. If the bias of AI is inevitable, citizens who use AI need must use AI reflectively rather than being immersed in AI. For this, selfregulation- based metacognitive ability to think and act critically about one’s thinking and judgment is required. The self-regulation-based metacognitive ability can contribute to a flexible bias, that can weaken the bias of citizens by AI and make rational decisions by linking situation-related information and knowledge. Second, as an AI consumer, users must be aware of the rights of citizens. AI is based on respect for the fundamental rights of citizens in data processing and interpretation. Then, it is essential to critically evaluate if the interpretation and decision of AI meets the basic rights of citizens. Citizens’ right to know about AI’s learning algorithms and learning data is the fulfillment of accountability for developers. If so, citizens have the right to demand accountability from AI developers. Third, there is a need for citizen literacy in understanding and using AI. Understanding AI is a civic quality as a user who responds to the developer’s accountability. Understanding AI algorithms and data is the basis for citizens to critically understand if AI is on the same track as citizens’ pursuit of basic rights. In terms of the desirable use of AI, future citizens must independently perform rational interpretations and decisions by using various AI services, rather than being mechanically projected on the biased interpretations and decisions of AI. The bias in AI data collection and processing is inevitable. Then, as users, citizens must perceive AI as a reference tool and environment that supports their interpretation and decision-making, rather than looking at AI as perfect beings such as God.

Vol.151 No.-

This study explores the directions of AI-era citizenship education from an agency perspective, recognizing generative AI as a pervasive environmental condition intervening in citizens' judgment and actions. To examine pedagogical implications in practice, an eight-week program for pre-service teachers was conducted, featuring AI-assisted writing, self-reflection, collaboration, and citizenship narratives. Findings include: (1) learners re-evaluated judgment criteria while addressing ethical issues and information reliability; (2) sharing AI experiences and collaborating facilitated co-constructing shared meanings and adjusting perspectives; (3) citizenship narratives enabled reinterpreting personal experiences within social-temporal contexts as transformable practices; and (4) while some viewed AI as a cognitive assistant for thought expansion, most still perceived it as an external tool. These results suggest that AI citizenship must expand into a complex practice encompassing autonomous thinking, social relationships, and human-nonhuman entanglement, transcending technical proficiency. It further underscores the importance of designing specific experiences to facilitate such awareness in pre-service teacher education.

Vol.8 No.1

Purpose: This study examined the effects of a program integrating generative AI, hackathons, design thinking, place-based learning, and global citizenship education on middle school students' AI self-efficacy, local knowledge, and global citizenship. Method: A total of 43 first-year middle school students in Ulju-gun, Ulsan participated in a 3-session (135-minute) program, and retrospective pre-post surveys and open-ended responses were analyzed. Results: Statistically significant improvements were found in AI self-efficacy (d=0.621), local knowledge (d=0.507), and global citizenship (d=0.768). The decrease in post-test standard deviations suggests that generative AI contributed to reducing technical gaps among learners. Qualitative analysis revealed that 58.1% of respondents identified AI-powered app prototyping as their most meaningful learning experience. Conclusion: This program holds significance as an integrated educational model that realizes the digital literacy, community-connected learning, and civic competencies emphasized in the 2022 Revised National Curriculum, while suggesting the potential of generative AI-based education for bridging the digital divide.

Vol.45 No.2

This study explored the educational significance of AI in digital citizenship education by examining the educational effects of a flipped learning-based digital citizenship general education course on college students’ digital citizenship (cognitive, ethical, and behavioral domains) and differences in learning outcomes according to generative AI utilization methods. Pre- and post-tests were conducted with students at University I in Incheon, Korea, during the 2024 (AI-restricted) and 2025 (AI-utilization) academic years, and the data were analyzed using mixed-design ANOVA.
