Vol.29 No.3

Photography is considered ‘new’ medium in art education. It is used as an interesting tool to motivate students to participate more, or as a modernist tool that values good recordability and reproducibility. The fact that photography is categorized as relatively ‘new’ medium even in present day when every image that exists are being transferred digitally makes us think that our perspective on photography is still stuck in modernism. It is also worried if the trend of photography education, which is being discussed actively in various ways outside the field of art education, is ignored in art education. Possibility of expanding the scope of art education and its educational usage will be explored through the study on post-photography that came up front together with coming of digital era. Post-photography is very important for it embraces artistic value and the value as a means of creativity-personality education, and creates various goals for human education. Photography education in art education would be able to find the direction of how to accept trends of the times in the field of art education through recognizing the efforts and direction of contemporary postphotography, and how to valuate art educational meanings on its usage.

Vol.51 No.-

This essay explores the reception and aesthetic symptoms of contemporary digital photography from the perspective of the change and extension of human perception. I explore photographic images that cross such concepts as reality and its copies, reality and virtuality, real and surreal, simulacra and simulation, and conscious and unconscious mind. I analyze them through the surrealist`s aesthetic of spacing, photographic shock and (de)sublimation, and the representation of landscapes of absence. Finally, I argue that the longing for surrealism in contemporary art is the expression of the desire to resolve the paradox between the given reality and Dasein by concentrating on subversive fantasy and virtual reality.

Vol.11 No.3

Due to the advent of a digital image, the photo image became the results of the creation through the binary system, getting away from the physical connection and it reached the point when the even the system order of reappearance an a realistic truth collapses. We can neither trust the photo any longer in an aspect of describing the reality mechanically and objectively and nor sought solace from the point of realistic reappearance. In other words, it means that the status of photo as a realistic one doesn't exist any longer and furthermore, the fabrication and modification of a digital photo engendered a lot of controversy over the purity of a photo. However, a biased view on modification and fabrication of a digital photo comes from the traditional concept. The photo in a traditional sense is based on a real existence, so the learned - biased idea that the real existence may be true may disturb the acceptance of digital images. In postmodernism view, the digitally composited image through fabrication and modification does not refer to the technical image in which only digital technology means everything. In addition, due to the fact that the connection of digital technology and postmodernism cannot be made in the realistic world and the time - characteristics of a digital image, it is attributed to the digital sublimity. The digital image is away from the level of "revelation," which expresses the "present" regardless of the past and future. In this manner, the digital technology becomes a sure foundation for Lyotard's concept of the sublime.

2025 Homo Migrans Vol.32 No.-

Today's digital photographic images exhibit a certain overlapping area between digital and analog photography. In other words, the current ‘digital photographic image’ is a place where the past called analog and the present called digital are simultaneously revealed in the present progressive tense within the name of photography. And today, when these phenomena are being revealed, we call it the post-photography era. There, the physical differences between digital images and analog photographs become meaningless. However, if we look at the physical characteristics of the medium and the formative features that arise from them, digital images and photographs are not ontologically identical. That is, if you look at it from a perspective that values the physical differences between the two media, the two become completely different. However, even in the current post-photography era, it is difficult to distinguish between the two different media because they are read as similar methods of expression under the name of ‘photography.’

Vol.12 No.2

This study is a critique of the ‘tableau form’ photography by German photographer Thomas Struth. In his photography, Struth conducts various visual, perceptual, and sensory experiments on the meaning of public space and architecture, family portraits, natural and cultural relationships, and new technologies. In this paper, I consider the series of Museum Photography and New Pictures from Paradise in terms of their superimposed vision and sensory elements, which include civilization and primacy, expansion and reduction of spatio-temporality, and the creation and removal of narratives. These experiments connect the gap between the present and the past, the ego and the world, and leads to new photographic experiences. Although Struth's photographs take a typological approach, they simultaneously show the characteristics of modernist painting, and sought to overlay pictorial virtuality and photographic realism. In doing this, there are characteristics of individual and historical time, private and public space, figurative and abstract, control and immersion. Struth's work is famous for its large dramatic format, exploiting high-resolution sharpening techniques to areas that are not typically identifiable to viewers. Therefore, the viewer must take time to closely observe the photograph, and in the process, experiences emotions from immersion and sense-perception. During this time viewers also reflect on the society, culture, and art we live in and among. Thus, Struth’s art re-contextualizes the role and concept of painting and photography, and seeks to form a new discourse with ‘tableau form’ photography.

Vol.25 No.2

This article deals with the the characteristics and status of the generative image of the GAN(Generative Adversarial Network) algorithm from the perspective of simulacrum. Photo- based simulacrum has been continuously produced from analog printing or photomontage to digital compositing. The production of the analog simulacrum required sophisticated manual labor and skill, as well as an accurate understanding of the photochemical principle of photography. Since then, with the spread of digital technology, the production of simulacrums has become much easier. By using digital tools, easy and sophisticated operation became possible. With the rapid growth of artificial intelligence algorithms, the production of simulacrum takes another leap forward. GAN is an algorithm that calculates similar data based on learning data, and is a generative model optimized for the production of simulacrum. GAN is opening a new dimension of simulacrum by continuously growing and conquering new tasks. This means that the eyes of artificial intelligence-based machines are once again expanding the human vision.

Vol.24 No.3

The proliferation of images driven by advanced digital technologies has shifted the paradigm of photographic creation from classical “production” to curatorial “rearrangement.” This study traces the recontextualization process of “found photography”—images floating without clear origins or contexts—and examines the structure of “secondary authorship,” a performative power that emerges within this void. To this end, this paper explores the archival practices of Joachim Schmid and Lee Shulman, using Umberto Eco’s information theory and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s concept of language-game rules as primary analytical frameworks. The findings indicate that their curatorial strategies do not operate as mutually exclusive binaries, but rather function as a continuous aesthetic spectrum. Schmid’s approach presents a path of structural anatomy by typologically arranging anonymous photographs to expose the systems of visual culture, while Shulman’s method employs emotional direction to build nostalgia and affective immersion before destabilizing it through retrospective intervention to expose historical absence. These practices collectively expand the scope of archival practice as complementary modalities within the same spectrum. Consequently, contemporary authorship is redefined not as a fixed entity but as a performative function that actively designs exhibition rules. Furthermore, photographic indexicality is reconfigured; it no longer resides in past physical traces but is woven retrospectively as a form of “relational authenticity” within the network of rearrangement structured by the secondary author. By expanding the discourse of found photography into an analysis of the power mechanisms that organize truth and memory this study offers a practical compass for contemporary visual culture studies.

Vol.62 No.-

This article deals with how images produced using artificial intelligence-based algorithms differ from existing photography. A generative adversarial network (GAN) is an algorithm that calculates fake data through balanced learning of generators and discriminators. When using original photos as learning data, it creates images that are visually indistinguishable from photos. There are two issues raised by this. First, the algorithmic image cannot be called a photograph from the point of view of index theory, but it is no different from the existing digital photograph in that it creates a new image by changing the pixel value of the original photograph. Second, the algorithmic image is an advanced form of program automatism and human exclusion, which Vilem Flusser defined as the core of the technical image. Humans are excluded from the production process of the GAN algorithm image. In that sense, the generator of the GAN is a black box. As the automaticity of the program increases, humans do not control image production and become simple consumers. Therefore, it is time for humans to think about how to turn a black box called a program into a “transparent box.”

Vol.76 No.-

This study investigates the fundamental medial differences between AI-generated images and photographs. By employing actor-network theory (ANT), it moves beyond superficial analyses to “unblackbox” the production network of each medium. The analysis reveals photography as an “indexical network” that “captures” the world through physical causality and creates a direct trace of reality. In contrast, AI imagery is a “probabilistic network” that “constructs” images from data archives based on statistical probability originating from linguistic prompts and datasets often “inscribed” with societal biases. The study concludes that the core ontological divergence is the shift from “indexical trace” to “probabilistic construction,” and defines the AI image as a new medium: a “probabilistic generative apparatus.” Furthermore, this framework suggests that artistic value in the age of AI lies not in the final product, but in the “co-creation” process itself, which forms new relationships through human-machine interaction.
