Demand for batteries is increasing day by day for portable electronic devices, EVs, and energy storage systems. Unfortunately, fire accidents caused by battery use are increasing in proportion to demand. Accord-ing to the well-known three-stage thermal runaway model, it is argued that the accumulated heat from vari-ous causes eventually contact with the flammable liquid electrolyte and causes a fire accident. If the car-bonate-based organic electrolyte, which is widely used commercially, can be replaced with a non-combustible material, it would be possible to effectively reduce a fire caused by a battery accident. Various solvents that can be used as a flame-retardant electrolyte are known, but each has its own limitations to re-place the currently commercialized carbonate electrolyte. We pointed out the limitations of ionic liquids and aqueous electrolytes at the present stage, and suggested ways to improve them. (1) Ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes with concentrated Li salt can ensure safe, highperformance Li metal batteries (LMBs) but suffer from high viscosity and poor ionic transport. A locally concentrated IL (LCIL) electrolyte with a nonsolvating, fire-retardant hydrofluoroether (HFE) is presented. This rationally designed electrolyte employs lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), 1-methyl-1-propyl pyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (P13FSI) and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) as the IL and HFE, respectively (1:2:2 by mol). Adding TTE enables a Li-concentrated IL electrolyte with low viscosi-ty and good separator wettability, facilitating Li-ion transport to the Li metal anode. The non-flammability of TTE contributes to excellent thermal stability. Furthermore, synergy between the dual (FSI/TFSI) anions in the LCIL electrolyte can help modify the solid electrolyte interphase, increasing Li Coulombic efficiency and decreasing dendritic Li deposition. LMBs (Li||LiCoO2) employing the LCIL electrolyte exhibit good rate capability (≈89 mAh g−1 at 1.8 mA cm−2, room temperature) and long-term cycling (≈80% retention after 400 cycles). (2) Sodium (Na)-powered rechargeable batteries (NRBs) are promising as sustainable energy storage systems. To overcome an inherent energy density handicap of NRBs, increasing cell voltage is necessary by building a Na metal battery (NMB), which simultaneously features coveted high-voltage stability and effi-cient Na dendrite protection. Although ionic liquids (ILs) are eligible to provide superior oxidative stability, their practical uses are challenging due to high viscosity and sluggish ionic transport at a higher Na concen-tration. Here, a localized Na+ ion concentrated ionic liquid (LNCIL) electrolyte consisting of an IL and a hy-drofluoroether (HFE) as cosolvents is developed. The addition of a non-solvating HFE lowers the viscosity and improves separator wettability, thereby facilitating Na+ ion transport. Furthermore, HFE dilution pro-motes the involvement of dual anions (FSI/TFSI) in the development of a protective solid-electrolyte inter-phase, leading to Na dendrite suppression. A Na||Na3V2(PO4)3 cell incorporating the LNCIL electrolyte demonstrates excellent cyclability (~96.6% capacity retention over 500 cycles). Moreover, with oxidative stability up to 4.9 V (vs. Na/Na+) and non-flammability, the LNCIL electrolyte ensures the safe operation of high-voltage NMBs. (3) Aqueous Li-ion batteries feature safe operation, low cost, and environmental friendliness, but suffer from narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of aqueous electrolytes. While exploiting high-salt-concentration strategy of water-in-salt electrolyte (WiSE) can improve the limited stability, the improvement is still insufficient to ensure practical feasibility of aqueous batteries. This talk reports that the co-use of two electrolyte additives can further expand the ESW of various WiSE systems. The synergistic effect between the two additives is attributed to the formation of unique solid-electrolyte interphase composed of organic and inorganic bilayers. The inner inorganic layer suppresses hydrogen evolution reaction, while the outer hydrophobic organic polymer mitigates SEI dissolution. LiMn2O4/Li4Ti5O12 cells employing 21 m LiTFSI WISE with dual additives exhibit good rate capability (110 mAh/g at 6 mA/cm2 at 25 oC) and long-term cy-cling (>70% retention after 400 cycles). The efficacy of the dual-additive approach is also demonstrated for other WiSE solutions including water-in-bisalt, hydrate melt, and aqueous/organic hybrid electrolytes, sug-gesting the general applicability of the dual-additive strategy.

In this study, sulfone based crystalline organic electrolytes (SCOEs) for sodium and potassium batteries have been presented. Their physico-chemical and electrochemical properties will be discussed with various characterizations. Also, their battery application results will be provided. In Chapter 3, SCOEs for sodium batteries were investigated. Owing to their mitigated safety risk and high energy density, all-solid-state sodium batteries are promising post-Li batteries. However, current solid-state electrolytes have insufficient ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, and contacting ability with porous electrodes. To overcome these issues, this chapter presents SCOEs composed of dimethyl sulfone (DMS) and sodium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (NaFSI). One particular SCOE (NaFSI/DMS, 2:8 by mol) has high ionic conductivity (7.0×10−4 S cm−1) at 25 °C and excellent oxidative stability (>5.5 V vs. Na+/Na). Importantly, the SCOE displays an optimum melting point (66 °C), enabling intimate contact with porous composite electrodes via the melt-casting process. Na||Na3V2(PO4)3 cells employing this SCOE show better cyclability than do cells employing a conventional carbonate electrolyte (capacity retention 91.1% vs. 60.3% after 200 cycles at 25 °C). Additionally, the SCOE has negligible flammability, unlike carbonate electrolytes, thus holding great promise as an electrolyte for safe, room-temperature operable all-solid-state sodium batteries. In chapter 4 deals with SCOEs for potassium batteries. Solid-state potassium batteries are promising energy storage systems, but their wide use requires suitable solid electrolytes to ensure high ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, and contacting ability with composite electrodes. For this purpose, this study introduces SCOEs consisting of DMS and potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI). One solid-state SCOE, KFSI/DMS 1:9 by mol, exhibits high ionic conductivity (4.0 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C), oxidation stability (~5.8 V vs. K+/K), Ph.D/ES 201954001 강 석 범. Seokbum Kang. Sulfone-based crystalline organic electrolytes for safe, high energy density solid-state sodium and potassium batteries. Department of Energy Science & Engineering. 2025. 106p. Advisors Prof. Hochun Lee, Co-Advisors Prof. Seung-Tae Hong. and negligible flammability. Moreover, owing to its optimal melting point (94 °C), the SCOE enables seamless contact with the composite electrodes through the melt-casting process, which has been challenging for other solid-state electrolytes. K||KVPO4F cells filled with this SCOE show improved cycle performance (capacity retention 88.8% after 100 cycles vs. 77.6% after 74 cycles at 25 °C) with high Coulombic efficiency (asymptotic value 99.6% vs. 92.0%) compared to cells with a conventional carbonate electrolyte. With these results, the developed SCOE paves the way to room-temperature operable, 5 V solid-state potassium batteries. In chapter 5, studies about free-standing sulfone-based solid-state electrolyte (FSSE) for Prussian blue (PB) batteries will be discussed. PB and its analogues are emerging cathode materials for potassium batteries due to their 3D open framework allowing facile ion diffusion. However, crystal water, an inherent component of PB structure, can be released into the electrolytes especially during high voltage operation, causing detrimental side reactions and rapid degradation of potassium batteries. To address this challenge, we present a FSSE comprising KFSI, DMS, and UV-cured trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate network. The FSSE effectively prevents the release of crystal water from PB cathode while exhibiting suitable electrolyte properties including decent ionic conductivity (2.2 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C), exceptional oxidative stability (~4.8 V vs. K+/K), and intimate contact with porous composite PB electrodes. K||PB cells utilizing FSSE demonstrate superior cyclability compared to a liquid carbonate electrolyte (74.6% vs 53.3 % capacity retention over 200 cycles). The solid-state electrolyte possessing the ability to block crystal water provides a promising avenue for exploring diverse PB cathode materials for high-voltage potassium batteries. A highly conductive electrolyte is an essential requirement for state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries. However, the delicate interplay between ionic conduction and the microscopic solution structure of battery electrolytes remains elusive. For this, it is imperative to understand the ion–ion and ion–solvent interactions governing the ion transport behavior of the electrolyte solutions to enhance the performance limit of electro-chemical devices. To meet the expectation of the advanced battery systems, it is mandatory to develop in-novative functional electrolytes ensuring stable, fast operation of LIBs. The rate capability of LIBs heavily depends on the mass transport rate in the electrolytes, which is largely dependent on ion-ion and ion-solvent interactions. Nevertheless, our understanding of the solution structure and its relation to ion transport behav-ior still remains at a premature stage. Therefore, solution structures and their ion conduction behaviors have been studied in this work. Firstly, the most widely used carbonate-based electrolytes were investigated. Despite similar physico-chemical properties of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC), the ionic conductivity of their Li-salt solutions displays large disparity, of which origin remains elusive. We herein investigate the corre-lation of the conduction behavior with the solution structure of DMC and DEC electrolytes and their ethylene carbonate (EC) mixtures of 0.1–3.0 M LiPF6 using Raman spectroscopy, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS), and pulsed-field gradient NMR (PFG-NMR) spectroscopy. We reveal that polar DMC conformer is formed more readily than DEC conformer, leading to enhanced Li-salt dissociation and thus high ionic con-ductivity in DMC solutions. It is also confirmed that the conformational isomerism is facilitated the most in DMC/EC electrolytes. Secondly, the ionic speciation and conduction behavior in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) electrolytes of 0.1–2.0 M LiPF6 and LiBF4 were examined using Raman spectroscopy, DRS, and PFG-NMR spectroscopy. This study elucidated the impact of solvent characteristics on ionic conductivity. Notably, LiPF6-DMSO, which had the highest dissociation in DMSO solvent, showed the lowest conductivity, but LiBF4-DMSO exhib-ited higher ionic conductivity with low salt dissociation. A DMSO, a solvent with a large donor number (DN), ion motilities become a dominant factor in ion conductivity than the salt dissociation. In addition, in most of the cases, lithium ions were transported by the vehicular mode, only except for the highly concentrated LiBF4-DMSO. These results provide insight into the solution structure and the interaction of the salt/solvent. Lastly, hopping conduction was intentionally induced by engineering the solution structure. High power performance becomes important for LIBs, so the fast Li-ion transport in electrolytes is in urgent need. To date, the ionic conduction in non-aqueous electrolytes has been described by the vehicle-type migration mechanism. However, recent studies suggest that ion-hopping can emerge in highly concentrated solutions. The adequate solvents having multiple coordinating sites, which establishes the so-called solvent-bridge struc-ture, have been one of the necessities for hopping conduction. However, this study reports the presence of Li-ion hopping conduction even in dilute solutions with monodentate acetonitrile (AN). We investigate the con-duction behavior and ionic speciation of AN solutions of 0.1 – 6.0 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (LiFSI) and lithium trifluoroacetate (LiTFA), representative dissociative and associative salts, using PFG-NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and DRS. PFG-NMR measurements show that the self-diffusion coefficient of Li-ion is faster than that of the anion in LiTFA-AN, whereas the opposite trend is observed in LiFSI-AN. Ra-man and DRS analysis elucidates that the faster Li-ion diffusion in LiTFA-AN is attributed to the Li-ion hop-ping conduction. Li-ion hop-ping is enabled by the unique anion-bridge structure driven by the highly associa-tive nature of LiTFA. The implication of the hopping conduction is demonstrated for LiFePO4 symmetric cells. The 4 M LiTFA-AN exhibits better rate performance than the 1 M LiTFA-AN despite lower ionic con-ductivity and high viscosity. This study challenges the conventional wisdom that associative Li-salts are un-suitable for battery electrolytes, and encourages to revisit numerous Li-salts unexploited so far due to their associative nature.
