Vol.116 No.-
Cyborg has emerged as a new ontology and anthropology in the era of advanced science and technology. Cyborg is commonly understood through media and novels to refer to a mixed being that combines humans and machines. However, there are many different perspectives on cyborgs, and some of these perspectives accept cyborgs in a completely different sense, and perspectives are contrasted in opposition. However, interestingly, in common, the cyborg discourse reveals the light and dark sides of the era of advanced science and technology, while simultaneously dismantling the concept of ‘human’ as we have traditionally defined it. Representative examples include the cyborg discourse of transhumanism and posthumanism. Transhumanism is an ideological movement led by various classes of people who believe in cutting-edge science and technology. They define current humans as ‘transhumans’, or ‘cyborgs’, as a transitional stage of becoming ‘posthumans’. Posthumans are futuristic humans who upload their minds to computers and become immortal by achieving ‘de-embodiment’ and ‘de-cyborg’. Therefore, in transhumanism, cyborgs are set as an intermediate stage that appears in the process of technological advancement. However, contrary to transhumanism, which inherits modern enlightenment and expresses an optimistic understanding of science and technology, posthumanism proposes ‘post-human’, or cyborg, as the new human subject required in the ‘anthropocene’, which can be said to be the other side of the fourth industrial revolution-the era of advanced science and technology. They understand that global problems such as the current climate crisis, refugee issues, the gap between rich and poor, and discrimination against women are derived from the ‘modernity’ that drove scientific and technological civilization. For them, the posthuman, who overcomes the modern concept of human, is understood as a relational being who lives in a mutual and symbiotic way with animals, machines, and nature through the medium of ‘body’. Therefore, regardless of whether the term cyborg is appropriated positively or negatively, I note that the cyborg discourse of posthumanism suggests the possibility of a new anthropology required in the era of science and technology or the Anthropocene. Furthermore, I explain that the relational and ecological human understanding implied by in eco-theological anthropology has aspects that can criticize the cyborg discourse of transhumanism and at the same time accommodate the ecological aspects of the cyborg discourse of posthumanism. Lastly, I would like to suggest that the uniqueness and distinctiveness of humans, which is weakened by posthumanism’s cyborg humanism, can be reconstructed in a sufficiently post-anthropocentric way based on eco-theological anthropology.
Vol.55 No.-
This paper explores a Christian ethical response to the emergence of cyborgs, which combine humans and machines, due to advances in science and technology. A new humanism is needed to understand cyborgs, which emerge from interactions with non-human entities like machines. Machines are not merely instrumental beings that enhance human biological capabilities; they are ‘Others’ that enable ontological transformation by traversing boundaries and existing as relational subjects. This study defines posthuman subjects as becoming-cyborg, organic machines, and argues that the subjectivity of these cyborgs is completed through the act of hospitality toward various mechanical Others. The philosophical concepts of Emmanuel Levinas, who has thought about the Other, provide insight into the ethical characteristics of becoming-cyborg. Following Levinas’ philosophical thoughts, becoming-cyborg possesses the characteristics of extending the concept of the Other, living with and responsible for the Other. Examining the characteristics of becoming-cyborg through a Christian ethical lens reveals an ethics of hospitality. According to Miroslav Volf’s concept of hospitality, which the theology has defined as an ethical metaphor of embrace, becoming-cyborg manifests itself as a hospitality of coexistence that communicates with non-human entities, a symbiotic hospitality that lives together with otherness as an acting subject, and a just hospitality that responds responsibly to the appeal of others.

The SF genre shows the imagination of how the relationship between technology and human beings will develop. Particularly when cyborg is used as a material, it raises the theme consciousness about the difference between human and non-human. In this case, when there is a problem of gender, the discussion becomes more complicated. In this article, I tried to look at the subject consciousness of the cyborg woman who is the main character of Galli in the <Gunnm>, which was considered as one of the top 3 SF comics in Japan, and made into a movie <Alita: Battle Angel>. A cyborg woman warrior's body contains a dual meaning that it is difficult to combine with a weapon and women. In the case of Galli, she changes her body several times as if she is changing to a better weapon, but she continues to maintain her femininity nonetheless. I would like to pay attention to how the cyborg woman's body is expressed and how it relates to the identity of Galli. In the text, three questions were extracted with Donna Jeanne Haraway’s cyborg feminism theory for analysis. First, where did the Cyborg woman's body come from? Second, who controls the body? This question is about the relationship between the cyborg body and the world that makes up the body. Finally, how does Galli get out of control? This third question raises the question of how Galli acquires identity with the body of a cyborg woman. Galli is constantly fighting against it, even though she is controlled as Galatea and subject to sexual desire through the cyborg body. But it is through solidarity that she acquires a new human identity beyond the control of the cyborg world. I hope that this study will help us to study the imagination and narrative of the SF genre.
Vol.- No.41
This paper is a study of the changing nature of software for virtual Cyborg self and the virtual body that occur in the game from a philosophical point of view. Looking broadly, the cyborg concept refers to the combination of man and machine. Specifically, there is a hardware cyborg organism to combine human and restoration of machine In addition, there is software cyborg by electronic the human brain of converting a virtual body. Virtual games are cases software-Cyborg applied. In the game <untildawn>, There seems to have characteristics of virtual body and ego that different from general cyborg meaning. To analyze the features, I applied the concept of software-cyborg of Hans morabek and the multiple selves in cyberspace properties of Kim Sun-Hee. generally, software cyborg cloning the brain type tended to invalidate the body due to the nature of the virtual world. But If you look at third-person"s view and the game character that made from real actors, it is pursuing the realism of photographic images and it stressed the need for a virtual body in order to maintain the psychological identity of the player. And, The game player crosses the eight characters to choose while completing the mission. This is a big role in the reality ego leads to the desired final ending with the selection and experience to be experienced as self-replication to multiple. These cyber multi-ego looks for an active and positive features compared to the multi-ego in the real world and highlights the advantages of the software cyborg. Game <untildawn> The characteristics of the final result varies depending on the selection of the player. The life and death of a friend is determined by the relationship between the characters friendship. In this case, the virtual self is empirically through trial and error, moral, and try to select the desired setting the standard for intuitive and self own choice. Also It can be fused to the knowledge of multiple selves as one step is formed by a high spiritual introspection. This process is a positive interpretation of the world and their own forms of mental reflection through self-overcoming human, Nietzsche is said that the process is Wibeomenswi.
Vol.42 No.-
AI and robots are cutting-edge technologies that have triggered posthumanism. After the 2000s, artworks using AI and robots appeared into contemporary art, and simultaneously the identity of the human began to be re-questioned. In this background, the primary purpose of this study was mapping the posthumanism of Korean art. For examining posthumanism, the critical discourses of Braidotti, Hayles and Haraway’s are needed to examin first. That criticized the disembodiment supported by cybernetic posthumanism of Moravec in the 1990’s. In this study, the concept of cyborg and ‘situated knowledge’ are utilized for giving shape to posthumanism of Braidotti and Hayles. If ‘Situated knowledge’ would be partial and empirical knowledge against the totality and universality, then the cyborg could be the embodiment of ‘situated knowledge’. In particular, the ‘gynoid’ and the female cyborgs which represent the female body, are main objects in this study. Because, their given gender, regardless of reproductive function or efficiency, not only reveals anthropocentrism penetrating from humanism to cybernetics, but is also presented as a critical reconstruction of cybernetic posthumanism. The body of sex-differentiated machine also points out that the repression mechanism in cybernetic posthumanism, that is, the human mental dominates the body, and that the binary opposition between mental and body would be a repetition of the oppressive relationship that reveals in gender differences. Therefore, the genderd machine, such as a female cyborg or a gynoid, can be seen as a reference to both the subject/other of anthropocentrism and the critique of cybernetic posthumanism. In addition, this thesis compares artworks before and after the 2010s, when posthumanism was seriously discussed in Korean art. It shows the similarities and differences with the human identity. The sexuality of the gynoids and female cyborgs under anthropocentrism were unrelated to reproductive function, but related to such as sexual gaze or sexual impulse. Also, it showed that they were subordinate to humans. On the other hand, the gynoids and female cyborgs after the 2010s critically reconstructed the disembodiment of cybernetics. These machines include Noh Jin-ah’s Gynoid and Jeong Geum-hyung’s cyborgs. Their work could be explained as the constructed identity that threatens totality, universality, coherence, and unity, or as the existence of a hybrid and profane hybrid. These are also new beings that visualize the ‘vision of finite embodiment’, ‘vision of living within limits and contradictions’, and ‘seeing with translations and specific ways’.
Vol.- No.34
Among the abundance of post-human movies, cyborg girl characters, neither mature male nor mature female, stand out. It seems common that these characters primarily appear in the narratives about establishing self. I focus on how Ava, a cyborg girl/woman character in Ex Machina, could build her virtual-self in light of Freud"s and Lacan’s concepts of self and identity. Above all, based on Lacan’s theory of the mirror stage and the concept of screen, I analyze how the optical style in the seven Turing tests visualizes Ava"s subjectification. I also explain why Ava leaves Caleb behind when she gets out of Nathan’s research building by exploring the unique ontology of cyborg girls from the perspective of Haraway and her theory of ‘gender in a genderless world’.

In his book The Dada Cyborg, Matthew Biro argues that the cyborg played a central role in many important Dada productions in Berlin. From photomontage to envisioning the "New Man," the practices of the Berlin Dadaists are examined under the shadow of contemporary cyborg theories, particularly those of Donna J. Haraway. Biro's attempt to rediscover a constructive side of Berlin Dada by linking its practices to the notion of the cyborg has contributed a new scholarly approach to existing scholarship on Berlin Dada, which had previously been labeled as deconstructive and nihilistic. However, while he provides a comprehensive view of Dada practices under the notion of the cyborg, which is fully embedded within present-day complex social and cultural connotations, he fails to invite us to look at Dada's engagement with its own time and social practices. This paper, thus, will carefully analyze practices of Berlin Dadaists and contemporary performance artists (e.g., Orlan and Stelarc) to compare and contrast the notions of human identity represented in their practices. In particular, this paper examines Raoul Hausmann's notion of the New Man, as well as in photomontages made by Hanna Höch, and the ways in which they represent a modern man whose identity remains fragmented and conflicted rather than hybridized. The conflict that penetrates Berlin Dadaists' various practices reflects their condemnation of the Weimar Republic and the chaos of the post-war period. While contemporary cyborg theory regards the body as the third space in which differences are interlaced together to construct the idea of the self as in a perpetual state of becoming, the fragmented identity represented in Berlin Dada's practices hold on to the struggle between the self and the Other (e.g., social authority) as an integral part of constructing one's consciousness. The paper also addresses different attitudes toward technology in the Berlin Dadaists' practices and contemporary Cyborgian practices. Through these explorations, the study suggests that hybridity, which is represented in each practice, indeed embodies different perspectives on human identity that reflect certain ideologies of the artists' own time.

Mapping Posthuman body through Cyborg beings is a research project that examines the meaning of the posthuman through monster- like figures and cyborg beings, often used as symbolic representations of a cyborg in Korean performance art. The project manifests a critical view of transhumanism, which adheres to the same dichotomous division emphasized by humanism, and examines the posthuman being as “materially embodied, embedded in the environment, and intertwined with the world” as well as the ‘worlding-with’ method as a mode of posthuman existence. In particular, she turns to Donna Haraway's concept of the cyborg as the theoretical framework to explore how cyborg politics, which transcends the traditional, dichotomous thinking of the West and breaks down its boundaries, has developed within the trajectory of Korean art history. Research focuses on the bodies that get reconstructed at every moment within relationships by the act of blurring boundaries and suggests that we contemplate the meaning of our interactions with others and the sense of solidarity within the context of post- humanism in the post-COVID-19 era.

This paper aims to examine the problems of transhumanism, one of the major discourses in posthumanism, through examples. This article dealt with this issue through the story of the cyborgs of Kim Cho-Yeop, Kim Won-young, and Kevin Warwick. Warwick succeeded in becoming a cyborg on his own. Through the success of this experiment, he was optimistic about the future in which super humans will emerge. This superhuman is a representation of the modern rational human image with perfect order. Kim Cho-Yeop and Kim Won-young disagree with this technology optimism. They try to critically describe the reality behind the bright future presented by technological advancement. As the disabled, they are newly examining the cyborg discourse through related cases and their own experiences. In this paper, we examined the problems of technology accessibility and the science of promise that they posed.
