This study intends to examine cadence types of melodies of Gwanak-Yeongsanhoesang in Gyeonggi- Samhyeonyukgak and the National Gugak Center and investigate differences in cadence melodies and their relation with division of a movement in two pieces. Through the research on cadence types of melodies, it considers changes of the music caused by those of the subject of transmission, which was originated from the tradition of Saeaksu(military musicians). Firstly, In case of Gyeonggi-Samhyeonyukgak and the National Gugak Center Gwanak-Yeongsanhoesang, as for the cadence types of melodies, the most frequent one is the Perfect 4t ascending cadence of E♭– A♭, and such a melodic motion comes to be extended as it goes on so cadence types of melodies show diversified aspects. As for Gyeonggi-Samhyeonyukgak, it may be summarized to ① E♭- A♭② E♭- A♭- G♭③ E♭- A♭- B♭- G♭④ E♭- A♭- B♭′- E♭ and as for the National Gugak Center it may be summarized to ① E♭- A♭② E♭- A♭- G♭③ E♭- A♭- G♭-E♭. Secondly, following Samhyeon Dodeuri, both pieces show various kinds of cadence melodies and those that appeared more than twice were categorized into others. Cadence melodies of Gyeonggi-Samhyeonyukgak include ① d♭- B♭- d♭– G♭, ② A♭- B♭, ③ C – F - B♭– E♭, ④ E♭– F - B♭– E♭and those of the National Gugak Center include ① B♭ – G♭, ② B♭- A♭- F / B♭- A♭ ③ F – B♭. Thirdly, as a result of comparing cadence melodies of Gwanak-Yeongsanhoesang for Gyeonggi-Samhyeon and the National Gugak Center, it showed a variety of cadence melodies depending on kinds of the piece for Gyeonggi-Samhyeon and certain fixed or simple ones for the National Gugak Center. Fourthly, in general a single piece has about two types of cadence melodies rather than only one. As a result of analyzing the relation between cadence melodies and division of a movement in both pieces, division was done based on certain cadence melodies in pieces except for Samhyeon Taryeong so there existed regularities between cadence type and division of a movement. Fifthly, the study found out the characteristics of division of a movement in both pieces as follows. ⅰ Gyeonggi-Samhyeon has more segmented division than that of the National Gugak Center. ⅱ In Gyeonggi-Samhyeon, a melody that plays a role of Doljang is divided into a single movement. ⅲ Compared to those of the National Gugak Center, Gyeonggi-Samhyeon Dodeuri has more frequent division of a movement and various cadence melodies by dividing high pitched melodies into intro melodies of the movement. ⅳ The research identified that Byeolgok Taryeong of Gyeonggi-Samhyeon and Gunak of the National Gugak Center have criteria of division different to each other. While high pitched melodies act as intro melodies of the movement in Byeolgok Taryeong, they play a role of cadence melodies in Gunak. As such, the paper researched and compared cadence melodies of Gwanak-Yeongsanhoesang for Gyeonggi-Samhyeonyukgak and the National Gugak Center. Hence, in both pieces, it could figure out changes of the cadence melodies and their relation with division of a movement. Such findings show a characteristic of oral tradition music and in terms of performance the diversity of versions means an advantage in enriching the music world. 이를 정리하면 경기 삼현육각은 ① E♭- A♭② E♭- A♭- G♭③ E♭- A♭- B♭- G♭④ E♭- A♭- B♭′- E♭ 등이며, 국악원의 경우 ① E♭- A♭② E♭- A♭- G♭③ E♭- A♭- G♭- E♭ 등이다. 경기 삼현육각은 ① d♭- B♭- d♭– G♭, ② A♭- B♭, ③ C – F - B♭– E♭, ④ E♭– F - B♭– E♭ 등이며, 국악원의 경우 ① B♭ – G♭, ② B♭- A♭- F / B♭- A♭ ③ F – B♭등이다.

SamhyeonYukgak, which once flourished with distinct regional characteristics, faced the risk of decline or discontinuation during the modernization process. However, as regional preservation societies were established and the tradition was designated as intangible cultural heritage, the next generation of performers has continued to carry on its legacy. Despite this, existing research remains heavily concentrated on earlier generations of performers or on the central regions of Seoul and Gyeonggi, with most studies focusing primarily on the piri melodies. Therefore, this study centers on the daegeum melodies—an essential melodic axis of Sam-hyeon Yuk-gak that enriches its artistic expression through distinctive sikimsae—and examines the currently transmitted forms of Sam-hyeon Yuk-gak in the Gyeonggi, Tongyeong, Jeolla, and Haeju regions. First of all, the musical characteristics of the melody of the SamhyeonYukgak daegeum in each region are as follows. First, the Yeombul pungnyu of the Gyeonggi-region Samhyeon- Yukgak transmitted by Ji Young Hui consists of nine movements. Ginyeombul and Banyeombul each contain three sections, Samhyeon Taryeong consists of a single section divided into two subsections, and Neurin Heotteun Taryeong, Jajin Heotteun Taryeong, Gutgeori, Jajin Gutgeori, and Dangak are divided into two to four subsections without formal sectional divisions. Among the melodic patterns, Dangak features the greatest variety with four types; Samhyeon Taryeong, Gutgeori, and Jajin Gutgeori each have three types, and the remaining pieces have two. The modality is categorized into three systems: Yeombul-jo, Heotteun Taryeong-jo, and Dangak-jo. Second, the Tongyeong SamhyeonYukgak of the Yeongnam region consists of six movements. Yeombul is divided into a preliminary tone plus three sections, while Banyeombul and Samhyeon have no sectional or phrase divisions. Taryeong consists of three sections and, with a total of 52 rhythmic cycles, is the longest movement. Jajin Taryeong is divided into three subsections, and Gutgeori into two. Only Gutgeori has two melodic types, while the other pieces show three. The taryeong genre is characterized by repeated opening and cadential patterns interspersed with irregular variations. All pieces use the pitch set re–mi–sol–la–do, belonging to the Yeombul-jo system, identical to that of the Gyeonggi Yeombul and Gutgeori traditions. However, pitch functions differ by piece: re is treated with vibrato (nong), mi, la, and do with toeseong (falling tones), and sol functions as the main pitch with pyeongseong or light vibrato, resembling the pyeongjo idiom of pansori. In Jajin Taryeong, a characteristic shift from D♭ to C appears, indicating a gyemyeonjo-like gesture. Third, the Jeolla-region Samhyeon Yukgak consists of six movements. Yeombul and Gutgeori each have three sections; Neujeun Taryeong has two subsections; Jajin Taryeong has three; and Banyeombul has no sectional divisions. Banyeombul contains the greatest variety with three melodic types, while the other pieces each have two. Notably, Jajin Taryeong shows repetitive cadential melodic patterns. The scale used is sol–la–do–re–mi, where sol typically employs vibrato, la and re use toeseong, and the principal pitch do is performed with pyeongseong or light nong. These features resemble those of the Gyeonggi Samhyeon Yukgak, suggesting shared expressive practices between the two regions. Fourth, the Haeju SamhyeonYukgak of the Hae(seo) region consists of five movements, and all pieces form subsections according to their melodic beginnings and endings rather than formal divisions. Yeombul comprises a continuous five-cycle phrase without subdivisions; Taryeong Sinawi consists of four subsections; Neut Taryeong three; Jajin Taryeong two; and Gutgeori three. Jajin Taryeong shows the greatest variety with four melodic types, Neut Taryeong has three, and Yeombul, Taryeong Sinawi, and Gutgeori each have two. The taryeong genre shows similar opening and cadential structures across pieces. All pieces use the sol–la–do–re–mi scale, with occasional fa functioning as a passing tone rather than a structural pitch. The sikimsae is characterized by vibrato on sol, mixed vibrato and toeseong on la, and strongly raised, wide vibrato on do and sol, traits associated with the Seodo vocal tradition, demonstrating strong regional identity. Next, the comparative analysis of daegeum melodies among the regional SamhyeonYukgak traditions reveals the following: First, movement structure and sectional organization vary according to regional performance practice.Second, although all regions share the basic Gyeonggi rhythmic framework, tempo differs across regions, and the traditional “left-hand jangdan” found in older Yeombul traditions is absent in all current practices.Third, none of the melodic materials are identical across the four regions; instead, similar melodic types appear in modified forms. Melodies may contract or expand at specific points, rhythms may vary, and differences in passing tones contribute to distinct regional identities.Fourth, differences in scale and sikimsae are the most pronounced regional markers. Gyeonggi employs Yeombul-jo, Heotteun Taryeong-jo, and Dangak-jo, with occasional Seodo-style upward nong. Tongyeong uses the re–mi–sol–la–do scale throughout, with pansori pyeongjo-like nong and toeseong. Jeolla and Haeju both use the sol–la–do–re–mi scale, but Jeolla exhibits sikimsae similar to Gyeonggi, whereas Haeju shows strong Seodo-style characteristics, including wide vibrato and raised tones derived from the Susimga tradition. In conclusion, this study conducted a multifaceted analysis of the musical characteristics of daegeum melodies in the Gyeonggi, Yeongnam, Honam, and Haeseo traditions of Samhyeon Yukgak, thereby illuminating both regional interconnections and distinctive local identities. The significance of this research lies in its comparative examination of the daegeum—an instrument that plays an indispensable musical role in shaping the identity of Samhyeon Yukgak—thus enabling a deeper understanding of the ensemble’s fundamental nature. It is hoped that this study will serve as a modest stepping stone toward fostering creative continuity through cross-regional reinterpretation and reconfiguration of Samhyeon Yukgak in contemporary performance practice.
