본 연구는 1963년 이후 한국지리학자들에 의해서 수행된 해외지역연구를 분석하고 장래를 전망한 내용이다. 자료는 주로 대한지리학회지와 서울대학교에서 간행된 두종류의 학술지에 의존했고, 이밖에 중${\cdot}$고등학교 교육자료를 참조했다. 이를 통해서 집계한 결과 창간이래 1995년까지 총 46편의 해외연구논문이 실려 있을 뿐이고, 그 중에도 36편이 1980년 이후의 산물이다. 문화${\cdot}$역사지리와 인구지리, 촌락지리 등을 인문지리의 soft part라 분류하고 도시${\cdot}$경제지리 등을 hard part라고 분류한다면 외국연구에 관한한 soft part가 더 많다. 그러나 1990년 이후에 hard part의 급증이 주목되는데 그것은 globalization논의의 급증 때문이다. 물론, 이들 연구의 대부분이 실증주의를 기반으로 한다. globalization과 관계되는 논문은 주로 도시${\cdot}$경제지리 분야에서 많은데 대체로 regional change(transformation), regional impacts 등 주로 restructuring에 관한 내용이 지배적이다. 이들 내용이 지역문제의 본질에 무게가 실려있기 보다 노동시장, 기업의 조직, 기술혁신, 시장전략, 산업구조 등 경제 메카니즘에 무게가 실려있다. 오늘의 지리학자들은 사회적 사실이나 사회적 변화, 그리고 그오 연관된 자본주의 생산양식 및 그것이 양생된 환경을 외면하기 어렵다. 세계화시대의 "공간구조"는 그것이 사회적 생산물임과 동시에 다른 한편으로는 세계화${\cdot}$지방화 맥락의 산물이기도 하다. 우리가 새로운 지지(지역지리)의 건설을 요구하는 이유는 바로 여기에 있다. 지역의 다양성은 사라지지 않았다. 새로운 모습을 취하고 있을 뿐이다. This paper attempts to analyze the changes of the contents in foreign area research carried out by Korean geographers, and discuss the task of the new regional geography in a global-local context. As compared with domestic area research, only a scant of foreign area research has been carried out. In the 1990's, the research interests are paid to how an open economy affects the regional economy, especialy the production technique, division of labor, industrial mix, market strategy, industrial location and organization, and so on. Unfortunately, however, the boundaries between economic geography and regional economy are gradully disappearing.

Political Ecology and Bioregionalism: New Directions for Geography and Resource-Use Management

이 논문은 정치생태학이론을 정치적 및 경제적 불균등 간의 연계측면과 환경파괴에 초점을 맞춘 측면을 동시에 개략적으로 검토한 것이다. 본 논문에서는 정치생태학 전통을 '고전적', '민주적', '탈 구조주의적'으로 나누는 3가지 분류 도식을 채택하였다. 탈 구조주의 전통은 협의의 준(準)이상적인 담론으로부터 존재론적이고 인식론적인 이슈에 더 강한 철학적 참여로 나아갈 필요가 있다. 후자의 견해는 니체의 유물론에서 발전된 Gilles Deleuze의 것에 입각한다. 이러한 배경에서. 본 논문은 1970 및 80년대에 북미의 환경운동으로부터 발달된 비교적 새로운 지적 전통인 '생물지역주의'에 관한 문헌들을 검토한다. 또한 이른바 '생물지역적 접근'은 행정단위는 생태-지리적 및 문화적 현상을 갈라놓기보다는 반영할 필요가 있다. 생물지역주의는 탈 구조주의적 정치생태학의 수정 필요성에 동조하는 지리학자와 계획가들에게 잠재적인 실용적 연구의 개념적 틀로서 평가된다. 결론적으로 정치생태학에 대한 생물지역적 접근은 비평에 의해 확인된 약점들을 회피하면서. 기초적인 철학적 관념의 고려사항의 범위론 제공하고. 그로부터 탈 구조주의적 정치생태학의 실용적 발달을 이룰 수 있다. This paper provides an overview of political ecology, a body of theory that focuses on the links between political and economic inequality on the one hand, and environmental degradation on the other. Adopting a tripartite classification scheme that identifies three political ecology traditions -'classical', 'democratic' and 'poststructuralist'- the discussion shows the need for a move within the poststructuralist tradition away from a narrow and quasi-idealistic focus on discourse to a more robust philosophical engagement with ontological and epistemological issues grounded in Gilles Deleuze's development of Nietzschean materialism. From there. the author draws on numerous examples from Canada, and surveys the available literature on 'bioregionalism', a relatively new intellectual tradition evolved from the North American environmental social movements of the 1970s and 1980s. The so-called 'bioregional approach' stresses that administrative units need to reflect (rather than transect) eco-geographical and cultural features. Bioregionalism is described and assessed as a potential pragmatic research framework for geographers and other planners wishing to respond proactively to the call for a revamped, poststructuralist political ecology. The paper concludes that a bioregional approach to political ecology avoids the weaknesses identified by certain critics, provides scope for consideration of fundamental philosophical ideas, and as such, represents a practical development of a poststructuralist political ecology.

Technology in Place : Real Virtuality

새로운 정보기술이 등장하고 교류가 늘어나면서 과거 간명해 보였던 개념과 현실의 관계가 다변화되고 모호하게 변하고 있다. 가상공간(cyberspace)의 출현은 가상장소(cyberplaces)가 존재함을 뜻하며, 또한 현실 세계의 공간과 장소 간의 관계에 못지 않게 가상공간과 가상장소의 관계도 복잡할 것임을 암시한다. 정보기술을 활용하여 만들어 낸 세상의 여러 장소나 과정의 복제품, 즉 가상현실(virtual reality)은 이러한 관계들을 탐색하는 실마리를 제공하낟. 그러나, 실제가상(real virtuality), 즉 정보기술을 이용하여 현실세계의 장소에 대한 경험을 강화하면 공간과 장소의 관계에 대하여 더 깊은 통찰을 얻을 수 있다. 실제가상은 지리학자로 하여금 그가 하는 일의 효율성을 높이고 영역을 넓히는 데 여러 가지 참신하고 강력한 도구를 마련해 준다. 실제가상이 널리 쓰이게 되면 지리학자들의 연구와 교육, 응용 분야에서 자료, 분석기법, 이론을 다루는 양식이 달라질 것이다. New technologie of information and interaction create ambiguous, multifaceted relationships between concepts and realities that once seemed clear and simple. The acvent of cyberspace implies the existence of cyberplaces and relationships among cyberspace and places that could be as or more complex then those that exist among the spaces and places of the non-digital world. Virtual reality-the current uses of infomation technologies to create replicas of places and processes in the world-offers a point of exploring such relationships. But more penetrating insights become evident in the examination of real virtuality-the uses of information technologies to enhance the experience of places in the world. Real virtuality offers geographers a variety of innovative and powerful tools for augmenting the effectiveness and domain of their craft. Widespread use of real virtuality by geograpgers will alter their use of data, methods, and theory in research, teaching, and practice.
