Informal learning is learning that takes place in the realm of life as learning in various social activities that are not formally structured or institutionalized that can be experienced in everyday life. This informal learning is caused by learners who voluntarily seek educational and learning opportunities through SNS to enable various learning and continuous growth needed for personal lives of adults. In particular, informal learning is the biggest change in the educational community among the overall changes in society due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However research on informal learning in adults using SNS has not been actively conducted. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify informal learning using SNS in daily lives though ‘Reading economic newspapers’ hosted by SNS Instagram @goldrabbit21c(goldrabbit) to identify the effects of adult learners’ characteristics and learning motivations on activity sustainability. This study conducted independent sample t-test, one-way dispersion analysis, and multiple regression among 179 adult learners who participated in ‘Reading Economic Newspapers’ on Instagram, from April 1, 2020 to April 30, 2020. The results of the study are as following. First, the learners that participated in SNS were higher educated women in their 30s and 40s and mainly used Instagram to understand economic phenomenon and take advantage of investment opportunities. Second, learners recruited from SNSs had no significant mean differences in demographic characteristics. Third, learning-oriented motivations did not show significant effects during learning motivations, but activity-oriented motivations and goal-oriented motivations showed significant effects on activity substantiality, and out of the two, activity-oriented motivations were found to have a greater impact. Forth, after conducting additional interviews with age groups with low recruitment, it was confirmed that informal learning though SNSs could be sustainable because learning though SNSs shows ‘knowledge’ and ‘practice’ in areas where economic education could not fully provide. This study has implications and significance in that it psychologically analyzes the sustainability of learners’ activities at a time when interest in learning and education increases on SNSs. Main Topic Terms : Social Media informal learning, motivations for learning, substantiality of activities, reading economic newspapers, adult learners

The importance of civil education in the theory and practice of the lifelong education is going higher, but it is still very slow both in theorical research and civil participation in the real field. Most of researches on civil participation education takes quantitative approach that is based on statistics, on the other hand qualitative research only shows the current status not making another step of problem-solving. This leads to the request on a follow-up study of theorizing civil participation education based on the field practice. There are no specific methodologies or messages to explain how civil participation could work in the actual field of lifelong education. What we call the citizen-led learning and learner-centered way of learning only stays at a declarative level currently, but nothing substantial. Unlike most of lifelong learning centers run by each of local government, Suwon Lifelong Learning Center is where learner-centered learning is taking place with awakening contents toward their lives and mutual learning is happening among citizens who are also willing to try and learn things in an innovative way. A civic organization of ‘The hope Institute’ took over the authority of running Suwon Lifelong Learning Center in October, 2011 and this has been spreading positive impacts to the other learning centers in Korea as Suwon Lifelong Learning Center was recognized through prominent activities of ‘School for everyone’, ‘School for anything’. However, there was a lot more participation into the hobbies, certificate courses, and job trainings, rather than its participation in learning humanities designed for the citizens and this is how we started melting humanities into civil learning at Suwon Lifelong Learning Center since 2015 and the reason we created a civil project group. The purpose of this research is to find out lesson and learned from the education perspective and also to be able to positively contribute to the level of civil participation in the actual filed of learning by looking into the process of becoming one genuine group of learning and also doing the analysis on how civil-centered learning is being extended. This study will be able to answer the following questions of “ what is the critical view that has led to create a civil project group?, how is the process of implementing it?, and how can the level of civil participation in learning be extended?” and following lists are the references for this research; Humanity learning, Flip learning, Dialogism of Bakhrin and Arendt’s learning through the discussion, and so on. The author of this research, myself, as a doer in the lifelong learning filed was looking back the experiences at Suwon Lifelong Learning Center from June, 2015 to 2020 considering the action itself to be the process of this research. This is the action research owned by practitioner exploring oneself for the study and applying the process of spiral circulation of planning, acting, observing, re-planning. This research has begun by raising questions on the learning trend of just attending the famous lectures and along with the vision of Suwon Lifelong Learning Center focusing on learner-centered learning, we have civil project group, ‘COMPASS’, ‘Yoo-Too-Kong’ who watch video contents in YouTube and discuss one another, and end up with ‘Jak-Kong-Dang’ where people create learning cluster online. The consequence of civil project group’s activities has stepped forward to planning one’s life and they learn from one another through the discussion and finally get to the creative self-evolution finding oneself by connecting to the society. This study shows how civil project group is enabling to extend the level of civil-led learning along with the way of center operation, the autonomy that working-level person can have within the organization, thoughts that are breaking from the traditional programs, faith in intellectual equality, and the power of learning community among citizens. This study is the circulative process of proving the theory of lifelong learning in the field and theorizing again based on accumulated experiences, and it also has shown the great significance since this is an action research based on the actual records that working-level peopole in the field of lifelong education and citizens have been creating together in the lifelong field.
This purpose of this study is to expand the lifetime educational horizon of media literacy by exploring how media activities of middle-aged adults affect the development of democratic citizenship, by revealing the significance the literacy of the media as a factor in development democratic citizenship in the lifelong learning area, and by providing the basis for activating media literacy. Today, the development of medical technology has increased the average life expectancy, which has increased beyond the previous years, bringing new light to the importance and meaning of the middle-aged adults. In the conventional life cycle theory, middle-aged adults are the turning point of life, and if the transition is successful, older adults later in life will also lead to a successful. The selection of participants was made up of five middle-aged adults, an analog generation who have been continuously engaged in media activities for more than three years. In particular, research participants are the baby boomers, who grew up through fierce competition because of their age-based population. The qualitative case study method found the common and different points of meaningful statements in the overall context, summed up the unit of meaning, and repeatedly reviewed, modified, supplemented and analyzed when it felt that context lacked logic in the process of organizing meaningful statements. In summary, the results obtained from this study are as follows. The contents of the research participants' development of democratic citizenship through media activities are as follows. In the 'media education' stage, research participants from the analog generation had a new experience in acquiring opportunities for self-expression. When conflicts were encountered during the "planning" stage, they were free to share opinions regardless of age and gender, and they were removed from authoritarianism through open communication. During the "shooting" stage, he looked at the world through camera lenses and became an active producer of expanded responsibility and social practice. In the "edit" stage, the public nature expanded and the view changed as people became aware of contemporary problems through the experience of others on the screen, cutting them finely by frame. Finally, people working together in the "sharing" stage shared opinions, modifying and supplementing the entire process, and taking the opportunity to reflect on themselves. Viewers' empathy and comments are one of the big factors in sustained media activity. The interaction of relational expansion has led to interest in other people's lives and increased frequency of social participation. Based on this, the results of the analysis of the relationship between the media literacy and democratic citizenship are as follows. First, research participants wanted to express their thoughts freely through the media. The foundation for active and active activities was laid by connecting with opportunities to express one's stories voluntarily and communicate with others through media activities. Social networking services have shown that open communication and self-expression with various people is the use of media as a social tool. This is an example of a process in which the access capacity of the media literacy expands from a democratic citizenship perspective and changes to an active producer. Second, research participants became interested in social issues that they had never known before and began to practice. In the community, I have come to recognize that media should not be used simply, but should be used to work together to solve social problems beyond their own problems. This shows that from a democratic citizenship perspective, media literacy's critical understanding extends and is the junction of open communication and social participation. Third, research participants wanted to expand their media activities to a deeper and more meaningful topic than now. This is about re-awareness beyond the traditional perception of the media. It's not just about learning the media through re-aware. It uses the media in a public sense to induce social participation. This shows the full spectrum of media literacy's ability to participate in society from a democratic citizenship perspective and social participation meeting. Continued media activity has shown a development in democratic citizenship. In the early days of the media career, the focus was on developing individual skills, but not on one's own over time, but on communicating freely with others. And as they expressed themselves, they became an active producers, and increasingly they participated in society. Particularly notable was the further development in democratic citizenship of the study participants who produced the news report. In other words, it can be seen that the content produced also influences the development of democratic citizenship. Media activities have affected not only the ability of the media to access, communicate, critical understanding, and social participation skills for all research participants, but also their attitudes, such as activity, collaboration and accountability. Based on these findings, the following implications were presented for the development of democratic citizenship among middle-aged adults who participated in media activities. First, through continuous media activities in daily life, we were able to find ourselves in the process of interaction, recognize others, and recognize the importance of communities. They showed that they could experience social problems beyond personal attention. Second, more and more middle-aged adults are doing media activities. Further research on middle-aged adults is needed to activate media literacy in the lifelong learning area. Third, it is necessary to have support and interest in lifelong learning so that middle-aged adults can systematically and actively engage in media activities. Middle-aged adults who have participated in media activities have shown a rise in democratic citizenship by breaking away from authoritarianism that has been cemented throughout their lives, actively participating in society. They showed that even become older adults, they could become active producers through open communication and become a generation of voluntary social participation.
This study explored the potential of picturebooks, traditionally recognized as a medium for children, as a learning medium for adult learners by examining adults’ learning experiences. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research investigated how participants’ experiences and meaning-making changed throughout picturebook-based learning activities and identified the distinctive characteristics of picturebooks that facilitated these processes. A qualitative case study design was adopted. Two adult learners were selected as research participants and engaged in an eight-session picturebook-based learning program. Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth individual interviews and were analyzed using qualitative methods. The findings revealed three major themes. First, participants projected their life experiences and emotions through interactions with the expressive elements of picturebooks, constructing personal meanings based on their own lived experiences. Second, the picturebook-based learning activities encouraged participants to critically reflect on their existing assumptions and stereotypes, while promoting transformative learning by extending their reflections into social practice. Third, participants’ epistemological transformation was not solely the result of their internal cognitive responses but was closely associated with the inherent multimodality of picturebooks. Specifically, the interaction between images and text, the multilayered use of color and material signs, metaphorical devices and narrative gaps, and the open-ended interpretive structure functioned as key mechanisms that fostered reflective thinking by connecting with learners’ life experiences. Overall, this study demonstrates that the distinctive expressive features and interpretive openness of picturebooks enable them to function as an effective learning medium for adults by facilitating self-understanding and the reconstruction of lived experiences. Furthermore, the findings suggest that intersubjective dialogue within non-competitive book discussions provides a learning environment in which adult learners’ personal experiences and unique contexts can be most authentically expressed while exploring possibilities for transformative learning. These findings contribute to the field of lifelong education by expanding the educational potential of picturebooks beyond children's literature and highlighting their value as a meaningful medium for adult learning. Nevertheless, as this study is based on a qualitative case study involving a small number of participants, its findings are not intended to be generalized. Future research involving more diverse groups of adult learners is therefore recommended.
This study aims to develop an innovative model of higher continuing education that focuses on community-based practical learning in a rapidly changing social context characterized by globalization, knowledge-based economy, and demographic changes. To achieve this, the researcher analyzed the case of LEINN(Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and INNovation) of business department at Mondragon University, where students learn by establishing and operating actual business projects. Specifically, the researcher conducted qualitative research on Korean learners through the Seoul Lab of LEINN case study. The main findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, five core learning elements of LEINN were identified: team companies functioning as both business entities and learning communities, real-world business execution, dialogue-based team learning, learning journeys abroad, and a global community of learners sharing the same identity across domestic and international locations. Additionally, three learning characteristics of LEINN were founded: common goals that foster collaborative learning, regular dialogue for reflecting on practical actions, and organic connection between individual and collective learning that promotes both personal and group growth. Second, based on the analysis of the LEINN case, the researcher created the PKC(Practical Knowledge Creation) model, focusing on 'practical knowledge' and 'collective learning' as core elements of the new learning model. Through the LEINN case, the researcher presented the possibilities of collective practical learning and derived the conditions necessary for the learning model to function. The analysis of the LEINN case revealed three distinctive features of practical knowledge creation learning. First, learning occurs in groups that exist in an intermediate zone between businesses and learning communities. Second, learners and instructors assume new roles beyond traditional knowledge receivers and providers; learners become knowledge producers while instructors serve as learning facilitators or knowledge midwives. Third, there are no boundaries in terms of learning time and space. The conditions necessary for the PKC model include multi-dimensional learning fields and learning facilitation scaffolds. The multi-dimensional learning fields comprise four areas: the collective group domain for reflecting on practice, the domain for inter-project mutual learning in the group, the domain connecting individual learners and projects, and the domain for real-world experience in the external world. Four learning facilitation scaffolds were identified: common goals driving strategic thinking and practical learning, feedback as investment in individual and team growth, reflective dialogue transforming personal experiences into collective knowledge, and experiences of various leadership positions conducted cyclically and practically. Finally, the researcher developed the PKC model by applying these derived conditions necessary. The learning process in the PKC model involves learning units - individual learners, projects executed by individuals, and groups of projects - generating knowledge through reflective dialogue based on practice. The PKC model can function when three domains - practice, knowledge, and creation - are organically connected as practice-knowledge, knowledge-creation, and creation-practice. In conclusion, the PKC model proposed in this study for higher continuing education has the following implications. First, in the era of lifelong learning, higher continuing education must gradually shift its perspective on knowledge "from possession to creation." Second, it presents the possibilities of "formal certification framework of practice" and "systematization of collaborative learning processes." Ultimately, the significance lies in proposing a learning model that enables "learning to live together" through social interaction, rather than maintaining an environment where learners exist in isolation.
The purpose of this study is to explore the transformative learning experience of humanities learning clubs as a way to achieve sustainable development of our society, analyze them in the framework of grounded theory, and reveal the internal dynamic structure of transformative learning clubs. To achieve this, the research was conducted with 11 participants from 'Godeok's Joy' a humanities study circle for mothers in the Godeok District, Gangdong-gu, Seoul. The researcher, as the operator of 'Godeok's Joy' recruited participants through a local mom's cafe in November 2019 and has been running the study club through the Naver Cafe platform until July 2023. This research is based on the study club's activities from December 2019 to June 2023 and interviews conducted from October 2022 to March 2023. The main findings of this study can be summarized as follows. Firstly, as a result of analyzing and placing the 'transitional learning experience of humanities learning clubs' as a central phenomenon, the research findings revealed causal conditions such as 'desire to read books', 'fulfillment of intellectual curiosity', 'desire for diverse social interactions' and 'voluntary and active participation'. Contextual conditions included 'desire for personal growth', 'maternal experiences', 'temporal and mental flexibility due to children's growth', 'financial capacity', and 'previous experience in other study circles'. Mediating conditions comprised 'leader together', 'five-step enrollment process', 'invisible norms', 'minimal financial burden', 'systematic collaborative learning plans', 'autonomous participation activities' and 'active implementation and practice'. Their action/interaction strategies were derived from 'tail-bite conversations from various perspectives', 'self-reflective learning through one's own stories in humanistic conversations', 'sympathetic and positive support', 'frequent communication using SNS', 'learning through listening and observation' and 'learning to exist'. The results were 'self-reflection and self-realization through transitional learning', 'building dynamic and balanced object mobile', 'slow, steady, and together learning embodiment' and 'building a life-combined learning community with rhizome structure'. Secondly, the transformative learning study club under investigation has undergone growth and development through four stages: 'formation stage', 'adaptation stage', 'transformative learning stage', and 'expansion stage'. Based on the operator's collaborative learning plan, invisible norms such as problem-solving cognitive perception, avoiding unnecessary personal exchanges, active listening, positive responses, and proactive execution emerged. The participants adapted autonomously to these invisible norms, leading to the establishment of organic and loosely formed relationships. The participants composing the study club were identified as key elements that drove the internal dynamics of the transformative learning study club, forming the 'systematic collaborative learning planner', 'conveyor of new learning information', 'assertive implementer', and 'passionate follower'. This resulted in the formation of autonomous and flexible 'objet mobile' and demonstrated a dynamic yet balanced internal dynamic. Thirdly, the humanities study club that originated as a book club achieved self-growth through 'dialogic relationships' and formed 'objet mobile' with diverse participants, leading to a shift in perspectives on learning, relationships, and roles. Moreover, within the organic and loosely formed relationships, much like cells differentiate within an organism, the circle continuously generated subgroups, thus constructing a lifestyle-integrated learning community with 'rhizome structure' in daily life. Through these observations, the expanding nature of lifelong learning was revealed, substantiating the effectiveness of the internal dynamics of transformative learning study clubs as facilitators of sustainable development in our society. In this way, the dialogic relationships, objet-mobile relationships, and rhizome relationships that emerged in the research on the internal dynamics of the new transformational learning circles have precedent and substantial meaning as motifs of new trend learning communities for the MZ generation that will be poured into the future. The exploration of the inner dynamics of transformative learning circles reveals a community-based transformative learning process. In addition, it is meaningful that the principle of community field composition of lifelong learning is presented as a social network of lifelong learning is formed through ‘objet mobile’ formed based on the activeness of the participants and each other's empathic and positive support.

The purpose of this study is to explore the changes in the lives of middle-aged married women who experienced career interruption by participating in lifelong education activists. For this, What is the context of middle-aged married women's participation in lifelong education practice activities? What did middle-aged married women experience through lifelong education practice activities? What are the changes and growth of middle-aged married women through lifelong learning experiences? The research questions were set and the research was conducted. A qualitative case study method was applied to analyze the experiences of middle-aged married women in lifelong education practice. Seven middle-aged married women in their 40s and 50s who are participating as lifelong education activists at Osan Citizen College for 100-years were selected for research, and data were collected and analyzed through in-depth interviews. The results of the study analyzing the lifelong education practice experience of middle-aged married women are as follows. First, the context in which middle-aged married women participated in lifelong education activities at Osan Citizen College for 100-years was analyzed in terms of external and internal conditions. The external condition was a dilemma of time leisure due to the growth of the child, and the inner condition was to challenge finding a social role for self-realization. Considering the aspect of choosing activities that allow work and family life to be balanced and free use of time, it was also found that childcare and family remain responsibilities that cannot be escaped by middle-aged married women. Next, the learning experiences of middle-aged married women in lifelong education practice activities were analyzed as follows. The results were ‘knowing the role of a lifelong education activist’, ‘acquiring professional competence as a lifelong education activist’, ‘forming a social network’, ‘establishing a mutually beneficial relationship of mutual trust’, and ‘The dilemma of activity pleasure and activity sustainability’. Through the analysis, it was found that the activity itself is a learning process. It could be understood that the learning experiences as lifelong education activists continued to expand and circulate as they continued to practice lifelong education and accumulated experiences. As he became aware of his social role and recognized his identity as an activist, he was gradually developing his competence as a lifelong education expert. As the activity continued, the social network was expanding, and a dynamic cycle of pleasure in activity continued to occur while establishing a reciprocal relationship. Finally, changes and growth in the lifelong education practice experience of middle-aged married women were analyzed. For middle-aged married women, the experiences of lifelong education activists were 'growth as a subject learner', 'growth as an inclusive citizen', and 'growth as a lifelong learning practitioner'. First, 'growth as an independent learner' was analyzed as 'a transformation of perception that breaks the frame', 'increasing self-confidence through achievement experiences', and 'expansion of learning, career exploration'. For middle-aged married women, the challenge as a lifelong education activist served as an opportunity to change the perception that broke the mold. The new challenge led to learning to break the prejudices and stereotypes that he had in the past. In addition, the successful experiences that they hosted and challenged themselves in the activity experience gave middle-aged married women the vitality of life and the confidence that they could do anything in the future, so that they could grow as independent learners. It was also found that they wanted to expand into a more profound and meaningful career based on their lifelong education experience. Second, ‘growth as an inclusive citizen’ was analyzed as ‘change through relationships’, ‘improvement of inclusive understanding’, and ‘cultivation of a sense of community’. Lifelong education activists who participated in this study were learning through relationships. Middle-aged married women who lived only within the boundaries of their families can see them grow up as inclusive citizens who live together, building a sense of community that 'I want to live well together, not just for myself,' through lifelong education practice activities in the local community. Third, 'growth as a lifelong learning practitioner' was revealed as 'learning practice at home', 'good influence in the local community'. As middle-aged married women participated as lifelong education activists, they communicated with their families by practicing what they had learned at home, and experienced changes in the family as they received recognition as active mother and wife. In addition, these middle-aged married women act as civic activists who are active in the local community, playing a role as a link to the local learning network. It was revealed that middle-aged married women are contributing to the development of lifelong learning in the region as lifelong education activists who practice lifelong learning. Based on these results, the following conclusions were drawn by discussing the meaning of lifelong education practice activities, in which middle-aged married women acquire social roles and play a role in finding their identity, and the possibility of continuing activities. First, middle-aged married women want to use their spare time for themselves as their children grow. Second, the activities of middle-aged married women become vitality of life. Third, lifelong education practice activities are opportunities for realizing the desire for self-realization. Fourth, for middle-aged married women, the experience of lifelong education practice is a learning journey to prepare for the next stage of life. Fifth, lifelong education practice activities expand a new social network. Sixth, middle-aged married women grow up as local citizens as lifelong learning practitioners through lifelong education practice experiences. This study is meaningful in that it is a study that deals with the subjective changes and growth experiences of middle-aged married women through lifelong education practice activities.
