Today we are facing an era of posthumanism. A posthuman refers to a human person in a state beyond/post being human, and posthumanism means an ideology or a movement that seeks to be beyond/post being human, that is, beyond/post humanism. In a sense, humanism is moving towards posthumanism through transhumainsm as a transitional humanism, which is somewhere in a halfway between humanism and posthumanism. Considering this radical change of humans, this paper attempts to investigate a question whether we could still talk about God and even about the Trinity in an era of posthumanism. In order to do so, first, this paper seeks to critically examine terms such as transhumanism and posthumanism. According to this analysis, transhumanism and posthumanism are in an essential continuity, thereby encountering the same criticisms as anthropological dualism, reductionism, individualisticism, and anthropocentricism. Next, it is significant that some groups seek religion or spirituality in an era of posthumanism, by arguing for the compatibility of posthumanism and religion/spirituality. They are different from many forms of posthumanism which are secular or anti-religious. However, a careful analysis of those groups show that they are sure to inescapably encounter those above-mentioned criticisms raised against transhumanism and posthumanism. Therefore what is lacking or missing in such posthumanism and in posthuman religious groups is a robust understanding of relationality, namely, an indispensability of relationality, which could be learned from contemporary “renaissance or revival of Trinitarian theology” in the 20th and early 21st centuries. Considering this point, this paper argues that we could still talk about the Trinity in an era of posthumanism, not only because humans could not be completely resolved into algorithms or data-processing, but also because relations ‘with-in’ humans and even ‘with-out’ humans would be very necessary in such a posthuman era.
Vol.- No.54

Many aspects of humanity, including the definition of human beings and ‘agency’ which has been considered as a unique characteristic of human, are being challenged with the appearance of the posthuman. Education as an activity of human formation is based on humanism, and education as a discipline is also founded on the Enlightenment of the modern era. Accordingly, the emergence of the posthuman invokes the necessity of rethinking humanism-oriented education. As a response to such a problematic situation, this study aims to relate discourses on posthumanism to education and to review humanism-oriented education. In order to achieve the aims, Chapter Ⅱ considered the conditions of posthuman and the significance of posthumanism. Chapter Ⅲ examined the challenge and arguments of the posthuman philosophy against modern humanism. Based on these reflections, Chapter Ⅳ identified the limitations of the subjective pedagogy based on modern humanism, sought for a way beyond them, analyzed whether the objective of cultivating true human beings is still educationally valid, and explored the possibility of educational knowledges from the perspective of posthumanism. The implications are as follows. First, posthumanism deconstructs the dichotomy assumed by the modern concept of subject and suggests a change to the educational ecosystem as an interdependent relationship of continuous process. Second, regarding the challenge of posthumanization, education must help people reconsider the limitations of modern humanism and pursue new aspects of humanity in changing conditions. Particularly, posthuman education must include the development of a posthuman sensitivity. Third, posthumanism calls for a challenge to the epistemology of representation that is currently in a firm position.
Vol.42 No.-
AI and robots are cutting-edge technologies that have triggered posthumanism. After the 2000s, artworks using AI and robots appeared into contemporary art, and simultaneously the identity of the human began to be re-questioned. In this background, the primary purpose of this study was mapping the posthumanism of Korean art. For examining posthumanism, the critical discourses of Braidotti, Hayles and Haraway’s are needed to examin first. That criticized the disembodiment supported by cybernetic posthumanism of Moravec in the 1990’s. In this study, the concept of cyborg and ‘situated knowledge’ are utilized for giving shape to posthumanism of Braidotti and Hayles. If ‘Situated knowledge’ would be partial and empirical knowledge against the totality and universality, then the cyborg could be the embodiment of ‘situated knowledge’. In particular, the ‘gynoid’ and the female cyborgs which represent the female body, are main objects in this study. Because, their given gender, regardless of reproductive function or efficiency, not only reveals anthropocentrism penetrating from humanism to cybernetics, but is also presented as a critical reconstruction of cybernetic posthumanism. The body of sex-differentiated machine also points out that the repression mechanism in cybernetic posthumanism, that is, the human mental dominates the body, and that the binary opposition between mental and body would be a repetition of the oppressive relationship that reveals in gender differences. Therefore, the genderd machine, such as a female cyborg or a gynoid, can be seen as a reference to both the subject/other of anthropocentrism and the critique of cybernetic posthumanism. In addition, this thesis compares artworks before and after the 2010s, when posthumanism was seriously discussed in Korean art. It shows the similarities and differences with the human identity. The sexuality of the gynoids and female cyborgs under anthropocentrism were unrelated to reproductive function, but related to such as sexual gaze or sexual impulse. Also, it showed that they were subordinate to humans. On the other hand, the gynoids and female cyborgs after the 2010s critically reconstructed the disembodiment of cybernetics. These machines include Noh Jin-ah’s Gynoid and Jeong Geum-hyung’s cyborgs. Their work could be explained as the constructed identity that threatens totality, universality, coherence, and unity, or as the existence of a hybrid and profane hybrid. These are also new beings that visualize the ‘vision of finite embodiment’, ‘vision of living within limits and contradictions’, and ‘seeing with translations and specific ways’.

The discourse of posthumanism is spreading widely in the 21st century, an era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Conceptual and philosophical discussions on posthumanism took place in the late 20th century. Humanism reflects the ethos and characteristics of Renaissance thought. It is the product of a modern civilization that rejects all external authorities and traditions that used to control human ability and agency. Humanism has attempted to defend human autonomy and dignity and has cultivated a flourishing human culture. However, the traditional understanding of “humanism” is challenged by the emergence of AI in the era of posthumanism. The world faces drastic changes due to the rapid advancement of science and technology, while new questions about human conditions have arisen. Posthumanism discourse is a result of dynamic interpretation that must grapple with emerging questions. It enables and assists the discovery of blind spots in traditional humanism. This article poses the following questions: Where do the major questions and perspectives of posthumanism come from? What is the new condition after humanism? This study illuminates the historical genealogy of posthumanism and examines pertinent issues. In particular, the study critically engages a theoretical exploration of posthumanism.

In connection with the view of sublime aesthetics, posthumanism is redefined, discussing aesthetics as a ‘post-ex-sistenz’ subject, and posthumanism aesthetics of various ‘-becoming’. Aesthetic experience is followed by pleasure. Seeing the harmonious and beautiful things that exist as an aesthetic experience, we experience joy. However, the sublime aesthetics of posthumanism is different. It is a ‘contradictory emotion’ overwhelmed by fear and thrill. In addition, the aesthetic death of posthumanism is found to be the eternity of repetition (Ewige Wieder-Kunft) and the ontological desire of ‘-being’ through the process of extinction when posthuman-zoe achieves its purpose due to its self-permanence and materialistic characteristics. I put forward a hermeneutic reflection while tracking the aesthetic death of posthumanism, which seeks to escape from a finite life. The aesthetic death of posthumanism can be referred to as the hermeneutics of relationship. This includes embodied relationship, hermeneutical relationship, and finally background relationship.
Vol.34 No.2
This study aims at analysing and reporting the present situation of posthumanism in educatinal research, and based on it, proposing perspectives for contemporary education. Current status of research according to KCI(Korean Citation Index) and conferences in the field of education can be summarized as follows. First, educational research on posthumanism, which began in 2013 in Korean educaiton, has shown a slow start comparing to other disciplines of human science and socical science, but it has been rapidly increased since 2018 after the so called discourse of The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Alpha-Go Event in 2016. Second, it has been performed mainly in the field of subject education (art education) and education in general. The former can be characterized as introductory study and application in subject education, while the latter focuses on investigation of the theoretical possibility and limitation of posthumanism in education through discourse analysis. Third, the latter, namely reception of posthumanism in education general, can be divided into two different streams according to the two types of posthumanism itself (post-humanism and posthuman-ism). The former demands to pay radical attention to the relationship between all kinds of being in the ecosystem and a broad concept of education of coexistence and symbios. The latter suggests a critical review of human enhancement theory by posthuman-ism and preservation of traditional humansim. Fourth, for a further research, it is needed to have a supplementary understanding on humanism in a broad sense in its historical context, not just the distored humanism in the sense of human-exceptionalism, and to have more balanced and detailed supplementation in theoretical backgroud on the side of reception of post-humanism, while solidary cooperation with bioconservatives is needed in light of refinement of humanism in the context of contemporary education for the reception of posthuman-ism in education.

Cyborg has emerged as a new ontology and anthropology in the era of advanced science and technology. Cyborg is commonly understood through media and novels to refer to a mixed being that combines humans and machines. However, there are many different perspectives on cyborgs, and some of these perspectives accept cyborgs in a completely different sense, and perspectives are contrasted in opposition. However, interestingly, in common, the cyborg discourse reveals the light and dark sides of the era of advanced science and technology, while simultaneously dismantling the concept of ‘human’ as we have traditionally defined it. Representative examples include the cyborg discourse of transhumanism and posthumanism. Transhumanism is an ideological movement led by various classes of people who believe in cutting-edge science and technology. They define current humans as ‘transhumans’, or ‘cyborgs’, as a transitional stage of becoming ‘posthumans’. Posthumans are futuristic humans who upload their minds to computers and become immortal by achieving ‘de-embodiment’ and ‘de-cyborg’. Therefore, in transhumanism, cyborgs are set as an intermediate stage that appears in the process of technological advancement. However, contrary to transhumanism, which inherits modern enlightenment and expresses an optimistic understanding of science and technology, posthumanism proposes ‘post-human’, or cyborg, as the new human subject required in the ‘anthropocene’, which can be said to be the other side of the fourth industrial revolution-the era of advanced science and technology. They understand that global problems such as the current climate crisis, refugee issues, the gap between rich and poor, and discrimination against women are derived from the ‘modernity’ that drove scientific and technological civilization. For them, the posthuman, who overcomes the modern concept of human, is understood as a relational being who lives in a mutual and symbiotic way with animals, machines, and nature through the medium of ‘body’. Therefore, regardless of whether the term cyborg is appropriated positively or negatively, I note that the cyborg discourse of posthumanism suggests the possibility of a new anthropology required in the era of science and technology or the Anthropocene. Furthermore, I explain that the relational and ecological human understanding implied by in eco-theological anthropology has aspects that can criticize the cyborg discourse of transhumanism and at the same time accommodate the ecological aspects of the cyborg discourse of posthumanism. Lastly, I would like to suggest that the uniqueness and distinctiveness of humans, which is weakened by posthumanism’s cyborg humanism, can be reconstructed in a sufficiently post-anthropocentric way based on eco-theological anthropology.
Vol.- No.68
“Posthuman” means a future human being who can no longer be called a human because major abilities exceeds the current standards and limitations. This concept re-adjusts and includes the phases and boundaries of other non-human beings. Thus, the traditional view of the human world and the human image can no longer be maintained. Posthumanism is a variety of humanities / criticism discourses on the future of human beings and human beings after human changed according to the development of science and technology. Critical posthumanism is criticized at the same time as it inherits humanism. It aims to diversify or renew modern human views, to avoid one-sided technology optimism or fear, and to reflect on it. Posthumanism has been embodied through the rapid development of advanced science and technology and the influence of postmodernism. However, posthumanism differs from postmodernism in that it is an ideology of the era that experiences the loss and fall of the modern “human” and humanism as a fact. Posthumanism is also an interdisciplinary discourse in the era when the boundaries between humanities and science have been broken down under new technological and cultural conditions, and today it is also related to 'post-humanities' and the changes of universities. SF(Science Fiction) is a “perfect posthuman genre.” It forms a popular image, emotion, and ideological attitude about science and technology and posthuman. That is why (critical) posthumanist criticism must actively intervene in SF. SF movies and novels are based on the knowledge and expectation of science and technology, and (popular) science writing also expands the image and ideology of posthumanity through narrative imagination, and even finally realizes it. “Since the era itself is regarded as SF,” analysis and criticism of SF are required to understand the posthuman society and culture.
Vol.118 No.1
This study examines the issue of social justice that humanity will face in the post-human era and tries to find appropriate answers based on Immanuel Levinas' justice theory. First, this study explains several terms of post-humanity such as post-human, trans-human, trans-humanism and post-humanism. Second, this research highlights the issue of social justice as one of the challenges that the post-human era will face as it examines the possibility of raising the "robot rights" (or, post-human rights), and also figures out the issues of social justice that will happen in the process of coexistence of post-human and human. Finally, in order to deal with these issues, this paper approaches Levinas in terms of the theory of justice as it focuses on the meaning of human relationship and a community which is hospitable of others including both human and post-human for a just post-human era.
