Sports and Exercise in the Era of Digital Transformation; The Rise of Online Training
Vol.26 No.3
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rapid expansion of digital fitness platforms has revolutionized the way people engage in exercise. The popularity of online training has surged, encompassing live-streaming classes, on-demand videos, and personalized online coaching[1]. Furthermore, social fitness, facilitated by fitness apps connected to social media, has seen a marked increase among younger generations. These platforms enable users to share fitness goals, compete with friends, and receive support, enhancing motivation and sustaining engagement in exercise. This editorial aims to explore these developments in greater detail. First, live-streaming fitness classes, utilizing platforms such as YouTube Live and Zoom, allow trainers to conduct real-time sessions where participants can actively engage[2]. This method offers a high level of immersion and immediate feedback, significantly boosting motivation[1]. Second, on-demand home training provides video content that users can conveniently access. Platforms like Peloton, Allblanc, and BODi offer a variety of exercise programs that users can follow regardless of time and location, leading to higher adherence rates. Third, personalized online coaching programs like Future, Fitple, and Quat Health-On leverage big data and AI to provide tailored online coaching. These platforms offer customized exercise plans and feedback based on individual health conditions and fitness levels[3]. One-on-one consultations with trainers enhance the effectiveness of these programs[4]. Fourth, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies are integrated into fitness training to create highly immersive environments. Users can enjoy engaging workouts in virtual spaces, which significantly increase motivation[ 5]. Companies like Kopin, Tonal, and WearVR internationally, and Golfzon, KT, and LG U+ domestically, are actively developing these technologies. In the near future, virtual fitness studios and real-time posture correction apps using AR will become commonplace, incorporating game elements to make exercise more enjoyable and motivating. Fifth, wearable devices such as smartphones, smartwatches, and fitness bands, in conjunction with apps like Samsung Health, Apple Fitness+, Strava, and Nike Run Club, allow users to track and analyze their workout data. Real-time monitoring and feedback enhance workout efficiency and goal achievement[6]. Apps like Nike Training Club and MyFitness-Pal cater to modern, busy lifestyles by offering flexible and efficient exercise methods. The integration of wearable devices will soon extend to comprehensive healthcare services, continuously monitoring vital signs and health data to provide holistic solutions. Finally, social fitness platforms enable users to share their fitness goals and achievements on social media, fostering communication and enjoyment in exercise. These platforms encourage motivation and support through community interactions and competitions. As these apps and platforms evolve, user interaction and community engagement will strengthen, with features like group workout challenges and online fitness events becoming more prominent. The future of digital fitness and online training is poised to become more diverse, driven by technological advancements and changing user demands. AI and machine learning technologies will enable more sophisticated AI trainers that automatically correct exercise form, analyze individual physiological responses, and provide optimized workout plans and real-time feedback. In the medical realm, integration with telemedicine services will allow healthcare professionals to remotely monitor exercise data, offering personalized exercise prescriptions and rehabilitation services[7]. This will be particularly beneficial for managing chronic conditions and facilitating rehabilitation. Furthermore, the emphasis on environmental sustainability will drive the development of eco-friendly exercise equipmen...

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the smoking cessation program for smoking adolescent males. Subjects were 88 smokers. Half were randomly assigned to the intervention group, and the rest was served as the control group. Intervention group received four sessions of smoking cessation education and a session of nutrition education. Both groups completed the questionnaire twice, before and after the program. Questionnaire included items for smoking status, smoking-related beliefs, nutrition knowledge, and food behaviors. T-test or x²-test was used to analyze the data using SAS. After the intervention, 12.2% stopped smoking in intervention group while there were no changes in control group (p<0.05). Intervention group also reduced the amount of smoking. With respect to beliefs regarding smoking, intervention group responded more negatively after the intervention on items including 'smoking causes sore throat', 'increasing the risk of cancer' (P<0.01). The beliefs regarding social influence or the perceived control over smoking in several situations were not different after the intervention. Nutritional knowledge was somewhat increased after the intervention, however, nutrition knowledge and food behavior were not significantly different between pre- and posttest in both groups. Further study might use more diverse approaches to smoking cessation for adolescent smokers.

Phased retirement systems of ageing in Europe are considered to contribute to the policy objective of longer working careers. In particular, Among a wide range of instruments, this article describes the Belgian career break system and the Netherlands life-course scheme. The Belgian career break system, which provides financial incentives for 50+ workers to reduce their working time by one fifth or by half, are assessed in detail. The Netherlands life-course scheme and some types of phased retirement schemes in other European countries are briefly described. We find that both system and scheme should be improved for the success of longer working careers.

[PURPOSE] The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of wearing compression stockings on number of repetitions, heart rate, exercise duration and iEMG. [METHODS] A total of 7 male students(22.0±2.8 yr; 174.0±5.8 cm; 75.2±11.0kg) who were free of lower extremity injury participated in this study. One and 10 RM of squats were measured. Five sets of 10 RM squats were performed with and without wearing compression stockings with resting intervals of 2 minutes between sets. Surface electrodes were placed over the rectus femoris and gastrocnemius muscles to measure muscle activation via iEMG. Paired t-tests and repeated ANOVA were conducted to determine differences between groups with statistical significance at p<.05. [RESULTS] The compression stocking significantly increased numbers of repetitions during the first 3 sets: 2.4(24%), 1.2(13.6%), and 1.3(16.7%), respectively. Significant differences were found between groups for the set 1-3(p<.01, p<.05, p<.05). However, there was no significant difference between groups in number s of repetitions during the set 4 and 5. Similarly, no differences were found in both groups during any of sets for the other variables: heart rate, exercise duration, and iEMG. [CONCLUSION] The compression stocking demonstrated an increase in number of repetitions, but had no changes in heart rate, exercise duration, and iEMG, which is related to efficiency of squat exercise.
