Improvement of new technology has given artists chances to escape from a main stream dominating the age and establish a new art style. Artists could extend the way of expression by use of new technology, and the line separating genres of art was blurred and new styles of art were appeared through this progress. In the view of this research, the installation of interactivity elements which are used in interactive art and kinetic art with properties and techniques of fiber art can be a trend of interdisciplinary art. A relation between artworks in the exhibition space is defined as a 'scene'in this research, and interrelations of artist-arts and arts-audiences are identified through the definition of the 'scene'. With this, the research derived 'interdisciplinary scene' as a new concept which is an integrated artwork of new media and fiber sculptural installation can be extended to a space where images of the installation are connected and communicated each other. This can be explained by the concept of intertextuality from Roland Barthes, and Barthes referred a relation between texts to an extended concept of interdisciplinary. This study suggests that a relation between fiber sculptural installations and participation of audiences can be advanced to the concept of interdisciplinary scene which refers to communication and interaction between arts·artists·audiences. Appearance of interactivity in the fiber sculptural installations blended with new media is identified through study on theories of Walter Benjamin and Roland Barthes. Walter Benjamin argued that a change of the concept of art was made by an improvement of new technology, photography. This study explores new Aura of artworks and the new media’s background of appearance through consideration of theory of Studium and Punctum by Roland Barthes. This research derived the concept of interdisciplinary scene by analysis on the researcher’s artwork, artwork’s Aura in the age of mechanical reproduction and the concept of Studium·Punctum. Also, the significance of kinetic art and interactive art in a relation between arts·artists·audiences is identified as interactivity elements in new media. Smart textile and electronic textile artworks are investigated to explain the relation between arts·artists·audiences. Possibility of contemporary fiber art-hand made textile integrated with interactivity of new media-’s advance to interdisciplinary art is identified. The concept of interdisciplinary art is examined through study of fiber art, sculpture, and installation works of artists in the related field. Christine Tarkowski, American Artist created a heterogeneous space through photography printing technology and silk screen techniques, and provided a meaning through concept of interdisciplinary. Christy Matson, American fiber artist extended communication between art and audience though her electronic textiles and interactive sound artwork. She dealt with the concept of smart textiles combined with substances and new technology. In artworks of David Hockney, British artist who expresses diversified points of view experimentally, it is demonstrated that image and scene can be extended to a space through a photographic montage. As described, a possibility of interdisciplinary art with multiple genres and interaction between artworks and audiences is examined. And also, this study substantiated the fact that images in exhibition space can be connected and generate a whole new space in one scene. fiber sculptural installations in this study can be extended to a space by interaction between pieces of the work, and furthermore, it reaches to metaphysical space through experience of audiences. This established an interdisciplinary scene which is integrated with arts, artists and audiences. Images of Loop area in Chicago and stone wall in Gahoe, Seoul installed in a row are in the virtual space between the real and the copy. In this specific space, audience can experience the interdisciplinary scene via virtual space which is created phenomenologically. This study investigated the interrelation between the virtual space consisted with images which exist but cannot be in the same space and the experience of this space by arts·artists·audiences. Interactive art installations in this study which can be completed by audiences created a physical space, which makes audience believe that visible images exist really. And it is demonstrated that the space with interactive fiber sculpture can be interdisciplinary scene. In conclusion, this study proposes a new style of fiber art combined with new media intimately and a new trend of contemporary fiber art. The extension of interactive fiber art to interdisciplinary scene can give a birth to new Aura of fiber art through this study which analyzes an interrelation between classic handwork fiber art and new technology.
Fiber art has been expanded to fine art rather than limiting itself to weaving crafts after Bauhaus’s experiment on finding new forms and extension of materials. The variation of the traditional method and the technical development were also the reasons for this but the introduction of new materials was the biggest driving force to a drastic change in fiber art. These new materials in contemporary fiber art have been mostly industrial materials such as plastic, rubber, metal and glass, which allowed fiber art to deviate from a surface and also present in a three dimensional form. Although fiber art have an influence on contemporary fine art, the position of fiber art has been vague in the traditional term of art, divided into painting, sculpture and architecture, so that it just becomes one of the kinds depending on how it is suggested. Thus, the researcher examines the features of visual perception in a fiber artwork, especially made with transparent material, as reconsideration of the identity of contemporary fiber art, and studies what meanings are derived from these features. Firstly, how a new material is introduced in contemporary fiber art and how the concept of a space is extended from the introduction of a new material are examined to process the study. Diverse kinds of new materials have brought interesting effects with unique gloss and textures, and led the conceptual development, connoting three-dimensional space and time in three-dimensional works. Also, how the transparent material, used in the researcher’s work, is manifested as a meaning of ‘Kinetic Energy’ in contemporary art is analyzed with its relationship with ‘Kinetic Art’. Secondly, based on the analysis made earlier, the types of the ‘Kinetic Energy’ structure, presented in contemporary fiber art, are studied in two kinds of perspectives: the visual and perceptual motility, recognized by properties of light and materials, and the life force, created by the repetition and multiplication of forms. The visual and perceptual mobility is easily triggered because light materials move easily as they are, and transparent or glittering materials often give visual instability to observers with a feeling of lightness. Also, how the situation that a certain unit is repeated like in the crochet technique can be understood as the multiplication in a living organism tells that it is an appropriate method of expressing ‘Kinetic Energy’ of a living organism. Thirdly, Lenore Tawney (1907-2007) and Kay Sekimachi (1926-) are chosen as reference artists and examined to see how ‘Kinetic Energy’ is presented in their works. The works of Lenore Tawney show ‘Kinetic Energy’ by making soft light through the unwoven thread and hanging her works in the air. The works of Kay Sekimachi visualizes ‘Kinetic Energy’ by expressing silence, lightness and flexibility through the complicate structure and understated colors of transparent nylon monofilament yarns. Lastly, the subject of this dissertation, how ‘Kinetic Energy’ is visualized as the semantic structure, is examined by analyzing the researcher’s works based on what the contents has examined earlier. The suggested works are divided into four different characteristics: ‘the soft geometry type from the effect of light’ occurring from the relationship of multilayered nylon monofilament crocheted fabrics and light, ‘the effect of the cellular structure from the crochet technique’ implying that crochet has the similar tendency with the growth of a cell and a living organism’s complicated forms, ‘the transformation and multiplication of organic structures’ suggesting that a multiplicative and variable crochet work has the similar characteristic with the feature of an organism, and how ‘Kinetic Energy’ is examined from the psychological perspective by hanging a work in the air, ‘the rising and floating in the form of a mobile’. This dissertation seeks for a possibility of expression that can be achieved only by fiber art among various forms of contemporary art through this series of the researcher’s analyses.
Fibre art was born in the mid-20th century as artist-craftsman attempted to produce fabrics as works of art. The 1960s saw endeavors to new formative methods, breaking from the traditional ones, resulting in diversification of techniques. In comparison, the 1970s was an era of extensive exploration of materials as well as techniques. The exploration of non-conventional materials such as industrial or daily-life materials, in particular, enabled the production of works in various forms, including three-dimensional or installation works. Nonetheless, the expansion of materials and techniques also serves as a factor that causes confusion in the identity of fibre art. In this regard, in a bid to reestablish the status of modern fibre art, I aimed to examine the changes that fibre art has experienced in line with those in modern society since the 1960s. It particularly focused on the formativeness of works of fibre art using plastic materials that have brought innovative changes to modern industry and everyday life. To this end, I looked into the characteristics of modern society starting from the 1960s, when fibre art had its beginning, and determined how social changes have been represented in fibre art. The rapid development of scientific technology and industry brought to modern people not only advantages represented by material affluence and the conveniences of life but also an unstable, double-sided emotion of deviation and satisfaction due to insecurity in dailiness that had not been found in traditional agrarian societies. Moreover, the advent of new materials resulting from industrial advances opened up possibilities of new formative expressions to fibre artists of the time who had been exploring a variety of materials. Plastic materials, in particular, are represented in various works of fibre art in terms of their physical characteristics such as transparency, reflectiveness, flexibility, and durability. This suggests that many everyday-life materials including plastic have many different meanings per se for artists, rather than being mere formative elements. They are selected as a medium for expressing and conveying the artist's personal emotions, trivial events and stories in everyday life, various aspects of modern society involving history, culture, consumer culture, and environmental issues, and spiritual ideas such as healing and meditation. I ascertained that the change and expansion of materials for fibre art was part of a natural transition that fiber art experienced along with trends of modern society as a genre of formative art that reflected contemporary culture in different views and manners. Second, I analyzed in depth what materials and techniques means to fibre art by selecting and examining Sheila Hicks and Ed Rossbach as model artists, who played a pioneering role in introducing fiber art around the 1950s by seeking fabric structures as new art forms, discarding the use of traditional fibre techniques and materials. 'Minimes' by Hicks, a result of exploration of various materials and fabric structures, is an independent work of art itself and an archive of the artist's ideas for a large-scale work as well as her everyday life. Rossbach showed the potential of various expression styles of fibre art derived from the expansion of materials and techniques through his works using thrown-away or old materials from daily life to discover their artistic value. Third, I analyzed my own work of art based on the findings of the abovementioned discussions. I first examined the reason for selecting plastic, the main material of the work and the key material discussed in this study, and its formativeness represented by its physical characteristics. Then I explained the meaning of the material and the internal discovery from the making process. Plastic bags, the key material for the work, are used in various ways in everyday life and regarded as a symbol of wasteful consumption behavior and environmental problems as opposed to its good function such as hygiene and convenience. I began creating this work by using them to produce yarns, the basic unit and essential element of a fabric. Plastic bags also have enough potential for being turned into yarns and fabrics thanks to their flexibility and durability. The making process is as important as the material to me. The process of weaving and sewing, which seems simple yet demands repetitive work for hours, allows me to experience immersion away from my daily routine and to realize the meaning of inner peace, life, and existence in the process.
From the semiotic point of view, though the aspects of expression which can be termed ‘indexical’ have existed in modern textile arts, it is the case that these areas and ways of expression have been attracting less attention than aspects of representations, pattern composition, materials, functions, or techniques. Nonetheless, What constitutes an essential part of my works is that they are indexical in terms of their expressions and contents. For such a reason, I tried to show that the indexical expressions in textile arts can occupy its relevant position among them, also expand possibilities of expression of textiles. First, it is required to give some artistic validity to my incence-burning technique which is quite indexical. Second, it is needed to elucidate the way how the indexical expressions function concretely so as to apprehend my works and another indexical textile works fully. Thus, in this thesis I tried to argue that the indexical expressions in textiles have pioneered an area which can be considered as a new form of expression of textiles, and examine how that way of expression can reveal the realm of unknowability by means of what way of signification and expression? Most thinkers and critics emphasize the fact that the criticism of ‘re-presentation’ or ‘representation’ whose concepts constitute modernity and its subjectivity has been conducted in postmodernism and contemporary arts. Since the mode of representation captures the real through appearance perceived by sense-data, it can’t grasp weight of Being, nature of life, the unknowability of nature. Because of this limit, many theoretical and practical approaches to overcome it has been existing until a recent date, in particular, modes of signification other than the mode of signification of representation have been sought in postmodernism. As a result, the indexical signs comes to the forefront. Since the nature of life, and its realm of unknowability to which even sciences can’t easily access, we are not capable of them through an anthropocentrism and we can catch only a small, restricted part of them by abstraction, mode of index can prevent anthropocentrism signification from working in that natural causality constitutes the essential parts of signification in indexical sign. Like this way, I expected that the indexical sign could reveal the real essence of human, nature, life not presented by the mode of representation in that it is shown as result of immediate interaction between the real things Accordingly, the method associating indexicality with unknowability is required, I proposed Gilles Deleuze’s concepts of ‘the diagram’. For Deleuze the diagram is the accidental marks and stains appeared during the action of painting, the spontaneous signs of body independent of painter. By this, the unpredicted Figure, and the other world, the irrational thing, something like events happens. So, I thought that these indexical expressions occurred in the handed diagram can imply the realm of unknowability. In this thesis, I reconstructed the history of modern art and textiles in a taxonomical way in accordance with the mode of signification of indexical sign, add to this Ann Hamilton and Kiki Smith have been chosen as representative samples for the concrete comparisons with my works. In the case of Hamilton, he exhibited the extraordinary, subtle sensations and feelings by the concepts of index as process, while using the sensuous property of the fragile materials like paper and the textures of textiles, Smith has ever expressed the female’s own sexuality and vulnerability. Both were proper references for a comparison with my works Inspired the mysteries of life itself, through my works I have tried to gain access to the female’s own sensibility and sexual, bodily identity, the invisible world unknown to us, and the realm of which we can’t make a full explanation even by virtue of scientific investigation, and I designated this realm ‘unknowability’. That I have applied the indexical signification to textiles is because not only I tried to expand a material potential of expression of textiles but also I wholeheartedly agreed that the mode of signification by which we can access to the realm of unknowability is the very indexical sign. In this thesis, accordingly, I tried to verified that the indexical works in textile arts could be an important part of expression of textiles, I also tried to confirm this through significant characteristics of my works such as form, process, contents.
This study is intended to explain the principle of tectonic with which textile, through the technical scheme of knitting, comes to have a formative characteristic in works by researching the essential characteristic of tectonic which means the process of transformation from textile into fabric. The nature of the works can be characterized as the process of structuralization and transformation of textile. Such properties are found useful in the discussion of Gottfried Semper’s perspective. Gottfried Semper’s tectonic concept which deals with structure of textile and creation relationship of semantics with integrated vision defines that textile and craft technique than any other things are the origin of construction. With this theoretical basis, the interpretation of research works can explain the exterior stylistic characteristics which are formed through the process procedure by the nature of textile matter bearing Semper’s tectonic concept and even psychological area which melted in the characteristics. The construction process of the research works is like that woven textile forms ‘surface’ and resulting fabric forms space being structuralized by joining pieces, thus formed structure is the result of making process and also reveals systemicity and organic symbols. The systemicity of the research works symbolizes the order of nature. The expressive characteristic of research works is formed by geometric systemicity, which is researcher’s unique way of form organization. Construction of frames described as Semper’s ‘caribbean hut’ forms the shell of the structure by knitting techniques from the gathering of textile materials and is laced with the frames and textile. Structuralizing textile recognizing the weaving principle of textile is the origin of construction is to reveal logical process of tectonic representation of knitting in the works by recognizing textile is the essence of tectonic, not understanding textile as constructional concept. Geometric systemicity consisting of the research works’ constructional process is a concrete frame enabling practical expression which forms and divides space, and what enables various formative attempts and expansion of expression. Thus the visual results by systemicity bear stories about the ambivalent symbolism and organic circulation of life and arranging the squares on a regular basis through geometric systemicity diversify forms and the variation structures created by knitting reveals the tectonic characteristic implying the meaning of life. Extensive expression of ‘tectonic’ in the works means that structuralization and signifying interact on each other organically in the category of systemicity and bears cyclical ‘symbols’ of life by transformation of various structures. Le Corbusier and Lucy Orta are pointed out as the sample artists in this research showing the examples of the actual realization of tectonic and tectonic metamorphosis of textile. In Le Corbusier’s architecture and art works, array system of geometric forms shows the practical application of metamorphosis concept, and his tapestries themselves explain Semper’s tectonic. Meanwhile, Lucy Orta reveals tectonic of textile through telonomy of structure in the boundary between architecture and clothing. She also shows transformational nature of textile by applying regular array system in combining or disassembling of works. Figurative limitations of constructing textile using geometric system in the research works are overcome by connecting or disassembling works modularly resulting in representational expandability. Thus, research works that can be called tectonic metamorphosis reflect the cyclical nature of organisms through the process of construction that circulate repeatedly with no ends like life and death which coexist in the ambivalent meaning. Organic and atypical nature of metamorphosis is realized by the process and pattern, and geometric system. In conclusion, textile expressed tectonically by knitting forms space combining the materials, technique dealing with them and intended system, so it shows the expression of textile according to tectonic nature can expand the expressive horizons in textile formation. This research is meaningful in the way that it’s a direct example of the principle of fabric structure expanding into formative expression being shed new light recently, and also a serious quest for identify and principle property of textile.
Since 1960, fiber art has utilized industrial technology materials such as copper wire, PVC, optical fiber, and film, steering away from traditional methods and human emotions become the main subject expressed in three dimensional spaces and installation forms that emphasize the interaction between the artist and the audience. In particular, the use of transparent industrial and technological materials is expanding and growing, creating a new era today. On the other hand, the diversification of modern fiber art caused an identity confusion for fiber artists. Therefore, in this study, the process of space formation was modeled in relation to the expression of human emotion using the composition of transparent PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) material based on the geometric and aesthetic lines of the buildings surrounding modern people as a part of creating the aesthetic value of modern fiber art. The buildings were reconstructed by continuous and crossing complex vertical and horizontal lines, expressing repetitive rhythm and rhythmic sense through temporal chaos. As for the process of this study, first, the expressive and formative meaning of the line was reviewed starting from the study of modern fiber art works using lines and transparent materials. It opened the possibilities of lines in terms of expression and used them in various forms. In terms of transparency, the structural form was derived from the physical reflection of the PVC surface and the expansion and duality of space. Second, the formativeness of the space by the lines presented in modern fiber art was examined. Based on the definition of the line proposed by philosophers H·Read and Kandinsky, the mutual relationship of lines and spaces was examined. In particular, when examining the formative characteristics, expressiveness, and symbolism of the line, it revealed that the line is a visual expression element and symbolizes the everyday image in the work of the artist and the researcher with various materials in the work and implies a spiritual meaning expressing the inner world. Also, the transparent space can be represented as a provisional symbol as a non-verbal language expressing the rule of conduct by the rule of the line. As a result, the spatial structure of the transparent substance through the line has brought the possibility of a new formative expression and has appeared as another healing process in the researcher's unstable inner world and emotions. Third, Rebecca R. Medel (1947~) and Carlos Cruz- Diez (1923~) were selected as sample artists in order to give logical validation to the researcher's work by more specifically examining the meaning of lines and repetitions and how the material is expressed in their work. Rebecca R. Medel's large-scale net construction project is a visualization of overlap and continuity by lines crossing the outer and inner spaces in a space form. It is an independent creation, emphasizing the physical properties of the material representing the double-sidedness of vision and expansion of gaze. Carlos Cruz-Diez presents geometric and abstract forms with repetitive lines and colors, encouraging communication with the audience through participative visual experiences. Fourth, based on the above mentioned contents, the researcher’s work was analyzed. The selection background and transparency of PVC, the main material of the work and the topic of the research, were analyzed. The function of the material and the manufacturing process was described. This study described the rediscovery of the inner world through the process of repetition and overlapping using the PVC wire with weaving and sewing, expressing the researcher’s inner emotions and healing process, and at the same time an external structural space through repetition of lines. The PVC material used by the researcher is a material that has potential to be converted into a material for formative expression from practical application. For the researcher, the transparency of PVC is a space of projection to look into oneself and a medium to communicate with the audience in various ways. 특히, PVC(Poly Vinyl Chloride, 폴리염화비닐)와 같은 투명한 소재사용은 동시대 예술의 새로운 영역을 확장한 사례이다.
This study started from a question as to whether artists are free from the responsibility for the reality of the depletion of many types of natural resources and the consequent destruction of the ecosystem that have made today's civilization possible. Moreover, in researching into works of art, I attempted to symbolically embody my concern over the ecological problems and issues involving women as vulnerable members of society of our time. The main objective of this study is to analyze the social and artistic contexts of relevant works of art. Ecofeminism is a feminist theory that seeks alternatives to the ecological and women's issues of the present by defining a masculine-culture-centric patriarchal system and extreme competition sparked by capitalism as the common cause of the issues. To understand ecofeminism in the context of feminism, I looked into the arguments and characteristics of Enlightenment feminism and cultural feminism and examined the activities and works of feminist artists relevant to each type of feminism. Enlightenment feminist artists who emerged in the early days of the feminist movement include Harriet Powers, an African-American leading figure in quilt, Jang Sun-hee, an embroidery educator from the Japanese colonial period, and Na Hye-seok who took the lead in enlightening women as the first female artist of Western painting in the Joseon Dynasty era. They all practiced women's equality and liberation in the form of creation and education. Cultural feminism following Enlightenment feminism emphasizes women's own qualities. Cultural feminists argue that in terms of arts, materials and techniques that reflect women's lives, such as crafts and ornaments transmitted in matriarchal traditions, have good value as esthetic factors. This view is in line with the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain that advocated the moral restoration and democratization of arts in that they both emphasize the organic relations between human beings and arts. Niki de Saint Phalle showed cultural feminist factors in her works that highlight the value of motherhood and the liberation of femininity in a male-dominated culture. Ecofeminism that emerged afterward not only criticizes the dichotomous standards for superiority and discrimination against nature and women but also focuses on the restoration of traditional gender roles and gender cultures that have been neglected due to excessive emphasis on economic value. In this regard, Ivan Illich claimed that the conventional gender roles and gender cultures that flourished before industrial societies emerged should be restored through the concept of 'Vernacular Gender'. The term 'vernacular' is also used to describe the history and cultural sentiments of African-Americans implied in African-American literary works, and both 'vernacular gender' and 'vernacular' in African-American literature lay stress on each individual's origin, experience, conventional thinking, and gender. Thus in this study, I referred to objects with such value as a 'Vernacular Object' and used the concept as the main idea for analysis of works of art. For example, I determined that "Femmage," created by Miriam Schapiro, meaning 'female collage,' has value as an vernacular object considering it is a collection of factors derived from women's lives. In addition, to analyze the influential relationships between works of art from the same period, I examined the influential relationships between ecofeminist factors in formative and emotional terms by examining works of feminist artists and female artists. In Wang Kyung-ae's sewing works, I discovered symbols of healing, combination, and reconciliation for care and bioethics of nature based on social and cultural sentiments in Korea and women's own emotions. Chung Kyung-yeun has had a far-reaching influence on the fabric art field in Korea since the 1980s by creating a gentle form of sculpture using gloves as the object. Kim soo-ja, who reinterpreted Korean women's sentiments and objects, helped me ascertain the esthetic, emotional potential of native objects. I also found that the esthetics of motherhood that enables women to tend wounds and take care of abandoned beings is the spiritual value of ecofeminism by examining Yun Suk-nam's work of art representing women and abandoned dogs. I looked into my work of art based on the abovementioned discussions. The work is mainly characterized by the use of old wood and sewing. Old wood, thrown away from the destruction of an old building, symbolizes abandoned beings, men, homes, patriarchal systems, and social restrictions imposed on women, while sewing serves as a vernacular object that represents the esthetics of care and regeneration unique to women that were formed in matriarchal cultural traditions. This work was produced by sewing big stitches on the material or wrapping a piece of old wood with a fabric with stitches. The wrapping style using fabric, showing that one object is treasured after transforming into a new one, is to wish healing and rebirth. Then using these, I installed the work with the purpose of producing a dramatic space that has a narrative in it. Regarding the work, I divided the main theme into sub-categories -abandoned objects, the value of care, time for regeneration, and co-existence -and discussed the findings that reveal the ecological crisis and support the idea of the restoration of femininity. This discussion follows the steps in order, from the discovery of the materials to regeneration and co-existence through observation and care over a long period of time. The creation of the work, which started from a stray thought of abandoned objects continuously found today, extends to a question as to the value of the harsh period where even humans are abandoned and then leads to efforts and wishes for healing on a social level, including care and regeneration. In conclusion, through this study and the work or art, I aimed to highlight the need for demolishing various boundaries and seeking the value of co-existence in order to overcome the crises facing humankind resulting from the destroyed ecosystem and to restore the inherence of the genders.
Entering the industrial age, modern-day people are under the systems of mechanization and mass production. This leads to innovative changes in design in terms of furniture, architecture and textile. Decorative elements become more and more simplified and people start to pay attention to geometric forms. In particular, in the early 20th century, Bauhaus mainly constitutes geometric design education emphasizing functionality. This study inquires into textile design focused on linearity among various geometric forms. Textile design began to use non-traditional materials such as optical fibers and plastics since the 1960s. Later, the application of new technology of digital printing on fabrics entered into general use as well. By generalizing new materials and technology and combining artistic expressions of artists, textile crafts expand the scope towards formative arts. The process of transferring from textile crafts to textile art presents expansive meaning. On the other hand, union between textile art and textile products proposes selective meaning. The advantages of this blending aim at harmonious coexistence and birth of new and excellent beings. For this reason, for the basic task of this combination, it is indispensable to seek features and key elements of each part. Considering this, this study intends to search for the characteristics and key elements of linear textile design, the basic theme of textile art. This study is based on figuration theory of linearity. In particular, this study is founded on conception theory of Wassily Kandinsky (1866~1944) and visual perception theory of Rudolf Arnheim (1904~2007). By analyzing works of Jesús-Rafael Soto (1923~2005) and Daniel Buren (1938~ ) selected as sample artists of this research, this study will make approaches to features of linear design. Soto’s works carrying out works based on compact lines bring about changes of visual perception due to texture of lines and arrangement method of space. Moreover, the figuration of the work varies depending on the moving flow of which the viewer moves around the work. His works propose the basic concept of superposition and arrangement of lines. In addition, they define the relationship between the viewer and the works according to light, property of matter and movement. On the other hand, Buren uses the coded stripes considered his unique signature to carry out work in situ (site-specific works). He puts values on relationship between linear works and the space. This study will verify correlation between theory and real works through this analysis. The Series of “Flow,” “Still” and “Wave” are representative works of mine and they show the world where the previously mentioned features of linear textile design are applied after some transformation. Based on the basic premise of which lines create forms, these seek for diversification of expressions in three realms. In the first place, it refers to linear textile art works and textile design. In the second place, it indicates textile art using effects of light. In the last place, it points out expression according to visualization of sound. This study intends to find phased characteristics and key formative elements through concrete work development processes. Furthermore, this study aims to discover elements applicable to combination between works and products, by clarifying the process of adopting textile design used in the formative works to the process of developing handbags as real products. The key elements of linearity discovered from theoretical studies and work analysis of linear textile design comprise direction, thickness, placement, distance, colors, density, material and light of lines. This study expects that these eight formative elements can contribute to not only textile art works but also development of products. According to my theory of art, the effort of applying expression method of figurative works to products is considered natural. Completion of art that continues with philosophy, expression and heart-moving impression can be realized not only in the figurative art works but also in commercial products. I hope that this basic study can serve not only for linear textile design but also for each realm of textile art.
The purpose of this study is on the fiber arts that simultaneously express the formativeness of Hangul pattern and the physical properties of fiber without limiting the Hangul textile design to 2D graphic design or planes only. The study is particularly focused on the visual effects created by the fibers combined with the sense of language possessed by the characters. As we already know, Hangul is created based on humanism and the basic structure of Hangul starts from points and lines comprising the minimum unit of geometrical figure. To investigate the formativeness of Hangul, various artworks have been examined such as textiles, costumes, crafts, paintings and graphic designs using Hangul, as well as main concepts and formative principles of Hangul. Also, attention was paid to various visual repetition patterns depending on the transformation of the lattice in the fabric flat pattern. And, pattern designs of American graphic designers Zuzana Licko who patterned English characters using unit repetition, were examined in order to understand that the human senses of language are closely related to the visual effects of patterns. Overlay plays a very important role in texture and visual effects of the pattern. When characters are printed and overlaid on translucent material such as organza used in the researcher's works, even the hearing of the spectators can be coupled to process of recognizing Hangul patterns. This is because, when translucent planes designed with Hangul patterns are superimposed on one another, a visual sound, i.e. resonance, appears produced by the spacing of planes. Anatol Knotek and Ahn Sang-Soo were examined as sample artists. Anatol Knotek expresses meanings metaphorically through the size and arrangement of alphabet letters. The method of conveying meaning through the change and repetition of the size of characters and the method of expression through overlay of the characters have a connection with the works of the researcher but are related to the meaning of the word itself. Ahn Sang-Soo expresses Hangul as a basic form of straight line and circle, so that Hangul is designed as a pure formative element rather than a means of conveying meaning. Only the works by repetition and overlay were studied, among his Hangul designs. The main purpose of the study is to analyze the overlay and repetition including character’s stereoscopic feature in the structure for the researcher's Hangul pattern works. The visual effect of the Hangul structure was important, but the specificity of the Hangul characters was also an important topic. Hangul is a phonetic alphabet, closely related to our oral structure. The resonance and rhythm occurring from the placement and composition of the Korean motifs were very important issues of the study. The expansion and self-similarity of Hangeul were expressed as resonance in a planar pattern where new motifs are generated by constant repetition. In addition, Moire phenomenon inherent in the properties of translucent organza amplified the visual sense of Hangul in combination with the resonance of Hangul.
Pop art, which is in its heyday in modern society, is one of the genres of art worth paying attention to. Pop art of the past was evaluated as a commercial art that broke the boundaries of high-class art. The form of pop art was criticized for promoting pleasure because it was expressed as imitative and repetitive falsehoods, but after the Industrial Revolution, it was used as an artistic activity for communication and entertainment for the public who were alienated from the art culture at the time due to the emergence of industry, capitalism, and consumer society. has been developed Therefore, research on pop art is closely related to the lives of contemporaries and their expression methods. Contemporary art today needs art that is familiar to the public. This is because art is a matter of culture, not of style. Interest in pop art in the realm of art originates from the fact that it evokes multi-layered positions and discussions in contemporary art. A lot of modern art is closely related to pop art expression. In the complex and rapidly changing modern society, the public wants immediate pleasure and improvised play provided by simple humor that is consumed quickly, and tends to seek satisfaction through stimulating and interesting things. Pop art has a close relationship with the needs of the public, realizing the popularization of art and everyday use of materials, and has developed along with the changes of the times through communication with the public. The purpose of this study is to study the playful expression of textile design reflecting elements of pop art. Reflecting the aesthetic characteristics of pop art, researcher proposes a popular-friendly textile design. First, the researcher proposes a sensual experience that can communicate with the public by borrowing symbolic characters, childhood memories, and everyday materials. Second, as a playful expression technique of pop art, the cartoon character shape is used as the narration of the work. The shape reminiscent of a character induces a playful sensibility to the viewers at the same time as various symbolism. Third, use the line drawing technique. Graffiti paintings, such as children's drawings ,are expressed in a childish and cartoonish sensibility by adding a sense of primary color. Fourth, the screen composition by mixing media is used as an element that dramatically expresses the object by superimposing the three-dimensional and flat surfaces of the screen. Fifth, the visual effect of images is emphasized through the use of popular and symbolic colors.Textile design development reflecting elements of pop art has the potential to be used in the field of textile products. Therefore, it is expected that this study will be applied to the development of textile design in the future as basic data for the study of the playful expression of pop art.
