    • Antioxidant Responsiveness in BALB/c Mice Exposed to Ozone

      Jang, An-Soo,Choi, Inseon-S.,Yang, Sung-Yeul,Kim, Young-Gon,Lee, June-Hyuk,Park, Sung-Woo,Park, Choon-Sik S. Karger AG 2005 Respiration Vol.72 No.1

<P><I>Background:</I> A single, acute exposure to ozone has been shown to modify the antioxidant defense mechanism in the respiratory tract. <I>Objective:</I> The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ozone exposure on antioxidant response in BALB/c mice. <I>Methods:</I> We measured enhanced pause of breathing (Penh) as a marker of airway obstruction using barometric whole-body plethysmography before and after ozone exposure [groups (n = 6): filtered air, 0.12 ppm, 0.5 ppm, 1 ppm, 2 ppm] for 3 h. Antioxidant levels were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid and lung tissue homogenates. <I>Results:</I> Malondialdehyde concentrations in lung tissue homogenates were significantly increased in the group exposed to 2-ppm ozone compared to the filtered air group. Uric acid and γ-tocopherol concentrations in BAL fluid were significantly increased in the ozone exposure group compared to the filtered air group (p < 0.01). Uric acid concentrations were increased in a concentration-dependent manner according to ozone concentration to which the animals were exposed. Increases in Penh after ozone exposure were significantly higher in an ozone concentration-dependent manner. The proportion of neutrophils in BAL fluid was significantly higher in the group exposed to 2 ppm than in the filtered air and the group exposed to 0.12 ppm (p < 0.01, respectively). The level of ascorbate correlated with the level of γ-tocopherol. <I>Conclusion:</I> These findings suggest that antioxidant responses may serve as a protective mechanism against a range of oxidants in BALB/c mice exposed to ozone. </P><P>Copyright © 2005 S. Damping index of Doppler hepatic vein waveform to assess the severity of portal hypertension and response to propranolol in liver cirrhosis: a prospective nonrandomized study

      Kim, Moon Young,Baik, Soon Koo,Park, Dong Hun,Lim, Dae Wook,Kim, Jae Woo,Kim, Hyun Soo,Kwon, Sang Ok,Kim, Young Ju,Chang, Sei Jin,Lee, Samuel S. Wiley-Blackwell Publishing 2007 Liver International Vol. No.

<P>Abstract</P><P>Background and Aims</P><P>Alterations in the Doppler hepatic vein (HV) waveform are associated with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. We prospectively evaluated the correlation between the extent of abnormal Doppler HV waveforms expressed as damping index (DI) and the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) and response to propranolol in patients with cirrhosis.</P><P>Material and Methods</P><P>In 76 patients with cirrhosis (69 men and seven women), both DI of Doppler HV waveform and HVPG were measured, and the relationship between them was analysed. DI was calculated by the minimum velocity/maximum velocity of the HV waveform. An HVPG>12 mmHg was defined as severe portal hypertension. In a subgroup of 19 patients receiving propranolol, changes in both DI and HVPG were evaluated after propranolol administration for 3 months. One author (S. K. B.) performed all DI of Doppler HV waveform studies.</P><P>Results</P><P>Abnormal HV waveforms were seen in 66 of 76 patients (86.8%). DI significantly correlated with the grade of HVPG, i.e. with higher HVPG increased DI was observed (<I>P</I><0.01). By logistic regression analysis, DI>0.6 was significantly more likely to be severe portal hypertension (odds ratio: 14.19, 95% confidence interval: 4.07–49.55). Receiver-operating characteristic curve according to the value of 0.6 of DI showed a sensitivity of 75.9% and a specificity of 81.8% for the presence of severe portal hypertension. In 19 patients of the propranolol subgroup, change of DI following propranolol treatment also significantly correlated with that of HVPG (<I>P</I><0.01).</P><P>Conclusions</P><P>Damping index of the HV waveform by Doppler ultrasonography might be a non-invasive supplementary tool in evaluating the severity of portal hypertension and in responding to propranolol in patients with liver cirrhosis.</P>

Large-scale pattern growth of graphene films for stretchable transparent electrodes

      Kim, Keun Soo,Zhao, Yue,Jang, Houk,Lee, Sang Yoon,Kim, Jong Min,Kim, Kwang S.,Ahn, Jong-Hyun,Kim, Philip,Choi, Jae-Young,Hong, Byung Hee Macmillan Publishers Limited. All rights reserved 2009 Nature Vol.457 No.7230

Problems associated with large-scale pattern growth of graphene constitute one of the main obstacles to using this material in device applications. Recently, macroscopic-scale graphene films were prepared by two-dimensional assembly of graphene sheets chemically derived from graphite crystals and graphene oxides. However, the sheet resistance of these films was found to be much larger than theoretically expected values. Here we report the direct synthesis of large-scale graphene films using chemical vapour deposition on thin nickel layers, and present two different methods of patterning the films and transferring them to arbitrary substrates. The transferred graphene films show very low sheet resistance of ∼280 Ω per square, with ∼80 per cent optical transparency. At low temperatures, the monolayers transferred to silicon dioxide substrates show electron mobility greater than 3,700 cm2 V-1 s-1 and exhibit the half-integer quantum Hall effect, implying that the quality of graphene grown by chemical vapour deposition is as high as mechanically cleaved graphene. Employing the outstanding mechanical properties of graphene, we also demonstrate the macroscopic use of these highly conducting and transparent electrodes in flexible, stretchable, foldable electronics.

A Multimodal Ensemble Deep Learning Model for Functional Outcome Prognosis of Stroke Patients

      Hye-Soo Jung,Eun-Jae Lee,Dae-Il Chang,Han Jin Cho,Jun Lee,차재관,Man-Seok Park,유경호,Jin-Man Jung,Seong Hwan Ahn,Dong-Eog Kim,Ju Hun Lee,Keun-Sik Hong,Sung-Il Sohn,박경필,Sun U. Kwon,Jong S. Kim,Jun Young Cha 대한뇌졸중학회 2024 Journal of stroke Vol.26 No.2

Background and Purpose The accurate prediction of functional outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is crucial for informed clinical decision-making and optimal resource utilization. As such, this study aimed to construct an ensemble deep learning model that integrates multimodal imaging and clinical data to predict the 90-day functional outcomes after AIS. Methods We used data from the Korean Stroke Neuroimaging Initiative database, a prospective multicenter stroke registry to construct an ensemble model integrated individual 3D convolutional neural networks for diffusion-weighted imaging and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), along with a deep neural network for clinical data, to predict 90-day functional independence after AIS using a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) of 3–6. To evaluate the performance of the ensemble model, we compared the area under the curve (AUC) of the proposed method with that of individual models trained on each modality to identify patients with AIS with an mRS score of 3–6. Results Of the 2,606 patients with AIS, 993 (38.1%) achieved an mRS score of 3–6 at 90 days post-stroke. Our model achieved AUC values of 0.830 (standard cross-validation [CV]) and 0.779 (time-based CV), which significantly outperformed the other models relying on single modalities: b-value of 1,000 s/mm2 (P<0.001), apparent diffusion coefficient map (P<0.001), FLAIR (P<0.001), and clinical data (P=0.004). Conclusion The integration of multimodal imaging and clinical data resulted in superior prediction of the 90-day functional outcomes in AIS patients compared to the use of a single data modality.

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome is a rare complication of strongyloidiasis that frequently occurs in immunosuppressed patients. The parasite ordinarily localizes in the small intestines, especially in the duodenal and jejunal part. Reports of gastric involvement are rare. We report a case of an immunosuppressed patient who had severe S. stercoralis infection of the stomach in association with purulent meningitis.

    • Comparative study of MnO2 nanoparticle synthesis by marine bacterium Saccharophagus degradans and yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae

      Salunke, Bipinchandra K.,Sawant, Shailesh S.,Lee, Sang-Ill,Kim, Beom Soo Springer-Verlag 2015 Applied microbiology and biotechnology Vol.99 No.13

<P>Microorganisms are one of the most attractive and simple sources for the synthesis of different types of metal nanoparticles. The synthesis of manganese dioxide nanoparticles (MnO2 NPs) by microorganisms from reducing potassium permanganate was investigated for the first time in the present study. The microbial supernatants of the bacterium Saccharophagus degradans ATCC 43961 (Sde 2-40) and of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed positive reactions to the synthesis of MnO2 NPs by displaying a change of color in the permanganate solution from purple to yellow. KMnO4-specific peaks also disappeared and MnO2-specific peaks emerged at an absorption maximum of 365?nm in UV-visible spectrophotometry. The washed Sde 2-40 cells did not show any ability to synthesize MnO2 NPs. The medium and medium constituents of Sde 2-40 showed similar positive reactions as supernatants, which indicate the role of the Sde 2-40 medium constituents in the synthesis of MnO2 NPs. This suggests that microorganisms without nanoparticle synthesis ability can be misreported for their abilities to synthesize nanoparticles. S. cerevisiae washed cells showed an ability to synthesize MnO2 NPs. The strategies of keeping yeast cells in tea bags and dialysis membranes showed positive tests for the synthesis of MnO2 NPs. A Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy study suggested roles for the proteins, alcoholic compounds, and cell walls of S. cerevisiae cells in the synthesis of MnO2 NPs. Electron-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses confirmed the presence of Mn and O in the sample. X-ray?photoelectron?spectroscopy revealed characteristic binding energies for MnO2 NPs. Transmission electron microscopy micrographs revealed the presence of uniformly dispersed hexagonal- and spherical-shaped particles with an average size of 34.4?nm. The synthesis approach using yeast is possible by a simple reaction at low temperature without any need for catalysts, templates, or expensive and precise equipment. Therefore, this study will be useful for the easy, cost-effective, reliable, and eco-friendly production of nanomaterials.</P>

Global, Regional, and National Trends in Liver Disease-Related Mortality Across 112 Countries From 1990 to 2021, With Projections to 2050: Comprehensive Analysis of the WHO Mortality Database

      Hahn Jong Woo,Woo Selin,Park Jaeyu,Lee Hyeri,Kim Hyeon Jin,Ko Jae Sung,Moon Jin Soo,Rahmati Masoud,Smith Lee,Kang Jiseung,Pizzol Damiano,Tully Mark A,Dragioti Elena,Sánchez Guillermo F. López,Lee Kwan 대한의학회 2024 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.39 No.46

Background: Liver disease causes over two million deaths annually worldwide, comprising approximately 4% of all global fatalities. We aimed to analyze liver disease-related mortality trends from 1990 to 2021 using the World Health Organization (WHO) Mortality Database and forecast global liver disease-related mortality rates up to 2050. Methods: This study examined age-standardized liver disease-related death rates from 1990 to 2021, employing data from the WHO Mortality Database across 112 countries across five continents. The rates over time were calculated using a locally weighted scatter plot smoother curve, with weights assigned based on the population of each country. Furthermore, this study projected liver disease-related mortality rates up to 2050 using a Bayesian age-periodcohort (BAPC) model. Additionally, a decomposition analysis was conducted to discern influencing factors such as population growth, aging, and epidemiological changes. Results: The estimated global age-standardized liver disease-related mortality rates surged significantly from 1990 to 2021 across 112 countries, rising from 103.4 deaths per 1,000,000 people (95% confidence interval [CI], 88.16, 118.74) in 1990 to 173.0 deaths per 1,000,000 people (95% CI, 155.15, 190.95) in 2021. This upward trend was particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries, in Africa, and in populations aged 65 years and older. Moreover, age-standardized liver disease-related mortality rates were correlated with a lower Human Development Index (P < 0.001) and sociodemographic index (P = 0.001). According to the BAPC model, the projected trend indicated a sustained and substantial decline in liver disease-related mortality rates, with an estimated decrease from 185.08 deaths per 1,000,000 people (95% CI, 179.79, 190.63) in 2021 to 156.29 (112.32, 214.77) in 2050. From 1990 to 2021, age-standardized liver disease-related deaths surged primarily due to epidemiological changes, whereas from 1990 to 2050, the impact of population aging and growth became the primary contributing factors to the overall increase. Conclusion: Global age-standardized liver disease-related mortality has increased significantly and continues to emerge as a crucial global public health issue. Further investigation into liver disease-related mortality rates in Africa is needed, and updating policies is necessary to effectively manage the global burden of liver disease.

Risk Factors for Postoperative Recurrence in Korean Patients with Crohn’s Disease

      Sung Bae Kim,Jae Hee Cheon,Jae Jun Park,Eun Soo Kim,Seong Woo Jeon,Sung-Ae Jung,Dong Il Park,Chang Kyun Lee,Jong Pil Im,You Sun Kim,Hyun Soo Kim,Jun Lee,Chang Soo Eun,Jeong Mi Lee,Byung Ik Jang,Geom S 거트앤리버 소화기연관학회협의회 2020 Gut and Liver Vol.14 No.3

Background/Aims: A considerable number of patients with Crohn’s disease still need intestinal resection surgery. Postoperative recurrence is an important issue in Crohn’s disease management, including the selection of high-risk patients. Eastern Asian patients showed several differences from Caucasian patients. Therefore, we investigated the postoperative surgical recurrence outcome and identified risk factors in Korean patients. Methods: Clinical data of 372 patients with Crohn’s disease who underwent first intestinal resection between January 2004 and August 2014 at 14 hospitals in Korea were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Over the follow-up period, 50 patients (17.1%) showed surgical recurrence. The cumulative surgical recurrence rate was 6.5% at 1 year and 15.4% at 7 years. Age under 16 (p=0.011; hazard ratio [HR], 5.136; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.576 to 16.731), colonic involvement (p=0.023; HR , 2.011; 95% CI, 1.102 to 3.670), and the presence of perianal disease at surgery (p=0.008; HR, 2.239; 95% CI, 1.236 to 4.059) were independent risk factors associated with surgical recurrence. Postoperative thiopurine treatment (p=0.002; HR, 0.393; 95% CI, 0.218 to 0.710) was a protective factor for surgical recurrence. Conclusions: Among the disease characteristics at surgery, younger age, colonic location, and perianal lesions were independent risk factors for surgical recurrence. Postoperative thiopurine treatment significantly reduced the incidence of surgical recurrence.
