Designing Rehearsals for Secondary Preservice Teachers in Mathematics Methods Course
Kim, Yeon The Youngnam Mathematical Society 2018 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.34 No.4
This study identifies elements involved in designing rehearsals for improving preservice teachers' capacity to teach mathematics. Observation of a secondary mathematics methods course and regular interviews with the teacher educator following each class were used in this research. After characterizing what is considered and enacted in rehearsals as a way to help preservice teachers practice the work of teaching mathematics, I illustrate them with examples from the observations and interviews. I then discuss the challenge of dual contexts-the teacher education classroom and the secondary mathematics classroom-and dual perspectives-the mathematical and pedagogical-in designing and enacting rehearsals. I conclude with implications for mathematics teacher education.
CULTIVATION OF STUDENTS' CORE LITERACY BASED ON THE MATHEMATICAL CULTURE PERSPECTIVE
Nan, Hua,Tong, Shan,Xu, Yu The Youngnam Mathematical Society 2019 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.35 No.2
In recent years, the term core literacy has been popular in educational circles all over the world, and there are more and more research on core literacy. At the same time, the mathematical culture has also been highly valued on a global scale. The mathematical culture is a part of college students' cultural quality, and then, what is the connection between the mathematical culture and mathematical core literacy? How to improve the mathematical core literacy of contemporary college students? This paper gives the corresponding answers to these two questions. By illustrating the concrete implementation of the course "Mathematical Culture" offered by Yanbian University, this paper discusses various measures for cultivating students' core qualities in Chinese universities. It must be useful and promote the research on mathematical core literacy for the educators in various countries.
Kim, Young-Ok The Youngnam Mathematical Society 2013 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.29 No.2
The purpose of the study was to investigate the reality of middle school mathematics teachers' subject matter knowledge for teaching mathematical conjecture and justification. Data in the study were collected through interviewing nine Chinese and ten Korean middle school mathematics teachers. The teachers responded to the question that was designed in the form of a scenario that presents a teaching task related to a geometrical topic. The teachers' oral responses were audiotaped and transcribed, and their written notes were collected. The results of the study were compared to the analysis of American and Chinese elementary and secondary teachers' responses to the same task in Ball (1988) and Ma (1999). The findings of the study suggested that teachers' approaches to explaining and demonstrating a mathematical topic were significantly influenced by their knowledge of learners and knowledge of the curriculum they teach. One of the practical implications of the study is that teachers should recognize the advantages of learning the conceptual structure of a mathematical topic. It allows the teachers to have the flexibility to come up with meaningful mathematical approaches to teaching the topic, which are comprehensible to the learners whatever the grade levels they teach, rather than rule-based algorithms.
MATHEMATICAL MODELLING FOR THE AXIALLY MOVING MEMBRANE WITH INTERNAL TIME DELAY
Kim, Daewook The Youngnam Mathematical Society 2021 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.37 No.1
In [1], we studied the PDE system with time-varing delay. Time delay occurs due to loosening in a high-speed moving axially directed membrane (string, belt, or plate) at production. Our purpose in this work derives a mathematical model with internal time delay. First, we consider the physical phenomenon of axially moving membrane with respect to kinetic energy, potential energy and work done. By the energy conservation law in physics, we get the second order nonlinear PDE system with internal time delay.
MATHEMATICAL CONSTANTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE MULTIPLE GAMMA FUNCTIONS
Jung, Myung-Ho,Cho, Young-Joon,Choi, June-Sang The Youngnam Mathematical Society Korea 2005 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.21 No.1
The theory of multiple Gamma functions was studied in about 1900 and has, recently, been revived in the study of determinants of Laplacians. There is a class of mathematical constants involved naturally in the multiple Gamma functions. Here we summarize those mathematical constants associated with the Gamma and multiple Gamma functions and will show how they are involved, if possible.
MATHEMATICAL MODELING FOR THE OBESITY DYNAMICS WITH PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL FACTORS
Kim, Sehjeong,Kim, So-Yeun The Youngnam Mathematical Society 2018 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.34 No.3
We develop a mathematical model for the obesity dynamics to investigate the long term obesity trend with the consideration of psychological and social factors due to the increasing prevalence of obesity around the world. Many mathematical models for obesity dynamics adopted the modeling idea of infectious disease and treated overweight and obese people infectious and spreading obesity to normal weight. However, this modeling idea is not proper in obesity modeling because obesity is not an infectious disease. In fact, weight gain and loss are related to social interactions among different weight groups not only in the direction from overweight/obese to normal weight but also the other way around. Thus, we consider these aspects in our model and implement personal weight gain feature, a psychological factor such as body image dissatisfaction, and social interactions such as positive support on weight loss and negative criticism on weight status from various weight groups. We show that the equilibrium point with no normal weight population will be unstable and that an equilibrium point with positive normal weight population should have all other components positive. We conduct computer simulations on Korean demography data with our model and demonstrate the long term obesity trend of Korean male as an example of the use of our model.

The purpose of this paper is to establish the weak convergence theorem of Mann iterative sequence for nonexpansive mappings in probabilistic Hilbert spaces. In order to establish the weak convergence theorem, a new method was presented in this paper, that is method of mathematical expectation.
ON DUDEK'S PROBLEMS ON THE SKEW OPERATION IN POLYADIC GROUPS
Sokhatsky, Fedir M. The Youngnam Mathematical Society 2003 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.19 No.1
In his invited lecture presented during the First Conference of the Mathematical Society of the Republic of Moldova($Chi\c{s}in\v{a}u$, August 2001) W. A. Dudek posed several open problems on the role and properties of the skew element in the theory of n-ary groups. In this note we give the partial solutions of some of these problems.
Case Analysis of Modeling Lessons
Noh, Jihwa The Youngnam Mathematical Society 2019 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.35 No.2
This Modeling is a cyclical process of creating and modifying models of empirical situations to understand them better and improve decisions. The role of modeling and teaching mathematical modeling in school mathematics has received increasing attention as generating authentic learning and revealing the ways of thinking that produced it. In this paper and interactive lecture session, we will review a subset of the related literature, discuss benefits and challenges in teaching and learning mathematical modeling, and share our attempts to improve traditional textbook problems so that they can become more authentic modeling activities and implications for instruction and assessment as well as for research.
A MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF IMMUNE-MEDIATED DISORDER IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE
Park, Anna,Jung, Il Hyo The Youngnam Mathematical Society 2016 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.32 No.1
Inflammatory Bowel Disease(IBD) is chronic, relapsing, immune mediated disorder. The exact cause of IBD is still unknown. The immune system is known to play important role in the dynamics of IBD. We focus on relation between T cells and cytokines in immune system that leads to IBD. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model describing IBD under considering immune mediated disorder by using ordinary differential equations. The existence and stability of the model are established, where an applicable basin of attraction are calculated and examined. Some numerical simulations are presented to verify the proposed results and as changing parameter values given by sensitivity analysis, we show how to change dynamic behaviors of the model.
