The purpose of this study is to identify the significance and process of self–discovery of human true self. The methodology involves a phenomenological case study, based on Object Relations Theory, Logotherapy, and Literature Therapy. Despite his professional success, the middle–aged participant has been suffering from psychological hardships. He believes that the primary problem of his family of origin is its failure of embedding the significance of life in his value system. His family’s constant demand of ‘having to stand out’ has driven him to feel lost until his 50s. Two main categories are found from his life history, ‘Power’ and ‘Lie’. His neurosis involves not only psychological but spiritual aspects. He has gradually opened himself to religion; the change of his heart heavily owes to people and thoughts from books. There was no dramatic turnabout in his story, yet it emphasizes how consistent efforts and soul–searching can change one person. 본 연구의 목적은 참자기 발견의 의미와 과정을 밝히는 것이다. 연구방법은 현상학적 사례연구이며, 대상관계이론, 의미치료, 독서치료이론을 배경으로 하였다. 참여자는 사회적, 직업적으로 성공한 중년남성으로서 부 콤플렉스, 모 콤플렉스, 불안 신경증으로 고통을 받았다. 참여자는 원가족이 강요한 ‘세상에서 잘나야 한다’는 요구에 매몰되어 살아왔다. 참여자는 삶의 의미와 가치를 전수해주지 못한 것을 원가족의 가장 큰 문제로 인식하였다. 참여자의 이야기로부터 ‘권력’과 ‘거짓’이라는 두 핵심주제가 발견되었다. 참여자의 신경증은 심인성(心因性)인 동시에 영인성(靈因性)의 성격을 지니고 있다. 삶에 의미와 가치가 있음을 믿는 것이 신앙이며 참자기 발견이다. 이러한 신앙적 회심은 점진적으로 이루어졌으며, 배우자의 수용과 책을 통한 인물과 사상이 영향을 미쳤다. 참여자의 이야기는 꾸준한 노력과 자기성찰이 참자기를 발견하는 길이 될 수 있음을 보여준다. 참자기란 존재의 근원인 신 안에서 가치와 의미를 찾고, 자기 안에 갇혀 있음으로부터 벗어남을 가리킨다. 이 바탕 위에 세계에 대한 관심을 갖는 일이며, 바로 이러한 방향전환을 가리키는 것임을 이 사례는 말해주고 있다.

The purpose of this study is to find out how so-called the 'Geese-Fathers' experience their family life. In general Geese-Fathers make money in Korea and send it to their family members for their living and children's tuition fee. Based on qualitative research, the research method uses in-depth interview. The subjects of the interview are 20 Geese-Fathers who are doctors, lawyers, professors, and businessmen, etc. The problem areas covered in the schedule included: who made the decisions to live apart from one another for their children's education; any changes after separation in physical, emotional, social, and economic conditions; how to cope with various hardships; how they communicate; how often they get together; are there any positive aspects when living alone?; how they expect their family would be like in the future? The author extracted 112 concepts, 35 subcategories, and 13 categories through open coding. The author named the core phenomenon 'To bring up my children well in spite of everything' and the causal condition 'The feeling of sameness of parents toward their children(Identity of Parents-Children)'. And the author named the contextual conditions 'Fear' and 'Negative experiences', and the intervening conditions 'The issues of Korean education systems', 'The recent trend', 'The characteristics of family members', and' Internationalization, globalization, and the spread of information technology'. And the action/reaction strategy is 'Living apart from one another(that means father staying in Korea, and mother and children staying abroad) for educating their children'. The consequences are 'Satisfaction of all family members', 'Enjoying the present situation', 'There is no other way than living apart in spite of Goose-Father's unsatisfaction', and 'Family disruption(including divorce)'. The author also suggested the core category and the story line. This study suggests that the Goose-Family is one of the variant postmodern family forms generated by individualization and globalization. The Goose-Family is a remote controlled family, and plastic family. This study suggests that in this postmodern world imbued with globalization and individualization, the pastoral carers and counselors should be prepared to meet the various kinds of family members' needs, and variant family forms themselves. The pastoral counselors and the church are supposed to offer them selfobject milieu in the ministry of presence.
