Modern and contemporary scenography is the beginning of symbolism practiced by Gorden Crag and Adolphe Appia rejecting the methods of producing theatre that intend to depict objectively and respect reality, namely, reacting to realism. From them, scenography had the meaning of existing as an artist in charge of performing environment of theatre art as creative visual language interpreted by scenographers breaking from stage area that had existed as background function for performing dramatic art. The use of the term ‘Scenography’ was named by Josef Svoboda who succeeded and developed the idea of Crag and Appia, the concept of which was that it should create the overall environment of dramatic art in charge of visual expression such as stage, lights, costumes, props and make ups not that it exists as representation of place for performing dramatic art. Realistic expressive style that scenography traditionally had shows modernity as extended idea from symbolic style, which accords with the features of modernism trend revealed in different time and space art such as literature, art, music, for that reason, the trend term ‘modernism of scenography’ is newly named in this study. The recovery of the mechanic facilities developed by war technology after the World War 2 progressed introduced in architectural designing of ravaged theaters, especially the hydraulic machine and electricity was used to build the active environment of stage setting. This made many stage technology need not physical labor of human any more and become modern and contemporary drama space that has sufficient physical condition for new and experimental expression of scenographer using kinetic energy. Modern and contemporary scenography after war passed through incessant changing procedures taking experimental form of expression to overcome the limitation of traditional dramatic art and Achim Freyer and Robert Wilson who expressed scenography as non-verbal drama space without depending on text can be discussed. Achim Freyer opened painterly scenography that has distinct characteristics of time and space moving to drama space without stopping the painterly technique at visual performance of plane work. Robert Wilson did scenography of image theatre viewing letters in the text as image, drew scenes that came to mind for performing dramatic art, connected several paintings based on that drawings making overall drama situation composed of paintings. Josef Svoboda and Robert Lepage extended form of expression of scenography adopting film language in performance considering drama space as language experimental place using film and cinematic technique. However, reacting expressive style emerged since the signs that acted as image to dramatic art and visual film language broke the linguistic essence and confused identity. Jerzy Grotowski sought for direction of plays practicing ‘poor theater’ to remove subsidiary set up mentioning retheatricalization of plays, Peter Stephen Paul Brook also tried to find essential duty of plays practicing ‘holy theater’ believing the importance of empathizing human elements through language excluding unnecessary artificial set up. Drama space created new stage language using media due to the development of science technology, and it can also be realized that text is replaced by performance text expressed on continuous time line not created in the hierarchial structure of dramatic art, escaping from the play, basic element of theatre. On the other hand, practiced style of ‘retheatricalization’ for the essence of theatre can be reviewed. The features and potential of modern and contemporary scenography are classified into 3 categories based on the discussion about the expressive style of modern and contemporary scenography in this study. First, extension of scenography through deconstruction a text. The central axis of theatre from ancient, middle age till modern times has been text and narrative and the objective of scenography has been moving the meaning of written and verbal language to visual image. However, scenography is to pursue the new stage language of creative behavior re-interpreting the text through deconstruction of traditional literature structure. Also, the performance of scenographer creating actively reflecting contemporary lives is need. Secondly, diversification of scenography expression through media. The existential status of pure art is missing in post-modern society while the meaning is created and the context is reconstructed making relationship with different arts. Scenography at this time should create aesthetic value of new sense and extension of expression. For that purpose, it should adopt variety of expression accommodating and using developed technology through media. Third, there is the dual aspect of scenography through returning to essence. Modern and contemporary scenography diversifying needs to contemplate the style that practice the suggestive theatre focusing on the play and actors removing artificial elements since they caused confusion of essential identity of theatre. However, it is important to have attitude that can think dialectically accommodating base and diversification simultaneously through incessant research about the essence of theatre by individual scenographer not exclusively accommodating experimental media escaping from dichotomous thinking adopting only this kind of return to essence. As scnenographer should provide the vision that expresses human view of the world through the expression of scenographer of their own since dramatic art is ‘one type of window’ watching human being.

A broad consensus on the Pluralistic Performing Arts can be made by analyzing the three keywords; Pluralistic Aesthetics, Pluralistic Arts and Pluralistic Attitude which were applied to the arts. This study includes cases on the Scenography Expressions tried in the pluralistic performing arts. The selected works are 『Violin Phase』 by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, 『Sleep No More』 by Punch Drunk, 『Glow』 by Chunky Move and 『The Tempest』 by Royal Shakespeare Company(RSC). The focuses of the works are summarized below; Violin Phase is the fusion of music, painting, and dance, focusing on the movement of Teresa especially, and the change of the floor pattern according to the development of Steve Reich's Violin Phase. Sleep No More derives the audience's sensory experience induced by the theater and stage composition, focusing on the concept of body perception in post-drama: the active use of other senses and body movement resulting from the limited vision by the controlled situation and wearing a mask. Glow is of the scene composition and the interactive performance characteristics which are divided into the expansion of space-time and the expansion of the human body, by developing the scene in Glow. The Tempest is of the stage composition and similar hologram system. Based on interviews with RSC scene designers Stephen Lewis, Intel, and Imaginarium studios, as well as research on related materials, the focus explained was how the physical composition of The Tempest's stage and digital image had been fused. The characteristics of the stage art expression of the pluralistic performing arts after this study are as follows; First, it is a multisensory expression. Violin Phase and Sleep No More contain a feature that induces the use of multiple senses; sight, smell, hearing, touch, etc. to express the work. Second, it is interactive. Sleep No More, Glow, and The Tempest contain features where the Scenography enhances the audience's sentiment by interacting with the actors on stage. Third, it’s by the use of fourth industrial technology which has come after the third industrial revolution. With the benefit of the new technology which is called the digital revolution, Glow and The Tempest aesthetically utilize the virtual characteristics of digital images to shape the immaterial images into concrete shapes.

The performing arts market, which had been suspended since the ‘With COVID-19 era’ began in April 2022, is revitalizing. Performing arts reflect the phases of the times, and scenography also step within totether. Since ancient Greece, theatre space has been composed of moving stage set, but the possibility of variable space expression increases through the combination of modern technology and media that have developed rapidly since World War II, and various expression methods are being studied. Variability is one of the important characteristics along with on-site and temporality, which are the main characteristics of the stage space. According to the variable expression of the stage, the play has liveliness and helps the audience immerse themselves. Therefore, this study aims to research the variable characteristics and expression methods within the stage space. To this end, among the various genres of performing arts, the case was narrowed down and studied focusing on the musical stage. The musical, which accounts for the highest ticket revenue among the domestic performing arts market, is a genre with strong popularity. In addition, it is appropriate to study the variable composition of the stage art space because it had a sense of rhythm and speed based on music and dance. Therefore, performances of modern musical genres since 2000 were selected as case studies, and analyzed their stage components and scenography. Based on research on the variable characteristics of modern space, the variably constructed stage form was classified into a ‘conversional, expandable and ambiguous stage’, and the corresponding cases were analyzed. As a result, an expression method that can be effectively applied in musical stage space was proposed. First, it is the diversification of scene through set transitions. Various theatrical meanings can be created through the movement direction, speed, and overlapping of movement in stage transition. Second, absorb the actor's body into the stage equipment. Using stage costumes and puppets consistently expressed with the concept of scenography, it is possible to express a fluid scenes with only small movements of the actors. Third, it is an expression of an expansion and contraction that utilizes the depth and vertical space of the stage. Using the over stage and under stage maximizes the spatial impression in the scene and directs the eyes of the audience to multiple points of view to add dramatic tension. Fourth, it is a method of expression using the visual style of scenography. Through the design application and conversion process using everyday materials, it is possible to create a visual style that reveals fluidity and variability through the stage itself. Fifth, multiple use of stage equipment through abstract expression. In order to express different theatrical places within limited space, it is possible to use it in various functions and forms by giving the ambiguity and uncertainty of space through the abstract expressive style. Sixth, it can be used in various ways without fixing the position of the stage. If the location of the basic stage is not fixed and the entire 360-degree space inside the theater is used, the audience can be surprised and diversified in their viewpoints. Seventh, as the stage equipment becomes a screen, real actors' movements and cinematic expressions can be combined. By combining video expression, a cinematic expression method, one of the modern art forms, and realism, the strength of performance, it is possible to create a fantastic expression that takes place in front of your eyes. Through this study, the function and development direction of the variable composition were presented. The reason why visual variability in scenic design is important is that stage art is difference from general painting and photography art, which helps the audience immerse themselves and builds a theatrical illusion that is realized only in front of the audience. The variable expression of the scenographic space will continue to develop by creating more diverse scene and lively plays through use of dynamic stages based on automatic theater system and combining with modern technologies such as video projection, holograms, AR, and VR.

The opera, one of the performing art fields, is the generalist art field of music, which is evaluated as the genre that included not only musical element but also all kinds of field such as literature, theatre, art, dances. The stage art that is relativelyfree and easy in the communication for meaning delivery included in it as the textual visual imagination of various structural elements that constitute the opera is the field that is in charge of central role to express some drama visually. Actually, it is being changed in the trend to search for visual symbolism in the general part of social art. In spite of it, in the opera stage setting constituted the trend that shows factually the time and space element was in main current. Many of visual elements inthe drama that were overlooked not the meaning as the background of stage setting to the general part of such cultural art were appeared over the surface, and the stage setting that fills the stage has become the new interest. The modern stage art is not the additional device. The empty space for the stage artists is as the same as a sort of canvass. They are the artists who do not describe the background of dramatist’s work factually, but creates the text of work as visual text in the same way. The visual image created by the stage artists has the same relation and function as the literacy of dramatist’s language and producer’s play. With the autonomy interpretation of the stage artists’ text for such change of stage art function, the attention of audience has moved to the luxury and new stage setting design from the drama’s own entertainment. Like this, with the visual image of performance being the central tool of new theatre, the stage setting figure and color has become the existence that contains more meaning than before, and because of this the stage setting located in the stage requires the constant reinterpretation for the new meaning, and various expressions and its plastic tools. Mozart called [Don Giovanni] as 「drama geo course」 It means the opera with comedy and tragedy. Differently from all kinds of Don Giovanni and his servant Leporello’s funny actions, the protagonist’ fearless and shameless words and actions emit their own attraction. And, by expressing the nature of humanity through different characters and by revealing their existence with tragedy and comedy, it reveals in detail the real aspect of personality. [Don Giovanni] is the best opera of Mozart that extends the drama with lively character and good music. Therefore, the writer analyzes and inquires the function and role of stage setting design through the detailed theoretical analysis of the opera [Don Giovanni] and its examples of performance. Based on such research result, it presents how visualize efficiently the stage setting of the opera [Don Giovanni]with the elements of color contrast, diagonal space, functional conversion of stage, and analyzes the result through the real performance. The stage art is the final result that materialized the work by the visual image through the understanding and analysis of stage designer’s work. Therefore, the future stage should not be limited to one figure, but explain efficiently the stage designer’s searching concept of work by visual image through the stage designer’s maximum use of knowledge and his new expression, and have the stage with not only the stage setting but also all the elements such as the actor’s acting, music, costume, illumination that make one performance in harmony.

Joseon Dynasty lasted for 519 years from Taejo Lee, Seonggye(太祖 李成桂, 1335 ~ 1408) in 1392 to Sunjong(純宗, 1874 ~ 1926) who was the last king in 1910. In the latter half year of Joseon Dynasty, the fast-changing era, people had to accept culture and products from the West from power invasion. This era is very important and meaningful because of its arts of performance in the last kingdom. The arts of performance in the latter half of Joseon Dynasty can be considered as court arts for kings and arts of folks for people. By establishing the first indoor theater, Korean arts of performance got a lot of changes in terms of its contents and forms. So, prospective studies are required to shed a new light on stage space and Scenography in modern Scenography by researching the process of stage space and Scenography development together as korean arts of arts and first indoor theater appeared and by studying korean traditional arts of performance in the latter half of Joseon Dynasty. Centered in modern times from the half latter of Joseon Dynasty, stage space for court ceremonies and stage space for entertainment yards have been studied. Regarding stage space for court ceremonies, Myeongjeongjeon Ouijinjeon Changgyeong palace and Naejinchan Jagyeongjeon Gyeongbok palace, centered in [Sunjogijukjunchaneuigue] in the 23rd King Sunjo(純祖:1800 ~ 1834) where the court ceremonies were prospered most have been analyzed. And the concept, the differences, and common points of entertainment yards have been analyzed. As a result of analysis, to convert general space of court into stage space, the stage could be extended by installing Bogye on Woeldae. The stage and audience site could be divided. Depending on host for the feast, the ways of dancing and singing and the installation of stage for performance might be different. The arrangement of seats were different depending on gender and status. While watching and performing dances and songs, the space for court ceremony converted into stage space. The stage space was square structure surrounded by three sides. The performance was conducted according to strict process of ceremony. On the other hands, stage space for entertainment yard was circular structure. There was no division depending on gender and status. The communication between audience and performers was considered important. Event stage, performance stage, etc. had different functional spaces. Scenography have been deliberated in terms of [The Degree of Service] by Ah, Geukdon in Joseon Sandae which had been passed since Chaemung in Gorye. Sandae means elevated stage background or stage itself. It symbolized the authority of King and stability of politics. And the reason why the figure of court theater disappeared is because the arts of performance which was invited to the court has been disappeared as Japan evaded and Joseon Dynasty collapsed. After the unification of Korea and Japan, the ownership of Kyeongbok palace was led to the colonial Japanese authorities. The art museum of the colonial Japanese authorities, new building of the colonial Japanese authority office, etc. made the true figure of palace and its function changed by Japan. As Changgyeong palace also opened tremendous zoo and green houses, the building of Changgyeong Palace disappeared. The name was changed into Changgyeongwon. Under the colony situation, the figure of our court theater which showed our buildings of our court and arts of performance also disappeared. The first indoor theater, Hyeopryulsa appeared, which was indoor permanent theater and at the same time the emperor house theater in 1902. Based on it, the modern type of play and the mode of performance arts started to be established. Adopting realism, the stage space was affected. Over the process of development, using background was tried in Scenography. It developed into realistic, cubical, and perspective background paintings. As professional Scenography artists appeared, the Korean modern Scenography faced new era. Recognizing stage space and Scenography in our excellent arts of performance, works to shed a light on Scenography and stage space newly in modern Scenography and to develop it are required over the establishment of the first indoor theater and the process of modern Scenography development.
