The cavitation noise generated from propellers is a major cause of underwater radiated noise in ships, and especially in the case of naval ships, it is closely related to the possibility of detection by submarines. Therefore, from the design stage, the required performance of the propeller is estimated, and a model propeller test is performed in a common tunnel. In the previous study, the location of cavitation was estimated by embedding the sensor in the upper hull of the propeller and applying the matching field processing technique used for estimating the source localization in the underwater acoustic field or inverting environmental factors. In order to apply the cavitation localization technique using the acoustic sensor to real ships, it is necessary to minimize the number of sensors to be installed on the hull in consideration of the process and cost. Therefore, in this study, the localization performance is improved by applying the forward neural network learning technique used in various fields to the cavitation localization technique using three acoustic sensors, which showed low accuracy in previous studies.

주요어 : 전방주시소나, 빔형성 기법, Delay&Sum, 군집신호처리 학 번 : 2018-38265 Forward Looking Sonar is a sonar mainly used in remotely operated underwater robots (ROV) or autonomous unmanned underwater robots (AUV) for navigation. Due to the installation condition of ROV or AUV, small size, low weight, and low-power operation are essential for forward looking sonar. The general beam forming technique for image acquisition of forward-looking sonar is the multi-sensor based Delay & Sum technique, mainly in some improved form. This study proposes a cluster signal processing technique for multiple sonar sensors that improves the Delay & Sum technique for the purpose of miniaturization and low-power use of forward-looking sonar. Unlike the Delay & Sum technique, which requires an ADC (Analog to Digital Conversion) for each sensor, the proposed cluster signal processing technique only requires ADC for two signal lines for the sum of signals grouped by four sensors. In addition, existing cluster signal processing techniques required physical or electrical phase changes for each sensor, but this research technique eliminated this circuit complexity. The developed beam forming technique introduced a method of removing the symmetric ambiguity of the existing cluster signal processing technique through phase difference for each group, and presented an actual experimental results applying this method. In addition, it is proven through numerical tests that it has the same resolution as existing signal processing techniques under the same sensor conditions. The results of this study can be used in the development of a forward-looking sonar that is low-power, compact, and light in weight compared to existing ones.

There are many pipes inside the ship, and the flow of fluid within these pipes generates noise. Because underwater radiated noise is a problem directly related to the survivability of ships, it is essential to install and operate a silencer that can reduce pipe noise. However, due to the confined space within the ship, the size of the silencer is limited. In such environments, absorptive silencers with excellent acoustic performance are commonly employed. In this study, the acoustic performance of a multi-layered absorptive silencer was enhanced by optimizing the arrangement of the absorbing materials. The acoustic performance of the silencer was evaluated through transmission loss, and finite element method-based numerical analysis program was employed to calculate the transmission loss. Polyurethane, a porous elastic material frequently used in absorptive silencers, was employed as the absorbing material. The Biot-Allard model was applied, assuming that air is filled inside the polyurethane. The acoustic performance affecting properties of the absorbing materials were investigated when it was composed as a single layer, and the acoustic performance of the single-layered absorptive silencer was examined based on standard material properties. Subsequently, an objective function was established for the multi-layered absorptive silencer, and the arrangement of the absorbing materials was optimized. The results demonstrated that the acoustic performance improved compared to the single-layered absorptive silencer.

    • Physics-Informed Neural Network-based Unmeasured Pressure Field Prediction for Ocean Acoustic Problems

      RANK : 247599

In underwater environments, acoustic waves can propagate longer distances compared to electromagnetic waves. Consequently, signal processing using acoustic waves, typically represented by SONAR (Sound navigation and ranging), predominates in ocean environments. The acoustic pressure field measured through hydrophones contains diverse information, which finds applications in various tasks such as sound source detection, localization, ocean acoustic tomography, and geoacosutic inversion. Forward modeling is essential to solve these inverse problems of estimating parameters from acoustic signals. In order to model the ocean acoustic wave field, accurate information about environmental parameters such as sound speed profiles, bathymetry, and sediment properties is required. However, the ocean is spatially vast and temporally variable, often resulting in situations with unknown or inaccurate environmental parameters. Geoacoustic parameters are notably difficult to measure directly, so inversion methods are commonly employed instead. However, these geoacoustic inversion methods rely on bottom models and require a certain level of prior knowledge about the seabed. Another challenge in solving inverse problems is a lack of experimental data due to expensive sea trials and limitations of small receiver sizes compared to vast oceans. In addition, the phase is significantly sensitive to even small range variation and is also influenced by the Doppler effect. Consequently, measuring precise phases in experiments is challenging, and degrades range-coherent processing. In order to overcome these limitations, this dissertation developed the method OceanPINN, which predicts an unmeasured acoustic pressure using a physics-informed neural network. OceanPINN utilizes a partially sampled pressure magnitude, with sound speed profile as prior information. OceanPINN does not require any prior knowledge of the bottom. The pressure field is transformed into a low-fluctuating envelope to facilitate the neural network training. OceanPINN is trained with this envelope and can generate the complex pressure field after training is completed. The validations against the simulation and experimental data verified the robustness of the proposed methods. OceanPINN can generate data at desired points with accurate phases, offering potential applications across various fields. In this dissertation, the generated data from OceanPINN is utilized for normal mode estimation. Range-coherent sparse Bayesian learning-based method estimates mode wavenumbers with OceanPINN-generated data. The accurate phase of generated data enhances range-coherent normal mode estimation, resulting in improved performance compared to the raw data. Though this dissertation addresses normal mode estimation as an example of application, the OceanPINN can be applied as a preprocessing method for various problems, such as geoacoustic inversion, direction of arrival estimation, and localization.

As the size of equipment mounted on the ship is enlarged, the cooling system to be mounted increases. So as the pipe noise increases, the noise inside the ship and underwater radiation noise(URN) increase. In this study, the acoustic performance of a dissipative silencer with excellent performace for size was predicted and analyzed using a numerical analysis method to reduce the pipe noise. To this end, the performance of the single expansion chamber silencer was verified using experimental and numerical analysis methods. In addition, a new experimental method was proposed by identifying the problems of the existing experimental method. The acoustic performance of the silencer was expressed using the transmission loss(TL), an indicator of its own performance, and the result was derived using the two-load method, which measured by changing the impedance at the end of the pipe. For the numerical analysis method, a general-purpose finite element analysis program was used, and the Delany-Bazley-Miki model with the flow resistivity of the sound absorbing material as an input parameter was applied. Finally, we compared the experimental and simulated results for each of the acoustic performances of the simple expansion type and the dissipative silencer to confirm the consistency of the results, and predicted and analyzed the simulation results for four classifications according to the properties of the sound absorbing material.

    • A Study on Underwater Acoustic Source Localization using Compressive Sensing-Based Approach

Three-dimensional acoustic localization is an essential process to analyze the underwater sound sources such as submarine, scatterer, marine cavitation. Traditional beamforming processors provide robust localization results, however, the results show a low-resolution result which only reveals one dominant source location. In order to obtain the high resolution localization results, compressive sensing(CS) based approaches have been used recently. CS technique is an effective way for acquiring, processing, reconstructing the sparse signal and has wide applicability to many research fields such as image processing, underwater acoustics and optimization problems. For localizing the underwater acoustic sources, CS-based approaches have been adopted in many research fields and have shown better localization performance compared to the traditional beamforming processors in terms of resolution. Despite the performance improvement in resolution, there are still problems that need to be resolved when using the CS-based method. First, the CS-based method does not appear to be robust compared with the traditional beamforming processors. CS-based method provides high-resolution results, however, it suffers from computational instability which hinders the stable reconstruction. Second, basis mismatch error hindrances estimating the exact source locations. Moreover, there is no basis mismatch estimation technique applicable to 3D source localization problem. This dissertation points out the limitation of conventional CS-based localization method and introduces the advanced CS-based localization method which deals with 3D source localization problem. The ``coherent multiple-frequency processing" is introduced to overcome the instability of solution induced by high correlation of spatial grids and ``flexible searching-grid technique" is introduced to solve the basis mismatch problem which is developed for 3D source localization problem. The suggested techniques provide more accurate localization results compared to traditional beamforming processors or conventional CS-based beamforming processors and the arguments are backed with actual experimental data which was conducted in a cavitation tunnel. Though underwater acoustic source localization problems are presented in this dissertation, the proposed technique can be extended to many research fields, such as radar detection, sonar detection, ultrasound imaging.

    • Data-Driven Type Classification and Localization of Acoustic Noises in Multi-story Reinforced Concrete Buildings using a Single Sensor

      RANK : 247599

The construction of multi-story residential buildings triggers indoor noise. Indoor noise in residential areas has been investigated to ascertain the effect of noise on occupants and to improve their quality of life. In buildings, indoor acoustic noise transmitted from various sources travels through these structures and exerts an unpleasant effect on occupants. Inter-floor noise is identified as a severe type of indoor noise in residential areas. The identification of noise is considered a fundamental step that is essential for studying the challenges of noise pollution. By harnessing a sound level meter, long-term measurement, and site surveying, previous studies have been conducted on the identification of noise in residential areas to estimate the level, type, and position of generated noise. However, it is challenging to identify the source type and position of noise travelling through multi-story residential buildings owing to the difficulty of the human ear in intercepting these sounds. Recent studies on the identification of indoor noise are limited to noise sources and receivers on a single level of the floor, and they require multiple sensor channels to determine the time difference of arrival. Residential buildings, which are usually reinforced concrete structures, are considered to be concrete, steel, and fluid-mixed media with high structural complexity and occupants that have insufficient knowledge of the details of their properties. In this study, we propose a data-driven identification of noise in reinforced concrete buildings via the learning-based localization method using a single sensor. Actual experiments were conducted in a campus building, as well as two apartment buildings. Performance was analyzed according to several source types and positions that apply the deep convolutional neural network (CNN)-based supervised learning. The validations against the datasets obtained in three buildings verified the generalizability of the proposed method. In addition, noise identification data transferred within different floor sections in a single building and between similar buildings were presented in this study. Although indoor noise identification is emphasized in this work, the proposed method can be beneficial for other noise identification methods that employ a single sensor.

Despite many efforts by global manufacturers to secure product quality, production defects due to various causes continue to occur. If defective products are delivered to consumers, this is an important problem that can damage corporate management by instantly destroying brand image in addition to direct cost. Recently, with the development of deep learning technology, many studies based on anomaly detection are being conducted in manufacturing sites. However, if you look at the related studies that have been recently studied, most of them deal with the surface defects of products through vision inspection or the state inspection of production facilities using vibration data. However, these methods are not suitable for application to audio products that deal with sound. In addition, it takes a lot of time and money to attach a sensor to apply it to quality inspection of products in a manufacturing industry that produces hundreds or thousands of units per day. In this paper, we present an end-to-end approach to sound classification that learns representations directly from raw audio signals using speaker output data measured by a single acoustic sensor and a synthetic product neural network. Seven convolutional layers are used to learn various filters related to the classification task of assembly defects. The dataset was collected through output data from multiple speakers, and it was shown that the knowledge learned from the output of some speakers can determine whether other speakers are defective, with 99% accuracy. The proposed assembly defect detection method shows higher performance than most methods that use the existing 2D representation as input. In addition, it has fewer parameters compared to other architectures, making it efficient for real-time product quality inspection. Through this study, it is expected that the assembly process defect rate will be reduced for product groups with speakers installed inside the product, such as TVs and AVNs for vehicles.

Recently, in the Navy, bistatics sonar is actively used in consideration of the limitations of target detection of monostatics sonar. The reception signal of bistatics sonar consists of reverberation, ambient noise, target signal, etc. In particular, reverberation is considered to be the most disturbing factor in operating active sonar. This is because the probability distribution of the reverberation sound and the level of ambient noise are analyzed to set an appropriate detection threshold, which can reduce the detection performance of the target or increase the probability of false alarm (PFA). In addition, as sonar systems develop into high-resolution performance, cases in which the probability distribution of reverberation deviates from the traditionally assumed Rayleigh distribution and show a K-distribution have been observed, and research on this is being actively conducted. In this study, the bistatics sonar reverberation performed in the East Sea marine experiment (shallow sea and deep sea environment) in two environments was analyzed. Reverberation sensor data was collected through a research vessel towing a LFM (Linear Frequency Modulated) sound source and a separate receiver, and analyzed in various ways after signal processing. Through geo-plot analysis, it was confirmed that the angle reflected from the sound source through the scatter to the receiver has a dominant effect on the distribution of the reverberation sound. In addition, using the Method of Moment Estimator and the K-S test (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test), we analyzed which probability distribution the data matched. As a result, it was possible to confirm the characteristics of bistatics sonar reverberation that the probability distribution of reverberation sound varies for each beam. In addition, it was observed that the probability distribution of the reverberation sound varied depending on the region. It was estimated that the reason was due to the difference in the RNR (Reveration to Noise Ratio) and the presence or absence of a scatterers similar to the targets.
