This thesis aims to examine memoirs written by Korean women with lived experience of eating disorders through the religious theory of Jonathan Z. Smith, in order to clarify how these subjects endure and make meaning of the incongruities among body and food, normalcy and recovery, and self-identity. Eating disorders constitute a crisis that unsettles the subject’s body, everyday life, and self-understanding. At the same time, however, they may also function as a language through which the subject explains her identity and as a basis for organizing the order and rules of daily life. This thesis focuses on this ambivalent relationship between illness and the subject. Medical approaches provide a language of diagnosis and treatment, feminist approaches reveal the gendered and structural conditions of eating disorders, and existing approaches in religious studies have tended to treat illness primarily in relation to healing discourse or institutional religion. Yet even when these perspectives are considered together, the process by which subjects narratively construct their ambivalent relationship with illness and endure its incongruities still requires further explanation. Beginning from this point, this thesis takes as its central question why subjects write their eating disorders as stories. To answer this question, this thesis reinterprets Smith’s concept of incongruity in the context of illness narratives. For Smith, religion may be understood as a creative practice through which human beings respond to the incongruity between map and territory and establish a meaningful place in which to dwell. This thesis reads such incongruity not simply as an occasion for thought or rearrangement, but as an embodied condition that structures the subject’s particular experience and enables the articulation of identity. Furthermore, it redefines two modes of response to incongruity—ritualization and mythologization—as the subject’s ritual practice and mythic storytelling. The primary materials analyzed in this thesis are four memoirs: Park Jini’s Samkigi Yeonseup 『삼키기 연습』, Jeong Yuri’s Nalgeot Geudaero-ui Seopsik Jangae 『날것 그대로의 섭식장애』, Jeong Yeheon’s Kkeokkyeodo Geunyang Haneun Yonggi 『꺾여도 그냥 하는 용기』, and Park Chaeyoung’s Igeotdo Je Salm-imnida 『이것도 제 삶입니다』. This thesis analyzes the illness experiences represented in these memoirs by reconstructing them into three phases: onset, symptoms, and memoir writing. By viewing religion not as a fixed substance but as a pattern of meaning-making in response to incongruity, this approach is effective in capturing religious meaning-making at work in everyday narratives outside institutional religion. The findings of this thesis are as follows. First, in the phase of onset, the subject experiences a situation in which multiple maps—medical, familial, social, and gendered—are simultaneously imposed upon a single body. Yet none of these maps fully coincides with the lived experience of the body. In this sense, the eating disorder appears not merely as an individual pathology, but as a site in which the incongruity between multiple maps and the lived body is condensed. Second, the intake and refusal of food, the measurement and surveillance of the body, and repeated rules and prohibitions are narrated in the memoirs as forms of ritual practice. Through repetitions that meticulously manage time, food, and procedure, these acts produce an order set apart from ordinary life and become connected to semantic networks of purification and control. Nevertheless, this order does not resolve incongruity; it remains a temporary order established within the reduced space of the body. Third, memoir writing appears as a work of mythic reconstruction of illness experience. By translating the body once recorded through numbers and rules into a language of meaning, memoir writing becomes a process through which the subject redraws the map of her illness experience. This mythologization does not seal illness experience into a narrative of complete cure. Rather, through its unfinished form, it transforms an experience that cannot be closed by recovery into something that can be spoken again. This thesis thereby clarifies why subjects write their eating disorders as stories. They write not in order to eliminate incongruity, but in order to create a meaningful place from which they can live within it. They also write in order to share their experiences with others who suffer similarly, and to transform the body confined within the language of disorder and illness into a body that can be articulated anew in ontological terms. This conclusion contributes to eating disorder studies by repositioning the subject not as an object of diagnosis, but as an active agent who constructs meaning within suffering. It also contributes to religious studies by extending Smith’s theory into the domains of the body and illness narrative, and by suggesting the possibility of reinterpreting the relation between myth and ritual through the concrete textual form of the memoir. The religiosity discussed in this thesis, however, is a pattern of meaning-making analytically identified by the researcher; this thesis does not seek to sacralize or romanticize symptoms or writing.

This study explored the life and meaning experienced as an eating disorder patient through narrative exploration. To this end, it tells the story of life before being diagnosed with eating disorders, the beginning of eating disorders, living as a patient with eating disorders, the treatment process of eating disorders, and the current life and the meaning of eating disorders. Five adults who have been diagnosed as patients with eating disorders, have a prevalence of more than 3 years, and have received counseling to treat eating disorders were selected as participants in the study. The data collection period is from July 2021 to September 2021, with an average of 120 minutes per session for each participant, a total of three in-depth interviews, and research texts were prepared. The research puzzle of this study is, first, what is the life experienced by patients with eating disorders? Second, what does eating disorder mean to patients with eating disorders? Third, what does it mean to release your disease to patients with eating disorders? As a result of the research, a total of four meanings were derived: "The desire to fill the hole", "The desire to let go of has become everything", "The expectation of wanting professional help is vain", and "Someone trust me". Based on these results, the meaning of life and experience of patients with eating disorders was discussed in the context of personal justification, practical justification, and social justification. Eating disorder is a disease in which patients do not want to inform the disease and have low motivation for treatment and give up. However, studies from various perspectives are needed because the mortality rate among mental disorders is high and it has a lot of negative effects on individual lives such as depression and non-killing self-harm. In Korea, qualitative studies related to eating disorders are very insufficient. Therefore, this study is meaningful in that it explores the personal experiences of patients with eating disorders covered by the large shadow of "diet" and contains their direct stories. This could be a material that can understand the client and provide more effective help in the counseling scene. In addition, it could be an opportunity to courage patients with hopeless and lonely eating disorders. Finally, the significance of this study and subsequent studies were suggested.

      RANK : 248703

In this study, the Korean Version of Testable Assumption Questionnaire-Eating Disorders(TAQ-ED) of Hinrichsen, Garry and Waller(2006) was developed. Researcher identified the reliability and validity of TAQ-ED which assess the negative beliefs related with eating disorders. TAQ-ED was administered with Eating Disorders Inventory(EDI) and shortened version of Young Schema Questionnaire(YSQ-S3A) for female undergraduate students(N=589) who lived in Daegu, Korea. Among them, 100 students were conducted TAQ-ED repeatedly after 4 weeks. As a result, internal consistency was Cronbach's α .76∼.85 and test-retest reliability coefficients(r) were .75∼.84 for total and subscale scores. Factor analysis showed three-factors structure which accounted for 46.3% of the total variance. These results showed some difference with the original questionnaire but three subscale factors were classified into similar pattern. So, negative beliefs about other person's perspective on obesity(23.0%), negative beliefs about weight dyscontrol(12.2%) and negative beliefs about emotion dysregulation(11.1%) were founded. The results of the correlation analysis between TAQ-ED and EDI were significant(r=.13∼.51, p<.01). The Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted with TAQ-ED and YSQ-S3A. The results of the correlation analysis were significant(r=.09∼.35, p<.01). The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that Eating disorders were predicted partially by the negativity/pessimism, approval-seeking/recognition-seeking, emotional deprivation, self-sacrifice, subjugation, defectiveness/shame schema(R2 =.14, p<.01). The TAQ-ED can be used as objective instrument for assessing negative beliefs of clients who have eating problems. Finally, several limitations, implications and the necessity of future study were discussed.

Eating disorder is an increasingly problematic social phenomena, and it is becoming an unavoidable problem for today's Christians. Despite this rise, our understanding of the problems related to eating disorder and its research is desperately lacking. This article examines the general understanding of the eating disorder, self psychological perspective and approach, the limitations and attributions of biblical counseling. It also explores the biblical perspective for the cause of eating disorder which is, wickedness of our heart and provides helpful applications to help families struggling with eating disorder The main characteristic of an eating disorder can be described as a problematic eating behavior. It can be classified into two big categories which are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Self psychology regards eating disorder as an addiction and classifies it as a narcissistic behavioral problem resulting from structural deficiency. In other words, eating disorder is the result of absence of parental role as a selfobject in internalization of self structure that would've otherwise been present in a healthy developmental process. Therefore, the symptoms of eating disorders can be seen as an attempt to fulfill the structural deficiency. And the core method of the self psychological treatment is the role of the counselor which is to provide empathic stance so the counselee's needs can be met. Self psychology provides insight of humans as a relational being and its understanding of sinful humans but, it focuses too much on 'self', therefore identifying them as a catastrophically dependent beings that forever require selfobjects to maintain themselves. Self psychology undoubtfully has its limitations, it causes an idolatry as 'self' and 'object' become the center instead of God, fails to address sinful problems caused by people's wickedness, which forces self-justifications and helps them maintain the status quo of a victim. In response to self psychological view, biblical counseling understands the symptoms as the result of our wickedness, that we are condemned beings due to our sins and that every problem is the result of severed relationship with God. Eating disorder is all about people becoming an idol for themselves, greed for food, laziness and desire for a instantaneous solution, self salvation, legalism thus becoming self-centered. This article addresses this wickedness of the heart in a biblical perspective in order to restore our severed relationship with God in his grace of salvation and to help live a sanctified life of loving one's neighbor similar to that of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, this article proposes a specific application for restoring spiritual problems and problems with family members struggling with eating disorders.

Eating disorder is a psychiatric illness which involves irregular eating habits, such as sitomania and anorexia, that result from a psychological discomfort in regards to food intake. These two symptoms have the opposite symptoms; while patients suffering from sitomania experience hyperorexia, which leads to nausea and excessive exercise, those under anorexia restrict their food intakes to unhealthily small amount. It has been reported that more females suffer from this disease than males. Primary causes of the disorder include low self-esteem, lack of self-control and perfectionism on the personal aspect, while on the environmental aspect, the current social atmosphere that idealizes a distorted concept of beauty is accused of being another cause. Patients have tendency to set extraordinarily high criteria out of perfectionism and be easily depressed by their inability to meet these goals, and they lack energy or happy feelings in everyday lives and feel depressed or saddened most of the times. Symptoms such as surreptitious overeating and forced vomiting as compensation for what they have eaten appear notably when the patients experience anxiety and stress. Apart from these medical conditions, the patients also feel guilty, shameful, worthless and miserable after an episode of the eating disorder. As they are reluctant to reveal to others what they are experiencing, they feel more isolated and miserable. Although eating disorder is categorized as “mental” illness, it also has critical impacts on patients’ physical aspects. In particular, female patients in their 10s to 30s account for the largest proportion of the patients and therefore are responsible for a nation’s birth rate. However, a number of patients among them refuse to undergo medical examination and, even if they do, not many has recognized its magnitude. In relieving the mental and physiological distresses, various kinds of treatments have been proven to be fruitful; clinical treatments, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodrama and dance/movement therapy are shown to be effective. For the female eating-disorder patients who tend to be highly defensive, Art therapy has been shown helpful for them to relieve tension and anxiety and to express their inner side by using various kinds of art media. This, in turn, lets them reflect themselves, reduce stress, and be invigorated. Among the methods of art therapy, group art therapy enables the patients to step out of isolation and form a bond of sympathy to share their emotions. In this context, further qualitative studies are required for understanding the experience of female eating-disorder patients. The purpose of this study is to deeply understand the meaning and essence of the experience of the patients through collecting, describing and interpreting the experience. Therefore, the research question is “what experience do the female eating-disorder patients in their 10s to 30s have through the group art therapy, and what are the meaning and essence of it?” The researcher adopted Max van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological research method, a qualitative research method that is flexible and useful for grasping the essence of events. The avoidance of other structured templates was for the purpose of accommodating as vividly as possible the various experiences of female eating-disorder patients in their 10s to 30s. The research followed four steps of focusing on the essence of the experience, exploring phenomenological experience, hermeneutic phenomenological reflection and hermeneutic phenomenological writing. These four steps are further specified in eleven procedures. Participants were 6 females in their 10s to 30s who had received group art therapy four times, once a week, starting from the beginning of the August. After the therapy schedule, in-depth interviews were conducted once or twice (if needed) in hermeneutic phenomenological reflection stage to collect and analyze their art therapy experience. Analyzing those data, this study derived eight essential topics, including <Starting the heart-felt journey to find the answers to my illness> <Becoming nervous in the fear of exposing long-hidden illness of myself>, <Finding out that art therapy was contrary to what I had expected>, <Feeling touched by the rapport with the company of same misery>, <Able to get to know about my appetite through the session>, <Reflecting myself in the communication with the art therapist>, <Finding myself indulged into drawing like I had been while eating>, and <Gradually trying new changes>, which were further divided into twenty-three sub-topics. Based on the results and collected data, the conclusions on the meaning and nature of the experience were presented as follows: First, the patients had decided to participate in therapy sessions in seeking for the cause and solutions of their disorder and were able to know better about themselves without the pressure of analysis and evaluation, which is on the contrary of their initial expectation. Second, the patients first worried about exposing their illness that they had long concealed from strangers, but then they felt deeply touched by the experience of reflecting themselves and feeling the sense of connectedness through interactions with other fellow group members and art therapist. Third, the patients were able to ease their strain while working on the artistic tasks and to feel invigorated. Also, fueled by the hope of overcoming their illness, they have started actively making changes to their everyday lives. The academic significance of this study can be found in that it deals with the basic role of art therapist regarding the pre-explanation and confidentiality, as well as other aspects such as sympathetic support and non-judgmental attitude that hold much weight in clinical applications of art therapy for female eating-disorder patients. In addition, it provides the foundation to help improve eating disorders by presenting the possibility to guide the female patients to turn attention from their diets to artistic creativity and by investigating how the artistic activities, therapeutic program and methods they prefer have to do with their eating attitudes. It is expected to contribute to clinical art therapy field to provide better treatment to the patients.

This study begins with the recognition that despite numerous cases of Korean women experiencing eating disorders, many do not receive a diagnosis within the medical system or drop out of treatment. The reason lies in the fact that the experiences acquired by Korean women with eating disorders during their illness are not treated as part of the physicality of medical practice. To address the physicality of Korean women's eating disorder medical practices, which are both mental disorders and chronic conditions, it is necessary to consider the materiality within hospital settings—such as spatiality—and the materiality of human and non-human actors. It should be possible to transform the management of daily life disease outside the clinic into a form of materiality within the clinic. However, handling the physicality within Korean women's eating disorder medical practice often faces high chances of failure due to the influence of femininity, manifested in specific elements such as feminine traumas and shame. Examining the physicality and femininity within Korean women's eating disorder medical practice reveals significant tensions between medical practice and the experiences of those individuals. This awareness presents an ongoing issue that requires nuanced discussions considering various contexts and scenarios of the individuals' experiences rather than seeking immediate solutions. To address this, the study proposes focusing on the enactment of illness through physical processes rather than dividing knowledge of illness into separate bodily and mental realms. Drawing on Annemarie Mol's theory of Body Multiple, based on experiences of those who have gone through illness, the study aims to enhance understanding of the practical reality of eating disorders as mental and chronic illnesses within Korean women's medical practice through an analysis of four four essays based on the firsthand experiences of the individuals. This study's arguments can be summarized into three main points. Firstly, like all other illnesses, eating disorders should be approached based on physicality to be effectively managed within the healthcare system. Eating disorders involve excessive or insufficient eating, sometimes accompanied by purging processes and resulting changes in body indices, emphasizing material aspects. Simultaneously, it is a mental disorder where capturing material elements is relatively difficult and also chronic conditions where managing disease in daily life outside of clinical settings is equally crucial. Addressing these material aspects within physicality in medical practice can improve the issues in eating disorder medical practices. Secondly, the element of femininity deeply influences the medical practices of Korean women with eating disorders, potentially leading to misunderstandings or marginalization of their experiences within medical practice. Femininity impacting eating disorder medical practices specifically manifests through traumas and shame, stemming from patriarchal suppression of women. These factors act as elements where the experiences of those affected may be misinterpreted or marginalized, especially in counseling processes crucial in eating disorder medical practices. Thirdly, to appropriately handle the tensions between eating disorder medical practices and the experiences of those affected, it is necessary to move beyond the perspectives of the individuals involved and view eating disorder medical practices in a multifaceted manner. Moving beyond the perspectives of those affected does not imply excluding their experiences and focusing solely on biomedical truths of the disease. Instead, it means moving away from competition among perspectives to ensure that the experiences of those involved are not marginalized within medical practice. This approach allows for open discussions on tensions such as recovery, suffering, disease identity, and others existing between eating disorder medical practices and the experiences of those affected.
