Enhanced detection of broadband incoherent light with nanoridge plasmonics
Emerging photonic integrated circuit technologies require integrative functionality at ultra-high speed and dimensional compatibility with ultra-small silicon electronics. Metal photonics, or plasmonics, offers a promise of addressing the challenges with novel photonic components and architectures for on-chip information processing or sensing applications. Short communication range and strong light-matter interaction for the on-chip plasmonics allow us to extend beyond a conventional approach of integrating coherent and narrowband light source. Such hybrid electronic and photonic interconnection desires an on-chip photodetector that is highly responsive to broadband incoherent light along with simple design for nanoscale integration. Here we show an ultracompact broadband photodetection with an enhanced photoresponsivity based on a plasmonic nanoridge geometry. The nanoridge photodetector confines a wide spectrum of electromagnetic energy by an excitation of multiple plasmon resonances in a single nanostructure, thus enabling detection of weak and broadband light. With simple nanoscale design and material compatibility for the integration, the nanoridge photodetector opens up a new possibility of highly sensitive on-chip photodetection for future integrated circuits.
Advanced duplex for future wireless networks : spectrum sharing and massive MIMO perspectives
In the past, many full-duplex radio studies have mainly been done for mitigating self-interference (SI), which is the transmitted signal received by its own receiver. Now, beyond theoretical research at the academic level, research on how to apply it to the industry and how to use and operate it in an actual environment is being actively conducted. In these regards, we are faced with addressing two main challenges. First, many full-duplex studies have been conducted independently from previous studies, such as spectrum sharing and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies, to increase spectral efficiency. Second, recently, the importance of research that reflects the actual environment through real-time hardware prototyping has been highlighted. In the second chapter, SI cancellation methods compatible for the existing LTE system were proposed. The performance was evaluated by measuring the actual channel environment by implementing the testbed. In the third chapter, we considered the characteristics of the SI channel when the massive MIMO technology and the full-duplex technology are integrated. From numerical and analysis results, we have shown which SI cancellation method is better under the actual SI channel environment. In addition, channel estimation methods were proposed and evaluated. In the fourth chapter, we proposed a flexible duplex system that maximizes spectral efficiency through an opportunity map by combining full-duplex technology with spectrum sharing technology. The link-level performance was analyzed through real-time FPGA-based implementation. In addition, the performance was evaluated through system-level simulation. In the last chapter, a study that applied deep learning to supplement the problems in a flexible duplex was introduced.

“There are still plenty of room at the bottom.” This sentence is presented 60 years after Richard Feynman’s lecture on the atomic sized world. In other words, the new form of optoelectronics and nanophotonic technology that were recently announced surpassed his ideas and thinking. One of the fascinating areas of research in new nanophotonics, Quantum Plasmonics, was born out of the trend to uncover a “still plenty of room at the bottom”. It provides the cutting edge of information processing technology and can meet the ever-increasing speed and capacity demands of quantum computing or quantum cryptography. Ultimately, it enables the ultimate miniaturization of photonic components and gives the extreme limits in the light-matter interactions. In this dissertation, we are going to fabricate the nanostructure, provide a functionality on single and hybridized nanoplasmonic structures, elucidate the classical and quantum plasmonic properties of them, and then manipulate the structure in order to transduce the signal between the optical and electrical and vice versa. These following investigations enable the classical sensing and photodetector platform and further potential quantum state sensing, device, emitters, and new optoelectronics applications. More details, the dissertation strongly focuses on the nanoplasmonic coupling structure that allows the nanometer and sub-nanometer gap. Within this gap, the atomic-center induces the quantum tunneling through the junction thus enabling the potential optical switch application. In addition, the interaction of light and single nanoplasmonic structure are investigated to understand the photoconductivity at the different light conditions (wavelength, polarization, and coherency) and also hybridized structures are demonstrated with a nanometer scale gap thereby providing not only understanding to quantum science at the nanoscale but also a solid foundation for designing quantum devices at the system level. For the final research, we studied element technology that enables the miniaturization of light sources by designing atomic layer stacking devices for photon emitter applications by inelastic electron tunneling in nanometer scale gaps. The two topics in classical plasmonics (fabrication and functionalization for scalable nanoplasmonic sensing platform in large an area) and three topics in quantum plasmonics (photoconductivity modulation of nanowire and nanowire-particle system, quantum tunneling in particle-on-film system, inelastic electron tunneling in atomic layer stacking structure) provide novel understanding on light-matter interaction from the range of atomic size to nanoscale thus leading a convergence applications in nanophotonic technology.

This dissertation delves into novel methodologies aimed at amplifying human intentions through augmented interactions within cyberspace environments and enhancing the efficacy and safety of autonomous applications. Central to this thesis are two significant advancements: the development of an intuitive, hands-free interface for Virtual Reality (VR) headsets employing in situ facial gesture sensing, and the precise recognition of traffic control hand gestures by Authorized Traffic Controllers (ATCs) for the informed guidance of autonomous vehicles (AVs). The initial segment of this research introduces a groundbreaking hands-free command set for VR interfaces, utilizing infrared (IR) photocoupler-based technology to interpret natural facial gestures. This innovation permits users to navigate and interact within VR environments without the encumbrance of physical controllers, thereby closely aligning human intention with digital response. Validated through the creation and testing of a VR game, this interface exemplifies a leap towards more accessible, engaging, and intuitive user experiences in cyberspace, substantiating a substantial leap forward in VR interaction design. Subsequently, the thesis presents a methodical, three-tier system for the recognition of ATC hand gestures, a crucial component for augmenting the operational design domain (ODD) of Level 3 and higher AVs. This system leverages sophisticated 3D hand modeling and CNN-based gesture recognition to accurately interpret ATC signals, facilitating safer and more reliable autonomous navigation through human-populated environments. This part of the research not only enhances autonomous applications by ensuring AV compliance with human traffic directives but also bridges the gap between human intentions and machine understanding in real-world scenarios. Despite the notable progress, the research identifies areas for improvement, such as the VR interface's adaptability to diverse user physiognomies and the gesture recognition system's performance under varying environmental conditions. Future research directions are proposed, including the refinement of interface designs for inclusivity, the advancement of gesture recognition algorithms for greater reliability, and the broadening of data sets for global applicability in traffic gesture recognition. By foregrounding human intention in the interaction with digital and autonomous systems, this dissertation contributes vital insights and tools towards enriching human-computer interaction and driving the evolution of autonomous technologies. It envisions a future where augmented interactions in cyberspace and autonomous applications seamlessly integrate with and amplify human capabilities.

High-resolution radar imaging is required for small object detection, target identification, and small displacement. Therefore, this dissertation aims to acquire UHR radar images with sub-cm resolution using UWB radar signals. Impulse radio, SFCW, and FMCW radar signals using ultra-wideband and the principle of each signal have been described. Also, the principles and application of radar images are introduced. The RDA and the CSA which are SAR imaging algorithm are implemented the raw data from both the spaceborne SAR(RADARSAT-1 and KOMPSAT-5) and airborne SAR simulation. In the narrow bandwidth, it has been assumed that the RCS is independent of the frequency within the bandwidth, but it is impossible in a wide bandwidth. Therefore, the loss of propagation is assumed to be frequency dependent and the compensation model based on the scattering theory is proposed. This phenomenon has been confirmed experimentally by measuring an impulse target using SFCW radar and impulse radio radar signals. The signals from both radars are compensated by the supposed the compensation. The proposed method is verified by obtaining UHR signals that satisfy the theoretically expected resolutions. UHR radar images of a target on the turntable are obtained at far-field. In UHR radar, the distance between antennas and the center of rotation has a great influence on the radar imaging. Using the symmetry and geometry of the received signal, the center of rotation is precisely calculated and used for radar imaging. In addition, the UHR radar imaging using SFCW radar is carried out at near-field. In order to calculate the distance of the center of rotation, the radar image is obtained for each unit distance from the compressed signal by reducing the number of the data for reducing the computation time. Furthermore, the entropy of all images is calculated. The distance corresponding to the image with the smallest entropy is chosen and then the distance is applied to the UHR radar imaging. The W-band FMCW radar can be made small and light. A SAR imaging method using the W-band FMCW radar has been proposed at near-field in cases where the velocity of the target is unknown. The proposed methods are verified by the experiments using Impulse, SFCW, and FMCW radar signals and confirmed by UHR radar images. Theories of electromagnetism, geometry, and signal processing also support the proposed methods. The proposed UHR radar imaging techniques are useful for remote sensing, target detection, and identification. The proposed methods can be used for both security and medical radar imaging. The proposed focusing and calibration method along with UWB radar signal are important for the UHR radar imaging technology.

The research introduces an event monitoring interface for existence of the neural-signal, not conventional waveform monitoring for exact shape of the neuralsignal, through the change of view point and it shows that the information of neural-signal event monitoring can be drawn the same information as waveform monitoring. The high-density multi-electrode array (MEA), which is designed in a small-area for improving the spatial resolution is suggested and it is verified by the in-vitro and in-vivo measurement results, which can be widely used in applications of neuroscience. The neuroscience such as bio-sensor, medical diagnosis, artificial prosthesis, bio-robot, and artificial intelligence, which are neural-signal monitoring as a basis, has been developed by the sensor technology. Furthermore, the sensor technology has been improved to a low-noise level and high-spatial resolution due to characteristics of neural-signal and it is dominated issue of neuroscience development. Until now, the conventional neural-signal monitoring is amplified and filtered by the amplifier, which is fabricated by the CMOS due to target neuralsignal's small amplitude and its bandwidth. The noise reduction is needed due to the intrinsic noise of CMOS amplifier and the bandwidth of neural-signal (0.1 Hz ~ 10 kHz) is overlapped by the low-frequency flicker noise (DC ~ 10 kHz), whose amplitude is inversely proportional to the frequency. The chopper technique, implementing the modulation and demodulation manner is widely used for reducing the flicker noise. This can be useful when the low-impedance input sources are used. However, depending on the small-sized electrode for achieving the high-density electrode with limited area and the bandwidth of neural-signal is quite low, and thus it causes the impedance of electrode increase high enough. It causes the noise level increase by the shaped voltage noise at input-referred due to current noise of chopper switch. This phenomenon is theoretically analysis and verified by the simulation and measurement results of CMOS chopper amplifier. Furthermore, this analysis can be used as the guidelines for designing the low-noise chopper amplifier with high-impedance input source applications. The bulk switching technique is suggested for avoiding the noise shaping, which is the reason of chopper amplifier noise level increase, when the highimpedance input sources are used by implementing the switched MOS transistor technique, which is realized by the switching between inversion and accumulation state. Since the flicker noise is generated by the recombination and generation along the interface of MOS transistor channel, it can be reduced by decreasing the charge density at channel surface through the bulk switching. The amplifier is designed with bulk switching technique for verifying the theory and it shows that the bulk switching can be useful to reduce the flicker noise despite of the high-impedance input sources. Furthermore, the flicker noise reduction ratio of bulk switching technique is almost same as chopper's one, the bulk switching technique may be main stream of flicker noise reduction technique. However, the waveform monitoring interface for neural-signal is still power and area hungry due to its complexity, which causes the limitation of highdensity channel, and thus the event monitoring interface is suggested, which is included differential electrodes who can be obtained the neural-signal simultaneously. The 16X16 multi-electrode array interface of 359.2 μW low-power consumption, 3.5 μVrms level within 400 Hz and 4 kHz, and 0.93 μVrms level within 20 Hz and 250 Hz low-noise level is designed. It shows that the event monitoring can be useful for the neuroscience applications through the state-of-the-art multi-electrode array and the new design method of high-density multi-electrode array is suggested. This research shows that the multi-electrode array interface for event monitoring can be main stream of neuroscience, which is widely used for the highdensity neural-signal monitoring such as retina, olfactory epithelium, and brain diagnosis.

The emergence of reinforcement learning (RL) heralds a new era in machine learning, enabling algorithms to solve complex real-world problems by learning optimal behavior in interaction with the environment. However, applying RL to dynamic and uncertain real-world scenarios is challenging due to the unpredictable nature of the environment and the difficulty of generalizing from training to new situations. While traditional RL models are effective in structured simulations, they often fail to adapt to the complexity and unpredictability of real-world environments. This dissertation addresses these challenges by proposing a novel methodology for the learning representation of latent variables, which improves the adaptability and safety of RL models when faced with uncertainty and unexperienced problems. The core of this dissertation is developing a novel behavior prediction model that incorporates an unsupervised dual skill discovery algorithm and driver identification characteristics. The unsupervised dual-skill discovery algorithm learns an entangled representation of task-specific movements and morphological skills, enabling RL models to adapt to mechanical defects and morphological changes. Motion prediction models augmented with driver identification features improve vehicle trajectory prediction accuracy, significantly improving autonomous systems' safety. First, this dissertation proposes an unsupervised dual-skill discovery algorithm to ensure the ability of RL systems to operate in the context of mechanical defects and morphological changes. The introduced algorithm learns the disentangled representation of task-specific and morphological skills in an unsupervised manner. This allows the system to adapt to mechanical faults and morphological changes without prior learning about these specific conditions. The learned skill latents have been demonstrated to detect real-time mechanical failures and maintain operational integrity. Second, a novel motion prediction model that includes driver identification is proposed to improve the accuracy of vehicle trajectory prediction. The system identifies driver characteristics from vehicle behavior and leverages an attention mechanism to fine-tune motion prediction based on individual driver behavior. The Internet of Bio-Nano Things is a significant development for next-generation communication technologies. Since conventional wireless communication technologies face challenges in serving new applications and necessitate the substitution of information carriers, researchers have shifted their interest to molecular communications (MC). One crucial problem of MC is the low data rate and high error rate inherent in particle dynamics specifications, in contrast with wave-based conventional communications. Therefore, it is worth investigating the resources where MC can obtain extra information paths and provide strategies to exploit them. The other problem is that the testbed level is yet far from its target applications. This dissertation examines techniques involving aggregating and resource use to provide future directions for further progress in MC. The first part of this dissertation studies multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) operations, from detection algorithms in theory to prototype validations. The second part investigates the vessel-like MC testbed. Succeeding a remarkable prior work, we propose expansions on theory and prototype by studying single-shot signal responses based on learning-based approaches. The final part proposes a nano molecular communication system, including nano receiver design and detection strategies. The testbed utilizes a nanoscale sensor fabricated for communication purposes. We first describe our intuitions of nanomachine design from observations and show how the learning-based techniques can benefit the system by reducing the design burden and enhancing the accuracy of data detection. It is concluded by showing sample results of actual data transmission.

Silent speech recognition (SSR) is a technology that converts speech into text without relying on auditory information. Audio-based automatic speech recognition has the following limitations: its performance degrades in noisy environments, its applicability is limited in situations where voice-based communication is not allowed, and individuals facing challenges in vocalization cannot derive any benefits from it. SSR overcomes these limitations, positioning itself as a viable solution to supplement or even replace automatic speech recognition technology. To recognize speech without relying on auditory information, it is essential to capture non-acoustic biosignals related to speech. Various sensing techniques that involve invasive or contact processes have been suggested to achieve this goal. However, it is desirable to implement SSR with contactless sensors given that sensing techniques that involve invasive methods or require helmets or skin-attached sensors are not practical for everyday use. Impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar emerges as an appealing solution for implementing SSR owing to its non-contact nature and attractive properties. It exhibits high accuracy in target detection, operates through occluding materials, consumes less energy, and can be integrated into compact form factors. In this dissertation, three main studies were conducted to demonstrate contactless SSR using IR-UWB radar. First, an algorithm was developed to efficiently extract features reflecting articulatory movements from IR-UWB radar data. Second, an analysis was conducted to determine the favorable position for the IR-UWB radar, evaluating whether placing it in front of the mouth or under the chin would yield higher performance. Third, continuous SSR was implemented. If phonemes and words can be extracted from continuous speech, it becomes possible to recognize diverse real-life speeches, extending beyond the mere identification of a limited set of commands. To apply SSR in various real-life scenarios, it is essential to develop the SSR system into the level of continuous speech recognition, beyond isolated word recognition. This dissertation explores the feasibility of continuous SSR using contactless IR-UWB radar through the application of the proposed feature extraction algorithm, radar deployment strategy, and deep learning method. 비접촉식 센서인 IR-UWB(impulse radio ultra-wideband) 레이다는 다음과 같은 특성이 있다.

The demand for high-frequency electronic and photonic devices is continuously increasing. To meet these demands, advanced three-dimensional (3D) semiconductor architectures such as through-Si via (TSV) and trench gate structures have emerged, which require 3D structures with high etch rates. The fabrication of 3D semiconductors has often been realized through conventional dry and wet etching processes such as deep reactive ion etching (DRIE). However, these conventional etching techniques have limited applications in the continuously developing semiconductor technology field. Although conventional dry etching results in the desired vertically etched structures, the required vacuum environment increases the cost of the process, and the bombardment of high-energy plasma ions causes damage to the semiconductor surface. In contrast, although the conventional wet etching process is a simple, low-cost, and low-damage method, it cannot be used to manufacture vertically etched profiles because of its isotropic properties. To overcome these limitations of former etching techniques, a novel method—metal-assisted chemical etching (MacEtch)—has now become a widely applied technology for fabricating Si nano/microstructures. The MacEtch method is a solution-based etching process based on the redox reactions that occur when a metal-catalyst-deposited semiconductor substrate is immersed in an etching solution. This unconventional etching process overcomes the limitations of both conventional dry and wet etching while still successfully producing high-etch-rate nano/microstructures. Therefore, novel etching techniques are continuously developed based on the fundamental mechanism of the MacEtch process. Moreover, the MacEtch process has also been utilized to successfully produce 3D structures on substrates other than the most commonly used Si, such as compound semiconductors, hence broadening its applicability in photoelectric conversion devices and other applications as well. The MacEtch mechanism is governed by two main parts: the carrier generation and mass transport processes. Both the carrier generation and mass transport processes must be enhanced to obtain high etch rates and vertical etch profiles in MacEtch. Nonetheless, the distinct charge and mass transport mechanisms of Si microfabrication in MacEtch remains obscure, and the resulting etch rates are often less than 1 µm/min. Thus, this poses a challenge for future industrial implementations of the technology. In this thesis, the combination of catalyst thickness and etchant temperature were identified to have the greatest effect on the activation of the mass transport and carrier generation rate for Si microstructures, respectively. The aim was to enhance the mass transport and carrier generation rate by controlling these two parameters to achieve high etch rates in the microscale regime. During this process, the effect of controlling the etchant temperature by varying the parameter over a wide range of temperatures was thoroughly investigated. By analyzing the results, the trends and underlying mechanisms of systematically varying the etchant temperature during the MacEtch process were clarified. The MacEtch mechanisms behind the elevation of the etchant temperature and etching in the microscale regime were determined, which have remained vague thus far. Moreover, the intrinsically required aspects of the catalyst layer used in the MacEtch process are also thoroughly covered. The fundamental reason behind the specific selection of metal catalysts is covered, followed by the demonstration of a novel non-noble metal catalyst used in MacEtch for the first time. The findings from this work are expected to widen the scope of applications of MacEtch and contribute to higher efficiency for future semiconductor technologies.
