Vol.- No.257

Two myths were produced on the subject of history in the ‘heyday of the nation-state.’ One is that literature and history make up a completely different genre of humanities, which is the assumption that literature is based on fiction and that history has nothing to do with it. Until just a century ago, the historical memory that there were many ambiguous aspects of the distinction between the two categories disappeared completely. The other is the fact that in a strict sense, history produces knowledge based on historical facts, that is, in history, the historical assumption of ‘what if’ is simply unnecessary and meaningless. This is in fact an inevitable consequence of the binary opposing logic of fact versus fiction. This is because assumptions cannot intervene in the representation of facts. However in the ‘era of an outdated nation-state’, the myth that fiction is the exclusive property of literature and the groundless principle that ‘historical assumptions are taboo’ are collapsing on their own. One is due to history’s own need to stop the tightrope between science and literature, and the other is with the development of digital history, which has been advancing for a long time with the development of science and technology! In short, the use of fiction as a historical method and the development of computational history based on simulation techniques are bringing about a ‘revolutionary’ change in the form of narrative in history.

Vol.0 No.42

The usefulness of history is based on the fact that it provides the wisdom to understand current problems and find solutions in light of past examples. However, can history exert such an effect even in the post COVID-19 era of the “New normal”, when one has to pursue a new path away from the existing trajectory? In order to go on a new path of civilization that humanity has never been on, what is needed is a navigation system that can cope with the “New normal”, not a map of the past. It is thanks to the development of artificial intelligence that humans have been able to rely on an autonomous navigator to drive a car. Computational history is a new model that seeks to use artificial intelligence as a tool in history. Through simulating the imagined historical process, computational history contributes not only to re-recognition of the ‘past future’ but also to making the future beyond predicting it. If the sustainability of the post COVID-19 civilization depends on whether or not the crisis can be turned into opportunity, history should expand its research scope into simulations that can prepare for the “New normal” beyond representing past facts.

Vol.0 No.240

This article seeks to review the development of digital history in the UK, through looking at online databases for British history. In the 1960s a small number of British historians started to utilise computing technologies for their studies, mainly for cliometric and statistic analysis. After the mid-1990s, the advance of the world wide web brought a considerable turn towards making historical databases. Based upon the resources transcribed to early databases historical projects using digital methods such as mapping, visualisation and data mining appeared. A recent database built on the presence of aliens and immigrants in the late medieval England illuminated the hitherto unnoticed group of people and the English society’s hostilities towards them. Medical history is one of the areas that is developing fast, thanks to active digitisation of historical sources.

Vol.- No.76

During the Covid-19 crisis, mankind unprecedentedly went through many things that had not been experienced in the past, and, as its consequence, “New normal” occurred, where abnormal things create a new standard. Will the history of learning from past examples be useful in solving the problem of “New normal”? In the future, pandemics and climate disasters are expected to threaten the survival of mankind and the sustainability of its civilization. Human beings cannot overcome such a complex crisis by relying on maps depicting past examples. Few people drive on unfamiliar roads today, relying on maps. Once the destination is entered into the navigation system before driving, then the system simulates and tells us the path optimized for changes that occur in the process of driving. Just as the paradigm of driving has adapted to a change, a new historical navigation is necessary to take the path of civilization that mankind has never been to. Computational history is a history paradigm for the future that could serve as such a navigation.
