Vol.- No.70
This study attempts to reconceptualize the concept of literacy to reflect literacy practice and learning in the age of artificial intelligence. To achieve this, the study reviews the historical evolution of literacy concepts and theories, reimagining literacy in the context of the age of artificial intelligence through a connectivist theoretical framework. In accordance with connectivist theory, literacy demanded in modern times is redefined as the ability to appropriately select and meaningfully connect fragmented information. Furthermore, this research discusses the literacy required in the age of artificial intelligence, with a focus on AI literacy. Addressing the issue of the mixed usage of AI literacy concepts, the study defines AI literacy by integrating both deductive and inductive approaches and distinguishes its characteristics into two aspects. Additionally, the research explores the potential contribution of AI literacy through the content of Korean language education, proposing specific strategies within the realms of critical literacy and computational literacy.

Ever since Klaus Schwab’s speech on the Fourth Industrial Revolution at the 2016 World Economic Forum, artificial intelligence (AI) has not only become a core branch of learning in computer science but has also become an integral technology in many aspects of our lives. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, which has brought the entire world to a screeching halt, has further enmeshed AI technology into daily life. For college students building their future careers amidst such changes, AI is no longer a mere subject in technical education but a key element in planning and designing their lives. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an AI literacy program that integrates AI-related education into the humanities curriculum. This study first establishes a definition of AI literacy based on existing literacy theories to design a program integrating AI and humanities education. The study also arrives at further insights into this integrated education program design by reviewing currently available AI-related university education facilitated through various projects. The study is meaningful in its attempt to design a program for the AI era in combination with liberal arts education.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the concept and characteristics of ‘AI-based convergence innovative future education’(AI-CIFE) and to explore the direction and content of Korean education to cultivate AI literacy as an AI-CIFE. As a result of this study, the content framework for convergence competency Korean education based on the ‘5 Big Ideas of AI’ for cultivating related literacy was designed and concrete educational material for practice in school settings were prepared. Convergence subjects that achieve the curriculum's 5 core competencies of recognition, representation and reasoning, learning, interaction, and social influence as well as the three content elements of understanding, communication, and practice in each area, were presented. This study’s significance lies in presenting a blueprint for AI-CIFE that nurtures future talents with humanities literacy in technology-oriented AI education.

Redefining Competence in the Age of AI:From Digital Competence to AI Competence DOI http://dx.doi.org/10.62783/SHSS.8.2.35 Jiwon Yoon* & Jungkyu Park** Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the validity of AI competence as a concept for explaining the integrated performance abilities required in education in the age of AI by comparing and analyzing discussions on digital competence and AI literacy, and to redefine its concept and components. This study employed a literature-based comparative conceptual analysis. To this end, key Korean and international studies on digital competence and AI literacy were selected and analyzed according to four criteria: conceptual focus, key components, perspectives on human–technology relations, and educational orientation. The findings showed that digital competence and AI literacy share a common foundation, while differing in terms of technological specificity and educational orientation. The sub-elements of AI literacy were found to extend beyond understanding and interpretation to include application, analysis, critical judgment, ethical responsibility, and collaborative problem solving. Based on these findings, this study defines AI competence as an integrated performance ability to understand and use AI technologies and environments, exercise critical judgment, consider ethical responsibility, and solve problems and act through human–AI interaction. The abilities required in education in the age of AI may be more appropriately explained through the concept of AI competence than through AI literacy. Future research should refine detailed indicators for different target groups based on the components of AI competence and extend the discussion to the development of assessment tools and curriculum design. This study explores the evolving concept of reading and the future directions of reading education in the era of generative artificial intelligence (AI). The study analyzes the distinctions between traditional, digital, and AI-mediated reading by drawing on an understanding of how AI operates and processes language. It highlights the reader’s shift from a passive consumer of fixed texts to an active participant who co-constructs meaning through interactions with AI. In response to these changes, the study proposes three key directions for reading education: (1) a continued emphasis on traditional reading comprehension skills, (2) an integration of strategic reading instruction that incorporates AI tools, and (3) the cultivation of an AI literacy that will enable readers to evaluate AI-generated content critically and use it responsibly. This integrated approach offers a framework for sustaining and enhancing human interpretive and critical thinking abilities in the age of AI.

This study aimed to analyze the effects of a play-based Artificial Intelligence(AI) literacy education program on elementary school students’ understanding of AI concepts. A total of 44 fourth-grade students from S Elementary School in Chungnam were divided into an experimental group (n=22) and a comparison group (n=22). The experimental group participated in a five-session play-based AI literacy program, while the comparison group received traditional lecture-based instruction on the same topic. Both groups completed pre- and post-tests to measure AI concept comprehension, along with a learning attitude survey and classroom observation records. The collected data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests and independent sample t-tests via SPSS. The results showed that the experimental group demonstrated a significant improvement from pre-test to post-test (t(21)=9.78, p<.001) and scored significantly higher than the comparison group in the post-test (t(42)=6.38, p<.001). Classroom observations further revealed that students in the experimental group actively explored AI concepts, explained them in their own words, and shared their understanding with peers. These findings suggest that play-based learning is well-suited to the cognitive characteristics of elementary students and effectively facilitates concept internalization and the development of digital citizenship. This study highlights the practical potential of play-based AI literacy education for younger learners and offers insights for future classroom practices and teacher training.
