In this study, sound sources found in the albums of "Gwanakyeongsanhoesang Sangryeongsan and Sujaecheon" were compared in order to examine the changes in piri, daegeum, and janggu techniques, and changes in sigimsae of piri tunes in different times, and the tempos were compared to analyze the breathing tempo of Gwanakyeongsanhoesang Sangryeongsan and Sujaecheon based on piri melody and rhythms. Jung-mu, the piri melody that appears regularly on the first beat and middle of each line of Gwangakyeongsanhoesang Sangryeongsan, and Im-mu, which is played briefly in the last melody and between each lines of daegeum yeoneum, remain constant and their organic relationship has an important effect on the breathing tempo of Gwanakyeongsanhoesang Sangryeongsan. And, the same piri melody is repeated and maintains the breathing tempo within the overall frame of the music, while the breathing tempo of daegeum yeoneum, which is played consistently in the last part, is another important element in Gwanakyeongsanhoesang Sangryeongsan. In Sujaecheon, Nam-tae, Im-go, and Im-hwang melodies played on the first beat of each line, and the tempo of daegeum yeoneum played in the last part of each rhythm remain constant, has an important effect on the breathing tempo of Sujaecheon. And, in Sujaecheon, another important element of the melody tempo is a yoseong of Namryeo, Goseon, and Taejok, and, although speed of yoseong for these notes vary in different albums, in each alubm, the yoseong of a note progresses regularly in each line and rhythm, and has an important effect on the melodic breathing tempo. In recent performances, the janggu rhythm is played on the first beat of each daegang in '6.4.4.6' of Gwangakyeongsanhoesang Sangryeongsan and first beat of each daegang in '6.3.3.6' of Sujaecheon, along with the tempo of piri melody, and plays the first beat of each daegang, i.e., major points of the overall music. However, in recent sound sources of Gwangakyeongsanhoesang Sangryeongsan, instead of following the basic ‘6.4.4.6’ frame or following the piri melody, the janggu rhythm: ① appears in the middle of the piri melody and prepares for the following melody; and, ② is played with the melody of another instrument, for preparation of the piri melody. And janggu rhythm helps prepare for the following breathing tempo, which suggests that janggu used to play more diverse and complex roles than it does now, before the recent SKC. In Sujaecheon, also, janggu rhythm is progressed with the piri melody in recent performance, and marks important points of each line in ‘6.3.3.6’ and plays an important role in creating unity of the overall music. However, in sound sources before the first recent SKC gukak album, janggu rhythm is played at substantially different points from recent. Although 'gideok' and 'kung' in the first rhythm of each line, in the middle, the points at which ‘gideok’, ‘kung’, and ‘deong deoreoreoreo' are played are different from recent, playing an important role in the breathing tempof o the overall melody. And, as janggu rhythm follows the piri melody, it has an effect on the breathing tempo of the following melody and unity in breathing of other instruments. Gwanakyeongsanhoesang Sangryeongsan and Sujaecheon music that feature irregular tempos of different instruments, have changed in recent versions to somewhat united tempos based on ‘6.4.4.6’, and ‘6.3.3.6,‘ but sound sources such as Ahakjeongsu of Wangjik Lee, Gukakwon Ahak, John Levy Collection, and Banggwangmun data show variability of the breathing tempo and flexibility in melodies in rhythms, in comparison to recent versions. As the breathing tempo and janggu rhythm are important elements in Gwanakyeongsanhoesang Sangryeongsan and Sujaecheon, I hope this study will help understand the breathing tempo of the meoldies and melodic changes of different instruments, and improve performance of the two pieces of music in the future. <Keywords> : Gwanakyeongsanhoesang, Sangryeongsan, Sujaecheon, breathing tempo, piri melody, sigimsae, janggu rhythm, daegeum yeoneum, ahak jeongsu, banggwangmun, John Levi Collection, recent SKC
This study aims to examine the specific changes in the transmission process of Jungnyeongsan from Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang. For this purpose, the study set its scope of analysis to Kim Gi-su‘s transcription Pyojeong Manbang Jigok Daegeum Bo published by the Yiwangjik Aakbu in 1939, and the National Gugak Center’s Daegeum Jeongak Bo, published in 2016, examining approximately 77 years of musical change. For comparative analysis, the key-signature system of the Aak-bo was transposed to the Hwangjong standard, and the dotted quarter note reflecting the triple subdivision was set as the reference beat, transcribed into staff notation of four measures with a 6·4·4·6 Daegang division, thereby establishing the foundation for objective comparative research. Through comparative analysis of the skeletal melodies of the two sources after transposition and transcription, three principal causes of divergence were identified. First, melodic expansion through the addition of skeletal tones. Patterns appearing primarily at the opening of each movement add skeletal tones to increase the density of the melodic structure, and the Im-Jung-Im pattern in beats 13–15 is identified as a leaping melodic variation designed to effectively emphasize the Tteo-i-eo ornament on beat 15, the strong beat of the Jangdan. Second, melodic condensation through Junbak. While the essential melodic content remains the same, the position of skeletal tones shifts by one beat unit according to the breath and Jangdan unit of actual performance. Third, melodic reconstruction. When the surrounding melody and ornaments are examined comprehensively, cases where the pitch progression itself differs entirely demonstrate that the melody of the Daegeum Bo was independently reconstructed during the transmission process. An examination of the skeletal melody concordance rate by movement revealed that the first (75.0%) and fifth (77.5%) movements preserved the original form most substantially, while the fourth movement (53.8%) showed the most pronounced independent melodic reconstruction. The overall average concordance rate of approximately 70% serves as an indicator of continuity in transmission between the two scores, while the approximately 30% of points of variation demonstrates that Jeongak is not a fixed and immutable music, but has flexibly evolved in accordance with actual performance practice. Regarding the ornamental notation, the total frequency of Sigimsae, tempo markings, and performance techniques recorded in the scores was 140 instances in the Aak-bo and 274 in the Daegeum Bo, indicating that the notational density of Sigimsae in the Daegeum Bo approximately doubled. The frequency of Tteo-i-eo increased markedly, while the Teukgang marks present in the Aak-bo are entirely absent in the Daegeum Bo, demonstrating that the same intention of emphasizing a tone has been realized through different means of expression depending on the era and notational system. Finally, an examination of the melodic scale characteristics confirmed that the Aak-bo employs a pentatonic scale of Hwang-Tae-Jung-Im-Mu, while the current Daegeum Bo adopts a scale structure of Hwang-Hyeop-Jung-Im-Mu, in which Hyeopjong (夾) appears in place of Taeju(太). This reflects the historical changes that the Gyemyeonjo mode of Jeongak has undergone, including the disappearance and replacement of constituent tones, and the Hwang-Tae-Jung-Im-Mu structure of the Aak-bo is interpreted as a transitional form predating the standardization of the Gyemyeonjo scale. In conclusion, this study has examined the notational system and transmission history of the Daegeum melody of Jungnyeongsan from Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang through the medium of musical scores, and holds significance in that it simultaneously illuminates both the continuity and the transformation of Jeongak transmission.
In Korean traditional music, there is instrumental piece representing Poongryu music. That is 3 types of Youngsan Hoisang including 'Hyeonak Youngsan Hoisang', 'Pyeongjo Hoisang', 'Gwanak Youngsan Hoisang'. Where, Hyeonak Youngsan Hoisang also goes by the name of Joonggwangji-gok, Geomungo Hoisang, Joolpoongryu and Pyeongjo Hoisang that is 4 degree lower than Hyeonak Youngsan Hoisang also goes by the name of Yoocho Shinjo-gok. And in Hyeonak Youngsanhoisang, there is Gwanak Youngsanhoisang, a wind instrument based wind ensemble, in which 'Hahyeon Dodeuri' was omitted between Samhyeon Dodeuri and Yeombul Dodeuri and it is also called as Samhyeon Youngsan Hoisang or Pyojeong Manbangji-gok, Daepoongryu. It was learned that the title of Pyojeong Manbangji-gok is artistic name of ''Hyangdang Gyoju" having been played as ceremonial court music and Jeongjae accompanying music at the time of Gyobangsa in Daehan Jeguk (1897-1910). Musical instrument is organized by Samhyeon Yookgak, that is, Piri (pipe) 2, Daegeum 1, Haegeum 1, Janggu 1 (Korean traditional drum), Joago 1. Musical tune mode is a kind of suite being composed in the order of Sangyoungsan-Joongyoungsan-Seryeongsan-Garakdeoli-Samhyeon Dodeuri-Yeombul Dodeuri-Taryeong-Gunak and where, Samhyeon Dodeuri, Yeombul Dodeuri, Taryeong, Gunak are also separately called as Hamryeongji-gok. Musical characteristics of Gwanak Youngsanhoisang is that first, as it is played by free rhythm unique to wind instrument even though beating frequency of each rhythm Janggoo is constant, required time of every rhythm is not constant and irregular. Second, it is composed of lengthened sound mode in which when Piri playing main melody finishes one beat, Daegeum, Haegeum, Ajaeng melody is continued. Third, over-octave sound (Cheong-seong), that is, high tone is frequently appeared and in case of wind ensemble, it is noteworthy that if Janggoo beating played with irregular, free rhythm was played by dance accompanying music, its beating was changed to regular one. Therefore, in this study, Lee, Wang-Jik Aakbu <Daegeum Akbo(musical note)>, <Korean music> Vol. 8, <Oseon Akbo> compiled by Kim, Gi-Soo that is most frequently played at present and Daegeum solo sound source of Kim, Sung-Jin (national intangible cultural heritage No. 20) being possessed by National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage was comparatively analyzed by targeting Daegeum melody of Samhyeon Dodeuri, Yeombul Dodeuri, Taryeong, Gunak in Gwanak Youngsan Hoisang. Furthermore, number, type of Janggoo beat and melody of three musical notes were observed and as Lee, Wang-Jik Akakbu <Daegeum Akbo> was lowered by Dan3 degree, Daegeum melody was comparatively analyzed by raising Dan3 degree based on music score mode of <Korean music> Vol. 8 <Oseon akbo> compiled by Kim, Gi-Soo that is most frequently played at present.
Kwanak Yeongsan Hoesang is a representative traditional instrumental music inherited by Korean Traditional Performing Art Center. On the other hand, Minkan Dae Pungnyu collected by Ji Yeong Hee is classified into the Kwanak Yeongsan Hoesang in spite of the musical differences between Minkan Dae Pungnyu and Kwanak Yeongsan Hoesang. There have been many studies about Minkan Pungnyu inherited not by the Korean Traditional Performing Art Center but by tradition. However, they have been only for the comparison of Hyunak Yeongsan Hoesang with Zul Pungnyu. Moreover, the studies about the comparison of Kwanak Yeongsan Hoesang with Minkan Dae Pungnyu have been only about the Pi-ri. In this paper, some structural comparisons of Kwanak Yeongsan Hoesang by Korean Traditional Performing Art Center with Minkan Dae Pungnyu collected by Ji Yeong Hee, about sections, movements and rhythms were carried out. Also analyses of the melody according to the use of Sikim-Sae, repetitive melody, and detailed melody were also carried out. For the convenient analysis, the melody of the Minkan Dae Pungnyu has been transposed to major 2nd compared with E♭ of the Kwanak Yeongsan Hoesang. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, whole structure and rhythmic pattern of chang-go are almost same each other except for some trivial differences. Minkan Dae Pungnyu has more fractions of sections and rhythms. Both pieces are almost similar in point of the kind and the frequency of the Sikim-Sae. The repetitive melody of the Minkan Dae Pungnyu can be divided by various parts. On the contrary, Kwanak Yeongsan Hoesang has a perfectly repetitive melody. Generally, both pieces are alike in the melody, however, they has some trivial differences, for example, the number of fractions, sequence of the melody and the use of Hwal-Dae and commas.
Music, as an art that changes and is transmitted across different eras and regions, requires careful examination through diverse sources to understand its characteristics in detail. In particular, a systematic analysis of notation and performance aspects provides an essential academic foundation for a deeper understanding of both historical and contemporary music. Such a study not only enriches contemporary musical expression but also serves as a stepping stone for exploring the future possibilities of traditional music. This study provides a multifaceted examination of the notation and performance aspects of 《Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang》 through musical scores and audio recordings from the National Gugak Center lineage. Four types of jeongganbo notation, seven ensemble recordings from the National Gugak Center, and four solo haegeum recordings by performers within the Center’s lineage were compared and analyzed. Based on these sources, the research investigated notation and performance aspects with a focus on the haegeum melody. The principal findings are as follows: First, to investigate the notation aspects of 《Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang》, four scores from the National Gugak Center lineage were analyzed in terms of piece titles and sectional structures, tempo, rhythmic cycles(jangdan), haegeum melody, and musical ornamentation(sigimsae). The analysis indicates a progressive increase in informational detail within the scores, accompanied by a narrowing of discrepancies between notation and actual performance practices. This development may be understood as reflecting the growing emphasis on the authority of notation and musical documentation, as well as an effort to systematize musical practice. Second, to investigate the performance aspects of 《Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang》, seven ensemble recordings were examined by considering their durations and calculating the tempo of each piece. In addition, four solo haegeum recordings were transcribed and compared in terms of melodic structure and ornamentation. The ensemble recordings indicated a gradual tendency toward slower tempos over time. Comparative analysis of the haegeum melodies demonstrated that the skeletal melodic framework among the four performers was highly consistent. Nevertheless, in pieces such as 〈Jungnyeongsan〉, 〈Seryeongsan〉, 〈Garakdeori〉, 〈Yeombuldodeuri〉, and 〈Taryeong〉, while 「Yang Kyeongsuk」, 「Byeon Jonghyuk」, and 「Ko Sooyoung」 consistently rendered certain tones with ‘Hyeop(夾)’, 「Kim Cheonheung」 employed ‘Tae(太)’ instead. Furthermore, 「Kim Cheonheung」, the earliest performer among them, exhibited a distinctive style characterized by a frequent addition of ornamental tones and relatively limited use of chuseong(a gradual pitch raising technique)/toeseong(a gradual pitch lowering technique) compared to later performers. Third, to investigate the aspects of chuseong and toeseong in 《Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang》, theoretical treatises and related sources were consulted, which generally identify the mode of the piece as gyemyeonjo. Previous research by Jang Sahun, Im Byeongok, and Kim Jeongseung confirmed that in jeongak pieces in gyemyeonjo, performers consistently apply toeseong when descending from the second degree(Tae(太), Hyeop(夾)) and the fourth degree(Yim(林)). Based on this analysis, the study classified toeseong at these degrees as conventional expressions, while other applications were regarded as distinctive. The analysis revealed that both notation and performance consistently employed toeseong at the second degree(Tae(太), Hyeop(夾)), occasionally incorporating chuseong or toechuseong depending on the melodic context, while the fourth degree(Yim(林)) was expressed exclusively with toeseong. Beyond these cases, variations in chuseong and toeseong reflected natural melodic connections, musical expression, and the structural characteristics of the haegeum, which alternates between yuhyeon and junghyeon strings. These variations underscore the interpretive individuality of each performer. This study examines the notation and performance aspects of 《Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang》 with a focus on the haegeum melody. By tracing its transformations, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of the repertoire and anticipates that the graceful melodic lines of 《Gwanak Yeongsanhoesang》 will continue to be enriched with diverse artistic expressions, thereby ensuring its active performance and transmission in the future.

Samhyeon Yukgak in Seoul is an intangible cultural heritage designated as Seoul Metropolitan Government Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 44 on May 15, 2014. Samhyeon Yukgak is composed of two Piri, one Haegeum, one Daegeum, one Janggu, and one Buk, and the Piri is recognized and designated as holders of Choi Kyung-man, Haegeum Kim Moo-kyung, and Daegeum Lee Cheol-ju, and three pieces of music are handed down: Gwanak Yeongsan Hoisang, Yeombulpungryu, and Chwita Pungryu. I recorded seven pieces of music from Daeyeongsan to Byeolgok Taryeong in <Gwanak Yeongsan Hoisang> played by Kim Moo-kyung, and used them as analysis targets to closely examine the composition of phrases and rhythms, and found the following conclusions. First, there is a characteristic that changes from dividing the first beat into two to three. Daeyeongsan, Jungyeongsan, Jusuyeongsan, Samhyeon Dodri, and Yeombul Dodri are divided into two beats, while Samhyeon Taryeong and Byeolgok Taryeong are divided into three beats. It can be said that it suddenly changed from Samhyeon Taryeong to some people, but it is the result of a gradual or amplified beat in Samhyeon Dodri and Yeombuldodri. Second, there are many repetitions, but there is no boredom due to repetitions. In Daeyeongsan, the same pitch always comes out and the melody at the end of each chapter comes out, except in special cases at the beginning and end of each chapter, and the melody at the end of each chapter comes out the same. Jungyeongsan does not seem to have been largely repeated, but if you look at the melody, it is inherent in repetition. Jusuyeongsan is progressing from the beginning to the reduction of Jungyeongsan Mountain, and there is the same melody at the end of each chapter. Samhyeon Dodri has the same two and seven chapters, and the same melody comes out at the end of the other chapters except for the two chapters. Yeombuldori has the same motive in each chapter, and it is largely the same from chapter 4 to the end of Samhyeon Dodri and from chapter 4 to the end of Yeombuldori. In addition, there is a big repetition, and one verse of Samhyeon Dodri is used twice in Yeombuldodori in the same form. Samhyeon Taryeong has repetitions in each chapter. In Byeolgok Taryeong, the same part appears symmetrically in Chapter 3, and Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 have a slight difference in length, but Chapter 1 is repeated almost the same at the end of Chapter 4. It is not boring even though it is composed of so many repetitions. In particular, in Chapter 3 of Yeombuldori, it can be seen that repetition brings diversity as it has various compositions in which major, minor, and score change while repeating one motive. Third, the score changes. Many Korean traditional music thinks that the score does not change, but the score changes at the Gwanak Yeongsan Hoisang. This feature may be essential for our traditional music, which is melodic music. The songs that change the score in the music are Jungyeongsan, Jusuyeongsan, Yeombuldodri, and Samhyeon Taryeong, and Byeolgok Taryeong is played with completely different scores from the songs in front of Byeolgok Taryeong. Fourth, use the 'fa' pitch. It is said that our traditional music does not use the "fa" pitch, but all but Samhyeon Dodri comes out of the "fa" pitch in the "Gwanak Yeongsan Hoisang" I wrote. However, this 'fa' pitch plays a very important role. Once the "fa" pitch comes out in each piece, it becomes unstable, and there are many cases where the melody is composed to make this unstable state a stable state. In particular, the last pitch of Byeolgok Taryeong, the last song of "Gwanak Yeongsan Hoisang," is the "fa" note. Of course, it would be reasonable to finish stably if such a long song was played, but the "fa" pitch was used. There will be various free thoughts of people about this. In my opinion, the unstable 'fa' pitch makes me infer that there may be Sun-hyun's desire to say more of the following things, to continue playing, or to continue the next generation. As mentioned above, it can be seen that "Gwanak Yeongsan Hoisang" is a melody music with a systematic and solid composition by recording the Haegeum melody of "Gwanak Yeongsan Hoisang" and analyzing its melody.

This study intends to examine cadence types of melodies of Gwanak-Yeongsanhoesang in Gyeonggi- Samhyeonyukgak and the National Gugak Center and investigate differences in cadence melodies and their relation with division of a movement in two pieces. Through the research on cadence types of melodies, it considers changes of the music caused by those of the subject of transmission, which was originated from the tradition of Saeaksu(military musicians). Firstly, In case of Gyeonggi-Samhyeonyukgak and the National Gugak Center Gwanak-Yeongsanhoesang, as for the cadence types of melodies, the most frequent one is the Perfect 4t ascending cadence of E♭– A♭, and such a melodic motion comes to be extended as it goes on so cadence types of melodies show diversified aspects. As for Gyeonggi-Samhyeonyukgak, it may be summarized to ① E♭- A♭② E♭- A♭- G♭③ E♭- A♭- B♭- G♭④ E♭- A♭- B♭′- E♭ and as for the National Gugak Center it may be summarized to ① E♭- A♭② E♭- A♭- G♭③ E♭- A♭- G♭-E♭. Secondly, following Samhyeon Dodeuri, both pieces show various kinds of cadence melodies and those that appeared more than twice were categorized into others. Cadence melodies of Gyeonggi-Samhyeonyukgak include ① d♭- B♭- d♭– G♭, ② A♭- B♭, ③ C – F - B♭– E♭, ④ E♭– F - B♭– E♭and those of the National Gugak Center include ① B♭ – G♭, ② B♭- A♭- F / B♭- A♭ ③ F – B♭. Thirdly, as a result of comparing cadence melodies of Gwanak-Yeongsanhoesang for Gyeonggi-Samhyeon and the National Gugak Center, it showed a variety of cadence melodies depending on kinds of the piece for Gyeonggi-Samhyeon and certain fixed or simple ones for the National Gugak Center. Fourthly, in general a single piece has about two types of cadence melodies rather than only one. As a result of analyzing the relation between cadence melodies and division of a movement in both pieces, division was done based on certain cadence melodies in pieces except for Samhyeon Taryeong so there existed regularities between cadence type and division of a movement. Fifthly, the study found out the characteristics of division of a movement in both pieces as follows. ⅰ Gyeonggi-Samhyeon has more segmented division than that of the National Gugak Center. ⅱ In Gyeonggi-Samhyeon, a melody that plays a role of Doljang is divided into a single movement. ⅲ Compared to those of the National Gugak Center, Gyeonggi-Samhyeon Dodeuri has more frequent division of a movement and various cadence melodies by dividing high pitched melodies into intro melodies of the movement. ⅳ The research identified that Byeolgok Taryeong of Gyeonggi-Samhyeon and Gunak of the National Gugak Center have criteria of division different to each other. While high pitched melodies act as intro melodies of the movement in Byeolgok Taryeong, they play a role of cadence melodies in Gunak. As such, the paper researched and compared cadence melodies of Gwanak-Yeongsanhoesang for Gyeonggi-Samhyeonyukgak and the National Gugak Center. Hence, in both pieces, it could figure out changes of the cadence melodies and their relation with division of a movement. Such findings show a characteristic of oral tradition music and in terms of performance the diversity of versions means an advantage in enriching the music world. 이를 정리하면 경기 삼현육각은 ① E♭- A♭② E♭- A♭- G♭③ E♭- A♭- B♭- G♭④ E♭- A♭- B♭′- E♭ 등이며, 국악원의 경우 ① E♭- A♭② E♭- A♭- G♭③ E♭- A♭- G♭- E♭ 등이다. 경기 삼현육각은 ① d♭- B♭- d♭– G♭, ② A♭- B♭, ③ C – F - B♭– E♭, ④ E♭– F - B♭– E♭ 등이며, 국악원의 경우 ① B♭ – G♭, ② B♭- A♭- F / B♭- A♭ ③ F – B♭등이다.
