The purpose of this study is to examine the ‘view on death’ in Buddhism and Shamanism, and the ‘aspect in which the problem of death is dealt with through rites’, thereby understanding the meaning of death in Korea. Investigated were the perspectives on spirit and afterlife as recognized in Buddhism and Shamanism. Both Buddhism and Shamanism combined around the concept of universality. While Buddhism was influenced by folk beliefs in its perspective on spirit, Shamanism enthusiastically accepted the thoughts on afterlife from Buddhism. In Buddhism, the recognition of existence after death is internalized in depth with the folk idea around the perspective on spirit. Regardless of the original teachings of Buddhism, a belief in the existence of spirit was actualized in encounters with believers, which eventually collapsed the boundaries between Buddhism and Shamanism. Shamanism first bore the characteristics of a natural religion in which there is no distinction between the two worlds without the solid concepts of judgment and salvation. This aspect has been merged into innate humanity, like the concepts of paradise, hell and retributive justice, since the gradual influence of Buddhism began. Next, the death rituals of Buddhism and Shamanism were examined. Based on 49Jae(a death ceremony held at the 49th day from the deathday) and Jinogi Gut(a ceremony for sending the spirit of the deceased to paradise), the structures of Cheondojae(a ceremony for guiding spirits in hell or spirits wandering around this world to paradise) in Buddhism and Neok Gut(spiritual ceremonies) in Shamanism were analyzed, and the aspect in which godly beings exist were dealt with. Subsequently, an analysis was conducted on the aspect in which the purposes of two death rituals having similar structures and afterlife views are fulfilled. First, as seen in the steps of the rituals, Cheondojae reinforces its purpose by pursuing discrimination and originality, while the same goes for Neok Gut by pursuing complexity and repetition. In Cheondojae, the purpose and contents in each step are original and are unfolded in a unilinear way. On the other hand, Neok Gut is separated into Yiseung Gut(a ceremony for this world) and Jeoseung Gut(a ceremony for the other world), and the journey leading to the other world is unfolded in multiple levels. In addition, in Neok Gut, the process of problem solving of the deceased is reproduced repetitively, which all indicate repetition as well as complexity. Second, a difference in the characteristics of communication between godly beings and mortals was found. In Cheondojae, mortals praise and pray to godly beings, and the godly beings show them the truth. On the other hand, in Neok Gut, the communication is rather avant-garde and radical. Godly beings bestow different words depending on their status and role, while the deceased also express their ideas drastically. Particularly in the conversation between the deceased and the bereaved, the boundaries between the two worlds are torn down, and a pinnacle of emotional correspondence is reached, which works as a primitive force born in the rites of Shamanism. Third, a difference in the festival feature for the sublimation of sadness and regeneration was found. Unlike the solemnness and grief of Confucian rituals, death in Buddhism and Shamanism is viewed as a path to the next world, which make the festival feature visible. The songs, dances and amusements brought into the death rituals of Buddhism and Shamanism are a means to send the dead to a better place and to lead living beings back to their normal lives in good shape. This indicates that the rituals are mirrors to the view on life and death, which turns a ‘sad and bleak death’ into a ‘blessed and hopeful life.’

This paper examines the death view and customs of the orok, which belong to the three major indigenous peoples of Sakhalin Island along with the paleoasiatic nivh and tungusic evenki. The orok link life and death with the presence or absence of a soul. Life is a state in which the soul resides in the body, and death is a state in which the soul is separated from the body. The funeral protocols encompasses the entire process from death, funeral, y, and the soul transfer rites. Although shamans do not participate in funeral, do participate in the soul transfer rites. In the past, funerals for children were absolute. The size and procedure of adult funerals vary depending on the deceased's surname, age, social status, and cause of death. The funeral is gradually converted into a rites for the soul of the deceased, a rites for the middle realm between the soul of the deceased and an ancestor spirit, and a rites for an ancestor spirit. Three or four years after the funeral, the soul transfer rites is held near to the tomb, led by a shaman, to guide the soul of the deceased to the underworld. After the soul transfer rites, the souls of the deceased are completely integrated into the underworld, and after a certain period of time, they are reincarnated into their own clan. The funeral protocols of the orok are a complex ritual in which mixed and fused of various tribes of different ancestry, such as the neighboring paleoasiatic nivh, tungus nanai, ulchi, evenki, russian, chinese, etc. In addition, various layers of ideas from different eras, such as shamanism, animism, the soul view, and the cosmic view, are mixed and fused here.

The purpose of this paper was to clarify the Even’s view of the soul through related funeral. In the funeral of the Even, ideas from various eras, such as the view of universe, life and death, view of soul, totemism, and shamanism, were mixed together, and christian elements were accepted along with the characteristics of the local group, creating an original model, but the traces of traditional beliefs are still preserved. A adult’s funeral usually goes through the ritual to straighten out the dead body ⇒ ritual to wash and shroud dead body ⇒ funeral ⇒ meal ⇒ return home ⇒ purification’s rite. In the traditional funeral methods of the Even, there are a wooden funeral, where a coffin is placed on a tall tree top or a wooden post, and a ground jang, where a coffin is placed by making a square structure with wooden poles or pillars on the ground. Wooden funerals are the oldest funeral method, and after Christian acceptance, all turned into burial. Churima is a house where the dead will live in the underworld, and hɛvɛ is a storage warehouse for the dead’s belongings. It is an essential element of the Even funeral, and this tradition is still maintained. Since reindeer are a means of transportation for the deceased to ride to the underworld, the rite of dedication of reindeer was essential in the past Even funeral. The taboo that family members and relatives of the deceased have to keep, which has been passed down to the Eben since ancient times, is basically due to fear of the souls of the dead. Blood, fire, and birds are used as main motif in the entire process of funeral of the even.

I think that it is characteristic of Japanese religion that the number of people adhering to various religions is greater than the population of Japan. It is thought that this is connected with Japanese duality of religious views and view of life and death. In this study, I examine the cause of Japanese duality of religious views and the problem of its origin through analysis of the Nihonshoki, which is the first history book published by the Japanese state, from a historical point of view. As a result, I understood that the ideas of Taoism and Buddhism coexisted with Shintoism in the ancient Japanese outlook on death. Such a cause is the result that foreign religion such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism had an influence on Shintoism. The origin of modern Japanese double religious view can be seen from Nihonshoki.
Vol.- No.39
The purpose of this study is to study change of funeral customs in North Korea. Also, to evaluate how much has progressed socialist way of life that North Korean government has forced residents. And through the comparison of South Korea, this study is intended to find the point of communication of spiritual culture in the funeral customs. The subject of this study is composed of folklore survey data which made in North Areas in the 1960s. The funeral customs can be captured in the folklore survey data of North Korea in the 1960s were not much different from South Korea. Even the socialist state system superstitious elements, elements of empty formalities and vanity pointed to the harmful effects of traditional funeral customs were being continued. Although the procedure originated from the perspective of confucianism soul was abandoned, customs originated from peculiar spiritual culture of South Korea did not disappear easily. Through this, I found that the peculiar spiritual culture of our nation exert a more powerful force than any ideology. By finding the point of communication of traditional spirit world through funeral customs of the North and South, although the division of the territory and the system has been continued, I can make sure that integration is possible in terms of human inner and life and culture.

Korea’s traditional after-death ceremonies have experienced an overall topographical change in the end of the 20th century. Several decades ago, funeral rites and religious ceremonies of Confucianism was the main axis of postmortem ceremonies, while the areas of Buddhism and shamanism were relatively apparent. However, the after-death ceremonies of Confucianism and shamanism has been reduced and simplified nowadays. With this trend, Chundojae(薦度齋) which is held at a Buddhist temple is becoming the alternative plan for after-death ceremonies chosen by many people irrelevant with belief in Buddhism. Chundojae was a ritual centered on Buddhism believers held to lead the spirits of the dead to heaven. Now it is widely accepting functions that the Confucianism funeral rites and religious ceremonies, exorcism of shamanism have been in charge of. As for these factors, the concept of life and death and ceremony elements within Chundojae were an important foundation for choosing it as an alternative ceremony of Confucianism and shamanism. Chundojae had an ‘expedient spirit concept’ which was closely combined with ‘spirit of filial piety and ancestor worship’ that is the core of Confucianism funeral rites and religious rituals, and the exorcism of shamanism. Desires for ceremonies of folks were being satisfied through the ideological basis of these ceremonies. As the features of Chundojae and the recent multi-religious complex ceremony functions are raised, it is considered that we are at a point where Buddhism of total interpenetration and omnidirectional functions of Chundojae are brought into relief as an after-death ceremony more than ever. Also, we can see that a religious mind pursuing the permanence of existence before reasonable recognition on spirits and life after death is settled in the conceptual background of Chundojae. The permanence through karma is a profound concept that is difficult to accept, so ceremony subjects recognize the person to lead to heaven as a spiritual being, unconnected to the substantial teachings of ‘selflessness(無我)’ of Buddhism. The folks’ mind on this permanence did not have to be divided with shamanism’s concept on spirits that exchange with living beings as moral subjects, as well as the Confucianism spiritual concept regularly responding to ancestors through ceremonial situations although it does not recognize afterlife. The reason why Chundojae of these features was able to be held seems to be greatly depending on the religious characteristics of Buddhism. In western religions, the one and only God exists as an absolute being. However, Buddhism believes anyone can become a Buddha through illumination. Bowing down to the dead at temples while worshiping ancestors was possible. Chundojae was able to develop by accepting sacrificial rites of folks.

This study aims at exploring the construction of a tomb, aspects of arranging its social relationships and the cultural practice of the lineage village. To achieve these aims, this study attempts to expose how tombs in the research area are arranged according to the social, hierarchical relationships of the buried person. Furthermore, this paper reveals how the Confucian doctrine of the immortality of the soul is related to the space of the dead through the funeral procedure and the villagers's perceptions towards the corpse. In addition, this paper aims at exposing the social, cultural practice of the yangban class during the Yi dynasty. In so doing, I believe that we can comprehensively understand the conception of the residents living in the lineage village towards the tombs, the process of residents' migration into the village, the process of divisions from a clan, the arrangement of a tomb and the social, cultural foundation of the yangban class. The results of my research in the village of Sinchon-ri, Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, in which the cultural practice of the descendants of noron adherents was put into practice, are as follows: Firstly, the residents's conception towards death and the spatial construction of a tomb in the research area does reflect the Confucian value system; that is, the Confucian doctrine of the immortality of the soul is in favour of the interment of the dead over the cremation of the corpse. In addition, the social order of house and a clan corresponds to that of the dead. Secondly, the residents in the village constructed the tomb not only as the burial site of the dead, but also in accordance with social relations based on genealogy, The tombs in the mountainous area are not only regarded as the places to which the dead should return, but also reflect their social relationships as "me."or a member of the lineage villagers, to be interred within the boundary of the burial site is just like to return his house with emotional satisfaction. Thus, the descendants construct the space of a tomb for the dead in order to restore and to extend their social, cultural vitality, In addition, converting genealogical relationships into the renewed social space, the descendants imprint the history of memories about the dead in space. In so doing, the residents consider the tomb to be more than the final resting house for the dead, and they bestow the continuity of lineage upon the dead and their descendants by evoking social vitality and a sense of friendliness, and by transmitting domestic cultures to their descendants. Thirdly, the space of the dead consists of the same space of the living as a community. Generations after generations, those descendants who constructed tombs close to their residential area or their village structured a total order in space by putting the history of death into practice. The shape of the burial mount, the relative degree of intimacy among lineal branches, the degree of consanguinity, rituals dividing each lineal branch, a social class and social power have all contributed to the spatial construction of the tombs. The tombs coexistent with the village society of the descendants as the social, cultural space of the dead play a significant role in creating the social position, history and collective consciousness of a house. At the same time, the tombs constructed in space in accordance with the existent social order and relationships between ancestors and descendants are places for representing the necessary memories of the social, cultural practice of the yangban which differentiate themselves Com other local residents by means of the ornaments of the tombs.
