Vol.22 No.9

Insect fauna were surveyed in 2011 at Ungok wetland, Obeygol, located in Gochang, Jeonbuk, Korea. In total, 149 species belonging to 11 orders and 57 families were surveyed. Among them, Lepidopterans composed 23.5% (35 species) of the total insect numbers surveyed, comprising the most abundant group, and followed by Coleoptera, Hemiptera, and Odonata with a composition of 22.1% (33 species), 17.4% (26 species), and 10.1% (15 species), respectively. Bothrogonia japonica Ishihara was the most dominant species, and followed by Gastrophysa atrocyanea Motschulsky and Celastrina argiolus (Linnaeus). Phytophagous insects accounted for 60 percent of the total species. Dominance index was the highest in spring by 0.21. Diversity, richness, and evenness indices were the highest in summer by 4.07, 11.84 and 0.96, respectively. In the study area, the legally-protect species were grouped into five groups; 9 export-restricted species, 17 endemic species, 28 indicator species, 1 climate-sensitive biological indicator and 3 southern characteristic species. Additionally, twenty forest insect pest species were surveyed, belonging to 5 orders and 15 families. Therefore, it is required to conduct long-term monitoring and appropriate management based on the ecological characteristic of the habitats to continuously conserve and maintain of wetland.

    • Evaluation of precipitation impacts on benthic macroinvertebrate communities at three different stream types

      Bae, Mi-Jung,Park, Young-Seuk Elsevier 2019 Ecological Indicators Vol.102 No.-

Abstract

We investigated the impacts of two natural disturbances (i.e., heavy rain and dry events) on benthic macroinvertebrates at three different stream types: perennial, intermittent and ephemeral streams. Co-occurrence networks displayed the differences of macroinvertebrate community stability among three different stream types. Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling demonstrated distinct impacts of heavy rain and drought on macroinvertebrate communities. The samples from the heavy rain and dry events were clearly classified under different clusters than other samples regardless of the stream type. Lotic preferred species such as Kiotina decorata and Sweltsa nikkoensis were selected as an indicator species in the perennial stream, whereas lentic preferred species such as Ephemera strigata and Davidius lunatus were chosen in the intermittent stream. In the ephemeral stream, oligochaetes such as Dorydrilus sp. and Fridericia sp., which are readily found in unstable habitats with their short-life cycle, were selected as indicator species. Based on the Random Forest model, the amount of precipitation was the most influential factor, mainly for determining the distribution of benthic macroinvertebrate species, followed by electric conductivity and velocity. The Threshold Indicator Taxa Analysis (TITAN) detected 32 (17.6%) of 182 taxa in total as robust 42 response, and most of the taxa (26 taxa) were sensitive to the increase in precipitation, whereas 6 taxa were tolerant. The community change points for the amount of precipitation were 121.2 mm/month for tolerant species and 36.6 mm/month for sensitive species. Finally, our results revealed that the occurrences of two extreme hydrological disturbances (i.e., heavy rain and dry events) were primary factors for determining the spatial and temporal extent of habitat diversity and stability in the Korean peninsula streams under the least disturbance conditions.

Highlights

Impacts of flood and drought on macroinvertebrates were investigated at different stream types.

Co-occurrence networks evaluated the differences of stability in community structures.

Precipitation was the most influential factor determining macroinvertebrate community.

Flood and drought were main factors determining stability of habitat in the streams.

To study the distribution characteristics of diatom communities in relation to the gradient of water quality and land-use, water samples and epilithic diatoms were collected from 90 sites including mainstream and tributaries, in the Geum River System (GRS) during no rainfall, May 2011. Of 239 taxa identified, Achnanthes convergens and Cymbella minuta were dominated over all the sites. Cluster analysis on the GRS divided into three groups. Group 1 (G1) is the mountainous upstream, a relatively good water quality, and mainly consisted of saproxenous species. Group 2 (G2) is the urban sites, polluted (high in electric conductivity, total phosphate and soluble reactive phosphorus), and saproxenous and common species. Group 3 (G3) is the agriculture sites, and polluted (turbidity, total nitrogen, nitrate), and saprophilous species. There were some discrepancies between abiotic and biotic variables in GRS; biologically similar between G1 and G2, but abiotically similar between G2 and G3. These differences may attribute to not only physiological characteristics of diatom cells, but complicate relationships between microhabitat and water quality. Thus, an urgent development of generalized or standardized methods to diminish the differences between epilithic diatom community and environments is advent.

Comparative Analysis of Avian Assemblages between an Urban Ecological Restoration Site and an Adjacent Forest: The Case of Mt. Sorasan Restoration Site, Iksan, Korea

      최태영,차재규,강다인,문호경 국립생태원 2025 국립생태원회보 Vol.6 No.특집호

Although urban ecological restoration projects are actively implemented in response to urbanization, research evaluating their ecological effects in relation to adjacent natural ecosystems remains limited. This study assessed the ecological impacts of an urban restoration project by comparing wild bird assemblage structures between the Mt. Sorasan Nature Garden (Jayeon-madang) project, an urban ecological restoration site in Iksan, South Korea, and its adjacent existing forest. The restoration site, in its early post-construction phase, had approximately 45% of its area planted with woody species, including pines. Wild bird surveys were conducted in both habitats over one year (May 2017-April 2018), followed by statistical analysis. Results showed significant differences in bird assemblage structure between the sites (permutational multivariate analysis of variance, P<0.001). The adjacent forest, supported by a stable, long-established woodland, exhibited higher species diversity (H’=3.07) and was characterized by foliage gleaners (e.g., Paridae) and bark/trunk foragers (e.g., Picidae). In contrast, the restoration site, with small trees and insufficient cover due to its recent establishment, had lower species diversity (H’=2.38) and limited influx of forest-dwelling birds. However, its open grasslands and wetlands provided feeding and resting habitats for aquatic and ground-foraging birds. In conclusion, although the early-stage restoration site remains functionally limited as a forest, it complements the adjacent forest by creating heterogeneous habitats, thereby enhancing overall urban avian diversity. This study highlights the need for future restoration efforts to extend beyond simple tree planting and incorporate long-term habitat management that accounts for vegetation succession processes.

      이황구,정상우,최준길 한국환경생태학회 2012 한국환경생태학회지 Vol.26 No.1

Benthic macroinvertebrates were investigated in Hoeongseong Lake region from March to October 2010, Korea. Macroinvertebrate communities, composition of the functional feeding groups, habitiat oriented groups and the biological water quality were assessed above and below Hoeongseong Dam in the lake region. Six sites, two (St.1∼2) above the lake, two (St. 3∼4) into the lake, and two (St. 5∼6) below the dam, were selected for quantitative (Surber sampler 30㎝×30㎝, mesh size 0.2 ㎜) and qualitative (Hand net) samplings of benthic macroinvertebrates. As a result, a total of 83 species belonging to 43 families, 17 orders, 8 classes, and 5 phyla were recognized. The EPT-group (50 spp. : 60.24%) that is major taxa or EPT-group plus Diptera (61 spp. : 73.49%) occupied most of benthic macroinvertebrates community. Based on quantitative sampling, the number of benthic maroinvertebrates above the lake was 2,399 individuals including 54 species, 28 families, 11 orders, 4 classes, and 4 phyla, whereas 510 individuals including 16 species, 12 families, 7 orders, 4 classes, and 3 phyla in the lake and 626 individuals including 62 species, 33 families, 13 orders, 6 classes, and 4 phyla below the dam were collected respectively. Dominance index was the highest, with 0.82-0.93 (0.87 ± 0.05) in Hoeongseong lake (St. 3-4), diversity index was 3.04-3.16 (3.10 ± 0.06), evenness index was 0.79-0.85 (0.82 ± 0.03), and richness index was 7.27-8.52 (7.90 ± 0.63), which were relatively higher below the dam sites. In the functional feeding groups, collector-gatherers and collector-filterers were the highest in the whole sites, and predators (Micronecta sedula) was appeared highly in the lake. Moreover, swimmers, burrowers, and clingers were considerably occupied in all collecting sites. The result of the DCA, similarity analysis, and MRPP were well reflective of the composition of lake and stream macroinvertebrates. ESB indicate that the lake sites were evaluated heavily polluted under priority improvement waters. Also, Semisulcospira gottschei, Ecdyonurus kibunensis, Epeorus pellucidus, Rhoenanthus coreanus, Stenelmis sp., and Cheumatopsyche brevilineata are considered as an indicator species above and below Hoeongseong Lake, whereas Macrobrachium nipponense and Micronecta sedula are indicated in the lake. Plant diversity of the pads of electric towers along the deltaic Mediterranean coast of Egypt

      Shaltout Kamal,Beshara Hani,Al-Sodany Yassin,El-Din Ahmed Sharaf,El-Fahar Ragab 한국생태학회 2023 Journal of Ecology and Environment Vol.47 No.3

Background: Comparing with the several types of infrastructures, linear infrastructures are known to facilitate the spread of undesirable species in ecosystems. Recently, some new man-made habitats (e.g., gravel pads of the high-voltage towers, solid wastes and sewage habitats) were established along the Deltaic Mediterranean coast of Egypt as a result of the construction of the E-W coastal international highway. The current study evaluates the floristic composition associated with the pads of high-voltage towers that had been constructed for stabilizing the power line towers in the North Nile Delta. Plant cover was measured for 22 randomly stand. Results: Eighty-four species were recorded, of which 35 are perennials (41.6%), 2 biennials (2.3%) and 47 annuals (56.0%) belonging to 23 families. The largest families were Asteraceae (16 species), Poaceae (15 species), Chenopodiaceae (12 species), and Fabaceae (7 species). Ten aliens (10.7%) out of the 84 species were recorded. Therophytes have the highest percentage (58%), followed by hemicryptophytes (14%), chamaephytes (11%). Six vegetation groups were recognized in the study area after the application of two way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN), Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Phragmites australis, and Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum have the highest presence percentage. Both of Salsola cyclophylla and Solanum villosum were recorded for the first time in North Nile Delta. Natural habitat had the highest α-diversity, but the lowest β-diversity (4.9, 15.4), while gravel pads had the reverse (2.7, 30.8). Some species which are native to the desert habitats (e.g., Rumex pictus, Salsola kali, and Carthamus tenuis) were able to invade the North Nile Delta. Conclusions: Habitat of gravel pads is an expressing form about the intense of disturbance in Deltaic Mediterranean coast of Egypt. More of efforts should be carried out to avoid more human disturbances that creating as ruderal habitats which open the gate to invasive species in the flora of North Nile Delta.
