현대사회에서, 사람들을 즐겁게 하고 웃음을 자아내는 해학은 그 의미가 점차 증대되고 있다. 해학은 일상적인 의사소통을 위해서 매우 중요한 기능을 담당하고 있는 한편, 자기 자신의 삶을 되돌아보게 하는 요인이 되기도 한다. 해학은 한국인의 전통적인 심성과 깊은 관련이 있는 것으로, 한국문학에서도 전통적으로 중요한 요소로 자리잡고 있다. 우리의 선인들은 일상적 삶에서 체험하게 되는 해학을 문학 작품으로 승화시켰던 것이다. 현대문학에서도 해학은 중요한 요소로 자리잡고 있는 바, 김유정의 소설은 가장 특징적인 해학 작품으로 간주되어 왔다. 본고는 우리 현대문학에서 해학을 가장 특징적으로 그려내고 있는 김유정 소설을 분석하였다. 우선적으로 문학에서 나타나는 해학의 미학적 특징과 구현되는 요소에 대해 고찰하였다. 대체로 문학에 나타난 해학의 양상은 언어적 측면, 인물적 측면, 상황적 측면 등 세 가지 면에서 구체화됨을 밝혔다. 일상적 삶 속에서의 해학과 문학 작품에 구현된 해학은 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 문학 작품에 구현된 해학을 자기화 하는 것은 일상적 삶에서 긍정적 기능으로 작용할 수 있다. 이러한 논의를 전제로 하여 본고는 해학이 유발되는 원리와 김유정 소설에서 해학이 구현되고 있는 양상을 살펴보았다. 첫째로, 일상생활에서 웃음을 유발하는 가장 중요한 요인은 상대방에 대한 상대적 우월감, 즉 상대방의 열등함으로 인한 자기만족적인 우월감(self-satisfied superiority)으로서, 이를 웃음의 유발 원리 중 첫 번째에 해당하는 우월성 이론(superiority theory)으로 설명할 수 있다. 사람들은 자신이 다른 사람보다 우월하다는 것을 알게될 때 웃음을 느끼게 된다. 이는 대체로 열등한 인물로 인해 유발되는 웃음으로 김유정 소설에서 구현된 해학의 가장 특징적인 요인이기도 하다. 하지만 그의 소설에 나타난 해학은 단지 웃고 그치고 마는 것이 아니다. 열등한 인물의 비일상적인 행동을 통해 해학을 유발하지만 이는 상대적으로 우월한 지위를 차지하고 있는 인물의 부정성과 위선을 폭로하는 계기가 되고 있다. 김유정 소설에 나타난 인물들은 비일상적 행동을 자주 행하고 있으며, 또한 그 인물들은 상식적 상황을 비상식적으로 역전시키고 있으며, 스스로를 바보스럽게 만드는 방식으로 독자들로 하여금 웃음을 유발하는 것이다. 둘째로, 일상 생활에서 웃음을 유발하는 요인으로 말하는 사람(화자 혹은 작가)과 듣는 사람(청자 혹은 독자)이 상식적으로 합의한 것을 함께 깨뜨림으로써 웃음을 자아내게 된다. 이는 부조화 이론(incongruity theory)으로 설명될 수 있다. 김유정은 지식층이나 상류 계층이 주로 구독하는 잡지에서 하층민들이 사용하는 비속어를 많이 사용한 문학 작품을 발표하였다 이는 고상한 성향을 갖고 있는 독자들의 기대를 배반하는 '부조화의 효과'를 보고 있는 것이다. 일반적으로 김유정 작품의 해학성을 가장 잘 드러낸 것으로서 다양한 계층의 언어를 사용하고 있다는 점이 지적되고 있다. 실제로 그의 작품에는 많은 비속어와 고유어 등이 구사되고 있는 바, 이것은 언어에 의해 유발되는 해학이라고 할 수 있다. 김유정의 문학 작품이 언어적 측면에서는 여러 계층이 사용하는 문체를 사용했다는 점, 조야한 어휘를 세련화 시켰다는 점, 그리고 토속적 고유어를 자유롭게 구사함으로써 독자들로 하여금 웃음을 유발하게 되는 점등이 있다. 마지막으로 웃음을 유발하는 요인 중의 하나로, 앞으로 일어날 일에 대해서 긴장하고 있다가 예기치 않게 긴장이 해소됨으로써 웃음이 발생한다고 하는 것을 들 수 있다. 이는 이완 이론(relief theory)으로 설명될 수 있다. 일반적으로 문학작품 속의 주인공이 겪게 되는 상황은 일상적인 상식을 벗어나는 것들인 경우가 많다. 그래서 독자들은 인물들 사이에서 벌어지게 될 사태를 조심스럽게 지켜보다가 결말이 의외의 방향으로 맞이하게 되면서 웃음을 터뜨리게 된다. 이것은 인물과 언어의 해학성 못지 않게 중요한 요인이다. 이를 상황에 의한 해학성이라고 할 수 있는데, 김유정의 소설에 이러한 면이 두드러진다. 김유정의 작품은 긴장과 이완을 반복하고, 또한 계층 사이의 갈등을 고조시키면서 한편으로는 이를 희화화시키고 있다. 그러면서도 김유정은 당시의 비참한 현실을 고발하면서, 한편으로는 인물 사이의 화해를 지향하게 되는데 이 과정에서 독자들은 해학을 체험하게 된다. 위와 같은 연구 결과를 바탕으로 하여, 본고는 해학이 시대 현실에 대해 간접적으로 인식할 수 있게 해주고, 전통적 언어문화를 긍정적으로 수용하고 있으며 또한 자기 구원의 방법을 통해 갈등을 치유하고 마지막으로 소박한 민중의 건강한 낙관성과 의지를 수용하고 있다는 점을 부각시켰다. When we reflect humor within own usual life, humor can become the new vitality of our life. This paper analyzed Kimyujeong's novel that have been embodied humor diagnostic in our current literature.
